And there is a third benefit of putting on the boxing gloves. 4 However, boxing is not just an individual activity. It also involves working with others to train and stay safe. Dr. Gavin Williams, Senior Lecturer in Education at the Open University says that this team work can create a sense of identity and belonging. So, whatever the reason that attracts someone to boxing is, the interactive elements of the sport mean it can also have great social benefits.
Boxing is good for body, mind and social interactions, isn’t it? 5

Interesting Eating Habits From Different Countries
Among one of the joys of traveling abroad is the exposure to different types of cuisines. Here we provide some eating habits that could benefit you when traveling to a foreign country.
Britain
1 In England, the term “dinner” can refer to the afternoon meal, or lunch as some of us know it. What we know as dinner is sometimes called tea or supper, depending on how late it is consumed. The most common time for tea is at four o’clock in the afternoon. Supper is generally a lighter meal taken later in the evening.
China
The use of chopsticks when eating Chinese cuisine is one that needs practice. To hold the chopsticks properly, first hold the first stick like a pencil, and the second stick between your thumb and your ring finger. 2
India
It is pretty widely known that Indians traditionally eat with hands. 3 Many urban Indians today, whether living in India or not, maintain the practice of eating with their hands.
Before settling down to begin your meal, make sure to wash your hands thoroughly first. Always eat with your right hand only. 4 Besides, make sure not to have any food touch your palms (手掌), and do not put your fingers into your mouth. Instead, use your fingers to push the food into your mouth.
Japan
In Japan, before sitting down to a meal, fresh hot towels are given to you to clean your hands. 5 It means “I’m going to start eating”.
A.When your orders arrive, it is also polite to say the phrase “itadakimasu”.
B.Let China’s food culture move toward the world.
C.There, dinner may not be the dinner that you and I know.
D.Eating with your left hand is considered disrespectful.
E.In some countries, lunchtime often means soup time.
F.Your middle finger should be in between the two chopsticks.

HOW TO OVERCOME A CREATIVE BLOCK
I’m sitting at my desk, staring at a blank document, hoping my fingers will start typing and a brilliant story will appear on my screen. Even though I feel fortunate to usually be full of ideas, I still face creative blocks times — when I feel uninspired.
1 . Different emotions may lead to creative blocks. One is the so-called “inner critic”, a voice we all have within when we are feeling anxious. There’s no room for mistakes when this is in charge, so we end up feeling frozen. 2 . As a way of people-pleasing, and avoiding conflict or a negative reaction from other people, it can produce negative self-talk. If we feel insecure, we may not feel safe to express ourselves through art or craft.
Fortunately, there are steps we can take to breakthrough these blocks.
Working with our inner critic
We work with our inner critic by teaching it more compassionate (有同情心的) ways of speaking to us. 3 . The best way to do this is to imagine whether you would say the same things you say about yourself to a love done. It’s unlikely that you’d say: “You’re not good enough, what a failure!” Then we can think of a kinder response such as: “You’ve learned so much from this, what do you think you’ll do differently next time you have ago?”
4
We can try other creative and mindful activities to help reduce anxiety, and boost yourself-esteem (自尊). It could be singing along to your favourite music, doing some weeding, going out for a walk in nature, taking photographs on a lunchtime stroll, or having interesting conversations with friends. Then you’ll feel ready to get your creativity on the go again.
Next time you’re feeling a creative block, remind yourself that it’s OK to just get something written, or painted, or crafted and that you don’t need to share it with anyone. It’s all about making a start. 5 .
A.Filling your creativity cup
B.Talking to someone you trust
C.We’d better be mindful of our loved ones
D.Perfectionism maybe another contributor
E.Creativity is like a muscle and gets easier once you get doing
F.Such a problem can be solved by understanding the causes of them
G.We must identify its comments as something separate from ourselves

Getting angry is a normal emotion that everyone experiences. However, regular or continued anger can harm your health in more ways than you might think.
When you get angry, your body reacts in ways that can cause problems. For example, a study found that anger can increase the risk of heart attacks. This is because anger affects how well your blood vessels (血管) work, making it harder for blood to flow properly. 1
Anger also affects your stomach and digestive (和消化有关的) system. When you’re mad, your body can slow down digestion and cause stomach pain. Worse, your brain suffers from too much anger as well. 2 This affects your ability to think clearly and remember things, possibly leading to long-term cognitive (认知的) issues.
So how can you manage your anger better? Here are several effective strategies which can help you lead a healthier life.
Recognize and accept your anger. 3 While occasional anger is normal, long-term anger may indicate a deeper issue that requires attention.
4 Practices such as deep breathing exercises and talk therapy (疗法) can reduce the physical impact of anger on the body. Deep breathing helps calm the nervous system, while discussing your feelings with a professional can provide valuable views and coping ways.
Use anger-management techniques. For instance, instead of yelling, calmly explain the cause of your anger and what you need to feel better. 5
A.Identify the cause of your anger.
B.Take part in mental-health exercises.
C.Over time, this can lead to heart disease.
D.It can damage some systems of the brain.
E.It can affect your relationships with your friends.
F.It’s important to be aware of how often your anger occurs.
G.Calm expression of anger can prevent it from causing more serious issues.

Do you really need a new phone every 2 years?
If you’re looking to replace or upgrade your smartphone in the coming year, think it over. 1 Do you simply have the desire to get the new, shiny tech? There are some issues to consider besides the new device’s affordability.
Our desire to always have the newest smartphone comes at a high environmental cost. According to Swappie, which repairs and resells iPhones, 1. billion new smartphones forecast to be shipped this year will generate 16 million tons of planet-warming emissions. 2
What can you do ?
Resist the desire to upgrade. If your phone still works, get as much life as you can out of it. “The greenest smart-phone is the one you already own,” Stratton said.
Get it fixed. If your phone breaks, get it repaired directly by the manufacturer or take it to a store to repair your phone brand. 3
Sell it instead of throwing it. You can sell your used smartphone to specialized repairing companies like Swappie to give it a second life. 4 This is because of the materials used to produce them.
5 If your phone is completely broken and cannot be sold, you can still recycle it. You just need to do a little bit of research into how and where to correctly recycle it.
A.Make it functioned.
B.Recycle it properly.
C.Do you really need a new phone?
D.Broken phones can still be valuable.
E.Where can you get a new smartphone?
F.83% of them come from producing, shipping and first-year usage.
G.A broken or out-of-order phone can often be fixed through easy repairs.

How to Deal with Stress (压力) at School
Stress is part of students’ life. While some stress can help them to get work done, too much stress can cause problems with health and sleep. 1 Try one or more of the following.

Students learn in different ways and have different learning styles. Some do homework all at once, while others need to take some breaks. Some students remember well in the morning. 2 So work out your best learning ways and you’ll feel relaxed.
Stay healthy and get enough sleep.
Many students don’t focus on (关注) their health. 3 Exercising, eating a healthy diet (饮食) and getting enough sleep do good to school performance. When you take care of yourself, you just feel better!
Talk to others.
4 When you talk your stress out with some friends, chances are that some of them are going through the same thing and they might have some ideas to share. Besides, it helps to know you’re not alone.
5
You should feel good about taking break. And only you can say which activities work best for letting you relax. Some people find that quiet activities like reading a book or watching TV are the best way to relax. Others prefer more active breaks: working on personal projects, exercising like yoga or Tai Chi, listening to music or spending time outdoors.
A.Give yourself a break.

C.Sometimes you feel tired.
D.However, other students remember well in the evening.

It’s happened to all of us: a song comes on the radio, and we are immediately transported back to a time in our past. 1
There are a few things that connect tunes with our memories. Music is often a necessary element of many important life events, and it is also very effective in arresting our attention. 2 Besides, the emotional nature of music helps make it particularly memorable.
We often become familiar with a piece of music because we hear it as background music. The more familiar a piece of music is, the more effective it is in bringing back memories. 3 The reason is that we are far more likely to hear a song over and over again than to watch a film or a TV programme in the same way.
Tiffany Jenkins, writing for a culture column, has a different opinion: 4 She tells us how throughout history oral cultures have passed important knowledge from generation to generation through songs because of this characteristic. The rhythm (韵律) and rhyme in lines of songs all serve as memory aids.
5 This fact corresponds with what many experts call the “reminiscence bump (怀旧性记忆)”, where older adults (over forty) have increased recollection of events that occurred during their adolescence and early adulthood.
It’s clear that our memories and music are closely linked — to the point that music is being used to help Alzheimer’s disease sufferers access memories that they thought they had lost.
A.Familiarity is important.
B.Music itself is easy to remember.
C.But what makes music so effective in doing this?
D.Our musical preference usually forms during our teens.
E.This applies to music more than other cultural products.
F.Pop music especially can be connected with an important memory.
G.Music and these life events are likely to be linked together in our memories.

Every dollar you get, whether it’s a gift, an allowance, or pay from a job, get into the habit of saving a part of it. Half of it would be ideal. 和下文的“The older you get, the harder it can seem to save even 10% of your money. Boxing has been practised for centuries—it was even one of the sports in the original Olympic Games in ancient Greece. 1 In the UK, hundreds of thousands of people from all walks of life join in the sport every week. But why? The answer lies in the physical, mental and even social benefits boxing can bring.
2 Whether it’s practising with a punching bag, or a partner or facing an opponent in the ring, boxing can be an extreme form of exercise and give a full-body workout. It can improve muscular strength as well as increase anaerobic (无氧的) fitness, allowing someone to work out harder, for longer.
Boxing can also have a positive influence on one’s mental well-being. Dr. Jessica Pinchbeck, Senior Lecturer in Sport and Fitness at the Open University, says, “ 3 ” Exercising regularly is already widely known to be good for mental health, but boxing can also bring a sense of discipline and focus.
A.Boxing can help relieve negative feelings, like anxiety and depression.
B.That’s why more and more people are stepping into the ring.
C.Practising punches can be done alone of course.
D.More recently, boxing has become the mainstream.
E.It helps little burn calories.
F.Its physical benefits are clear.
G.That is when you would like to do the popular sport—Boxing.

It also involves working with others to train and stay safe. C选项中的“Practising punches can be done alone of course.
5.由上文的“Boxing is good for body, mind and social interactions, isn’t it? (拳击对身心和社交都有好处,不是吗?)”可知,前一句总结说拳击对身体、心理和社会交往都有好处,所以越来越多的人开始接触拳击。B选项的“That’s why more and more people are stepping into the ring. (这就是为什么越来越多的人进入拳击场)”能承接上文,符合题意。故选B。

The most common time for tea is at four o’clock in the afternoon. Supper is generally a lighter meal taken later in the evening.
China

Before settling down to begin your meal, make sure to wash your hands thoroughly first. Always eat with your right hand only. 4 Besides, make sure not to have any food touch your palms (手掌), and do not put your fingers into your mouth. Instead, use your fingers to push the food into your mouth.

【答案】1.F 2.D 3.G 4.A 5.E
1.根据空后“Different emotions may lead to creative blocks. One is the so-called “inner critic”, a voice we all have within when we are feeling anxious. There’s no room for mistakes when this is in charge, so we end up feeling frozen.(不同的情绪可能导致创造性的障碍。一种是所谓的“内心批评”,当我们感到焦虑时,我们都会发出这样的声音。当一切都在掌控之中的时候,就没有犯错的余地了,所以我们最终会感觉僵住了。)”可知,下文提出了了解创造性障碍的起因。选项F“Such a problem can be solved by understanding the causes of them(这样的问题可以通过了解其原因来解决)”与下文内容一致,指出了解了创造性障碍的原因就可以解决创造性障碍,且Such a problem指代上文提到的问题。故选F。
2.根据空后内容“As a way of people-pleasing, and avoiding conflict or a negative reaction from other people, it can produce negative self-talk. If we feel insecure, we may not feel safe to express ourselves through art or craft. (作为一种取悦他人、避免冲突或他人消极反应的方式,它会产生消极的自言自语。如果我们感到不安全,我们可能不会觉得通过艺术或工艺来表达自己是安全的。)”可知,下文解释了另一种产生创造性障碍的原因。选项D“Perfectionism maybe another contributor(完美主义可能是另一个因素)”与下文内容一致,指的是完美主义也会让我们产生创造性障碍。故选D。
3.根据空前“We work with our inner critic by teaching it more compassionate(有同情心的) ways of speaking to us.(我们与内心的批评者一起工作,教它更富有同情心的方式与我们说话。)”可知,空前建议我们与内心的批评者一起工作;而空后的“The best way to do this is to imagine whether you would say the same things you say about yourself to a love done.(做到这一点的最好方法是想象一下,你是否会对自己所爱的人说同样的话。)” G“We must identify its comments as something separate from ourselves(我们必须把它的评论看作与我们自己无关的东西)”与上下文内容一致,建议我们将它的评论视为与我们自身分离的东西。故选G。
根据下文“We can try other creative and mindful activities to help reduce anxiety, and boost yourself-esteem(自尊). It could be singing along to your favourite music, doing some weeding, going out for a walk in nature, taking photographs on a lunchtime stroll, or having interesting conversations with friends. Then you’ll feel ready to get your creativity on the go again.(我们可以尝试其他创造性和正念的活动来帮助减少焦虑,提高你的自尊。 故选A。
5.根据上文内容“Next time you’re feeling a creative block, remind yourself that it’s OK to just get something written, or painted, or crafted and that you don’t need to share it with anyone.

1.空前说“While some stress can help them to get work done, too much stress can cause problems with health and sleep.(虽然一些压力可以帮助他们完成工作,但太多的压力会导致健康和睡眠问题。)”,说明我们需要处理压力,空后说“Try one or more of the following.(尝试以下一个或多个方法。)”,说明有办法处理压力,F选项“Now when you feel your stress building up inside, how can you manage it?(现在,当你感到内心的压力越来越大时,你该如何应对呢?)”
2.空前说“Some do homework all at once, while others need to take some breaks. Some students remember well in the morning.(有些人一次做完作业,而另一些人则需要休息一下。有些学生早上记得很好)”,根据句意和句式可知,空格处应该引出与空前“有些学生早上记得很好”相反的内容,即“另外的学生晚上记得好”,D选项“However, other students remember well in the evening.(然而,其他学生在晚上记得很好。)”说明“其他学生在晚上记得很好”,因此承接上文,符合语境,故选D。
3.空前说“Many students don’t focus on (关注) their health.(许多学生不注重自己的健康。)”,空格处应该说这导致了什么结果,E选项“As a result, their performance (表现) in school and work can be bad.(因此,他们在学校和工作中的表现可能很差。)”
4.空后说“When you talk your stress out with some friends, chances are that some of them are going through the same thing and they might have some ideas to share.(当你和一些朋友谈论你的压力时,很有可能他们中的一些人正在经历同样的事情,他们可能会有一些想法与你分享。)”,说明要和他人聊天,聊天的时候免不了分享一些问题,G选项“Share your problems and how you are feeling and dealing with a parent, friend, teacher, or doctor.(与父母、朋友、老师或医生分享你的问题以及你的感受和处理方式。)”
5.空格处是本段小标题,由空格下方内容“You should feel good about taking break. And only you can say which activities work best for letting you relax.(你应该对休息感到高兴。只有你自己知道哪些活动最能让你放松。)”可知,本段主要讲的是要休息,A选项“Give yourself a break.(让自己休息一下。)”概括了本段主要内容,可作为小标题,故选A。

1.根据前文“It’s happened to all of us: a song comes on the radio, and we are immediately transported back to a time in our past.(我们每个人都有过这样的经历:收音机里响起一首歌,我们立刻被传送回过去的某个时间。)”和后文“There are a few things that connect tunes with our memories.(有一些东西可以将音乐与我们的记忆联系起来。)”
2.根据前文“Music is often a necessary element of many important life events, and it is also very effective in arresting our attention.(音乐往往是许多重要生活事件的必要元素,它也非常有效地吸引我们的注意力。)”
3.根据后文“The reason is that we are far more likely to hear a song over and over again than to watch a film or a TV programme in the same way.(原因是我们更有可能一遍又一遍地听一首歌,而不是用同样的方式看电影或电视节目。)”
4.根据后文“She tells us how throughout history oral cultures have passed important knowledge from generation to generation through songs because of this characteristic. The rhythm (韵律) and rhyme in lines of songs all serve as memory aids.(她告诉我们,由于这一特点,在整个历史中,口头文化是如何通过歌曲将重要的知识代代相传的。歌词的节奏和韵律都可以帮助记忆。)”可知,此处是指音乐容易记忆,所以选项B“音乐本身很容易记住。”切合文意。故选B。
5.根据后文“This fact corresponds with what many experts call the “reminiscence bump (怀旧性记忆)”, where older adults (over forty) have increased recollection of events that occurred during their adolescence and early adulthood.(这一事实与许多专家所说的“怀旧性记忆”相吻合,即老年人(40岁以上)对青春期和成年早期发生的事件的回忆增加。)”
