It was a winter evening in 2024. Mr. Chen, a 72-year-old blind man, tied his thick scarf tightly and lit an old lantern. The cold air hurt his skin as he prepared to walk home from the village market. His neighbor, Li Wei, watched from her door, looking puzzled.
“Uncle Chen,” she said softly, “Why carry a lantern if you can’t see?”
The old man turned with a kind smile. “This light isn’t for me. In the dark others might not see my walking stick. It helps them avoid running into me. And maybe it can show someone else the way home too.” Li Wei thought about his words as he stepped onto the icy path.
Soon, the lantern’s light showed a small figure hiding under a snow-covered tree. “Grandpa!” a crying voice shouted. “I lost my mommy!” The shaking five-year-old held Mr. Chen’s hand. They had walked only ten meters when a strong wind blew out the flame.
The girl was scared, but Mr. Chen stayed calm. Feeling his way to some bushes (灌木丛), he found a dry stick with his experienced hands. Taking a small stone from his pocket, he made sparks(火花) until the dry leaves caught fire. The girl watched in surprise.
“How do you do that without seeing?” she whispered.
“Years of practice,” he answered. “When one sense goes away, others get stronger. Now I ‘see’ with my hands and ears.”
They kept walking until they heard a woman’s worried shouts. The happy meeting between mother and child made everyone around them moved. That night lanterns shined in every window of the village. Li Wei finally understood: real light comes from a kind heart, not from eyes that can see.

Every year on the first Friday of October, the world celebrates World Smile Day. The World Smile Foundation started this special day in 1999. Its goal is to encourage everyone to share smiles and kindness, because a smile can make the world happier easily.
A smile is more than a face expression. It’s a language everyone understands, no matter where they are from or what language they speak. When you smile, your body gives out happy chemicals. These make you feel less stressed and more positive. Smiling also helps your body! Studies show it can lower blood pressure, make the immune system (免疫系统) stronger, and keep the heart healthy. And here’s something interesting: smiles are contagious (有感染力的). When you smile at someone, they often smile back, like passing a small gift of happiness.
On World Smile Day, people do many fun things to spread smiles. Schools may have “smile challenges” for students to make more people smile. Some wear shirts with smiley faces or share kind messages online. Others do small kind acts, like helping a neighbor, giving a praise, or sharing a snack. These show that a smile costs nothing but can change someone’s day.
The World Smile Foundation’s slogan (口号) is: “Do an act of kindness; help one person smile.” Every small kind thing can make a difference. You don’t need a special reason to smile—it can help you feel better too! Whether smiling at a friend, classmate, or stranger, you’re spreading love and warmth.
World Smile Day reminds us of the power of a simple smile. It’s a day to see how much joy we can bring to others and ourselves with just a smile. So smile today and every day!
26. What is the main purpose of World Smile Day?
A. To create a new face expression.
B. To encourage global acts of kindness.
C. To raise money for medical research.
D. To celebrate the invention of language.
27. Why are smiles considered “contagious”?
A. Because they can spread diseases.
B. Because they require effort to produce.
C. Because people smile back when smiled at.
D. Because they are very common in certain cultures.
28. What does the underlined word “These” refer to?
A. Smiley faces. B. Kind messages. C. Small kind acts. D. School activities.
29. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The history of World Smile Day. B. How to share smiles with others.
C. The importance and power of smiles. D. How smiling lowers blood pressure.
30. Which is the right structure of the passage?
(①=paragraph 1, ②=paragraph 2, …)

Last Saturday, I joined the city park volunteer team with my classmates. The sun was shining brightly, and we arrived at Green Lake Park early in the morning, excited to help. A park worker welcomed us and gave us tasks: some would clean the paths, some guide visitors, and my group was asked to collect litter near the lake.
Wearing red volunteer hats, we started working. At first, I saw a plastic bottle stuck in the plants. It was hard to reach, but I carefully pulled it out. My friend Li Hua found a bag of snacks left on a bench and threw it into the correct trash bin. After working for several hours, we were tired but happy.
Besides, preventing bad behaviors is also one of our activities. As we worked, we noticed some kids trying to feed the ducks with bread. We walked over gently and told them, “Ducks can get sick from too much bread. Let’s protect them together!” The kids nodded and said sorry, which made us feel proud.
By noon the park looked cleaner, and the sky seemed bluer. We sat on the grass, smiling happily. I realized small actions can make a big difference. Being a volunteer isn’t just about working; it’s about caring for others and our environment. When we left, the park felt like a place where everyone shared responsibility.
This experience taught me that giving is also a form of harvest. I hope more people will join us, making our city parks not only beautiful but also full of love and warmth.

In the dark, others might not see my walking stick.
“Years of practice” he answered. “When one sense goes away, others get stronger. Now I ‘see’ with my hands and ears.”
They kept walking until they heard a woman’s worried shouts. The happy meeting between mother and child made everyone around them moved. That night, lanterns shined in every window of the village.

By noon, the park looked cleaner, and the sky seemed bluer.
