M: Welcome to today’s programme. Now I’m going to tell you something about the Toronto Zoo. The Toronto Zoo has put up signs requesting visitors to stop showing cellphone videos to the gorillas, in an effort to limit screen time for them. The signs explain that some content can be upsetting to the gorillas and may impact their relationships and behaviour within their family. While no significant behavioral changes have been observed yet, zoo officials want to ensure that the animals’ lives remain as natural as possible.
Nassir, a gorilla born in 2009, has shown a particular interest in videos on visitors’ phones. The zoo’s website states that Nassir is fascinated by videos and would spend all his time on screen if he had the choice. However, too much screen time was causing him to be absent-minded and prevented him from interacting with other gorillas. The zoo already allows controlled viewing of nature documentaries for Nassir and the other gorillas.
The goal is to let the gorillas be gorillas and provide visitors with a chance to observe them in their natural state. By stopping showing cellphone videos, visitors can help maintain a more meaningful experience for both the gorillas and themselves.

In a quiet village near Chengdu, 26-year-old Lin Zhipeng stands out as the only young resident among elderly neighbors. While most youth migrate to cities, Lin chooses rural life, bonding with seniors who affectionately call him “Dasenzi” (“big grandson” in Sichuan dialect). This nickname also titles his Douyin account, where his videos documenting inter-generational interactions have accumulated over 700,000 followers.
When interacting with the seniors in the village, Lin observed that the elderly are eager to connect with younger generations. His grandfather, for instance, who was once serious and quiet, had a breakthrough moment during a video shoot. He accidentally made a joke, and when seeing his grandson laughing heartily in response, it sparked a transformation in him. From then on, he began intentionally telling more jokes.
Beyond entertainment, Lin provides practical support for the elderly. He uses earnings from taking on product advertisement projects to purchase daily necessities for them and even organize photo shoots for elderly couples who have never had wedding pictures. Medical assistance is another priority. Seniors often hesitate to seek treatment for minor illnesses and find hospital procedures confusing when they do need care for more serious conditions. Whenever possible, Lin helps them navigate these issues.
However, Lin emphasizes that material aid isn’t enough. “They crave companionship — a visit or a call means a lot,” he says. Lin pointed out that while current policies ensure that even the most disadvantaged have enough food and clothing, elderly people living alone also need emotional support. “These elderly residents are getting older every day, and to be frank, they could leave us at any time,” Lin said. “Let’s cherish every moment we have with them while we still can.”
Through humor and compassion, “Dasenzi” redefines rural aging — not as isolation, but as a stage for inter-generational bonds.
24. Why might Lin’s grandfather start telling more jokes?
A. To gain more attention from his grandson B. To attract more followers on Douyin
C. To present Sichuan people’s joyful spirit D. To bond emotionally with his grandson
25. Which behavior is NOT mentioned as part of Lin’s support for the elderly?
A. Advocating for government policy changes B. Organizing wedding photography sessions
C. Financial assistance through sponsored ads D. Helping cope with healthcare procedures
26. Why does Lin emphasize that material aid isn’t enough for the elderly?
A. Because he thinks material assistance doesn’t matter at all.
B. Because the elderly long for emotional connection and company.
C. Because he lacks sufficient funds to support all their needs.
D. Because government policies have already covered basic living costs.
27. What might be the best title for the text?
A. Winning Fame: The Rise of a Douyin Star
B. Urban Migration: Leaving lonely elderly behind
C. Big grandson: Bridging Generations in Rural China
D. Medical Gaps: Addressing Elderly Care in Sichuan
D 25. A 26. B 27. C

根据第二段“When interacting with the seniors in the village, Lin observed that the elderly are eager to connect with younger generations. His grandfather, for instance, who was once serious and quiet, had a breakthrough moment during a video shoot. He accidentally made a joke, and when seeing his grandson laughing heartily in response, it sparked a transformation in him. From then on, he began intentionally telling more jokes.(在与村里的老人互动时,林智鹏观察到老年人渴望与年轻一代建立联系。例如,他的爷爷曾经严肃而安静,在一次视频拍摄中迎来了一个突破时刻。他不小心开了个玩笑,当看到孙子开心地大笑作为回应时,这在他身上引发了转变。从那时起,他开始有意地讲更多的笑话)”可知,爷爷开始讲更多笑话是因为看到孙子的积极回应,想与孙子在情感上建立更紧密的联系。故选D。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“He uses earnings from taking on product advertisement projects to purchase daily necessities for them and even organize photo shoots for elderly couples who have never had wedding pictures. Medical assistance is another priority. Seniors often hesitate to seek treatment for minor illnesses and find hospital procedures confusing when they do need care for more serious conditions. A 选项 “Advocating for government policy changes”(倡导政府政策改变),文中未提及。故选A。
根据第四段“However, Lin emphasizes that material aid isn’t enough. “They crave companionship — a visit or a call means a lot,” he says. Lin pointed out that while current policies ensure that even the most disadvantaged have enough food and clothing, elderly people living alone also need emotional support.(然而,林智鹏强调物质援助是不够的。
C
Scientists have studied gossip defined as talking about someone not present for decades. That’s not surprising considering it’s universal in any social group, big or small. People in modern societies spend about an hour a day involved in chin-wagging, one study reports. But investigators are now approaching this activity of social life from a new perspective.
In past decades, researchers focused primarily on the damage arising from gossiping, and they zeroed in on either the gossip spreader or the target the person being talked about. Now, they have changed course by looking more at the benefits of gossip and the dynamics of a three-part network that involves a gossiper, a listener and a target.
So what, if anything, can be good about gossip? Whenever someone tells something to you about someone you both know — whether the information is positive, negative or neutral — it brings the two of you closer, creating a social bond. According to one study, it even increases your liking for the spreader of the information. Plus, it enforces group norms.
Another experiment was led by social psychologist Terence Cruz, then at Free University Amsterdam. Cruz and his team recruited 300 people in a community in the Netherlands and asked them to list 15 people with whom they had frequent contact. Four times each day for 10 days, the subjects were asked to report on any information that someone in their social network told them, or that they told someone, about a third person.
The experiment showed that the gossiper passed on true information when they had no conflict with the target. When they had rivalry or other conflicts of interest with the target, however, they were likelier to pass on things that were self-serving or absolutely false. Nevertheless, one of the most surprising results of gossip, Cruz says, is that it helps people better understand the behavior of others. For example, a co-worker shows up late every day, but if they learn through gossip that the colleague is in the middle of a divorce or the like, they are less likely to complain. Perhaps more importantly, they sympathize with the co-worker and feel motivated to help the miserable guy.
28. What is the new perspective investigators now adopt?
A. Analyze the new feature of social life. B. Investigate the potential risks of gossip.
C. Focus on the advantages of gossip. D. Look at either the spreader or the target.
29. What impact might gossip have according to paragraph 3?
A. It fuels the popularity of the target. B. It betters the workplace environment.
C. It invades the privacy of co-workers. D. It enhances the overall social bond.
30. What does the underlined word “rivalry” mean in the last paragraph?
A. competition B. contact C. envy D. intervention
31. What does Cruz’s research find?
A. An average person contacts 15 people frequently.
B. Gossips tend to spread incorrect information.
C. One can never keep their privacy from colleagues.
D. Workplace relationships can benefit from gossip.
C 29. D 30. A 31. D

Children with attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often struggle to follow instructions or finish tasks. This is partly because their “working memory” — the brain’s system for holding and processing short-term information — is weaker than average. A recent Stanford University study tested a new tool that helps these children strengthen their working memory using real-time brain feedback.
The tool, called functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), uses harmless infrared light to track blood oxygen levels in a specific brain area. Children wore a special cap connected to the device while doing memory tasks. For example, they memorized a string of letters and later identified whether a target letter matched the original sequence. As they focused, the system monitored activity in their prefrontal cortex — a brain region critical for planning and decision-making. When the children successfully activated under-active parts of this area, they received instant rewards, such as gold coins appearing on a screen.
The study involved 21 children with ADHD who completed 12 weekly training sessions. Results showed that about half experienced noticeable symptom improvements, such as staying focused longer in class. Most also performed better on working memory tasks. A control group of 15 children receiving standard ADHD treatments (like medication) did not show the same progress.
Unlike medications that manage symptoms temporarily, this method aims to “exercise” weak brain networks. Dr. Hadi Hosseini, the study’s lead researcher, explained that ADHD involves poor attention regulation, not just a lack of focus. By training the prefrontal cortex, children learn to control their attention more effectively.
Another advantage is accessibility. Traditional brain scanners like MRI machines are expensive and require patients to lie still in noisy tubes. The fNIRS cap is portable, affordable, and works even if children move slightly. The team is developing a home-friendly headband version, allowing daily practice without visiting a lab.
Dr. Hosseini believes this approach could help other conditions linked to poor working memory, such as autism or depression. “Early intervention can reshape how young brains develop,” he said. However, larger studies are needed to confirm long-term benefits.
While not a cure, this tool offers a promising alternative for families seeking non-drug treatments. By tailoring training to each child’s unique brain patterns, scientists hope to address the root causes of ADHD, not just its symptoms.
32. How does the fNIRS tool measure brain activity?
A. By monitoring participants’ performance during tasks.
B. By tracking electrical signals through specific brain areas.
C. By detecting blood oxygen levels in prefrontal cortex.
D. By measuring temperature changes and blood pressure.
33. Why did researchers include a control group in the study?
A. To prove that ADHD symptoms naturally improve over time.
B. To rule out the influence of non-treatment factors on results.
C. To ensure all children received equal training opportunities.
D. To compare the effects of infrared light with medications.
34. What’s Dr. Hosseini’s attitude to the long-term effectiveness of their new device?
A. suspicious B. Positive C. Cautious D. Unclear
35. What is the article mainly about?
A. The measures taken to help kids with ADHD.
B. Risks of ADHD medications children may face.
C. The advantages of a new treatment for ADHD.
D. A new brain training tool helping kids with ADHD.
C 33. B 34. C 35. D

For example, they memorized a string of letters and later identified whether a target letter matched the original sequence. As they focused, the system monitored activity in their prefrontal cortex — a brain region critical for planning and decision-making.
根据第三段中“The study involved 21 children with ADHD who completed 12 weekly training sessions. Results showed that about half experienced noticeable symptom improvements, such as staying focused longer in class. Most also performed better on working memory tasks. A control group of 15 children receiving standard ADHD treatments (like medication) did not show the same progress.
Hosseini believes this approach could help other conditions linked to poor working memory, such as autism or depression. “Early intervention can reshape how young brains develop,” he said. However, larger studies are needed to confirm long-term benefits. (侯赛尼博士认为,这种方法可以帮助治疗其他与工作记忆差有关的病症,比如自闭症或抑郁症。他说:“早期干预可以重塑年轻大脑的发育方式。” 不过,还需要进行更大规模的研究来证实其长期效果)”可知,侯赛尼博士认为需要更大的研究来证实fNIRS工具的长期益处,说明他对新设备的长期有效性持谨慎态度。故选C。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是根据第一段中“Children with attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often struggle to follow instructions or finish tasks. This is partly because their “working memory” — the brain’s system for holding and processing short-term information — is weaker than average. A recent Stanford University study tested a new tool that helps these children strengthen their working memory using real-time brain feedback. (患有注意力缺陷/多动障碍(ADHD)的儿童常常难以听从指令或完成任务。这在一定程度上是因为他们的“工作记忆”——大脑用于存储和处理短期信息的系统——比一般人要弱。斯坦福大学最近的一项研究测试了一种新工具,该工具通过实时脑反馈来帮助这些儿童增强他们的工作记忆)”和第二段中“The tool, called functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), uses harmless infrared light to track blood oxygen levels in a specific brain area. Children wore a special cap connected to the device while doing memory tasks. (这种工具被称为功能性近红外光谱技术(fNIRS),它使用无害的红外光来追踪大脑特定区域的血氧水平。孩子们在做记忆任务时会戴上一顶与该设备相连的特殊帽子)”可知,本文主要介绍了一种名为fNIRS的新脑训练工具,它通过实时脑反馈帮助多动症儿童增强工作记忆,并讨论了其优势、应用前景及研究人员的态度。故选D。

Green roofs can date back to thousands of years ago, long before modern residential buildings were developed. From primitive grass-covered roofs above caves to the legendary Hanging Gardens of Babylon, they remained an important part of architecture. ____36____. They bring enormous environmental benefits and offer solutions to some pressing ecological challenges of our time.
In the design of a green roof, there are key factors that count. The first step is to install (安装) protective layer over the roof to prevent water damage. ____37____. It’s essential to choose high-quality materials, as once the green roof is completed and the building is in use, replacing the protective layer becomes difficult and costly.
Next, a drainage (排水) layer, which is often made of pebbles or a special mat, is placed on top. It helps water flow off the roof instead of pooling on it. Then, a growing medium, like soil or other similar materials, is spread over the drainage layer. ____38____.
Now it’s time to choose plant for the roof. Some plants have shallow root systems and don’t need much water. ____39____. Sedum and chives are good examples of such plants. They are not only water-efficient but tough and long-lasting.
____40____. It’s important to think about your budget. On average, it costs $25 to $30 per square foot to install a green roof. This doesn’t include the cost of installing or repairing the normal roof underneath. And there is labour cost to cover.

Jane, a high school senior in Willowbrook, was always alone at her home because her parents were often occupied with their work, even in the evening and she had to take on the household chores, including taking care of their garden. Nevertheless, though she dutifully tended to the garden, it never appeared attractive due to her poor knowledge of gardening.
One evening, Jane was left alone at home again. She sat by the window, doing her homework. When she looked outside, through the rain-spattered window, she noticed a figure lingering under the streetlamp across the street. The man, wearing a long black coat, seemed to be looking directly at her house. Jane’s heart skipped a beat as their eyes briefly met.
Actually this wasn’t the first time that Jane had seen the man in the neighborhood. He never spoke to anyone, and he always seemed to be alone. Jane had mentioned him to her parents, who said he was new to this town and was a gardener. However, Jane couldn’t shake the feeling of fear.
That evening, as the man lingered across the street, Jane dialed Mrs. Baker’s number with trembling fingers. Mrs. Baker, who lived just a few houses away, was a kind elderly woman who had always been like a grandmother to Jane. “Mrs. Baker, there’s a man outside, and he’s been standing there for a while. I’m scared,” Jane whispered into the phone. “I’ll be right over, dear,” Mrs. Baker tried to calm Jane down.
Moments later, Mrs. Baker arrived at. Together, they went to the window and peered (仔细看) out. The man was still there, but he was holding something in his hands. Jane’s fear grew. “What if he’s dangerous?” Jane murmured. Mrs. Baker patted Jane’s shoulder and said, “Let’s not jump to a conclusion so quickly.” Just then, the man began walking toward Jane’s house. Jane’s heart pounded as he approached the front door. But instead of knocking, he bent down and placed something on the porch (门廊). Then, he turned around and walked away.

Seeing the man melting into the darkness, Jane went to open the door and found a package with a note. Jane picked up the note and unfolded it, which read, “To the family who lives here — I’ve noticed your garden has been struggling lately. As a gardener, I think these seeds might help. They thrive even without special care. Best wishes, a newcomer in the neighborhood.” Realizing she had misjudged the man completely, Jane felt a wave of shame wash over her. He was not a threat but a kind neighbour trying to help. Mrs. Baker smiled, “See? Sometimes people surprise us in the best ways.” Jane nodded, her throat tight.
The next day, Jane determined to find the man and thank him for his seeds. She walked around the neighborhood until she spotted the man working in a garden. “Hello,” she approached him and stammered. The man looked up. “Thanks for the seeds,” added Jane. His weathered face softening, the man responded gently, “It’s alright. It’s my pleasure to help.” When Jane asked if he could tech her some gardening techniques, the man nodded with a big smile. During the following months, Jane tended her garden under the man’s guidance, which finally turned into a sea of blooms, every petal seeming to be saying that an unexpected act of kindness, like a seed, could root deep and work wonders.

30 What does the underlined word “rivalry” mean in the last paragraph?
A. competition B. contact C. envy D. intervention
31. What does Cruz’s research find?
A. An average person contacts 15 people frequently.
B. Gossips tend to spread incorrect information.
C. One can never keep their privacy from colleagues.
D. Workplace relationships can benefit from gossip.

Children with attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often struggle to follow instructions or finish tasks This is partly because their “working memory” — the brain’s system for holding and processing short-term information — is weaker than average.
