Water is one of the most important substances (物质) on Earth. Without water, humans, animals even plants would die. About 70 per cent of our body weight is water. People have lived for a month or more without food, but we could live for only three or four days without water.
How much water do animals and plants need? A human may need 2 liters (升) per day, a cow needs 135 liters per day and a large tree requires 20, 000 liters a day.
How do we people use water? We drink water. We wash our bodies, our clothes and many other things with water. The foods we eat have water in them, and all our drinks are largely water. We use water to cook many of our foods, and we use water for different activities, such as boating, swimming and fishing.
Plants need water to live just like we do. Plants use their roots to take up water from the soil. The crops that farmers grow for our food need water to grow. In some places where there is little rain and the land is dry, farmers bring water from rivers, lakes and wells to their fields. It’s called irrigation (灌溉). Some crops need more water to grow than others. Rice and cotton, for example, need lots of water, while olives and oranges need only a little.
Animals also need water to live. The animals that provide us with meat, milk and eggs need large amounts of clean water to drink. Water is also home to millions of plants and animals, including the fish we eat.
Some industries use water to cool hot substances or the moving parts of machines. Water also helps to produce most of our electricity (电). In hydro-electric power stations (水电站) the water of fast-flowing rivers is used to turn the machines that produce electricity.
Water is used to make many kinds of food and many of the things we see or use every day.

“The cleaners said we could collect our things today,” Mom said on the drive to school, in her soft voice.
“Do you think ... they saved Big Dog?” Jet tried to sound common, but his throat felt tight (喉咙发紧).
He was worried. Big Dog was his favourite toy. Grandpa had won for him at the fair when he was five. At eight, Jet didn’t need to sleep with it anymore, but it still sat on the shelf above his bed, the shelf that was burned by the fire.
“I am not sure,” Mom said with eyes fixed on the road. “The photo albums (相册) ... they didn’t make it.”
Jet could tell she was really sad.
“We’ll open the boxes together after school,” Mom hugged him goodbye and drove off.
Jet tried to study all day, but he couldn’t keep his mind off Big Dog. He held tight (紧紧地) to his backpack through the halls and it felt like he was carrying his old friend Big Dog. During library time, he checked out a book about dogs.
When Mr. Light said students could do free-draw in the art class, Jet looked at the empty paper. He thought of his mom picking up the boxes of things that had been damaged (破坏) by the fire. Then he realized how sad his mom would be about the photo albums. Most things could still be bought at the store. But the pictures were gone forever. At that moment, he knew what he could draw.
His pencil began to move. There was a picture of Christmas morning, presents under shining lights. Another picture was of that stormy night in the tent when Mom told ghost stories. When the bell rang, twelve drawings formed an album.
After school, when seeing Big Dog waiting for him in the back seat, Jet gave his mom a big hug.
“I have a surprise for you too.” Jet said.
As they went through the pictures, Jet’s mom laughed and cried. At the end of the book was a blank page.
“Looks as if there’s room for one more picture,” Mom said, smiling. “Do you mind if I draw it?”
Jet dug into his backpack and handed her a pencil and some markers. She drew a picture of them sitting in the car looking through their first photo album since the fire.
“I love it, Mom!” Jet said. “Let’s go home and see what other surprises we can find in those boxes.”
18. Why was Jet worried about Big Dog?
A. Because he lost it at his school. B. Because it was a gift for his grandpa.
C. Because his mom wanted to throw it away. D. Because it might have been damaged in fire.
19. What can we learn from the underlined sentence?
A. Jet’s backpack was too heavy. B. Jet missed Big Dog very much.
C. Jet wanted to show Big Dog to his classmates. D. Jet was afraid someone would steal his backpack.
20. Why did Jet decide to draw pictures in art class?
A. To make a new album for his mom. B. To practise his drawing skills. C. To sell his pictures in the store for money. D. To win a prize for the best artist.
21. What does the blank page at the end of Jet’s album mean to his family?

It had a box on its back and was going up the 1, 460-meter-long and 45-degree-inclined (倾斜的) path. While people were tired and out of breath, this clever robot moved easily around the crowds, kept its balance, and carried a 120 kg bag.
Used by a company under the local tourism group, this AI robot helps clean up tourist waste and carry things in the tourist attraction. Voltaire once wrote: “Poetry (诗歌) is the music of the soul, and, above all, of great and feeling souls.” What would he say then about the news that, in a recent study, people couldn’t tell the difference between AI-generated (AI生成) poems and real ones written by some of history’s greatest poets? What if he also learned that people actually (实际上) preferred the AI-generated poems? Would he think that computers have souls?
A new study in the US asked 1, 634 people to read ten poems. Five were poems written by a famous poet. The poets included Geoffrey Chaucer, William Shakespeare, Emily Dickinson, T. S. Eliot and Sylvia Plath. The other five poems were written by ChatGPT 3. 5 in the style of the same poet. The readers were asked which were written by AI and which were written by humans. Most of the people thought the AI creations were the human ones. In fact, the five poems thought least likely to be written by a human were all written by actual humans.
The researchers then asked 696 people to rate (划分等级) the poems based on qualities such as their beauty, feeling and rhythm. The people who didn’t know which poems were human and which were AI preferred the AI poetry.
The researchers published the final finding—people found the AI poems more “easy” and “understandable”.
AI may be able to create poems we prefer, but it seems that it might not be able to create advertisements. Coca-Cola recently showed its newest Christmas advertisement. They recreated the classic scene with people smiling as Coca-Cola truck passed by. But this time, it’s all been made by AI.
The new advertisements have led to an online discussion with people calling them “scared”, “lifeless” and “sad”. However, others say that the AI advertisements are a “game-changer”. Some companies may be encouraged and try to follow Coca-Cola’s example.
What do you think? Can AI replace (取代) human creativity?
54. What’s the result of the study in the US?

【答案】54. People found the AI poems more “easy” and “understandable”.

Jet could tell she was really sad
A. Luck. B. Hope. C. Dream. D. Peace.

One morning at Taishan Mountain in Shandong, a four-legged robot was climbing the challenging “Eighteen Bends”.
With 8 million visitors every year, Taishan has 24,000 tons of waste. Cleaning it by hand is expensive and dangerous. A company worker said, “The robot can climb mountains and cross water while carrying things. It makes the work much easier and faster.”
Over the past few years, there has been a growing number of AI robots. In the robot market, human-like robots sell well, and they are getting more and more popular. Scientists say the market will grow a lot. By 2025, the sales of China’s human-like robots have reached 5.3 billion yuan. By 2029, it could be 75 billion yuan, which would be 32. 7% of the world’s sales. The government is helping a lot. These robots are no longer just for fun but are becoming practical. Cities like Chongqing and Shenzhen are spending money on projects about AI that can interact (互动) with the real world.
AI robots are helping people in many ways. In Chongqing a 70-year-old person who had a stroke (中风) could move again with the help of a wearable AI robot. His doctor said, “These robots can find out what people want to do by looking at how their joints (关节) move. They are changing how we help the old and disabled get better.”
AI robots are also reshaping the idea of toys and pets. For example, Sirius is a small robot dog. It can dance, follow orders and move like a real dog. It’s very popular because it can interact with people. The small, smart, four-legged robot can even understand and answer people’s orders.
From cleaning up rubbish on mountains to being family pets, helping the old and being fun toys, AI robots are slowly becoming part of people’s lives. As one scientist said, this is not just about new technology. It’s about meeting people’s needs.
22. What can the robot dog do on Taishan Mountain?
A. Help with waste cleanup. B. Guide hikers along the way. C. Make people walk faster. D. Bring tourists fun by dancing.
23. What can we infer from paragraph 3?

B. The market for human-like robots in China has a bright future.
C. Human-like robots are mainly used for entertainment in China.
D. The growth of AI robots depends only on the government’s support.
24. How does the writer show that AI robots are helping people’s lives?
A. By telling stories. B. By listing numbers. C. By giving examples. D. By comparing things.
25. What may be the best title of the passage?
