Some travelers are itching to escape the season’s bitter weather. If you want to find the locale that best suits your winter vacation, use these ideas to start planning your getaway.
Honolulu - Oahu
As temperatures begin to drop in other parts of the world, Hawaii’s capital city remains comfortable thanks to average highs in the low to 80 degrees. Visit Chinatown for festive Chinese New Year celebrations, or marvel at the Honolulu City Lights, a month-long Christmas display at Honolulu’s city hall. Keep in mind that winter is the island’s high season, so make your reservations early and expect to share the sand with lots of other sun-seeking travelers.
Sydney
Sydney’s summer begins in December and lasts through February, making this a popular destination for tourists escaping the Northern Hemisphere’s chilly winter weather. Average daytime temperatures hover between the mid-70s and low 80s. This time of year also features a packed events calendar, with can’t-miss sporting events and celebrations like the KPMG Australia Sail Grand Prix and Sydney’s famed New Year’s Eve fireworks display. Remember to book your tickets early, as this can be a pricey and popular time to visit Australia.
Galápagos Islands
Winter in the Galápagos Islands is marked by warm weather and ample opportunities to view wildlife, snorkel and scuba dive. Although this is technically the wet season, the sun shines most days and rain showers are brief. Plan on visiting in December to see newly hatched giant tortoises and male marine lizards displaying vivid colors. For a bit more action, arrive in February to celebrate Carnival on Santa Cruz Island. To read more, click here.
1. What do Oahu and Galapagos Islands have in common?

Erin Willman, who lost her vision at fifteen, faced numerous challenges as people often told her what she cannot do, but she wanted to show them what she can do. Turned down from job applications due to her blindness, Erin decided to create her own path. Within a year, she established White Cane Coffee, becoming its CEO and proving that her disability would not hinder her ambitions.
White Cane Coffee has grown from an idea born on a tough day into a thriving business with Erin’s coffee available in multiple cities. Beyond selling high-quality coffee, the company champions inclusiveness by creating employment opportunities for blind and disabled individuals, equipping them with valuable skills and boosting their confidence. The company’s commitment to inclusiveness is evident in its unique product labeling; each package features Braille, making it one of the pioneering companies to label all products this way. This initiative addresses Erin’s belief that visually impaired individuals should be able to shop independently.
The company provides jobs at a livable wage, offering freedoms and enriching the lives of employees who are often unfairly deprived of such opportunities elsewhere. Erin’s team emphasizes that their mission goes beyond wages — it instills hope and demonstrates the value of every employee as part of a larger effort. Profits from White Cane Coffee do more than just support the staff; they also contribute to leader dog training, community work with children, and fundraising for non-profits.
Erin’s vision extends beyond personal success; her ultimate goal is to effect global change. She prioritizes social impact over material wealth, aiming to use her position to improve lives. Erin and her team remain thankful for the fantastic support from their community and disability support providers. And more importantly, they are proud of how much they accomplish in providing resources and empowerment to disabled people. They hope to continue to create additional jobs, which will help even more people become independent. To that end, they are working on some very exciting projects to help gain the footing necessary to jump to the next level as a company.

While we aim to avoid any appearance of baseless theories, it is noteworthy to observe the long-standing practice of putting magnets (磁铁) in cows, a phenomenon that has been carefully unfolding for years. Why are farmers putting magnets in cows?
Known as cow magnets, the devices are placed inside cattle to deal with “hardware disease”. Hardware Disease occurs after an animal eats a metallic object that then makes a hole in the wall of the reticulum, the second stomach room in ruminant animals This issue arises from the natural eating behaviors of these ruminants, similar to a person at an unlimited food event — quickly and eagerly large bites without sufficient chewing. This fast-paced feeding approach makes them tend to unintentionally consume metal pieces in their food, including broken farm machinery parts, nails and wires used in fencing, for instance.
Metal objects entering the reticulum may result in infections, increased body temperatures, digestive problems, and unease for the animals. To address hardware disease, the main strategy is to prevent metal from entering the cattle’s diet. Farmers have also adopted the method of placing cow magnets into the stomach using either a stomach tube or a balling gun. The cow magnet attracts such objects and prevents them from becoming fixed in the animal’s tissue. These magnets, once positioned, remain within the animals throughout their lifespan, only being removed after death when the cows pass away or are processed for meat.
Moseley, a Veterinary Medicine professor, states in a hardware disease resource, “The magnet gathers foreign metallic objects, reducing the risk of making a hole in the reticulum.” Research shows a mild magnetic field affects a cow’s small blood pathways, improving circulation and aiding recovery without significant impact on the cow or milk quality.
8. Why are magnets fed to cows?
A. To change feeding habits. B. To prevent hardware disease.
C. To improve the milk quality. D. To enhance digestive system.
9. What is the main cause of hardware disease in ruminant animals?
A. Eating without chewing. B. Taking magnets by mistake.
C. Sufficient chewing hard food. D. Swallowing metals accidentally.
10. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To describe the historical practice of putting magnets in cows.
B. To deny the adoption of cow magnets to enhance cattle health.
C. To discuss the influence of a mild magnetic field on milk quality.
D. To explain the reason for using magnets to prevent hardware disease.
11. What might be a logical continuation of the passage?
A. Exploring more potential benefits of cow magnets.
B. Investigating the broader applications of magnets.
C. Discussing the alternative methods of caring for cows.
D. Evaluating the long-term effects of magnets on animals.
B 9. D 10. D 11. A

根据第二段中的“Known as cow magnets, the devices are placed inside cattle to deal with ‘hardware disease’.(这种被称为牛磁铁的设备被放置在牛体内,以应对‘创伤性胃炎’。)”和第三段中的“Metal objects entering the reticulum may result in infections, increased body temperatures, digestive problems, and unease for the animals. To address hardware disease, the main strategy is to prevent metal from entering the cattle’s diet. Farmers have also adopted the method of placing cow magnets into the stomach using either a stomach tube or a balling gun. The cow magnet attracts such objects and prevents them from becoming fixed in the animal’s tissue.(金属物体进入蜂窝胃可能会导致感染、体温升高、消化问题和动物的不安。为了解决创伤性胃炎,主要策略是防止金属进入牛的饮食。农民们还采用了将牛磁铁放入胃里的方法,要么使用胃管,要么使用滚球枪。牛磁铁吸引这些物体,防止它们固定在动物的组织中。)”可知,将牛磁铁放置在牛体内,可以吸引金属物体,防止金属固定在动物的组织里,从而预防创伤性胃炎。故选B。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“This issue arises from the natural eating behaviors of these ruminants, similar to a person at an unlimited food event — quickly and eagerly large bites without sufficient chewing. This fast-paced feeding approach makes them tend to unintentionally consume metal pieces in their food, including broken farm machinery parts, nails and wires used in fencing, for instance.(这个问题源于这些反刍动物的自然进食行为,类似于一个人在无限制的食物活动中——在没有充分咀嚼的情况下快速而急切地大口进食。
和第二段中的“Known as cow magnets, the devices are placed inside cattle to deal with ‘hardware disease’.(这种被称为牛磁铁的设备被放置在牛体内,以应对‘创伤性胃炎’。)”
根据最后一段中的“Research shows a mild magnetic field affects a cow’s small blood pathways, improving circulation and aiding recovery without significant impact on the cow or milk quality.(研究表明,温和的磁场会影响牛的小血液通路,改善血液循环,帮助恢复,而不会对牛或牛奶质量产生重大影响。)” 故选A。
D
Like many people over the past few years, I have found myself turning to audiobooks as my main means of reading literature. I find it far more comfortable to “read with my ears” while my eyes are resting. My consumption of new books has doubled as a result--but a recent paper makes me wonder if this will come at the price of my comprehension.
The study comes from Boaz Keysar and Janet Geipel, both at the University of Chicago, and it draws from the “dual process model” of mental processing. According to this-view, we have two ways of assessing information. System 1 is intuitive (直觉的), relying on natural ability and feeling. It is quick, but likely exposed to misinformation. System 2 is analytical involving the use of logic reasoning. It is mentally demanding. When it is engaged, we think our way through the material step by step. For decades, psychologists have designed various tests to determine which of these two systems a person is using. As one example, consider the/ following question: How many animals of each kind did Moses take on the Ark (方舟)? If you answered two, you were probably only considering the core of the question, which is System 1 thinking. To get to the right answer-zero, you need to think more carefully about the wording, which would allow you to remember it was Noah who built the Ark, not Moses. That is the kind of analytical process.
Keysar and Geipel’s brilliant idea was to investigate whether the sensory form-seeing vs. hearing-of the information would make a difference. They found that it did: when answering these kinds of simple questions, participants were more likely to make errors when the sentences were spoken out loud, rather than written.
A greater reliance on our feelings could be a problem if we are consuming information that needs logical study. For this reason. I will return to reading non-fiction with my eyes rather than my ears. But I won’t stop listening to novels. I am quite happy to go with the flow of my emotions while my critical mind takes a break.
12. What does the author think of listening to audiobooks?
A. It is economical. B. It is demanding.
C. It is time-consuming. D. It is relaxing.
13. Which of the following best describes System 2 model?
A. Fairly reliable. B. Fully automatic.
C. Question-centered. D. Emotion-involved.
14. Why is the Ark mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A. To present a fact. B. To illustrate a view.
C. To introduce a topic. D. To draw a conclusion.
15. What does the author intend to tell us?
A. Listening to books comes at a price.
B. Reading non-fiction books benefits.
C. Critical thinking is a must in reading.
D. Ways of processing information differ.
D 13. A 14. B 15. A
根据文章第一段“Like many people over the past few years, I have found myself turning to audiobooks as my main means of reading literature. I find it far more comfortable to “read with my ears” while my eyes are resting.(像许多人一样,在过去的几年里,我发现自己把有声读物作为阅读文学作品的主要手段。我发现在眼睛休息的时候“用耳朵阅读”要舒服得多。)”以及最后一段“But I won’t stop listening to novels. I am quite happy to go with the flow of my emotions while my critical mind takes a break.(但我不会停止听小说。当我的批判性思维得到休息时,我很高兴随自己的情绪流动而去。)”可知,作者认为听有声读物会让人放松。故选D。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第二段“System 2 is analytical involving the use of logic reasoning. It is mentally demanding. When it is engaged, we think our way through the material step by step.(系统2是分析性的,涉及逻辑推理的使用。这是精神上的要求。当它参与时,我们一步一步地思考材料。)”可知,System 2涉及使用逻辑推理进行信息处理,它要求精神上的努力,通过一步一步地思考材料来得出结论。因此,System 2的结果相对可靠得多。故选A。
根据文章第二段“As one example, consider the/ following question: How many animals of each kind did Moses take on the Ark(方舟)? If you answered two, you were probably only considering the core of the question, which is System 1 thinking. To get to the right answer-zero, you need to think more carefully about the wording, which would allow you to remember it was Noah who built the Ark, not Moses. That is the kind of analytical process.(举个例子,考虑下面的问题:摩西带了多少种动物上了方舟?
故选A。

It was the Easter holidays, and school was closed for two weeks. For me, the Easter holidays were so boring that it was impossible to find something fun to do. My mom had suggested that I do some studies since the promotion test was coming up. However, I didn’t follow my mother’s suggestion. Instead, I went outside to seek out my friends to play with. When I had successfully contacted some of my friends, none of them seemed to be much in a playful mood, but one friend Jimmy agreed to play with me. He suggested we go down to the river and just relax there. The river was not far from my home, and we arrived there quickly.
Just relaxing on the river bank with nothing but some waste logs, it wasn’t fun for us at first. Clearly what was on our minds was to jump into the river and just take a swim in the clear cool water. So we took off our clothes down to our underwear and walked into the shallow part of the water. The water was truly cool and refreshing and we were starting to have fun then, playing and laughing, as we splashed the cool water onto each other’s faces.
Then we started to chase each other around on the river bank and then we ran straight into the river. We were having so much fun that we didn’t notice danger was around the corner. Before Jimmy could know it, and before he could do anything to keep his balance, he lost his footing on a tree branch, which was in the shallow part of the water, and slipped, bringing his whole entire body into the deep water. He tried to resurface from the water but found it extremely hard to keep his head above the water.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I was scared to see him struggling in the water but I knew I must rescue him. I took a deep breath to keep calm. Looking around, I found a waste log, I threw it to him immediately and asked him to hold it and not to give up. At the same time I yelled for help, hoping someone could come to our rescue. Luckily, my mom heard my cries, rushed out of the house and raced towards us. She jumped into the water and reached out her hands to pull him. Several neighbors also quickly joined the rescue. They managed to get Jimmy out of the water. Finally, Jimmy was saved, pale and shivering.
After a while, Jimmy recovered from panic and thanked my mom and the neighbors. We hugged each other in tears. I thought my mom would scold me. But she just held us in her arms tightly. She warned us it was dangerous to swim in the river. Both of us felt ashamed and promised never to do that again. This was really a special Easter, one I would never forget. For Jimmy, he had a narrow escape from drowning. For me, I felt the kindness of my neighbors.

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

I was scared to see him struggling in the water but I knew I must rescue him.

After a while, Jimmy recovered from panic and thanked my mom and the neighbors.
