Everyone has “down days”. Maybe it’s because of the bad weather, or the poor grade on a difficult test, and some days teenagers just act uninterested in life or school. But these symptoms (症状) often pass quickly, as teens move on to new school subjects, or meet friends, preventing themselves from thinking what troubles them at the moment. But if a teenager displays symptoms of sadness for more than two weeks, it might point to something serious.
As teenagers develop, they push new boundaries (边界), complain about rules and look for more free rights from their parents. According to the online Health Guide on Adolescent Development, parents must be lasting figures in their teenagers’ life, providing safe boundaries for teens to grow, even if the teenagers act like these boundaries are unwanted.
Parents need to provide rules, while also remaining flexible (灵活的) and respectful of the growing teens’ need for freedom. For example, teenagers will often feel frustrated, embarrassed, and even angry that though they want freedom, they still need to ask their parents for agreement to go to a friend’s house, or need their mothers to take them to school.
The US Department of Education says that parents should respect (尊重) and support their teens’ choices as long as those choices won’t have long-term harmful effects. For example, even if a parent doesn’t prefer the music his or her teen listens to, it’s unlikely that the choice of music will prevent that teen from entering a good college, or lead to health problems. However, if that teen is drinking alcohol and driving, parents must get through strict punishments to teach him/her that there are bad results of poor choices that come with increased freedom.
24. Why do teens’ feelings of bad days usually disappear quickly?
A. Their teachers help them. B. They take some medicine.
C. Their parents talk with them. D. They shift their attention.
25. What does the example in Paragraph 3 show?
A. Freedom must be given at any time. B. Teens are mad about being controlled.
C. Teens need both freedom and proper rules. D. Rules must be absolutely strict for teens.
26. What should parents do about their teens’ choices?
A. Support their helpful hobbies. B. Tell them which college to attend.
C. Cancel their extra-curricular activities. D. Get them away from singing pop songs.
27. What is the best title for the text?
A. How to Be with Growing Teens. B. Causes of Teens’ Sadness.
C. Teens’ Worries About Strict Rules. D. The Importance of Making Friends with Teens.

People have been wondering why elephants do not develop cancer even though they have lifespans that are similar to humans, living for around 50 to 70 years.
Now scientists believe they know why. A team at the University of Chicago has found that elephants carry a substantial number of genes that stop tumors developing. To be precise, they found 20 copies of an anti-tumor gene called TP53 in elephants. Most other species, including humans, only carry one copy.
According to the research, the extra copies of the gene improve the animal’s sensitivity to DNA damage, which lets the cells quickly kill themselves when damaged before they can go on to form deadly tumors.
“An increased risk of developing cancer has stood in the way of the evolution (进化) of large body sizes in many animals,” the study author Dr. Vincent Lynch told The Guardian. If every living cell has the same chance of becoming cancerous, large creatures with a long lifespan like whales and elephants should have a greater risk of developing cancer than humans and rats. But across species, the risk of cancer does not show a connection with body mass.
This phenomenon was found by Oxford University scientist Richard Peto in the 1970s and later named “Peto’s paradox”. Biologists believe it results from larger animals using protection that many smaller animals do not use. In the elephant’s case, the making of TP53 is nature’s way of keeping this species alive.
The study also found that when the same genes were brought to life in rats, they had the same cancer resistance as elephants. This means researchers could use the discovery to develop new treatments that can help stop cancer spreading or even developing in the first place.
“Nature has already figured out how to prevent cancer,” said Joshua Schiffman, a biologist at the School of Medicine, the University of Utah. “It’s up to us to learn how different animals deal with the problem so that we can use those strategies to prevent cancer in people.”
28. Why are elephants unlikely to develop cancer?
A. They have a rather large body size.
B. Their genes suffer no DNA damage.
C. Certain genes in their body kill existing tumors.
D. They carry many genes to prevent tumors developing.
29. According to the passage, what has been a risk in the evolution of large animals?
A. Deadly tumors. B. The huge body mass.
C. Cells killing themselves. D. Sensitivity to DNA damage.
30. What does the underlined part “This phenomenon” in Paragraph 5 probably refer to?
A. Larger animals have protection from TP53.
B. The risk of cancer is not related to body sizes.
C. Larger animals suffer the same risk of cancer as smaller ones.
D. The huger animals are, the bigger risk of cancer they will have.
31. What can be concluded from the passage?
A. Depending on nature is surely enough to fight against cancer.
B. The TP53 genes have proved useful in stopping cancer in people.
C. Humans are expected to prevent cancer with the making of TP53.
D. The extra copies of elephants’ genes are used to cure cancer patients.

Born in Wuzhen in Zhejiang, Qian Lihuai has a unique bond with bamboo and whether it’s in the form of indoor bamboo bonsai or backyard bamboo groves, the material is an essential element in his home.
Qian grew up in the village known for its bamboo weaving and after studying industrial design at the Zhejiang University of Science and Technology, he began to develop an interest in the technique, learning how to do it himself.
He also traveled widely in Hunan, Hubei, Sichuan and Yunnan provinces to learn local bamboo weaving techniques. “The variations are quite large in amount across the regions, and bamboo weaving comes in a wide arrange of forms. It’s sometimes used to make agricultural tools, sometimes to make daily necessities, and sometimes for artistic purposes.” Qian said. “In Wuzhen, each place focuses on producing a specific item. For instance, our village’s distinguishing feature is in making bamboo trays especially for raising silkworms.”
During a visit to a traditional basket maker in Shengzhou, Zhejiang, Qian saw that instead of using nails to fasten the basket together, the craftsman used a slanting (倾斜的) cut on the bamboo to create a precise fit that caused the joint to not be noticed. “I rarely encounter such a level of craftsmanship. He even creates small molds and modifies tools himself to improve the weaving process,” Qian says.
During his visits, he was moved by the dedication of the weavers to their craft. These experiences inspired him to return to his hometown of Wuzhen and throw himself into the bamboo weaving industry in 2013.
Bamboo techniques he has developed or improved are now widely used in everything from home furnishings to clothing, part of a growing trend toward replacing the use of plastic with bamboo, that demonstrates a continuity of the traditional Chinese culture in which bamboo has long been cherished as a topic for arts and a material for daily objects that we use in our home.
32. Why does he has a special bond with bamboo?
A. Because of the living environment. B. Because of university majors.
C. Because of his interest. D. Because of his family background.
33. What can we infer from the third paragraph?
A. There are cultural differences in different regions.
B. Bamboo grows in many places.
C. Bamboo weaving techniques have diversity and uniqueness.
D. Bamboo weaving techniques are used in raising silkworms.
34. What inspired him to devote himself bamboo weaving industry?
A. His bamboo weaving experiences.
B. His experience of visiting bamboo weaving craftsmen.
C. The rare level of craftsmanship among craftsmen.
D. Craftsmen’ s dedication to bamboo weaving.
35. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Weaving the wonder of bamboo.
B. Development of Bamboo techniques.
C. Bamboo woven items at home.
D. A visit to a traditional basket maker.

How to protect your privacy when you travel
It hasn’t been an easy year for the privacy of travelers, at least so far. Data leaks, surveillance (监视) worries and those troublesome cameras in airplane seatbacks and hotel rooms are enough to make passengers anxious.___36___ Fortunately, there are ways to safeguard your privacy on land and in the air. These tips can help you deal with these troubles.
___37___ “It’s not clever to declare on Facebook that you’re travelling to somewhere, reminding a wide range of people that your property is sitting empty,” says Danny McLoughlin. “That puts your security at risk.” Wait until you return to start posting vacation photos.
Some homeowners renting their residences may install security cameras. Travelers should find out if the hosts are required to disclose the presence of surveillance devices. If the rental comes with cameras, ensure they aren’t in a sensitive area by conducting a careful sweep.___38___
Although you can’t control how a hotel or airline handles—or mishandles—your data, you can take reasonable steps to ensure the information it has won’t get you into trouble. ___39___ But some of the worst data leaks happen when you’re staying at a hotel. For example, a hotel clerk sometimes asks for your name and then announces your room number after you’ve checked in. You’re better off handing the employee your ID when he or she asks for your name and asking him/her to write your room number on a piece of paper. Why? ___40___ Just to be sure, never leave the customer copy behind. You can destroy it later, but keep it under your control.
A. It’s never been better.
B. Perhaps they shouldn’t be.
C. Never broadcast your journey on social media.
D. There are other people on the other side of the wall.
E. However, travelers are not powerless against these threats.
F. Some travelers only offer the bare minimum, such as a P.O.box instead of a home address.
G. Report anything doubtful to the host immediately—and if you don’t like what you hear, leave.

In a busy local supermarket, Emma, a diligent college student, worked as a cashier to make ends meet. Her days were in a rush of classes, part-time shifts, and struggling to realize her dream of becoming an artist. Despite her tight schedule, Emma’s firm commitment meant she never missed a day of work.
One particular day, though, would prove to be unlike any other. Emma’s workday typically began at 3 pm and ended around 10 pm. That day progressed like any other until Emma found herself with just an hour left before her first break.
Then a weary-looking mother arrived at the checkout with her son and a grocery cart. The mother appeared tired, with sleepy eyes and untidy hair. Emma greeted her with a warm smile, “Have you had a long day?” The mother responded with a smile, saying, “Yes, it’s been a tiring one. This little one requested lasagna (千层面) for lunch, and I found we were out of food.”
The woman explained that her five-year-old son, Tristan, was the man of the house, and his younger brother was in hospital, putting an emotional weight on him. Emma couldn’t help but empathize, recalling her own experiences as a child with a sick brother.
Emma asked Tristan for his name, and as he cheerfully replied, “Tristan”, Emma presented him with a lollipop (棒棒糖). She ran it through the register to ring it up before handing it to the delighted young boy.
What Emma hadn’t noticed during her initial scan of the woman’s items was the growing excitement on Tristan’s face as each beep (滴滴声) from the register resounded. Eager and enthusiastic, he asked, “Can I help? Can I help?” Emma’s heartwarming response was, “Of course!” She lifted Tristan to her workstation, teaching him how to ring up groceries.
Unknown to Emma, Tristan’s mother took a photo of their interaction, capturing her son’s pure joy in a moment frozen in time. Moved to tears, she took more photos of Emma and Tristan at work and expressed her gratitude before leaving.

Good morning, everyone, and welcome to a new school term. We have an exciting time ahead for both staff and students. Next week we will be welcoming our new first year students and I hope that you will all make them feel welcome and help them settle in. Now I want to remind everyone that our school will be having a government safety check this Friday. The officials are due to arrive before morning meeting and will spend the first couple of hours checking the electrical system. Then they will move on to checking the fire alarms and the safety doors, which could mean they will be coming into your classroom. During an earlier visit, an official pointed out a safety issue with the surface of our football field. It has now been closed until changes have been made. However, football can still be played in the schoolyard. Depending on the results of the examination, there may have to be more changes. To discuss this topic, our school will close on Friday afternoon for a special staff meeting. That’s all for today. Thank you.

D 25. C 26. A 27. A
根据第一段“But these symptoms (症状) often pass quickly, as teens move on to new school subjects, or meet friends, preventing themselves from thinking what troubles them at the moment. (但这些症状通常很快消退——因为青少年开始接触新的学科、结识朋友,从而避免自己继续纠结于当下的困扰。)”可知,青少年情绪低落时,通过转向新学科或交友转移注意力,所以通常消散得很快。故选D。
25题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Parents need to provide rules, while also remaining flexible (灵活的) and respectful of the growing teens’ need for freedom. For example, teenagers will often feel frustrated, embarrassed, and even angry that though they want freedom, they still need to ask their parents for agreement to go to a friend’s house, or need their mothers to take them to school. (父母需要制定规则,同时保持灵活态度,并尊重青少年日益增长的自由需求。例如,青少年虽然渴望自由,但仍需征求父母同意才能去朋友家,或需要母亲接送上学,因此常常感到沮丧、尴尬甚至愤怒。)”可知,第三段的例子“仍需父母同意才能去朋友家,或需要母亲接送上学”体现规则与自由的平衡,说明了青少年既需要自由也需要适当规则。故选C。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“The US Department of Education says that parents should respect (尊重) and support their teens’ choices as long as those choices won’t have long-term harmful effects. (美国教育部指出,父母应尊重并支持青少年的选择——只要这些选择不会对其造成长期不良影响。)”可知,对待青少年的选择,父母应支持对他们有益的爱好。故选A。
根据第一段“But if a teenager displays symptoms of sadness for more than two weeks, it might point to something serious. (但如果青少年连续两周以上表现出悲伤情绪,可能预示着严重问题。)”,第二段“According to the online Health Guide on Adolescent Development, parents must be lasting figures in their teenagers’ life, providing safe boundaries for teens to grow, even if the teenagers act like these boundaries are unwanted. (根据《青少年发展在线健康指南》,父母必须在子女的生活中成为稳定的存在,为其成长提供安全边界,即使青少年表现出对这些边界的抗拒)”,第三段“Parents need to provide rules, while also remaining flexible (灵活的) and respectful of the growing teens’ need for freedom. (父母需要制定规则,同时保持灵活态度,并尊重青少年对自由日益增长的需求。)”,第四段“The US Department of Education says that parents should respect (尊重) and support their teens’ choices as long as those choices won’t have long-term harmful effects. (美国教育部指出,只要青少年的选择不会带来长期负面影响,父母就应尊重并支持他们的决定。)”可知,全文围绕青少年的情绪特点展开,提出父母需提供安全边界,制定规则同时给予自由,并尊重青少年无害的选择。由此判断,这篇文章的核心是讲述如何与成长中的青少年相处。选项A“How to Be with Growing Teens (如何与成长中的青少年相处)”与文章核心契合,适合作标题。故选A。

D 29. A 30. B 31. C
根据第二段“A team at the University of Chicago has found that elephants carry a substantial number of genes that stop tumors developing. To be precise, they found 20 copies of an anti-tumor gene called TP53 in elephants. Most other species, including humans, only carry one copy.(芝加哥大学的一个研究小组发现,大象携带大量阻止肿瘤生长的基因。确切地说,他们在大象体内发现了20个名为TP53的抗肿瘤基因拷贝。大多数其他物种,包括人类,只携带一个拷贝。)”可知,大象不太可能患癌症是因为它们携带许多防止肿瘤发展的基因。故选D项。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中的““An increased risk of developing cancer has stood in the way of the evolution (进化) of large body sizes in many animals,” the study author Dr. Vincent Lynch told The Guardian. (该研究的作者文森特·林奇博士告诉《卫报》:“患癌症风险的增加阻碍了许多动物向大体型进化。’”)”可知,在大型动物的进化过程中,致命的肿瘤是一个风险。故选A项。
根据第四段“If every living cell has the same chance of becoming cancerous, large creatures with a long lifespan like whales and elephants should have a greater risk of developing cancer than humans and rats. But across species, the risk of cancer does not show a connection with body mass.(如果每个活细胞都有同样的癌变机会,那么像鲸鱼和大象这样寿命长的大型生物患癌症的风险应该比人类和老鼠更高。但在不同物种中,患癌症的风险与体型大小没有关联。)”可知,患癌症的风险与体型大小没有关联,划线短语“This phenomenon”为特指上文中的内容,所以划线短语指代的是“患癌症的风险与体型大小没有关联”。故选B项。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段““Nature has already figured out how to prevent cancer,” said Joshua Schiffman, a biologist at the School of Medicine, the University of Utah. “It’s up to us to learn how different animals deal with the problem so that we can use those strategies to prevent cancer in people.(“大自然已经找到了预防癌症的方法,”犹他大学医学院的生物学家约书亚·施夫曼(Joshua Schiffman)说。“我们该去了解不同动物是如何应对这个问题的,从而利用这些策略来预防人类的癌症。”)”以及前文提到大象体内TP53基因的作用可知,人类有望通过对TP53基因的研究来预防癌症。故选C项。

E 37. C 38. G 39. F 40. D
根据上文“Data leaks, surveillance(监视) worries and those troublesome cameras in airplane seatbacks and hotel rooms are enough to make passengers anxious.(数据泄露、对监视的担忧,以及飞机座椅靠背和酒店房间里那些令人讨厌的摄像头,这些都足以让旅客感到焦虑。)”可知,上文提到旅行者面临数据泄露等问题感到焦虑;而下文“Fortunately, there are ways to safeguard your privacy on land and in the air.(幸运的是,无论是在陆地上还是在空中,都有一些方法可以保护你的隐私。)” E“However, travelers are not powerless against these threats.(然而,旅行者并非对这些威胁无能为力。)”
根据下文““It’s not clever to declare on Facebook that you’re travelling to somewhere, reminding a wide range of people that your property is sitting empty,” says Danny McLoughlin. “That puts your security at risk.” Wait until you return to start posting vacation photos. (Danny McLoughlin说:“在脸书上宣布你要去某个地方旅行可不是明智之举,这会提醒很多人你的房子正空着,这会让你的安全面临风险。”等到你回来之后再开始发布度假照片吧。)”可知,下文提到不要在脸书上宣布自己去旅行了,等回来再发照片,可知此段讲的是不要在社交媒体上公布自己的旅行信息。选项C“Never broadcast your journey on social media.(永远不要在社交媒体上公布你的行程。)”
根据上文“Some homeowners renting their residences may install security cameras. Travelers should find out if the hosts are required to disclose the presence of surveillance devices. If the rental comes with cameras, ensure they aren’t in a sensitive area by conducting a careful sweep.(一些出租房屋的房主可能会安装安全摄像头。旅行者应该了解房东是否被要求告知是否存在监控设备。如果租的房子配有摄像头,要通过仔细检查确保它们不在敏感区域。)”可知,上文讲述的是租房时遇到摄像头的情况。选项G“Report anything doubtful to the host immediately—and if you don’t like what you hear, leave.(如果有任何可疑情况,立即向房东报告——如果你对听到的解释不满意,就离开。)”
根据上文“Although you can’t control how a hotel or airline handles—or mishandles—your data, you can take reasonable steps to ensure the information it has won’t get you into trouble.(虽然你无法控制酒店或航空公司如何处理——或错误处理——你的数据,但你可以采取合理的措施,确保他们所掌握的信息不会给你带来麻烦。)” F“Some travelers only offer the bare minimum, such as a P.O.box instead of a home address.(一些旅行者只提供最基本的信息,比如用邮政信箱代替家庭住址。)”
根据上文“For example, a hotel clerk sometimes asks for your name and then announces your room number after you’ve checked in. You’re better off handing the employee your ID when he or she asks for your name and asking him/her to write your room number on a piece of paper. Why?(例如,酒店职员有时会询问你的姓名,然后在你办理入住手续后公布你的房间号。当职员询问你的姓名时,你最好把身份证递给他或她,并让他或她把你的房间号写在一张纸上。为什么呢?)”可知,上文提问为什么要让员工把房间号写在纸上。选项D“There are other people on the other side of the wall.(墙的另一边可能还有其他人在听呢。)”
