I have become a writer after I broke my violin. When I was grade four, my school started a school music team. My friend Irene and I chose the violin. Every week, we walked to music lessons together, excited to play in the music team.
Our music teacher Mr. Baumgartner was very strict. He said: “If you break your instruments, you’ll have to leave the program!” I tried my best, but the violin was hard for me. One day during practice, something bad happened — the bridge (the wood piece holding strings) broke off with a loud snap!
I felt very scared. Remembering Mr. Baumgartner’s warning, I tried fixing it with glue (胶水) secretly. When Mr. Baumgartner saw my messy work, he shook his head: “You can’t stay in the music team. Join the singing group instead.”
Though sad at first, I discovered fun in group singing. Later, I passed tryouts (选拔赛) for the All City Honor Chorus with four other girls.
Everything changed after a big singing event. My English teacher asked: “Who wants to write about this for our school newspaper?” For some reason, I raised my hand. I loved reading books, but writing? That was new! When I saw my words printed with my name, I felt like a superhero.
By middle school, I became the leader of the newspaper team. Writing became my favorite thing. Now I understand: breaking that violin helped me find my true talent.

C
We go to bed when we’re tired. Sometimes however, we wake up feeling tired even though we’ve slept for ten hours. Should we get more sleep then?
We go through life thinking we’ve rested as long as we’ve gotten enough sleep. But in fact, rest is much more than our nightly hours of shut-eye. Many of us are missing out on the other types of rest that we badly need.
The first type of rest we need is physical rest. It can be passive (被动的) or active. Passive physical rest refers to sleeping, while active physical rest includes activities like yoga (瑜伽). These activities help your body relax.
Have you ever heard your parents or anyone else complain that they have a hard time focusing on their work? Have they ever said that when they lie down at night to sleep, they have trouble “turning off” their brains as conversations from the day fill their thoughts? These people need mental rest. You can advise them to take a short break every two hours throughout their workday. These breaks remind them to slow down a bit.
The third type of rest is sensory rest. Bright lights, computer screens and background noise can make our senses feel tired. But this problem is easy to solve. You can close your eyes for a minute in the middle of the day or put away your electronics for a while.
Then it’s time to have a rest creativity. Allowing yourself to take in the beauty of nature—even if it’s just at a local park—provides you with this type of rest. You can also place your favourite artwork around your desk. Enjoying art is another great way to get creative rest.
The last two types of rest we need are social rest and emotional rest. Spend some time with positive and supportive people. Try to open up to them and share the hard things that have been bothering you lately.
Now you know—we need much more than a good night’s sleep to feel well-rested. It’s time for us to focus on getting the right type of rest we need.
36. What is an example of “active physical rest” mentioned in the text?
A. Sleeping for 8 hours. B. Doing yoga. C. Watching TV. D. Eating a meal.
37. Who might need “sensory rest” according to the text?
A. A student studying in a quiet library. B. A housewife working in a kitchen.
C. A child playing in a park. D. A person working long hours on a computer.
38. How many types of rest are mentioned in this passage?
A. Three B. Four C. Five D. Six
39. Which is the best structure of this passage?
A. B. C. D.
40. What can we learn from the passage?
A. We need not only sleep but also the right type of rest.
B. All of us can hardly sleep well because of our electronics.
C. We will feel energetic if we sleep more than 10 hours a day.
D. Sleep is more important than any other thing in our daily life.

A Memorable School Art Festival
A few months ago, our school held an art festival, and it was one of the most memorable school activities I’ve ever taken part in.
Before the festival, I was chosen to be part of the performance team. We spent weeks preparing for it. Every day after school, we practiced dancing hard. We had to remember the complex dance moves and cooperate well with each other. It was not easy. But with the encouragement of my teammates and the dance teacher, I kept practicing.
Finally, the day of the art festival arrived. When the music started and the lights focused on us, I was so nervous at first. But as I began to dance, I gradually forgot about my nervousness and lost myself in the performance. The audience’s applause and cheers gave us even more energy.
Through this activity, I’ve learned the importance of perseverance. No matter how difficult something seems at first, as long as I keep trying, I can overcome the difficulties.
Baumgartner’s warning I tried fixing it with glue (胶水) secretly.

We go to bed when we’re tired. Sometimes, however, we wake up feeling tired even though we’ve slept for ten hours.
