Living in China, I often cannot imagine how active and busy some of the elderly are. Whether singing opera, dancing or even practicing tai chi, China’s elderly communities enjoy great outdoor social activities. It continues to surprise me. I wish that were more common for elderly communities back in the UK.
My grandma lives in a nursing home in England. While she plays bingo, a game, and enjoys concerts once in a while, few activities get her up on her feet and truly communicate with others. She hardly ever goes outside. This situation is common for many of the elderly in the UK. It’s just not part of the culture, and I think that’s a shame. Staying active in social activities is so important for health, and it is something elderly communities in China clearly value. What’s more, it’s completely inexpensive.
According to an expert Judith Farquhar, it’s popular for the elderly in China to dance and exercise in public parks or squares. “For these people, dancing and other healthy activities are smart ways to save money. ” Farquhar said, “Dancing also helps them create a social network to fight against loneliness in old age.”
Many elderly people are feeling left out. I hope the British government can build more active social communities than before. The future elderly communities in the UK may learn from the inspiring elderly people in China. I’d love to see groups of British grandmas and grandpas enjoy their old age and do active things together to stay happy and healthy.

Have you ever heard of daylight saving time (DST 夏令时)? In most of the United States, people change their clocks twice a year. In spring, they move the clocks one hour forward, and in fall, they move them one hour back. This helps people have more daylight in the evening during summer.
In the US, DST starts on the second Sunday of March and ends on the first Sunday of November. In March, the clocks move forward, so people lose one hour of sleep. This is called “spring forward”. In November, the clocks move back again. This is called “fall back”. These phrases also help people remember when DST starts and ends! DST started during World War I to help save energy. People thought that if there was more daylight in the evening, they would use less electricity. Later, the US made it a national rule. For many middle and high school students, DST can be difficult. In spring, they have to wake up earlier, and sometimes it is still dark outside. Many students feel more tired after the time change. In fall, they get one more hour of sleep, which feels nice!
When I was in school, I hated waking up in the dark for the school bus. I’d still feel sleepy even after getting to school, so it was a pain to always keep my head up and stay awake for my morning classes. Even now, DST makes it harder to message my friends and family in different US time zones. Some people want to end DST. Others think it is an important tradition. It is still a hot topic.

Earl Brown was invited onto a radio show because he saved young Wilson out of danger on 15th April, 2022.
It was 7:15 a. m. Earl Brown was waiting for the train at a train station. His two sons, aged five and eight, were with him.
Suddenly, Wilson fell down on the platform (站台) because of his heart problem. He tried to get up, but then fell again-this time, onto the rails. Just then, a train was arriving. At the scary moment, Earl Brown stayed calm. He looked at Wilson and the space that he was in. Earl Brown realized, “The train is going to run over Wilson. If he tries to get up, the train will kill him. But if he lies on the ground and doesn’t move, he’ll be OK.” So he made a difficult decision. It was to jump down and lie on top of Wilson. He did so and kept Wilson down on the ground.
The train driver saw the two men. He was scared, but he couldn’t stop the train in time. Five carriages (车厢) ran over the two before the train stopped.
The people on the platform were shocked. When Earl Brown heard them shouting in fear, he said loudly right away, “We’re fine. Tell my sons I’m OK.” The people around all cheered- they were amazed at Earl Brown’s courage.
