A Shining Moment
How time flies! It’s time to say goodbye to my junior high school life. Looking back, a shining moment stands out.
Last year, I won the second prize in an English speech contest. To prepare the contest, I practiced daily, recorded my voice, and asked teachers for advice. Though nervous, I spoke confidently on stage. When my name was announced, my heart raced with joy.
This experience taught me that effort leads to growth. Even small progress builds courage. Now I realize challenges are opportunities to shine.
In high school, I look forward to joining more activities. Every challenge will be a chance to create new shining moments.

Yellow Dress
By Janet Lee
Mary had a yellow dress
Bought from the department store.
It looked as beautiful as the moon,
And as bright as the sun.
Mary wore all the time
The yellow dress I felt so right.
Every day from day to night
I saw her in the dress so bright.
“Buy me a yellow dress,”
I cried to Mom and Dad,
“As beautiful and bright
As the dress the girl living near has!”
I cried and cried and cried,
Until they said with sad eyes,
“We need food for your baby sister,
And clothes for your coming brother.”
Since then I’ve learned
Mary’s yellow dress
Is better to dream of
Than to ask for.
16.From the poem, we know that Mary and the writer may be __________.
A.classmates B.relatives C.neighbours D.sisters
17.Why does the writer say, “Every day from day to night / I saw her in the dress so bright”?
A.The writer lived with Mary. B.The dress had sun shapes on it.
C.The writer liked the dress very much. D.The dress was Mary’s school uniform.
18.What did the writer’s parents mean by their words?
A.They did not like the yellow dress.
B.They did not have money for a dress.
C.They already had a dress for her baby sister.
D.They would ask Mary where to buy the yellow dress.
16.推理判断题,根据“Mary had a yellow dress”和“As beautiful and bright. As the dress the girl living near has!”
17.推理判断题,根据“Everyday from day to night. I saw her in the dress so bright.”和“Buy me a yellow dress.”
18.推理判断题,根据“We need food for your baby sister. And clothes for your coming brother.”

A bell rings at 7 pm every evening in Mohityache Avadgaon village, in India, telling people that it is time for everyone to turn off screen devices (设备), like televisions and mobile phones. At 8:30 pm, the bell rings the second time, telling the 3,000 villagers that screen-free time is over. The leaders of the village introduced it so that young people could focus on their homework and not be influenced by funny videos or phone messages. However, some say that a screen simply allows people to get information — it is not harmful in itself. A person can decide for themselves when to put down a device. So should you set limits (限制) on screen time?
Yes—screen time should be limited
Phones, computers and TV are great ways for getting information and lots of fun. However, they can be addictive (使人成瘾的) and some people need help to break from them. Even if people are chatting on their phone or playing online games together, they can still feel lonely. Screen-free time means people can connect with family and friends in the real world. It’s also a great chance for people to go outside and be active, which is good for their health. Too much screen time can lead to other problems, such as not sleeping properly and being short on creativity.
No—people can manage their screen time
Through devices like phones and computers, people can find answers to many questions. Screen time can be productive—you can read great works of literature (文学), discover wonderful facts or read about important things happening in the world. It is great for homework and curious minds. Electronic devices also allow friends and family to stay in touch. Most people naturally take screen breaks, for example when they eat or exercise. People should be free to judge for themselves how much screen time they should have.
Now that you’ve read a lot about it, tell us what you think on the website theweekiunior.co.uk/polls. Choose YES if you think screen time should be limited, or NO if you don’t. We’ll show the results next week.

①Help people get information more easily. ②Make people go outside and be healthy.
③Help people stay alone by themselves. ④Make people connect with the real world.
A.①④ B.②③ C.②④ D.③④
21.Which of the following in the dictionary best explains the underlined word “productive” in Paragraph 3?

③Widely accepted and used for a long time.
④Full of new, exciting or dangerous experiences.
A.① B.② C.③ D.④
22.What’s the writer’s purpose in writing the passage?
A.To encourage readers to manage their screen time freely.
B.To advise readers to manage and control their screen time.
C.To lead readers to form a good habit of doing homework.
D.To collect ideas about whether to cut the screen time.
根据“Screen-free time means people can connect with family and friends in the real world. It’s also a great chance for people to go outside and be active, which is good for their health.”
根据“Screen time can be productive—you can read great works of literature (文学), discover wonderful facts or read about important things happening in the world.”
根据“Now that you’ve read a lot about it, tell us what you think on the website”可知,作者想让读者在网站上写下自己的想法,由此可知作者写这篇文章的目的是收集关于是否减少看屏幕时间的意见。故选D。
C
When introducing the rules of the class, the first words my math teacher Ms. Whitney began with were “kindness” and “homework”. Now, I can imagine that you must be feeling what I was feeling then: Why would homework, which is already so difficult, has something to do with anything good?
As if understanding my confusion (困惑), Ms. Whitney began to explain in her gentle but authoritative (权威的) voice, “Homework sometimes needs cooperation. When others can’t solve a problem, and you can do it, you can help them. It provides you with the chance to grow and learn.” It was at that moment I heard a pop in my head, a feeling as if the confusion around the two words had disappeared. Homework brings out kindness, and kindness in turn creates an environment that encourages everyone to practice.
Ms. Whitney proved the truth behind those words during the following days. Every day, we were divided into groups and made to stand next to each other, working on problems that came like a flood. The first day, I was a bit uncomfortable working with another person. But soon, as we talked about questions and helped each other, that uncomfortable feeling began to disappear.
In a classroom filled with friendly communication and Ms. Whitney’s happy voice calling out, “Kindness and Homework!” whenever she saw one of us sitting alone or in need of help, math class was not as boring as it had been before. It was hard to believe that homework problems could change the way people think. In the past, I could only think of one way to solve a problem, but now I can think of more than two ways. Learning in Ms. Whitney’s class has helped me find the reason to learn, which will help me for the rest of my journey abroad.
23.What does the underlined word “cooperation” mean?
A.To work together. B.To be independent.
C.To be careful. D.To have fun.
24.When did the writer begin to understand the relation between “homework” and “kindness”?
A.When the writer was working with another person.
B.When Ms. Whitney began to introduce the rules of the class.
C.When the writer saw someone sitting alone or in need of help.
D.When Ms. Whitney explained in her gentle but authoritative voice.
25.How did Ms. Whitney prove the truth behind her words?
A.By talking with her students.
B.By explaining her words over and over again.
C.By dividing her students into groups to work on problems.
D.By calling out “Kindness and Homework” loudly.
26.Which of the following will most probably happen in the rest of the writer’s journey abroad?
A.The writer gets bored with math class.
B.The writer prefers to do things on her own.
C.Homework is not difficult for the writer at all.
D.Homework means more than just finishing the task.
【答案】23.A 24.D 25.C 26.D
根据“As if understanding my confusion, Ms. Whitney began to explain in her gentle but authoritative voice, ‘Homework sometimes needs cooperation. When others can’t solve a problem, and you can do it, you can help them. It provides you with the chance to grow and learn.’” cooperation的意思是合作,即To work together。 故选A。
根据“As if understanding my confusion, Ms. Whitney began to explain in her gentle but authoritative voice,…It was at that moment I heard a pop in my head, a feeling as if the confusion around the two words had disappeared. ”可知,当惠特尼女士用她温柔但权威的声音解释的时候,作者开始理解家庭作业和善良之间的关系。故选D。
25.细节理解题。根据“Ms. Whitney proved the truth behind those words during the following days. Every day, we were divided into groups and made to stand next to each other, working on problems that came like a flood.”
根据“Homework brings out kindness, and kindness in turn creates an environment that encourages everyone to practice.”以及“Learning in Ms. Whitney’s class has helped me find the reason to learn, which will help me for the rest of my journey abroad.”
D
①Do you often hear birdsong outside the window? How do you feel when you hear it? In fact, it is shown that birdsong can influence people’s life.
②Birdsong sounds especially nice in winter because it reminds people of spring. A study found that listening to birdsong for six minutes can help reduce people’s stress. It’s hard to feel sad when you hear birds singing or talking, as the energy in their songs make people feel like walking in the garden. Unlike music, which can sometimes make you produce strong feelings, birdsong is usually seen as positive or neutral (中性的). If you live in a noisy city, birdsong can be a welcome relief from the stress caused by outside noise.
③Another benefit is that birdsong has also been found to improve focus and concentration. It can help people focus on their tasks and be more productive. That’s because when people play birdsong in the background at work, it seems that a “wall” is built to help them stay away from the unpleasant noise outside. In this way, birdsong can be a powerful tool to improve productivity at work.
④Carrie Torn, a doctor in North Carolina has also found that birdsong makes it easier to help people enter a deep sleep. Birdsong, as a kind of white noise, can slow down people’s heartbeats and breath. After listening to birdsong for a long time, a conditioned response (条件反射) is developed in their brains. Therefore, birdsong becomes a signal of entering sleep, which helps them fall asleep faster than before and improve their sleep quality.
⑤Birdsong, a gift from nature, connects people with calmer, more natural settings and makes people feel happier and healthier. So, next time you hear a bird singing, take a moment to enjoy its beautiful melody and let it bring a little joy to your day!
27.According to Para. 2, birdsong may bring people ________.
A.strong feelings B.plenty of stress
C.outside noise D.a welcome relief
28.People who ________ might be interested in reading this passage.
A.like loud and electronic music B.have problems sleeping
C.can focus on tasks easily D.live in the countryside
29.How is the above passage organized?
A. B.
C. D.
30.We can infer from the passage that the writer is ________ towards birdsong.
A.supportive B.doubtful
C.neutral D.humorous
【答案】27.D 28.B 29.C 30.A
根据第二段“If you live in a noisy city, birdsong can be a welcome relief from the stress caused by outside noise.”

Yellow Dress
By Janet Lee
Mary had a yellow dress
Bought from the department store.
It looked as beautiful as the moon,
And as bright as the sun.
Mary wore all the time
The yellow dress I felt so right.
Every day from day to night
I saw her in the dress so bright.
“Buy me a yellow dress,”
I cried to Mom and Dad,
“As beautiful and bright
As the dress the girl living near has!”
I cried and cried and cried,
Until they said with sad eyes,
“We need food for your baby sister,
And clothes for your coming brother.”
Since then I’ve learned
Mary’s yellow dress
Is better to dream of
Than to ask for.

How do I start?
Think about what you enjoy doing or what you’d like to try. You can look for local groups and classes or see if your school is doing any new after-school activities. You don’t always have to go out to learn a new skill, though. 34 Why not get a book from the library about your chosen skill or even look online with an adult, for tips on how to master something new?
A.What is a new skill?
B.There are things you can do at home.
C. When do I try a new skill?

Yellow Dress
By Janet Lee
Mary had a yellow dress
Bought from the department store.
It looked as beautiful as the moon,
And as bright as the sun.
Mary wore all the time
The yellow dress I felt so right.
Every day from day to night
I saw her in the dress so bright.
“Buy me a yellow dress,”
I cried to Mom and Dad,
“As beautiful and bright
As the dress the girl living near has!”
I cried and cried and cried,
Until they said with sad eyes,
“We need food for your baby sister,
And clothes for your coming brother.”
Since then I’ve learned
Mary’s yellow dress
Is better to dream of
Than to ask for.
