The man behind the counter looked fat and well-fed. He reached behind him for the chocolate bar, and handed it to Charlie. Charlie 2 tore (撕) off the wrapper and couldn’t wait to take a huge bite. Imagine a scene in a movie: A young girl on her own in a dark building climbs a creaky staircase (楼梯). Shadows flicker (摇曳) like ghosts on the wall behind her. If you were the movie director, what music would you choose to go with this scene?
Now think about the music you would use for this scene: A lost dog is returned to his owner a little boy. The boy starts to cry with happiness.
Would you choose the same piece of music for both scenes? Probably not, because different types of music, show different types of emotions. What works for a lost dog story would seem silly for a scary move.
Music Can Change Your Heart Rate (心率)
Emotions are more than just something we feel they have an influence on the body too. Studies have shown that listening to music changes our heart rate, our breathing and even our body temperature. For example, dance music beats increase our heart rate. No wonder people listen to fast music to exercise and slow songs to relax. But even more important than what’s happening to the body is what’s happening in the brain.
Expectations Create an Emotional Response (反应)
Just as babies learn to speak the language of their parents, they also learn the “grammar” of the songs around them: which notes sound “right”, how melodies (旋律) rise and fall, and the way rhythms should be constructed (构成). Songwriters use this understanding to make you feel emotions when you hear their music.
Dr Alexandra Lamont is an expert in music psychology, the study of how people understand and reply to music. Lamont says that it is people’s expectations about music that create an emotional response.
“It has something to do with where we think the music is going next and whether it goes where we expect it to or not like when a beat finally gets dropped after a lot of build-ups,” Lamont says.
The Best Rock Stars Make Us Feel Their Emotions
The musical performance is key too. When the best rock stars perform, we can feel their pain, sadness and joy. A part of our brain tries to echo the emotions we see in others. We feel empathy, meaning we share their feelings. Many psychologists believe this same part of the brain is active when we watch musicians perform. One experiment showed that even with the sound turned down, people could exactly tell the emotion a performer wanted to express just by watching his or her body movements. Research has shown that more than 50 per cent of all communication is nonverbal (非语言的), or unspoken. The best rock stars know this. They express the emotion of a song with their bodies too.
14.Which is the closest meaning of the underlined word “echo” in the last paragraph?
A.Show the same emotion. B.Give back the feeling.
C.Remember the music. D.Forget the sad part.
15.The writer writes the first three paragraphs probably to ________.
A.show how music is made by creating dramatic scenes
B.point out that different types of music express different types of emotion
C.show music is used widely in movies
D.tell us that music is quite important in movies
16.According to the article, the readers can infer that ________.
A.when people relax or sleep, it is better to listen to heavy metal music
B.listening to fast music is not suitable when you exercise
C.music not only changes our heart rate and breathing, but also influences our brain
D.babies begin to learn grammar from listening to songs
17.Which fails to explain why some best rock stars use body languages in their performances?
A.Studies have found more than 50 per cent of all communication is nonverbal.
B.People can understand the emotion of a performer by watching his or her body movements.
C.Body languages can describe one’s emotions too.
D.Music is the most important way to express one’s feeling to the world.

Laurie had just come home from school when she heard a light hammering (敲击) sound coming from Grandpa’s study. Curious, she tapped on the door. “Grandpa? Can I come in?”
“Just a second!” Grandpa answered. Laurie heard lots of shuffling (拖着脚走). “Enter!”
Grandpa was sitting empty-handed at his desk, but there were wood shavings (刨花) everywhere. “Aren’t you supposed to be at school?” he asked.
“It’s over at three. What were you doing here?” Laurie said curiously. She saw something wooden underneath a book. “Aha!” she cried, pulling the object out. “What’s this?”
“Well, that’s your birthday gift. But now it won’t be a surprise,” Grandpa said.
It was a wooden crocodile (鳄鱼) with a string (线) on the top of its head so the mouth could be opened and shut.
“It’s an ancient Egyptian (埃及的) toy,” Grandpa said. “I made this, but if you were a child in ancient Egypt, you might have something similar. Crocodiles were an important part of Egyptian life, and many crocodiles lived in the Nile River.”
“The Egyptians depended on the Nile River for many things. It flooded every year, giving much-needed water and nutrients (营养物) to the land. This made farming easy for the Egyptians. The soft, wet land also made good mud (土) for building mud-brick houses.”
“And the river provided the people of the area with a convenient highway for transportation and communication.”
“Ancient Egypt was an agricultural society. If you were a little Egyptian girl living about four thousand years ago, your father would probably be a grain farmer. Grains were the most common crop, especially wheat and barley, which were used to make bread and beer—the most typical food and drink.”
“Unluckily, children didn’t go to school like you do now. You’d probably spend most days helping your parents. During the harvest season maybe you would bundle (捆扎) wheat up on the farm. Or perhaps you’d be at home, helping to cook or take care of the vegetable garden near your house.”
Just then, Mom called from downstairs, “Laurie! I’m home!”
“Hi, Mom! I’ll be right down!” Laurie said. “Thanks, Grandpa. I’ll pretend (假装) I never saw this,” she said, putting the crocodile back on the desk. “Until next time!”
“Until next time! Bye, Laurie!”

If you’ve ever watched a pet dog getting up from its bed and spreading out, with its front paws on the floor and its tail pointing up in the air, you’ll know where the downward-facing dog pose gets its name. You’ll have noticed that many other well-known yoga poses take their names from animals too. But just why is it that so many poses are based on animals, insects, and even birds?
To understand where these poses came from you have to think like an ancient yogi. The practice of yoga started many thousands of years ago. There were no cars, computers, high-rise buildings, or playgrounds, so instead people looked to the natural world for inspiration (灵感).
Dawattie Basdeo teaches yoga to children and young people. She explains, “Ancient yogis sat in nature and watched the world around them. They would have been watching the way that animals moved and thinking about copying those shapes. Yoga is about understanding how the world works and your place within it through movement and meditation (冥想).”
Young children are flexible (柔韧的). But as humans grow up, they spend more time sitting at desks or travelling in cars, and their flexibility decreases. Animals don’t have this problem—in fact, they often depend on their bodies and their ability to move to survive.
Dawattie says, “Thinking about animal forms and shapes can make the different yoga poses easy to understand and remember. When you think of the way a dog spreads out, you can easily picture what a downward-facing dog pose might look like. ①A clear picture will come to your mind.”
Yoga is also a spiritual practice, where you think about improving your self-awareness as you move, hold positions, pay attention to your breathing, and meditate.②
Some breathing exercises practised in yoga also take inspiration from nature, such as Bhramari Pranayama—or bee breathing—where the breath sounds like the buzzing of a bumblebee.③
Along with taking inspiration from the living beings around them, the ancient yogis were also inspired by the landscapes of the natural world. ④There are postures that mirror the calmness of a mountain or the strength and balance of a tall tree.
“Humans think of themselves as being at the top of the species ladder,” says Dawattie. “But we can gain so much from the other animals on the planet.”
22.What can we learn about yoga from the passage?
A.Yoga was first created for modern stress. B.Yoga suits someone with good flexibility.
C.Yoga makes humans as strong as animals. D.Yoga connects humans to the natural world.
23.The following sentence can be best placed at ________.
When you pose like a powerful lion, you might think about its strengths and characteristics.
A.① B.② C.③ D.④
24.Why is “mountain” pose mentioned in the passage?
A.To show yoga is about more than animals. B.To teach how to stand like a mountain.
C.To prove yoga is just for nature lovers. D.To explain what to do with the breath.
25.How does the writer share information in the passage?
A.By giving facts and examples. B.By listing historical events.
C.By sharing experiences and opinions. D.By comparing different animals.

There’s a story about the California Gold Rush (淘金热) that tells of two brothers who sold all they had and went to look for gold. They discovered a vein (矿脉) of gold, bought it and got down to the serious business of getting the gold out of the mine (矿). All they hoped was to make lots of money and change their lives.
All went well at first, but then a strange thing happened. The vein of gold disappeared! They tried hard but they couldn’t find any gold.
Finally, they gave up sadly. They sold their tools and rights to dig the mine for a few hundred dollars, and took the train back home. Later a man named Tim who bought the gold mine ordered an engineer to examine (查) the mine carefully. The engineer advised him to continue digging in the same place where the two brothers had left off. To his surprise, the new owner found gold at three feet deeper of the same place. With a little more patience, the two brothers would have been millionaires themselves.
It is also true for us. Sometimes we can’t make it just because we are not patient enough. As a result, even though we are so close to success, we just miss the opportunity. Do you need to dig three feet farther in your life?
54.Why did the two brothers sell all they had and go to look for gold?

55.How did the new owner find the gold finally?
56.When you can’t see any hope, will you give up or keep trying? Why?
【答案】54.Because they wanted to make lots of money and change their lives. 55.By continuing digging in the same place where the two brothers had left off. 56.I will keep trying. Because it is believed that to persevere means victory and that the moment before dawn is the darkest. I am sure if we are patient, we will be successful.
54.根据“All they hoped was to make lots of money and change their lives.”可知,他们所做的一切,就是想赚更多的钱改变生活。故填Because they wanted to make lots of money and change their lives.
55.根据“The engineer advised him to continue digging in the same place where the two brothers had left off. To his surprise, the new owner found gold at three feet deeper of the same place.”可知,新主人是沿着两兄弟原来的方向挖掘而发现了金子,故填By continuing digging in the same place where the two brothers had left off.
56.开放性试题,答案言之有理即可。故参考答案为I will keep trying. Because it is believed that to persevere means victory and that the moment before dawn is the darkest. I am sure if we are patient, we will be successful.

The man behind the counter looked fat and well-fed. He reached behind him for the chocolate bar, and handed it to Charlie. Charlie 2 tore (撕) off the wrapper and couldn’t wait to take a huge bite. Then he took another...and another...an oh, the joy of being able to eat large pieces of something sweet and solid into one’s mouth!
“You look like you wanted that one, sonny,” the shopkeeper said 3 .
Charlie nodded, with his mouth full of chocolate.
The shopkeeper put Charlie’s 4 on the counter. “Take it easy,” he said. “It’ll give you stomachache if you eat it like that without chewing.”
Charlie went on with the chocolate. And in less than half a minute, the whole thing had 5 down his throat. He was quite out of breath, 6 he felt extraordinarily happy. He reached out to take the change but stopped.

“Why not?” the fat shopkeeper said, reaching 8 him again and taking another Whipple-Scrumptious Fudgemallow Delight from the shelf. He laid it on the counter.
Charlie 9 it up and tore off the wrapper...and suddenly...from under the wrapper....there came the brilliant flash of gold.
