The put-together bones of a Stegosaurus (剑龙) named Apex went on display at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) in New York City on December 5th. Apex is the most complete sample of a Stegosaurus and the most expensive ever sold at an auction (拍卖会).
How did the museum get Apex?
Apex is on loan to AMNH for four years from Kenneth C. Griffin. In July, Griffin, the leader of an investment firm, purchased Apex at an auction at Sotheby’s in New York City for a record $44.6 million. Griffin lent Apex to AMNH so it could be seen and studied.
Why is Apex valuable?
It includes about 80% of the dinosaur’s 320 bones. When Apex was alive 150 million years ago, the animal stood 11 feet tall and was 27 feet long. Scientists can tell from Apex’s remains that it lived a long life, which is why they are excited to study them. Scientists hope to gain a better understanding of the species’ metabolism (代谢) and bone growth.
How did people react?
“We are excited to have Apex on view at the museum and grateful to Ken Griffin for his commitment to sharing this wonderful sample,” AMNH president Sean M. Decatur said.
What will happen next?
Apex will remain on display near the entrance of the museum’s Gilder Center until fall 2025. At that time, it will be moved to the fourth floor for the rest of the loan period. The museum said it will also create an exact copy of Apex to go on display after Griffin’s loan ends.
1. Why did Griffin lend Apex to the museum?
A. He disliked Apex. B. He longed to make money.
C. He enabled wider study. D. He planned to preserve it better.
2. What makes Apex most precious to scientists?
A. The unique bone structure. B. The only Stegosaurus sample.
C. Being found on a special occasion. D. Being almost complete and living long.
3. What will happen to Apex in fall 2025?
A. It will be returned to Griffin. B. It will be shown on a different floor.
C. The scientists will begin to study it. D. The museum stuff will put it in storage.

It hasn’t been this hot on Earth since before the last Ice Age. These heat waves, which seem to continue rather than being short-lived, pose a serious threat to human lives. Globally, above 356,000 people lose their lives to extreme heat each year. To safeguard lives, we need immediate relief, and trees can play a crucial role, according to experts.
Functioning as nature’s air conditioner, a single tree has the capacity to reduce temperature by as much as 10 degrees Fahrenheit. This seemingly small decrease can have a great impact on human well-being. For instance, when the temperature reaches 95 degrees Fahrenheit with 100% humidity (湿度) , the human body’s natural cooling mechanism fails, and the core temperature rises, putting lives at risk. Even in drier conditions, there is a limit to how much heat humans can bear. In cities, large amounts of roads and buildings absorb heat, creating urban heat islands. Trees can balance this by shading the ground and lowering surface temperatures.
Moreover, extreme heat gives rise to other health risks. Too high temperatures degrade air quality, increasing ground-level ozone and particulate pollution. Exposure to those conditions can worsen chronic heart and respiratory health issues, with more communities of low-income neighborhoods being affected. However, trees can help mitigate these negative impacts. Research has shown that children in areas with more trees have a lower infection of childhood asthma (哮喘).
The world is warming at an alarming pace. But this situation is not beyond our control. Growing forests in both urban and rural settings help establish a living barrier, designed to keep us safe. It lifts not only the burden of the heat but the burden of worry for the future. Hope is woven (编织) in the roots of trees, By planting and caring for them, we can breathe cleaner air. We can support healthier homes and save lives in every corner of the planet. We can help ensure the World’s Hottest Day doesn’t get another follow-up chapter. And it starts with a tree.
4. How do trees serve as air conditioner?
A. By generating strong winds. B. By improving the air quality.
C. By stopping the loss of earth water. D. By blocking off the heat from the sun.
5. What does the underlined word “mitigate” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Reduce. B. Notice. C. Increase. D. Create.
6. What is the author’s attitude towards the global warming?
A. Pessimistic. B. Optimistic. C. Doubtful. D. Indifferent.
7. What would be the best title for the text?
A. The Rising Threat of Extreme Heat. B. The Urgency of Forest Protection.
C. The Power of Trees in Fighting Heat. D. The Impact of Heat on Human Health.
D 5. A 6. B 7. C
根据第二段“Functioning as nature’s air conditioner, a single tree has the capacity to reduce temperature by as much as 10 degrees Fahrenheit. This seemingly small decrease can have a great impact on human well-being…In cities, large amounts of roads and buildings absorb heat, creating urban heat islands. Trees can balance this by shading the ground and lowering surface temperatures. (作为大自然的空调,一棵树就能将温度降低多达10华氏度。这种看似微小的下降会对人类的福祉产生巨大影响……在城市中,大量的道路和建筑物吸收热量,形成了城市热岛。树木可以通过遮蔽地面和降低地表温度来平衡这一点。)”可知,树木通过遮蔽地面来阻挡太阳的热量,从而降低温度,充当空调。故选D。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据上文“Moreover, extreme heat gives rise to other health risks. Too high temperatures degrade air quality, increasing ground-level ozone and particulate pollution. Exposure to those conditions can worsen chronic heart and respiratory health issues, with more communities of low-income neighborhoods being affected. (此外,极端高温还会带来其他健康风险。过高的温度会降低空气质量,增加地面臭氧和颗粒物污染。暴露在这些条件下会加重慢性心脏和呼吸系统健康问题,更多的低收入社区受到影响。)”可知,这里描述的是极端高温带来的负面影响,所以下文提到的树木的作用应该是减少这些负面影响,所以“mitigate”的意思是“减少”。故选A。
根据最后一段“The world is warming at an alarming pace. But this situation is not beyond our control. Growing forests in both urban and rural settings help establish a living barrier, designed to keep us safe. It lifts not only the burden of the heat but the burden of worry for the future. Hope is woven in the roots of trees. By planting and caring for them, we can breathe cleaner air. We can support healthier homes and save lives in every corner of the planet. We can help ensure the World’s Hottest Day doesn’t get another follow-up chapter. And it starts with a tree.
根据第一段“To safeguard lives, we need immediate relief, and trees can play a crucial role, according to experts. (为了保护生命,我们需要立即采取缓解措施,而树木可以发挥至关重要的作用。)”和下文内容可知,文章主要讲述了树木在抗击高温方面的重要作用,由此可知,选项C“树木在抗击高温方面的力量”适合作为本文的标题。故选C。

Lizzi Wolf’s Meager Mercies is a deeply moving and painful novel, based on the true story of an eight-year-old boy who underwent nine months of prison alone. It’s an exploration of recovery ability facing unimaginable hurt and a criticism of a justice system that fails to protect its most defenseless.
The story centers on a child whose innocence is taken away by the unforgiving reality of his situation. Wolf does a remarkable job of presenting a boy’s perspective (视角), picturing his confusion, fear, and longing. His internal world is as vivid as his physical reality, which makes the novel so affecting. Wolf never overstates his difficulty, nor does she reduce the depth of his suffering. Instead, she strikes a delicate balance, allowing the boy’s voice to speak for itself.
The title, Meager Mercies, is suitable and of deep significance. During the boy’s cruel prison, small moments of kindness — a smile from a guard, a comforting memory, a rare sound of life outside his cell — become lifelines. These moments are presented with delicate tenderness, providing a sharp contrast. They remind us of the great power of even the smallest acts of humanity in the face of cruelty. They also serve to highlight the systemic failure that has placed a child in such a desperate situation in the first place.
A unique feature of the novel is the inclusion of illustrations, reflecting the raw emotions of a child’s viewpoint. These illustrations make the story even more heart-breaking as they remind readers of the boy’s innocence and age, emphasizing the sadness of his story. The pictures allow us to step even closer into his experience, making the injustice of his suffering all the more heartfelt.
Wolf’s work is both reserved and emotional, perfectly reflecting the cruelty of the boy’s prison. She uses language economically, mirroring the dullness and emptiness of his existence, but her words carry huge emotional weight. The illustrations work together with the writing, making this a truly multi-layered story that rings long after the final page.
8. What is the main purpose of Lizzi Wolf’s novel?
A. To tell an adventurous story of a boy’s survival.
B. To analyze the psychological theories of recovery.
C. To promote social awareness through illustrations.
D. To criticize the justice system for failing weak groups.
9. How does Wolf describe the boy’s experience in the novel?
A. By focusing on physical hardships. B. By balancing his voice with realities.
C. By avoiding descriptions of his emotions. D. By overstating his efforts to make a living.
10. Why is the title “Meager Mercies” meaningful?
A. It praises the artistic value of the book.
B. It shows the legal system’s attempt to play fair.
C. It contrasts small kindness with systemic cruelty.
D. It emphasizes the boy’s great willpower during isolation.
11. What role do the illustrations play in the novel?
A. They criticize the justice system directly. B. They simplify the complex plot for readers.
C. They provide historical context for the story. D. They show the boy’s innocence and perspective.
D 9. B 10. C 11. D
根据第一段“It’s an exploration of recovery ability facing unimaginable hurt and a criticism of a justice system that fails to protect its most defenseless.(这是对在面临难以想象的伤害时的恢复能力的一种探索,同时也是对未能保护最无助群体的司法系统的一种批判)”可知,小说的主要目的是批评未能保护弱势群体的司法系统。
根据第二段“Wolf does a remarkable job of presenting a boy’s perspective (视角), picturing his confusion, fear, and longing. His internal world is as vivid as his physical reality, which makes the novel so affecting. Wolf never overstates his difficulty, nor does she reduce the depth of his suffering. Instead, she strikes a delicate balance, allowing the boy’s voice to speak for itself.(Wolf出色地展现了一个男孩的视角,描绘出他的困惑、恐惧与渴望。他的内心世界和他所处的现实世界一样生动鲜活,这使得这部小说极具感染力。沃尔夫既没有夸大他所面临的困难,也没有淡化他所遭受痛苦的程度。相反,她巧妙地把握了平衡,让这个男孩的心声能够自然地流露出来)”可推知,Wolf通过平衡男孩的声音和现实来描述他的经历。故选B。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“During the boy’s cruel prison, small moments of kindness — a smile from a guard, a comforting memory, a rare sound of life outside his cell — become lifelines. These moments are presented with delicate tenderness, providing a sharp contrast. They remind us of the great power of even the smallest acts of humanity in the face of cruelty. They also serve to highlight the systemic failure that has placed a child in such a desperate situation in the first place.(在男孩残酷的牢狱生活中,一些小小的善意时刻——狱警的一个微笑、一段安慰的记忆、牢房外难得的生命之声——都成了他的生命线。这些时刻被以细腻的温柔呈现出来,形成了鲜明的对比。它们提醒我们,即使是最微小的人性行为,在面对残酷时也具有巨大的力量。它们也突出了最初将一个孩子置于如此绝望境地的系统性失败)”可知,标题“Meager Mercies”的意义在于将微小的善意与系统的残酷形成对比。故选C。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“A unique feature of the novel is the inclusion of illustrations, reflecting the raw emotions of a child’s viewpoint. These illustrations make the story even more heart-breaking as they remind readers of the boy’s innocence and age, emphasizing the sadness of his story.(这部小说的一个独特之处在于它包含了插图,这些插图反映了一个孩子视角的原始情感。这些插图让故事更加令人心碎,因为它们提醒读者男孩的纯真和年龄,强调了他故事的悲伤)”可知,插图在小说中展示了男孩的纯真和视角。故选D。

A study published in the Journal of Hospitality Marketing & Management found that describing a product as using AI lowers a customer’s intention to buy it.
Researchers sampled participants across various age groups and showed them the same products — the only difference between them: One was described as “high tech” and the other as using AI. “In every single case, the intention to buy or use the product or service was greatly lower whenever we mentioned AI in the product description,” said Dogan Gursoy, one of the study’s authors.
The study says two kinds of trust play a part in consumers’ less-than-rosy perception of products that describe themselves as “AI-powered”. The first kind, cognitive (认知的) trust, has to do with the higher standard that people hold AI to as a machine they expect to be free from human error. So, when AI does slip up, that trust can be quickly ruined. For example, people criticized Google last year for providing confusing and even false information, pressuring the company to walk back some of the features’ capabilities.
In addition, limited knowledge and understanding about the inner workings of AI forces consumers to fall back on emotional trust and make their own subjective judgments about the technology. “One of the reasons is fear of the unknown,” Gursoy said. “Before ChatGPT was introduced, not many people had any ideas about AI.” And the way AI is presented in pop culture, like Hollywood science fiction films where robots appear as villains (反派主角) has a bigger impact on shaping public perception towards AI, Another is the perceived risk around AI - particularly with how it handles users’ personal data, according to Gursoy.
Therefore, Gursoy warns companies against adding the “AI” label as an appealing word without details on its capabilities. “The most advisable thing for them to do is to come up with the right messaging,” he said. “Rather than simply putting ‘AI-powered’ or ‘run by AI’, telling people how this can help them will ease consumers’ fear.”
12. What discovery was made by the study?
A. Consumers prefer non-AI products. B. High-tech products are less popular.
C. AI-described products attract fewer customers. D. AI-labeled products sell better with high-tech ones.
13. Why does cognitive trust in AI break down easily?
A. AI often fails basic tasks. B. People think AI is less efficient.
C AI is too complex to understand. D. People expect perfection from AI.
14. What affects consumers’ emotional trust in AI?
A. High service prices. B. Limited product functions.
C. Slow technology development. D. Insufficient AI operation knowledge.
15. What are companies advised to do?
A. Explain the benefits from AI. B. Keep away from AI usage.
C. Detail the production process. D. Simplify “AI-powered” labels.
C 13. D 14. D 15. A
根据第一段“A study published in the Journal of Hospitality Marketing & Management found that describing a product as using AI lowers a customer’s intention to buy it.(发表在《酒店营销与管理杂志》上的一项研究发现,将产品描述为使用人工智能会降低顾客的购买意愿)”可知,这项研究发现描述为人工智能的产品吸引的顾客更少。
根据第三段“The first kind, cognitive (认知的) trust, has to do with the higher standard that people hold AI to as a machine they expect to be free from human error. So, when AI does slip up, that trust can be quickly ruined.(第一种是认知信任,这与人们对人工智能作为一台机器所持有的更高标准有关,他们期望这台机器不会出现人为错误。因此,当人工智能真的出现失误时,这种信任很快就会被破坏)”可推知,人们对人工智能的认知信任容易破裂是因为人们对人工智能的期望很高。故选D。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“In addition, limited knowledge and understanding about the inner workings of AI forces consumers to fall back on emotional trust and make their own subjective judgments about the technology.(此外,由于对人工智能内部运作的了解和理解有限,消费者不得不依赖情感信任,并对这项技术做出自己的主观判断)”可知,消费者对人工智能操作知识的不足影响了他们对人工智能的情感信任。
根据最后一段“Therefore, Gursoy warns companies against adding the “AI” label as an appealing word without details on its capabilities. “The most advisable thing for them to do is to come up with the right messaging,” he said. “Rather than simply putting ‘AI-powered’ or ‘run by AI’, telling people how this can help them will ease consumers’ fear.”(因此,Gursoy警告企业不要在没有详细说明人工智能能力的情况下,将“人工智能”标签作为一个吸引人的词来使用。“他们最明智的做法是提出正确的信息,”他说,“与其简单地写上‘人工智能驱动’或‘由人工智能运行’,不如告诉人们这如何能帮助他们,这样可以缓解消费者的恐惧”)”可知,企业被建议解释人工智能带来的好处。故选A。
Just because our plant friends live inside with us doesn’t mean that they have forgotten what it is to be a plant. They may not react to the seasons as dramatically as their cousins outside do. ____16____ So if you are mad about an unhappy plant in winter, take it easy! Here are four important things to get your green babies to spring.
Water less frequently. Since plants are considerably less active during the winter months, they do not need as much water. Root-ruining overwatering is one of the most common causes of death for indoor plants. This doesn’t mean completely ignoring them, but only water when the soil is dry. ____17____
Watch the humidity (湿度). Many houseplants like to live in humid environments. In winter, with heaters and fireplaces burning, a lack of humidity can be a problem. ____18____ As we know it tends to be one of the more humid places in a house. You can also increase humidity by grouping plants together to create a microclimate or use a humidifier near them.
____19____ While houseplants may love the windowsill for its light, they do not love the windowsill for its drafts and cold air. Likewise, they don’t love being near heat sources like heating pipes, radiators, and fireplaces. In a perfect houseplant world, day temperatures should range from 65 to 75 degrees and drop to no lower than 50 degrees at night.
Dust and tidy-up regularly. We generally think that insect problems would be more a problem in summer. But as it turns out, houseplants are more sensitive to insects in winter because they go into that state of dormancy (冬眠). ____20____ So make sure you’re wiping the leaves regularly with a damp cloth. And remove any dead or yellowing leaves with a pair of clean, sharp scissors.
A. Keep a steady temperature.
B. But they still feel the changes.
C. Put your plants in your bathroom.
D. It is normal and crucial to change the pots.
E. Insects love to hide in the dust on the plant leaves.
F. You can expect a decline in growth and even leaf drop.
G. You can test this by putting your finger 2 inches into the soil.
B 17. G 18. C 19. A 20. E
根据上文“They may not react to the seasons as dramatically as their cousins outside do.(它们可能不会像外面的同类植物那样对季节有剧烈的反应)”可知,室内植物不会像外面的同类植物那样对季节有剧烈的反应。B 选项“But they still feel the changes.(但是它们仍然能感觉到变化)”与上文构成转折关系,且能引出下文“So if you are mad about an unhappy plant in winter, take it easy!(所以如果你因为冬天植物状态不好而生气,别着急)”。故选B项。
根据上文“This doesn’t mean completely ignoring them, but only water when the soil is dry.(这并不意味着完全忽视它们,而是只有当土壤干燥时才浇水)”可知,此处讲述的是何时浇水的问题。G选项“You can test this by putting your finger 2 inches into the soil.(你可以通过把手指伸进土壤两英寸来测试这一点)”中的“test this”指代上文判断土壤是否干燥,进一步说明了如何判断土壤是否干燥。故选G项。
根据下文“As we know it tends to be one of the more humid places in a house.(正如我们所知,它往往是房子里比较潮湿的地方之一)”可知,浴室是房子里比较潮湿的地方之一。C选项“Put your plants in your bathroom.(把你的植物放在浴室里)”能引出下文对浴室潮湿的描述。故选C项。
根据下文“While houseplants may love the windowsill for its light, they do not love the windowsill for its drafts and cold air. Likewise, they don’t love being near heat sources like heating pipes, radiators, and fireplaces. In a perfect houseplant world, day temperatures should range from 65 to 75 degrees and drop to no lower than 50 degrees at night.(虽然室内植物可能喜欢窗台上的光线,但它们不喜欢窗台上的气流和冷空气。同样,它们也不喜欢靠近热源,比如暖气管、散热器和壁炉。在一个完美的室内植物世界里,白天的温度应该在65到75度之间,晚上的温度应该不低于50度)”可知,本段主要讲的是室内植物对温度的要求,A选项“Keep a steady temperature.(保持稳定的温度)”能概括本段主旨,适合作主题句。故选A项。
根据上文“But as it turns out, houseplants are more sensitive to insects in winter because they go into that state of dormancy (冬眠).( 但事实证明,室内植物在冬天对昆虫更敏感,因为它们进入了冬眠状态)”可知,室内植物在冬天对昆虫更敏感。下文“So make sure you’re wiping the leaves regularly with a damp cloth.(所以要确保你定期用湿布擦拭叶子)”提到用湿布擦拭叶子。E选项“Insects love to hide in the dust on the plant leaves.(昆虫喜欢藏在植物叶子上的灰尘里)”解释了为什么冬天要擦拭叶子,因为昆虫喜欢藏在叶子灰尘里,且与上文提到的昆虫问题相呼应。

逻辑主语it(The traditional Chinese Longtaitou Festival)与mark之间是主动关系,所以用现在分词形式作伴随状语。
故填which。
故填a。
命名”,主语other foods是复数,所以be动词用are,name的过去分词是named。故填are named。
句意:面条是龙须(long xu),饺子是龙耳(long er),春卷是龙鳞(long lin),爆米花是龙子(long zi)。根据语境可知,“Noodles are dragon’s beard (long xu), dumplings are dragon’s ears (long er), spring rolls are dragon’s scales (long lin),”与“popcorn is dragon seeds (long zi)”之间是并列关系,所以用并列连词and。故填and。

Dear David,
I’m glad to share my first Spring Festival experience after its UNESCO heritage listing!
The atmosphere was electric. Our neighborhood glowed with red lanterns, and lively dragon dances filled the streets with energy. This recognition made everyone prouder than ever to celebrate this cultural treasure. Making dumplings with three generations warmed my heart — those flour-covered hands connect past, present and future. What moved me most was seeing foreign friends learning to write the Chinese character “fu” at the community center. Their smiles showed how traditions can build bridges across cultures.
How about joining us next year? You’ll feel its magic firsthand!

My windshield wipers pushed the icy partly-melted snow across my windshield as I pulled into a parking spot at the far end of the lot. I glanced at my dashboard clock. Despite the bad weather I was only a few minutes late for work. From the look of the half-empty parking lot, however, it seemed that I was not the only one who had trouble negotiating the slippery roads.
I would have loved to remain at home a bit longer that morning nursing my cup of coffee until the road crews finished clearing the roads. But when you work in a health-care facility, you’re expected to arrive at your appointed start time regardless of circumstance. With that in mind, I turned off the engine and then carefully stepped from my car.
As I covered my eyes from the blowing snow, I spotted several night-shift staff struggling to remove the layer of ice that covered their car windows. One staff member was poking (戳) at her windshield with nothing more than a gloved hand.
Without hesitation, I reached for the ice scraper (刮雪器) I had hurriedly thrown in my tote bag. It was my favorite, made of strong royal blue plastic with an unusual hot pink stripe (条纹) down the handle. That didn’t matter- she needed it. And, as someone who lives by the Boy Scout’s motto to “be prepared”, I knew I had at least one more ice scraper in the trunk of my car.
I approached the woman and handed her the ice scraper. “Here,” I said. “Use this.”
“Why, thank you,” she answered, looking a bit taken aback and extremely grateful. “This is really helping me a lot. But how will I get it back to you?” I waved my hand. “Just keep it,” I said with a smile. “It’s going to be a long winter.” Then I left in a hurry with plenty of work to do that day and forgot about it completely.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
But then, interestingly, I saw that same ice scraper in the hands of different people several times.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
But then, interestingly, I saw that same ice scraper in the hands of different people several times. Later that week, I saw it in the hands of one of our nurses. After another particularly bitter storm, I noticed the scraper’s distinctive handle in the palm of one of our van drivers as he cleared ice from around the edges of his vehicle’s door. And, in the midst of an unexpected spring snow, I found a sturdy royal blue ice scraper with an unusual hot pink pattern down the handle sticking out of the tote bag of one of our administrative assistants.
I couldn’t hold up my curiosity this time. “Where did you get that cool-looking ice scraper?” I remarked. “Someone lent it to me last night since I’d left mine at home.” I took a close look at the royal blue plastic. It looked a bit worn but still useful. I don’t know how many grateful sets of hands that tool has traveled through since I first let it go that one cold winter morning, but I certainly never imagined the series of kindness created by my one small act, which warmed the cold winter.

2 What makes Apex most precious to scientists?
A. The unique bone structure. B. The only Stegosaurus sample.
C. Being found on a special occasion. D. Being almost complete and living long.
3. What will happen to Apex in fall 2025?
A It will be returned to Griffin. B. It will be shown on a different floor.
C. The scientists will begin to study it. D. The museum stuff will put it in storage.
B
A. Reduce. B. Notice. C. Increase. D. Create.

D
C. AI is too complex to understand. D. People expect perfection from AI.
14. What affects consumers’ emotional trust in AI?
A. High service prices. B. Limited product functions.
C. Slow technology development. D. Insufficient AI operation knowledge.
15. What are companies advised to do?
A. Explain the benefits from AI. B. Keep away from AI usage.
C. Detail the production process. D. Simplify “AI-powered” labels.

My windshield wipers pushed the icy partly-melted snow across my windshield as I pulled into a parking spot at the far end of the lot. I glanced at my dashboard clock. Despite the bad weather, I was only a few minutes late for work. From the look of the half-empty parking lot, however, it seemed that I was not the only one who had trouble negotiating the slippery roads.
I would have loved to remain at home a bit longer that morning, nursing my cup of coffee until the road crews finished clearing the roads.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
But then, interestingly, I saw that same ice scraper in the hands of different people several times.
