Because most americans get their news from mainstream media, the media used to decide which news to report and how to report. The leather jacket is age-won and soft. I found it banging in the window of a shop in Brighton, England. I was there to deliver a talk on modem women’s writing at an international conference, a PhD student eager to make a name for herself and waiting for her life to start. I had just turned 28.
I’m still closely connected to that woman, her dreams and her ambition (雄心), although she also frightens me. She was always quite determined, this leather jacket woman — she had a five-year plan and was sticking to it! This was the woman who couldn’t find time to visit her grandmother, who regularly missed her nieces’ and nephews’ birthday parties, and who left and didn’t look back.
She and I are one and the same, but we are also very different. There was a change that happened a few years into the five-year plan. Each time one goal post was reached, another took its place. This is the pattern of the overly ambitious. I started to doubt whether it would result in any real success other than an unwavering (坚定不移的) ability to give up everything else along the way. My determination wavered. I realized I didn’t want the same things anymore. The jacket moved to the back of the wardrobe (衣橱).
Seven years later, as I stand in front of my wardrobe filled with useless clothes, I don’t know what to do with the jacket. When England’s cold spread to my bones years earlier, the jacket had felt like a practical thing I bought. Here in Australia’s sunshine, it always felt a little silly. I let it fall heavily on the bed alongside the other clothes I’ve decided to give away because they no longer make the cut.
Yet, despite its uselessness and how much space it takes up, at the last moment I return the leather jacket to the wardrobe. I think it will always stand for a part of myself that I’m not quite willing to give up forever — that ambitious, motivated woman.
24. Why did the author go to Brighton?
A. To give a public lecture. B. To go window shopping.
C. To study as a PhD student. D. To start her new life.
25. What does the author mainly tell us in paragraph 2?
A. Her taste in clothing. B. Her original dreams.
C. Her character in her late 20. D. Her family relationships.
26. What happened to the author in paragraph 3?
A. She was proud of her success. B. She started losing ambition.
C. She cared less about dressing. D. She seldom doubted her plan.
27. Why did the author keep the jacket?
A. To encourage other women. B. To treasure her real self.
C. To help her keep warm. D. To help her set goals.
C
It is not uncommon for people to say they have no sense of direction. The sense of direction represents the ability to find one’s way. In other words, it is about getting from point A to point B without a hitch. The journey begins with determining the initial position using landmarks in the environment. It’s really about choosing a route and following it. It is also a question of testing that this same route is the correct one, with the mental representation of space or the help of tools such as maps. Finally, the ability to identify the point of arrival is obviously very important.
In a study published in 2009, scientist Giuseppe Iaria, a scientist of the University of Calgary (Canada), who specialized cognitive neutral(认知神经) networks indicated that people lacking a sense of direction have a special condition: Develop mental Topographical Disorientation(DTD).
The sense of direction required large neutral networks for proper functioning, according to the expert. However, the fact is that a majority of people are unable to put a map in their head while on the move. In her book Mind in Motion(2019), Professor Emeritus of Psychology at St an ford University(USA)Barbara Tversky explains how most people do it.
She introduced a combination of methods. It’s a mix of turn-by-turn directions, bird’s-eye views and general information in the form of maps. However, it should be noted that most medium-complexity navigation(导航) directions depend in part on the ability of people to understand the perspective of a map. In other words, people without a sense of direction follow a route in pieces. Thus, they have no expanded understanding for space and navigate their environment without any mental map of their destinations.
However, there is a solution, namely to guide the person through a series of short routed.
28. What does the underlined phrase “without a hitch” in paragraph I mean?
A. With ease. B. By oneself.
C. At ease. D. Without reflection.
29. What is the cause of going short of a sense of direction?
A Being unable to put a map at hand. B. Expanded understanding for space.
C. Lack of guiding through short routed. D. Neutral networks’ improper functioning.
30. What could be a challenge for someone without a sense of direction?
A. Reading a map. B. Forming a map in mind.
C. Following a route in pieces. D. Finishing a series of short routed.
31. What can be inferred from the text?
A. Mental map contributes to the sense of direction.
B. Having no sense of direction is merely an excuse.
C. Most people have long routed in their mind.
D. People with a sense of direction don’t need a map.
D
A biography of Caminada written by Angela Buckley reveals a series of striking similarities between him and the fictional character, in terms of their unusual methods and character.
The son of an Italian father and Irish mother, Caminada was based in Manchester, but was involved in cases which took him across the country. Most of his career was spent with Manchester City Police Force although he later operated, like Holmes, as a “consulting detective”. He became well-known in the mid-1880s, shortly before Sherlock Holmes made his first appearance in A Study in Scarlet and parallels soon emerged between the two.
As the fictional character relied on a network of underworld contacts the Baker Street Irregulars — so Caminada was known for his extensive web of informers, whom he would often meet in the back seat of a church.
These characters helped him build up an encyclopedic knowledge of the criminal fraternity (兄弟会), among whom he would often move in disguise another method in common with Holmes.
His skill with disguises was so renowned that on one occasion his own chief police officer was unable to recognize him.
Mrs. Buckley identifies Caminada’s “Moriaty” figure as Bob Horridge, a violent, intelligent career criminal, with whom he had a 20-year fight, which began when Caminada arrested him for stealing a watch, landing him with a sentence of seven years’ penal servitude because of his previous crimes. This harsh sentence for a relatively small crime angered Horridge so much that he swore revenge (报复) on the detective. His good luck finally ended after he shot two police officers. Caminada tracked him to Liverpool where the detective, disguised once more, eventually arrested him.
Caminada’s “Irene Adler” was Alicia Ormonde, an apparently well-educated woman with a noble background and expensive tastes, who was actually an experienced criminal wanted for frauds and thefts. Caminada tracked her down and arrested her, but in an echo of Holmes’ fascination with Adler the detective apparently became attracted by her. The case took place in 1890, a year before Adler appeared in A Scandal in Bohemia.
Other individuals have previously been put forward as the basis for Holmes. However, Mrs. Buckley, whose book is called The Real Sherlock Holmes, believes that Caminada was used to give Holmes a better grounding in actual casework among the criminal fraternity inspiring his detecting styles and some of the puzzling cases he encountered.
32. What do we know about Caminada from the passage?
A. He was the only basis for Holmes B. He had a mixed knowledge of crimes.
C. He died after the last Holmes book was set D. He had a whole life career as a “consulting detective”.
33. Which of the following CANNOT prove that Caminada was the basis for Holmes?
A. Caminada became a national figure shortly before Holmes’ first appearance.
B. Caminada was known for his extensive web of informers in the Baker Street.
C. Caminada had a Moriaty-like enemy for a long period of time.
D. Caminada often changed his appearances to look into cases
34. What can we infer from paragraph 6 and 7?
A. Caminada arrested the two criminals in disguise.
B. Caminada tracked both of the two criminals for years
C. Caminada fell in love with Alicia Ormonde in the case
D. Both Horridge and Ormonde took revenge on Caminada.
35. What is the most suitable title of the passage?
A. Clues to a real Holmes B. Caminada and his legend
C. Wisdom of a detective D. Detecting styles of Sherlock Holmes
第二节 (共5题;每小题2.5分,满分 12.5分)
During puberty (青春期), your body goes through many changes, and you start forming a body image — how you see, think, and feel about your body’s size, shape, and weight, or specific features like your nose. ____36____ For instance, you may believe your nose is too big or too small, even though it looks perfectly normal.
____37____ One major influence is peer (同龄人) pressure. Your friends might make casual jokes about your appearance, or you might compare yourself to them and feel they look better. Such experiences can harm the way you view yourself. Another powerful influence is the media, which often promotes a narrow, ideal body type. For example, if fair skin is portrayed as beautiful, you may feel insecure if you don’t match that ideal.
Developing a negative body image can lead to unhealthy behaviors, such as extreme dieting, overexercising, or even risky plastic surgeries. ___38___ When you focus too much on appearance, you may forget to appreciate other great things about yourself, such as your talents and personality.

Rather than focusing on appearances, value people for their true selves. By surrounding yourself with positive influences and avoiding comments on looks, you can redirect your attention from self-criticism. ____40____ Over time, you’ll build inner confidence and develop a healthier, more accepting relationship with your body.

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整短文。
The old workshop door creaked open. Clara walked in quietly. Her shoes stepped on wood shavings (刨花) that sparkled in the sunlight. Through the dusty windows, the morning light shone on Grandfather’s rough hands. He was gluing a maple chair leg.
The wall calendar still showed January. Its yellowed pages were curling just like dry leaves. An open order book lay on the desk. February’s page was empty. There had been no new orders since mid-January. Clara held her breath and recorded Grandfather with her phone. She focused on his quick hands as he measured angles with a metal ruler. “This might help him,” she thought, eager to show how skilled he was.
However, when she posted the video online, negative comments flooded in. “Old ways for a dying business!” “No wonder the business is failing!” Saddened, Clara deleted the video quickly. A spider crawled over the empty order book. Its blank pages showed not many people wanted handmade things these days.
“Want to see my treasure?” Grandpa’ s voice broke the silence. He opened a leather album filled with pencil sketches (草图) like library chairs from 1958 and park benches from 1962. A faded photo slipped out: a smiling boy missing two teeth was grinning at the camera, holding a curved (弯曲的) spoon proudly.
“Timmy, my former student,” Grandfather smiled, touching the curve of the spoon in the photo. “Now he designs furniture for tall buildings. Last month’s newspaper had an article about his curved stairs. It was inspired by this very spoon.” He tapped the photo, adding, “Machines make things fast, but hands remember stories.”
Clara looked at the photo — the curved spoon, Timmy’s smile, and Grandpa’s young handwriting on the back: Timmy’s first repair, age 7. Beside her, fresh wood shavings were shining. “Stories must be told,” Clara murmured, taking out her phone again. This time, she aimed to share not just the work, but the story behind it.

W: You should read the newspaper when you can, so you can talk about current events. And if you want to learn more about how people talk, you should try watching a popular sitcom.

M: I’ve done that already. It was one of the first things I did when I got here.

【答案】13. A 14. C 15. A 16. A
【解析】
【原文】M: Do you remember the first time you saw the ocean? I was a small child, and I’ve loved the sea ever since.
W: Have you ever seen a blue whale?
M: Yes, I saw them a lot when I was a teenager.
W: I bet that was lovely.
M: It was. But recently, I’ve mostly just seen trash on the ocean surface. You might think of the sea as being clean, but 8 million tons of plastic is put into the ocean every year.
W: I put my plastic in the recycle bin. Doesn’t that take care of it?
M: Only a very small amount of the plastic we use is recycled. It depends on the price of oil, and when oil is cheap, it’s not worth recycling plastic. And not every kind of plastic can be recycled.
W: But plastic doesn’t break down naturally.
M: It’s even worse on land. Communities are built on lands where large amounts of waste material are buried underneath.
W: But what can we do if nobody recycles plastic?
M: Well, the change has to start with people. Look at what you buy in the grocery store. Do you buy anything that is wrapped in plastic?
W: Yeah.
M: So, you could start bringing your own containers to the store.

A. The government is more careful.
B. Citizens are watching more channels.
C. People disagree on what the facts are.
【答案】17. A 18. B 19. A 20. C
【解析】
【原文】The media has always played an important role in American society because most Americans get their news from mainstream media. The media used to decide which news to report and how to report it. It has always served as a bridge, communicating the government’s messages to the public. This keeps the government from having unlimited power, and it lets the people participate in important decision. Most importantly, the news must be reported truthfully because the public needs the information to make the right choices when they vote. These days, politicians complain that the media does not report everything truthfully, and they think the media sometimes chooses stories based on their own opinions. Many people now do not trust all the major news sources. Often, different television channels give different versions of the same story. Some people choose to watch only one channel. Other people choose what news to read on the internet. This has caused problems in recent history, because the public no longer agrees what the facts are. New terms like “fake news” are now common vocabulary. With the Internet and social media, people have more choices about where to receive information. With the many choices people have for new sources, the media has a very heavy responsibility. They must provide the right information, and their reporting should help the public know what the government is doing.

A. Being unable to put a map at hand.
【答案】28. A 29. D 30. B 31. A

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了什么是方向感以及缺乏方向感的原因及解决方法。
【28题详解】
词句猜测题。根据上文“The sense of direction represents the ability to find one’s way.”(方向感代表了一个人找到路的能力)和画线短语所在句子“In other words, it is about getting from point A to point B without a hitch.”
根据第三段中“The sense of direction required large neutral networks for proper functioning, according to the expert.”(这位专家表示,方向感需要巨大认知神经网络才能正常运行。)可知,缺乏方向感是因为神经网络的功能异常,故选D项。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“In a study published in 2009, scientist Giuseppe Iaria, a scientist of the University of Calgary (Canada), who specialized cognitive neutral(认知神经) networks indicated that people lacking a sense of direction have a special condition: Develop mental Topographical Disorientation(DTD).”(在2009年发表的一项研究中,加拿大卡尔加里大学的科学家约瑟夫艾里亚专门研究了认知神经网络,他表示,缺乏方向感的人有一个特殊的条件:发展心理地图障碍)可知,没有方向感的人,对于在大脑中形成地图是一种挑战,故选B项。

【答案】32. B 33. B 34. C 35. A

根据第四段“These characters helped him build up an encyclopedic knowledge of the criminal fraternity (兄弟会), among whom he would often move in disguise another method in common with Holmes. (这些角色帮助他建立了对犯罪团伙的百科全书式的了解,他经常在犯罪团伙中乔装打扮,这是他和福尔摩斯的另一个共同点。)”可知,卡米纳达对犯罪的了解好坏参半。故选B。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“As the fictional character relied on a network of underworld contacts the Baker Street Irregulars — so Caminada was known for his extensive web of informers, whom he would often meet in the back seat of a church. (由于这个虚构的角色依赖于贝克街非正规军的地下关系网,所以卡米纳达以他广泛的线人网络而闻名,他经常在教堂的后座上见到这些线人。)”可知,B选项“卡米纳达以他在贝克街广泛的线人网络而闻名”不能证明卡米纳达是福尔摩斯的原型。故选B。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Caminada tracked her down and arrested her, but in an echo of Holmes’ fascination with Adler the detective apparently became attracted by her .(卡米纳达追踪并逮捕了她,但正如福尔摩斯对阿德勒的迷恋一样,这位侦探显然也被她吸引了。)”可知,卡米纳达爱上了Alicia Ormonde。故选C。

第二节 (满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Its yellowed pages were curling, just like dry leaves.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Paragraph 1: The next morning, Clara uploaded a new video.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: A week later, Timmy, now a famous furniture designer, walked in the workshop.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】The next morning, Clara uploaded a new video. This time, her camera swept across the leather album’s sketches of Timmy’s curved spoon and lingered on a yellowed newspaper clipping featuring his iconic stairs. As Grandfather narrated their story, she zoomed in on his hands — wrinkled yet steady — shaping a piece of wood into art. The video ended with his voice, “Hands remember stories machines forget.” By noon, comments exploded, “Hands of a legend!” “Need this magic in my home!” Shares of the video skyrocketed. Amid the flood of praise, Clara spotted a message, “I’m coming to see you soon, Master-back to where the magic began!” Her eyes widened at Timmy’s profile picture which just matched the same grin from that faded photo.
A week later, Timmy, now a famous furniture designer, walked in the workshop. He embraced Grandfather, tears glistening. “Your spoon taught me curves have souls,” he said, placing the curved spoon on the desk. Together, they designed a signature chair — Timmy sketching modern lines on his tablet while Grandfather penciling his classic curves. Clara captured the moment: their four hands shaping a maple chair leg together, mirroring the one Grandfather had glued a week before. When Timmy posted the video, orders poured in: new chairs with curved legs, and even wooden benches for the town park. Wood shavings danced in the sunlight as the workshop came back to life, the order book’s empty February page now filled with March’s growing demands.
