He set a new Olympic record for the longest javelin (标枪) throw — 92.97 meters. The 27-yearold became the first Pakistani to secure an individual gold medal. And one more historic thing: He is undoubtedly the first Olympic champion to be given a buffalo (水牛) as a reward. Nadeem grew up in a rural community in the Punjab province of Pakistan. He was a gifted athlete who was attracted to cricket (板球). Then his dad, who worked as a construction worker, suggested he try a javelin. On a morning TV show, a host asked about the buffalo. Nadeem said, “Okay, a buffalo will be good.” “In rural communities, a buffalo is considered one of the most honorable and valuable gifts, much like camels in desert regions like Saudi Arabia,” says Rashad Bukhari, a writer and cultural commentator. Buffalo’s milk is called the black gold of Pakistan. With a higher fat and protein content than cow’s milk, buffalo milk makes up 72% of the nation’s milk supply. Their milk is also well-suited to turn into ghee, a clarified butter that plays a vital role in the Pakistani diet, Bukhari adds. The price of a buffalo is high. That’s why Pakistanis call a buffalo a poor man’s bank. It does not even require too much care like other high maintenance animals. After letting the animal feed on grass during the day, mostly people would tie their buffalo with a tree in their yard at night. Besides, buffalo are well-suited for both hot and cold climates. In Punjab, in ancient times there was a profession called khoji, meaning “detective.” A khoji could study the footprints left by a buffalo thief and follow tracks for days, even weeks, until the thief was discovered. Now, of course, the security cameras and modern roads have brought an end to the profession. Buffalo are also a part of the traditional property brought by a female to her husband at marriage in Punjab. 4. What can be learnt about Nadeem? A He is working as a TV show host. B. He originally intended to be a cricketer. C. He was required to take up his father’s job. D. He competed in the Olympics for a buffalo. 5. What are buffalo valued for according to Bukhari? A. Their time-honored history. B. Their cultural promotion. C. Their multi-purpose milk. D. Their work like camels. 6 What can we say about raising a buffalo in Pakistan? A. It’s science-based. B. It’s time-consuming. C. It’s eco-friendly. D. It’s cost-effective. 7. What does the author want to show about the buffalo by mentioning khoji? A. Its importance in old days. B. Its guarantee of a marriage. C. Its decline of traditional roles. D. Its symbol of modern property. C The city of Boston announced recently a major, citywide campaign to re-imagine public art. The Un-Monument initiative has received a donation of $3 million from the Mellon Foundation. The initiative aims to bring residents, artists and groups together to rethink the form and function of public art across the city. “It isn’t always easy to bring new things into public space,” said Kara Elliott-Ortega, Boston’s Chief of Arts and Culture. “Not just because there might be needless and time-consuming procedures, but because there’re spaces that are thought of as kind of frozen in time in a historic way.” Elliott-Ortega said they’ll take advantage of the funding to engage in dialogues with people about the creation of public art through temporary installations (装置), free public events and interactive cultural experiences. “We’re focused on unpacking what kinds of monuments (纪念碑) we want to have in Boston going forward, what they mean to us, what stories are missing,” said Elliott-Ortega. Boston is one of nine U. S. cities to receive funding from the Mellon Foundation. Its president Elizabeth Alexander said, “Regarding other public art, understanding and acceptance are necessary. At the end of this, I hope that the work goes on, with Mellon or with others, because the work of telling stories in public places is timeless work. So the right way is that the work continues in a way that recognizes us in all of our power and beauty.” Victor “Marka27” Qui Onez is among the initial group of artists participating in Un-Monument. He’s creating a large sculptural installation, Elevar la Cultura, consisting of 30 to 40 plastic picnic coolers. “For the most part, people use coolers for leisure time — at celebrations, barbecues, and all those things,” said Qui Onez. The artist, who was born in Mexico, came to America as a child. “But for many immigrant (移民) cultures, the cooler is a way that people who come to this country are able to make an honest living for their families, selling fresh fruit, cooked food, whatever it may be.” 8. What’s the main challenge of re-imagining public art in Boston? A. People are attached to the past. B. There are not enough funds. C. Residents show no interest in it. D. It’s difficult to find top artists. 9. What will the funding be used to do? A. Restore Boston’s old public art works. B. Create public art suitable for Boston. C. Organize more events to collect money. D. Hire more artists to create modern art. 10. What is Alexander’s hope for public art? A. Increasing its quantity. B. Speeding up its progress. C. Keeping it more traditional. D. Making it more inclusive. 11. What does the cooler symbolize for Qui Onez? A. Immigrants’ survival. B. Leisure activity. C. A wealth symbol. D. An artistic tool. D Facing intense competition for foods, sea otters (海獭) survive with the help of tools — like rocks and even glass bottles — that let them break open tougher prey (猎物) that they wouldn’t otherwise be able to eat. That’s according to a new study of sea otters in Monterey Bay, California, which took a look at the tool use of individual otters. The findings reveal how this may increase their chances of survival in an uncertain world. Sea otters spend their days looking around for food in kelp (海草) forests. They dive to the bottom to grab tasty food, plus sometimes rocks that they plan to use as tools. They bring these to the surface and float on their backs as they get to work on opening and eating their snacks. “Their preferred food is urchins,” says biologist Chris Law, who notes that urchins are relatively easy for otters to break apart. But there are areas with an over-abundance of urchins, where urchins have eaten all the kelp. Since the kelp is gone, however, these urchins no longer have a good food supply and provide little nutritional value for otters. That’s a matter of life-and death to otters, so they aren’t interested in consuming them. “So that means otters have to eat alternative foods,” says Law. “Many of them are those super hard prey items that really require some kind of external force to break into.” Law and some coworkers analyzed data on 196 otters in California. It turns out that frequent tool users were able to eat harder and larger prey. This was particularly paramount for female otters, since they’re smaller than males and aren’t able to bite down with as much force. “They typically wouldn’t be able to break into harder prey,” says Law. “But they use tools more than males, so they’re able to gain access to these novel sources of food items.” Besides, using tools protected the otters’ teeth. The researchers found that tool users had less dental damage from biting hard food items. 12. What’s the relationship between kelp and urchins? A. Urchins sometimes destroy kelp forests. B. Kelp and urchins always coexist. C. Urchins completely depend on kelp. D. Kelp rarely supports urchin growth. 13. Why have sea otters given up eating urchins? A. Urchins are too easy for them to break apart. B. Urchins have started to enjoy tough prey. C. Urchins fail to offer what they need most. D. Urchins have already turned to eating kelp. 14. What does the underlined word “paramount” in paragraph 3 mean? A. Safe. B. Important. C. Impossible. D. Unnecessary. 15. What’s the best title for the text? A. Sea Otters Look for Alternative Foods B. Sea Otters Lose Their Favorite Foods C. How Sea Otters Adapt to Challenges D. What Sea Otters Eat to Keep Healthy In today’s fast-paced world, effective studying is essential for academic success. Looking around the area, he was finally happy. The past year had been tough after getting fired from his job right before Christmas. He found a job months later. Unfortunately, that was when his landlord (房东) decided to sell his apartment. So he had to find a new home fast. Luckily, this place became available. He stepped on something on the floor when he was cleaning up. It was a picture frame (相框). After turning it around, Anthony found that the picture showed an old woman sitting on a rocking chair. But the surprising part is that he recognized her. That was a year ago when he still had his old job as a bus driver. He was finishing his bus route as an older lady got on the bus. That particular December night in Minneapolis, Minnesota, was cold. Snow was pouring, and Anthony wanted to get home quickly. Additionally, he had recently heard some news about budget cuts, and apparently, some people were about to get fired. He was thinking about the negative issues when the woman’s bus card kept getting rejected. “Sir, I’m sorry. I left my wallet at home. May I pay you back soon? I’ll leave you my phone number. Please, it’s so cold,” the woman begged. “I’m sorry, lady. My bosses strictly prohibit that. Please exit,” Anthony said finally. The woman tried to explain her case again, but Anthony lost his temper, “GET OUT RIGHT NOW!” She almost cried but turned around and exited the bus. The following morning, Anthony woke up full of guilt. The morning news said there was a massive snowstorm that night, and he wondered if the woman got home safely. Then, he received a phone call from his company, telling him he was fired. Staring at the old woman’s photograph, Anthony found the guilt came back to him in full force. Believing the woman was the previous renter of his apartment, he decided to call his new landlord Jack and ask about her. Jack said the lady was Helen Miller and gave Anthony her phone number. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ “I appreciate your apology. D 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇应用文。文章介绍了希思菲尔德国际暑期学校的相关信息。 【1题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段“Our General English courses focus on developing communicative skills which are immediately applicable in the real-world environment.(我们的通用英语课程专注于培养在现实环境中可以直接应用的交际技能)”可推知,通用英语课程是实用的。故选B。 【2题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段“For over 40 years, we have provided high-quality summer courses in the English language for international students — 8-17 year olds.(40多年来,我们一直为8至17岁的国际学生提供高质量的英语暑期课程)”和第二段提到“Maximum 16 students per class; all are girls.(每班最多16名学生,而且都是女生)”可知,希思菲尔德国际暑期学校只招收8-17岁的女孩。故选C。 【3题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“We know your daughter will enjoy a fantastic summer holiday at Heathfield’s Summer School.(我们知道您的女儿会在希思菲尔德暑期学校度过一个美妙的暑假)”可知,这篇文章中提到“您的女儿”。由此推知,这篇文章是写给父母的。故选D。 B Arshad Nadeem made history at the Paris 2024 Olympics. A. He is working as a TV show host. B. He originally intended to be a cricketer. C. He was required to take up his father’s job. D. He competed in the Olympics for a buffalo. 5. What are buffalo valued for according to Bukhari? A. Their time-honored history. B. Their cultural promotion. C. Their multi-purpose milk. D. Their work like camels. 6. What can we say about raising a buffalo in Pakistan? A. It’s science-based. B. It’s time-consuming. C. It’s eco-friendly. D. It’s cost-effective. 7. What does the author want to show about the buffalo by mentioning khoji? A. Its importance in old days. B. Its guarantee of a marriage. C. Its decline of traditional roles. D. Its symbol of modern property. 【答案】4. B 5. C 6. D 7. A 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇新闻报道。文章讲述了2024年巴黎奥运会上,巴基斯坦运动员阿沙德·纳迪姆创造了标枪项目的新奥运会纪录,并成为巴基斯坦首位获得个人金牌的运动员,此外他还收到了一头水牛作为奖励。 【4题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“He was a gifted athlete who was attracted to cricket. Then his dad, who worked as a construction worker, suggested he try a javelin.(他是一名有天赋的运动员,对板球很感兴趣。然后,他的父亲,一名建筑工人,建议他尝试标枪)”可知,纳迪姆最初打算成为一名板球运动员。故选B。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段“Buffalo’s milk is called the black gold of Pakistan. With a higher fat and protein content than cow’s milk, buffalo milk makes up 72% of the nation’s milk supply. Their milk is also well-suited to turn into ghee, a clarified butter that plays a vital role in the Pakistani diet, Bukhari adds.(水牛的奶被称为巴基斯坦的黑金。与牛奶相比,水牛奶的脂肪和蛋白质含量更高,占全国牛奶供应量的72%。布哈里补充说,它们的牛奶也非常适合制作酥油,酥油是一种澄清的黄油,在巴基斯坦人的饮食中起着至关重要的作用)”可知,水牛的价值体现在它们多用途的牛奶上。故选C。 【6题详解】 细节理解题。根据第五段“The price of a buffalo is high. That’s why Pakistanis call a buffalo a poor man’s bank. It does not even require too much care like other high maintenance animals. After letting the animal feed on grass during the day, mostly people would tie their buffalo with a tree in their yard at night.(水牛的价格很高。这就是为什么巴基斯坦人把水牛称为穷人的银行。它甚至不需要像其他需要高维护成本的动物那样太多的照顾。白天让水牛在草地上吃草后,大多数人晚上会把水牛拴在院子里的树上)”可知,在巴基斯坦养一头水牛很划算,因为水牛价格高,被称为穷人的银行,而且它不需要太多的照顾。故选D。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“In Punjab, in ancient times there was a profession called khoji, meaning “detective.” A khoji could study the footprints left by a buffalo thief and follow tracks for days, even weeks, until the thief was discovered. Now, of course, the security cameras and modern roads have brought an end to the profession.(在旁遮普,古代有一个职业叫做khoji,意思是“侦探”。一个khoji可以研究水牛小偷留下的脚印,并跟踪数天甚至数周,直到小偷被发现。当然,现在监控摄像头和现代道路的出现结束了这个职业)”可推知,作者通过提到khoji想展示水牛在过去的重要性。故选A。 C The city of Boston announced recently a major, citywide campaign to re-imagine public art. 【答案】8. A 9. B 10. D 11. A 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇新闻报道。文章讲述了波士顿市宣布开展一项全市性的重塑公共艺术运动,名为“非纪念碑”计划,并介绍了该计划的相关信息。 【8题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段“Not just because there might be needless and time-consuming procedures, but because there’re spaces that are thought of as kind of frozen in time in a historic way.(这不仅仅是因为可能存在不必要且耗时的程序,还因为有些空间被认为是以一种历史性的方式凝固在时间里)”可知,在波士顿重塑公共艺术的主要挑战是人们倾向于认为某些空间在历史上是凝固的。由此推知,人们总是留恋过去。故选A。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“Elliott-Ortega said they’ll take advantage of the funding to engage in dialogues with people about the creation of public art through temporary installations (装置), free public events and interactive cultural experiences.(Elliott-Ortega表示,他们将利用这笔资金,通过临时装置、免费公共活动和互动文化体验等方式,与人们就公共艺术的创作进行对话)”可知,资金将用于创作适合波士顿的公共艺术。故选B。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段“At the end of this, I hope that the work goes on, with Mellon or with others, because the work of telling stories in public places is timeless work. So the right way is that the work continues in a way that recognizes us in all of our power and beauty.(最后,我希望这项工作能继续下去,无论是和Mellon合作还是和其他人合作,因为在公共场所讲故事工作是永恒的。所以正确的方式是,这项工作以一种承认我们所有力量和美丽的方式继续下去)”可推知,Alexander希望公共艺术更具包容性。故选D。 【11题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段“But for many immigrant (移民) cultures, the cooler is a way that people who come to this country are able to make an honest living for their families, selling fresh fruit, cooked food, whatever it may be.(但对于许多移民文化来说,冷藏箱是那些来到这个国家的人能够为家人谋生的方式,他们卖新鲜水果、熟食,或者其他任何东西)”可知,对于Qui Onez来说,冷藏箱象征着移民的生存。故选A。 D Facing intense competition for foods, sea otters (海獭) survive with the help of tools — like rocks and even glass bottles — that let them break open tougher prey (猎物) that they wouldn’t otherwise be able to eat. What Sea Otters Eat to Keep Healthy 【答案】12. A 13. C 14. B 15. C 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了加州蒙特雷湾的海獭在面对食物短缺时,如何利用工具如岩石和玻璃瓶来获取食物以维持生存。 【12题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“But there are areas with an over-abundance of urchins, where urchins have eaten all the kelp. (但在有些地区海胆数量过剩,海胆吃光了所有的海草。)”可知,海胆有时会破坏海草森林。故选A项。 【13题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“Since the kelp is gone, however, these urchins no longer have a good food supply and provide little nutritional value for otters. (然而,由于海草消失了,这些海胆不再有良好的食物供应,对海獭来说营养价值也很低。)”可知,海獭放弃吃海胆是因为海胆无法提供它们最需要的营养。故选C项。 【14题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第三段“This was particularly paramount for female otters, since they’re smaller than males and aren’t able to bite down with as much force. (这对雌性海獭来说尤其paramount,因为它们比雄性小,咬合力也不如雄性大。)”以及下文“But they use tools more than males, so they’re able to gain access to these novel sources of food items. (但它们比雄性更频繁地使用工具,因此能够获取这些新的食物来源。)”可知,使用工具对雌性海獭来说非常重要,因为它们体型较小,咬合力不足,而使用工具能够帮助它们获取新的食物来源。因此推断paramount意为“重要的”,与important表达的意思一致。故选B项。 【15题详解】 主旨大意题。根据全文内容,尤其是第一段“In parts of the ocean where sea otters (海獭) face harsh competition for their favorite kinds of food, some otters are getting by with the help of tools — like rocks and even glass bottles — that let them hit open tougher prey that they wouldn’t otherwise be able to eat. In today’s fast-paced world, effective studying is essential for academic success. By 2030, these 100 destinations are expected to offer more ____44____ (opportunity) for nature-based activities and sustainable growth, demonstrating how _____45_____ (careful) planned projects can benefit both people and the planet. 【答案】36. boosting 37. which 38. and 39. as 40. submitted 41. be evaluated 42. themselves 43. reliable 44. opportunities 45. carefully 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇说明文。 故填which。 【38题详解】 考查连词。句意同上。“strong natural resources”“clear long-term development plans”“growth potential”和“stable local finances”是并列关系,共同作为“criteria”的内容,所以用“and”连接。故填and。 【39题详解】 考查介词。句意:每个省份在第一阶段最多可以提出四个城市作为候选城市。表示“作为”需用介词as。故填as。 【40题详解】 考查状语从句的省略。句意:一旦提交,这些候选城市关于自然优势和发展目标的规划将由中央部门通过专家评审和部门间讨论进行仔细评估,以确保在不同地区都能选出公平的名单。once引导时间状语从句的主语和主句的主语一致,可以省略从句的主语和be动词,完整的从句是“once these candidates’ plans are submitted”,省略了these candidates’ plans are,空处需用过去分词submitted。故填submitted。 【41题详解】 考查语态。句意同上。分析句子结构可知,空处需用谓语动词,由空前will可知,空处谓语动词需用一般将来时,因为计划是被评估,所以空处谓语动词需用一般将来时的被动语态will be done。故填be evaluated。 Dear Peter, ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Yours, Li Hua 【答案】Dear Peter, I’m extremely excited to share some wonderful news with you that my science fiction painting titled Technology Transforms the Future won the first prize in our school’s 14th Middle School Students’ Science and Technology Festival. I’m really eager to have more in-depth discussions with you about this. Looking forward to your early reply! Yours, Li Hua 【解析】 【导语】本篇书面表达是一篇应用文。要求考生给英国好友Peter写封邮件告知自己在参加学校第十四届中学生科技节活动时获奖的喜讯,阐释作品和自己的感悟。 【详解】1.词汇积累 兴奋的:excited →thrilled 充满:be full of →be filled with 意识到:realize →be aware of 渴望:be eager to →long for 2.句式拓展 简单句变复合句 原句:It’s full of floating cars, tall buildings covered with solar panels, and robots helping people with daily tasks. 拓展句:It’s full of floating cars, tall buildings that are covered with solar panels, and robots helping people with daily tasks. 【点睛】[高分句型1] It shows how technology can bring a more convenient and eco-friendly life.(运用了how引导宾语从句) [高分句型2] This experience has made me realize that science and technology are keys to shaping our future.(运用了that引导宾语从句) 第二节(满分25分) 47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。 Anthony finished carrying his boxes into a new apartment. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Jack said the lady was Helen Miller and gave Anthony her phone number. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ “I appreciate your apology. But why do you call a year later?” Helen asked. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: Jack said the lady was Helen Miller and gave Anthony her phone number. It took him a while to get up all his courage to dial the digits. “This is Helen Miller. Can I help you?” a woman replied. “My name is Anthony. I was the bus driver who kicked you out in the cold,” Anthony explained anxiously. “Oh, is it really you?” Helen responded, surprised but calm. “Yes. I’m so sorry. I’ve regretted it ever since,” Anthony admitted, his voice shaking. “I appreciate your apology. But why do you call a year later?” Helen asked. “I found your picture frame today in your old apartment, and I got your phone number from Jack,” Anthony explained. Helen shared her story of that night, her walking home in the snow, and her illness that followed. Hearing Helen’s story, Anthony regretted his actions that day even more. He promised her never to do that to anyone again and would like to help her when necessary. Helen suggested, “The senior center needs help this weekend. Would you like to volunteer?”Anthony agreed without hesitation. He often visited Helen. Their interactions led to a monthly volunteering commitment and a growing friendship. 词汇激活 行为类 ①回答:reply/respond ②解释:explain/account for ③建议:suggest/recommend 情绪类 ①惊讶:surprised/astonished ②抱歉:sorry/apologetic 【点睛】【高分句型1】 “My name is Anthony. I was the bus driver who kicked you out in the cold,” Anthony explained anxiously. (由who引导的限制性定语从句) 【高分句型2】He promised her never to do that to anyone again and would like to help her when necessary.
