One of the ocean’s noisiest creatures is smaller than you’d expect — snapping shrimp(鼓虾). They create a widespread background noise in the underwater environment, which helps them communicate, defend territories and hunt for food. When enough shrimp snap(发出噼啪声)at once, the noise can dominate the soundscape of coastal waters.
Aran Mooney,a biologist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, suggested that with increased ocean temperatures, snapping shrimp will snap more often and louder than before. This could raise the background noise of the global ocean. "They make a sound by closing a claw so fast. This makes a bubble(泡泡)and when that bubble explodes,it makes that snapping sound," said Mooney.
Mooney detected a strong relationship between warmer waters and deafening, more frequent snapping shrimp sounds by experimenting with the shrimp in tanks in the lab and by listening to the shrimp in the ocean at various water temperatures. "As the temperature rises, the snap rate increases," he said. This makes sense because shrimp are essentially cold - blooded animals, meaning their body temperature and activity levels are largely controlled by their living environment. "We can actually show in the field that not only do snap rates increase, but the sound levels increase as well," he said.
How the louder snapping shrimp would bother or benefit the surroundings remained to be seen. "We know that fish use sound to communicate," Mooney said. "If the environment gets noisy,it has the potential to influence that communication. That’s something we have to follow up on." There is also the possibility that the change of snapping shrimp disturbs instruments humans use to detect mines, which could have implications for national defense.
1. What can we learn about the snapping shrimp from the first paragraph?
A. Their sound serves multiple purposes.
B. They are the noisiest creatures in the ocean.
C. They mainly live in the deep sea.
D. Their sound is harmful to other sea animals.
2. How did Mooney draw the conclusion?
A. By studying the shrimp’s living habits.
B. By analyzing data from previous research.
C. By observing the shrimp in the wild.
D. By comparing shrimp sounds in different places.
3. What may be affected by the louder snapping shrimp according to the text?
A. The balance of the food chain in the ocean.
B. The ability of fish to hunt for food.
C. The communication of fish and human defense instruments.
D. The temperature of the ocean environment.

Inspired by the work of William Beebe,Dr.Sylvia Earle began her work as an oceanographer at an early age when she 1 (knock) off her feet by a wave. She was so attracted by the ocean world that she decided to devote her life to exploring it.
As an oceanographer,Dr.Earle has made many significant contributions. She led many deep - sea expeditions. During these expeditions, she used various submersibles. One of her most famous dives was in a deep - sea submersible. In this small, cramped vehicle, she descended to great depths. The underwater world she witnessed was full of strange and wonderful creatures. The experience was not without risks. The pressure at those depths is extremely high, and the submersible had to be carefully maintained. But Dr.Earle’s passion for discovery drove her forward.
She also played a crucial role in raising awareness about ocean conservation. Through her books, lectures and media appearances, she educated the public about the importance of protecting the ocean. She pointed out that the ocean is not only home to countless species but also plays a vital role in regulating the Earth’s climate. However, human activities such as overfishing, pollution and coastal development are threatening the health of the ocean. Dr.Earle believed that if people could see the beauty and importance of the ocean, they would be more likely to take action to protect it.
1. 在文中1处填入所给词的适当形式。
2. Why did Dr.Sylvia Earle decide to explore the ocean?
3. What risks did Dr.Earle face during her deep - sea dives?
4. How did Dr.Earle contribute to ocean conservation?
五、语法填空
The ocean, which covers more than 70% of the Earth’s surface,is 1 amazing and mysterious place. It is home to countless species, some of 2 are still unknown to us.
Throughout history, humans 3 (be) fascinated by the ocean and have made great efforts 4 (explore) it. In ancient times, sailors used the stars and the wind 5 (guide) their voyages. They traveled across the seas in search of new lands, resources and trade opportunities.
With the development of technology, our exploration of the ocean has become more in - depth. Submersibles allow us to reach great depths and observe the underwater world 6 (close). Satellites can provide us with valuable information about the ocean’s surface and weather conditions.
However, our exploration of the ocean also brings some problems. For example, deep - sea mining may cause damage to the ocean ecosystem. We need to find a balance between exploration and 7 (protect).
The ocean is not only a source of resources but also a vital part of our planet. We should continue to explore it 8 (wise) and use the knowledge we gain 9 (make) it a better place for all living things. After all,we all 10 (share) this beautiful blue planet.

四、阅读理解
A
1. A 解析:由第一段中的"They create a widespread background helps them communicate, defend territories and hunt for food"可知,鼓虾发出的声音有助于它们交流、保卫领土和寻找食物,即其声音有多种作用,故本题选A。
2. D 解析:由第三段的"Mney detected a strong relationship between warmer in the lab and by listening to the shrimp in the ocean at various water temperatures"可知,Mney通过实验室的水箱用鼓虾做实验,并听海洋中各种水温里的鼓虾发出的声音,发现了温暖的水域与震耳欲聋、更频繁的鼓虾声之间的密切关系,即他通过对比不同地点鼓虾发出的声音得出了结论,所以本题选D。
3. C 解析:根据最后一段可知,鼓虾声音变大可能会影响鱼类交流以及人类用于探测水雷的仪器,所以选C。
B
1. was knocked
2. Because she was attracted by the ocean world when a wave knocked her off her feet at an early age.
3. The pressure at great depths is extremely high and the submersible had to be carefully maintained.
4. She raised awareness about ocean conservation through her books, lectures and media appearances and educated the public about the importance of protecting the ocean.
