He cared for his aging parents, sent two siblings to college, and even helped them get married. Yet,despite these incredible achievements, his response was always the same whenever I praised him:“Not good enough. Not yet.” I know this mindset well, having grown up in an entrepreneurial family where my performance was constantly measured through comparisons. “Look at so-and-so’s son and how well he’s doing.” my father would say. The thought of meeting these standards blinded me to the 90% of things I was doing right. Instead, I became focused on the never-ending 10% I hadn’t achieved to prove myself, and if not, I would become bitter toward myself and those Iwas trying to match in performance. I would develop an inflated self-confidence that I would dominate all aspects of business or have no confidence in certain business activities. When I didn't feel competitive enough, I lost opportunities and friendships when there was a better approach for collaboration and a win-win. I often didn’t know why I was competing: I just wanted to prove to my father that I was better than the other guy, and he was wrong. Later in my life, I came to realize that life can be competitive, but comparison is not the right approach to growth. It’s the enemy of self-acceptance, breeding feelings of inadequacy. When we compare ourselves, we might create slightly better versions than others, but it comes at the expense of our authenticity. When you accept yourself, you’ll realize that you only need to meet your natural and basic expectations, not anyone else’s. That’s when you begin to live authentically and give others the space to grow into their best selves within their abilities and circumstances. An oak tree doesn’t strive to become a smaller banana tree or a much larger mountain. It grows into its most natural and beautiful form, providing shade and strength for those who need it. 4. What does the author want to show by telling his friend’s story? A. Family support is the key to success. B. Poverty motivates greater achievements. C. Financial success doesn’t mean a happy life. D. Achievement doesn’t guarantee self-acceptance. 5. What does the underlined word “inflated” in paragraph 2 mean? A. Overstated. B. Humble. C. Stable. D. Unsurprising. 6. What is a consequence of comparison according to the author? A. Motivation decline. B. Self-worth decrease. C. Personality disorder. D. Superiority complex. 7. What does the last paragraph imply? A. Constant comparison fuels one’s ambition. B. Competition contributes to success. C. Self-acceptance enables authentic growth. D. Social acceptance determines one’s value. C Seed libraries emerged as a revolutionary concept nearly a generation ago. The earliest example is BASIL, the Bay Area Seed Interchange Library. In 2000, University of CaliforniaBerkeley closed its campus farm to make room for research into genetically modified corn. This left the farm's collection of seeds homeless. Activists persuaded the Berkeley EcologyCenter to sponsor a lending library that would make the seeds available to local gardeners, who in turn would harvest and return seeds from the crops they grew to make possible the next year’s distribution. From there, the seed library concept took off, spreading throughout all 50 states. Not only do seed libraries offer customers a free start in gardening, they can also make available seeds adapted to local growing conditions. Garden retailers (零售商) tend to stock nationally distributed lines of best-selling seeds that are chosen for their ability to grow over a broad area. A seed library, which isn’t driven by the need for profit, can focus on what performs best in the local soils and climate. Besides distributing seeds seed libraries also encourage seed saving among their customers, so that the loans can be repaid at the end of the growing season. This is why the vegetable, fruit and flower varieties that seed libraries distribute are typically open pollinated(授粉). That is, when pollinated naturally by insects, birds, or wind, the plants bear seeds that produce a new generation closely resembling the parents. Hybrids, the mainstay of conventional seed producers, do not “come true” in this fashion, and so they’re avoided by most seed libraries. This has a couple of significant impacts. First, seed libraries tend to emphasize old-fashioned, heirloom (原种) plant varieties that originated before the modern emphasis on hybrid fruits and vegetables. In this way, seed libraries play a significant part in helping to keep such heirlooms available to gardeners. Then, because gardeners typically save seed from the stronger and more fruitful samples, they tend to preserve and reproduce the best adapted individuals. This practice encourages the gradual evolution of an ever-more locally adapted species. In this way, seed libraries are becoming ever more relevant to the needs of gardeners. 8. What distinguishes seed libraries from garden retailers? A. They focus on locally adapted seeds. B. They offer seeds at a lower price. C. They prioritize profit over sustainability. D. They distribute best-selling seeds. 9. What is stressed about open-pollinated plants in paragraph 3? A. Their high output. B. Their distinct appearance. C. Their rich varieties. D. Their biological advantages. 10. What is one important role of seed libraries? A. Promoting the study of hybrid fruits and vegetables. B. Ensuring the availability of heirloom plant varieties. C. Making efforts to develop entirely new plant species. D. Encouraging gardeners to change traditional methods. 11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. Gardeners Starve for Best Seeds B. The Rise and Fall of Seed Libraries C. Seed Libraries Help Gardening Grow D. The Future of Hybrid-plant Gardening D Language models like Claude aren’t programmed directly by humans — instead, they’re trained on large amounts of data. During that training process, they learn their own strategies to solve problems. These strategies are encoded in the billions of computations a model performs for every word it writes. They arrive incomprehensible to us, the model’s developers. Put simply, we have limited insight into how models do most of the things they do. Knowing how models like Claude think would allow us to have a better understanding of their abilities, as well as help us ensure that they’re doing what we intend them to. We take inspiration from the field of neuroscience (神经科学), which has long studied the messy insides of thinking organisms, and try to build a kind of AI microscope that will let us identify patterns of activity and flows of information. There are limits to what you can learn just by talking to anAI model — after all, humans (even neuroscientists) don’t know all the details of how our own brains work. So we look inside. The researchers conduct two new studies that represent progress on the development of the“microscope”, and the application of it to see new“AI biology”. In the first study, we extend our prior work locating interpretable concepts (“features”) inside a model to link those concepts together into computational“circuits” (电路), revealing parts of the pathway that transforms the words that go into Claude into the words that come out. In the second, we look inside Claude 3.5 Haiku, performing deep studies of simple tasks representative of ten crucial model behaviors. The studies shed light on a part of what happens when Claude responds to these prompts (提示). Claude sometimes thinks in a conceptual space that is shared between languages, suggesting it has a kind of universal “language of thought”. Claude will plan what it will say many words ahead, and write to get to that destination. This is powerful evidence that even though models are trained to output one word at a time, they may think on much longer horizons to do so. 12. What do we know about Claude from paragraph 1? A. Claude’s outputs are predictable. B. Claude learns autonomously from data. C. Claude can collect large amounts of data. D. Claude’s decisions are easily explainable. 13. Why does the author mention neuroscience in paragraph 2? A. To explore how AI models work. B. To show the limits of AI models. C. To compare AI with human brains. D. To study how AI is programmed. 14. What can we learn about the studies? A. They measure AI’s word-output speed. B. They record AI’s rapid development. C. They reveal AI’s inner computations. D. They show AI’s practical application. 15. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about? A. Claude’s unique thinking mode. B. Claude’s training data source. C. Claude’s word processing efficiency. D. Claude’s language learning ability. In today’s fast-paced society the importance of time management is undeniable. She had been saving up for this dinner for months, wanting to give Holly a wonderful birthday. Before she could make a choice,a group of waiters appeared, singing “Happy Birthday” as they carried a towering cake. Holly’s eyes grew wide with wonder, her smile stretching from ear to ear. Seeing her daughter’s face light up made every penny Kate had saved worth it. For a moment, Kate forgot about the financial struggles, the hard work, and the sacrifices. All that mattered was Holly's happiness. As Holly tasted her cake, her face glowing with delight, a waiter approached Kate quietly and gestured for her to step aside. “Ma’am, the cost is going to double,” the waiter said. “Double? Why?” she responded, panic bubbling up in her voice. “The recipe for the cake has changed, and you will have to pay $100 now,” the waiter explained. Her throat tightened. “$100 for a cake?! But...I can’t afford it,” she whispered. “I’m sorry, ma’am. But you’ll have to pay,” the waiter said. With trembling hands, Kate returned to the table, forcing a smile for Holly. When it was time to leave, Kate felt her heart pounding as she asked Holly to wait by the door. Her mind raced, trying to figure out what she could do. Her hands were trembling as she spoke. When you accept yourself you’ll realize that you only need to meet your natural and basic expectations, not anyone else’s. D 5. A 6. B 7. 根据第一段“My friend had built a multimillion-dollar business from nothing, rising out of poverty. He cared for his aging parents, sent two siblings to college, and even helped them get married. Yet, despite these incredible achievements, his response was always the same whenever I praised him: ‘Not good enough. 根据第二段“I became focused on the never-ending 10% I hadn’t achieved to prove myself, and if not, I would become bitter toward myself and those I was trying to match in performance. I would develop an inflated self-confidence that I would dominate all aspects of business or have no confidence in certain business activities.(我专注于那永远存在的我尚未实现的10%来证明自己,如果做不到,我就会对自己和那些我试图在表现上与之匹敌的人感到不满。我会产生一种inflated的自信,认为自己能在商业的各个方面占据主导地位,或者对某些商业活动毫无信心。)”以及上下文语境可知,作者因为不断和他人比较,会产生一种过度的自信,认为自己能主导商业的各个方面。所以inflated意思是“夸大的,过度的”,与A选项Overstated.(夸大的)意思相近。故选A。 根据第三段“Later in my life, I came to realize that life can be competitive, but comparison is not the right approach to growth. It’s the enemy of self-acceptance, breeding feelings of inadequacy. When we compare ourselves, we might create slightly better versions than others, but it comes at the expense of our authenticity.(在后来的生活中,我逐渐意识到生活可能是有竞争性的,但比较并不是成长的正确方式。它是自我接纳的敌人,滋生出不足感。当我们与他人比较时,我们可能会创造出比别人稍好一点的自己,但这是以牺牲我们的真实性为代价的。)”可知,作者认为比较的一个后果是自我价值感降低。故选B。 7题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“When you accept yourself, you’ll realize that you only need to meet your natural and basic expectations, not anyone else’s. That’s when you begin to live authentically and give others the space to grow into their best selves within their abilities and circumstances. An oak tree doesn’t strive to become a smaller banana tree or a much larger mountain. It grows into its most natural and beautiful form, providing shade and strength for those who need it.(当你接受自己时,你会意识到你只需要满足自己自然和基本的期望,而不是别人的期望。从那时起,你开始真实地生活,并给别人空间,让他们在自己的能力和环境中成长为最好的自己。一棵橡树不会努力变成一棵更小的香蕉树或一座更大的山。它长成它最自然、最美丽的样子,为那些需要它的人提供荫蔽和力量。)”可知,最后一段暗示自我接纳能让我们真实地成长。故选C。 C Seed libraries emerged as a revolutionary concept nearly a generation ago. Besides distributing seeds, seed libraries also encourage seed saving among their customers, so that the loans can be repaid at the end of the growing season. The Future of Hybrid-plant Gardening 【答案】8. A 9. D 10. B 11. 根据第二段“Not only do seed libraries offer customers a free start in gardening, they can also make available seeds adapted to local growing conditions. Garden retailers (零售商) tend to stock nationally distributed lines of best-selling seeds that are chosen for their ability to grow over a broad area. A seed library, which isn’t driven by the need for profit, can focus on what performs best in the local soils and climate.(种子图书馆不仅为顾客提供免费的园艺入门机会,还能提供适合当地生长条件的种子。园艺零售商往往会储备在全国范围内销售的畅销种子系列,这些种子是因其在广泛地区生长的能力而被挑选出来的。种子图书馆不受利润需求的驱动,能够专注于在当地土壤和气候条件下表现最佳的种子。)”可知,种子图书馆与园艺零售商的区别在于种子图书馆专注于当地适应的种子。故选A。 根据第三段“Besides distributing seeds, seed libraries also encourage seed saving among their customers, so that the loans can be repaid at the end of the growing season. This is why the vegetable, fruit and flower varieties that seed libraries distribute are typically open pollinated (授粉). That is, when pollinated naturally by insects, birds, or wind, the plants bear seeds that produce a new generation closely resembling the parents. Hybrids, the mainstay of conventional seed producers, do not “come true” in this fashion, and so they’re avoided by most seed libraries.(除了分发种子,种子图书馆还鼓励顾客保存种子,以便在生长季节结束时能够归还种子。 根据第四段“First, seed libraries tend to emphasize old-fashioned, heirloom (原种) plant varieties that originated before the modern emphasis on hybrid fruits and vegetables. In this way, seed libraries play a significant part in helping to keep such heirlooms available to gardeners.(首先,种子图书馆倾向于强调那些在现代重视杂交水果和蔬菜之前就存在的老式原种植物品种。 C。 D Language models like Claude aren’t programmed directly by humans — instead, they’re trained on large amounts of data. 12. B 13. A 14. C 15. Balancing a job that barely paid enough while taking care of her daughter, Holly had been a daily struggle. Money was always tight, and there were many sacrifices, but Kate was determined to make sure Holly never felt like she was missing out on love or happiness. She had been saving up for this dinner for months, wanting to give Holly a wonderful birthday. As they stepped into the restaurant, Holly’s excitement was nearly impossible to contain. Her small hands flipped through the menu. But to her surprise, the waiter responded, “The bill has already been paid by a woman.” Tears of relief sprang to Kate’s eyes. “Do you know who she was?” Kate asked, her voice thick with emotion. The waiter pointed toward the exit. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ As the woman walked away, Kate stood there, lost in thought. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 The waiter pointed toward the exit. Kate turned around and saw a middle-aged woman with a warm smile on her face. She was standing near the door, looking back at Kate. Kate quickly rushed over to thank her. The woman gently held Kate’s hands and said, “I saw you and your daughter. You reminded me of my own mother. She raised me alone too. I know how hard it is. This is my small way of giving back.” Kate was speechless, overcome with gratitude. The woman then handed her a small note and left. As the woman walked away, Kate stood there, lost in thought. She opened the note, which read, “Love and kindness always find a way.” Those words echoed in her mind. She realized that even in the toughest times, there was always someone willing to offer a helping hand. From that day on, Kate made a promise to herself. She would pass on this kindness, no matter how difficult life got. And whenever she saw someone in need, she would remember this moment and do what she could to make a difference, just like that kind-hearted woman did for her and Holly. 词汇激活 行为类 ①看见:see/spot/catch sight of ②说:say/utter ③抚养:raise/bring up 情绪品质类 ①感激: gratitude/thankfulness/appreciation ②好心的:kind-hearted/well-meaning/well-intentioned 【点睛】[高分句型1] She was standing near the door, looking back at Kate.(运用了现在分词作状语) [高分句型2]She opened the note, which read, “Love and kindness always find a way.”(运用了which引导的非限制性定语从句) [高分句型3].
