①Do you know humans spend around one third of their lives sleeping? You go through four stages of sleep several times a night. The first three of the stages are non-REM sleep. These are when the body is being repaired, and gets deeper as the night goes on. Then the body reaches the fourth stage: REM, which means “rapid eye movement” because your eyes move very fast. Cycling through all the stages takes around 90 minutes. At the beginning of the night, you go through stages 1 to 4 in a row. After that, you skip around the different stages. During the night, your sleep stages will be all mixed up and your REM sleep gets longer. Look at the four different sleep stages below.
Stage 1: Light sleep. Muscle (肌肉) activity slow down.
Stage 2: Deep sleep. Brain starts making slow delta waves, which help your body repair.
Stage 3: Very deep sleep. Almost no muscle activity. You may sleepwalk without waking up.
Stage 4: REM. Brainwaves speed up, dreaming happens. Muscle relax and heart rate rises.
②But books and other records from the 15th century suggested people used to sleep in two stages. People would go to sleep between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. for a couple of hours. They would wake up for a while, and they might read a book or visit a neighbour. Afterwards, they would settle down for the second sleep. It was the invention of the light bulb in 1879 that changed this sleep pattern (模式). Artificial light meant people started staying up later, so they slept for one long period of time until morning. The Industrial Revolution (工业革命) also changed how people slept. People had to be ready to start their job. To make sure they didn’t oversleep, people in cities often depended on “knocker-uppers”. As alarm clocks grew popular in the 1930s and 1940s, knocker-uppers weren’t needed any more.
③Researchers say children need around 11 hours of sleep every night. Put screens away thirty to sixty minutes before bedtime and set up a routine every evening. This will help you relax and show your mind that it’s time to rest. If you have lots of thoughts or worries, writing them down before bedtime can help you put them aside for the night.
29. Some people seem to be dreaming all night because ______.
A. each dream lasts about 90 minutes
B. their bodies need more time to repair
C. rapid eye movement causes tiredness
D. REM sleep time increases during the night
30. Tom’s mother is gently leading her son back to his own bed. He might go to sleep again and not remember anything the next morning. Now Tom is in ______.
A. sleep stage 1 B. sleep stage 2 C. sleep stage 3 D. sleep stage 4
31. What do you know about the Industrial Revolution from the text?
A. It led to longer sleep periods for workers.
B. It led to the use of alarm clocks and knocker-uppers.
C. It caused people to sleep in two stages again.
D. It caused people in cities to start sleeping less.
32. Which of the following best explains the underlined word “routine” in Paragraph 3?
A. A difficult task. B. A sudden change. C. A deep thought. D. A fixed habit.

Keepers entering the gorilla (猩猩) land often hear a noise that sounds like a babbling human. But it’s just Mac, a western lowland gorilla. He greets his caregivers by making long, low grumbling sounds, gorilla-speak for “Hi, there!” There is a translation of some of their most often used sounds. For example, “HOO, HOO” means “Help, I’m lost.” A purr like “HUUUUUH” expresses “I’m having fun.” A soft “UH-HUM” shows “Everything’s good.” And “NA-OOM” sounds like “Follow me”. When keepers leave the area, Mac makes a similar sound as if to say “Good night.” Mac isn’t just making noise. Gorillas like him can also use movements and even body odor (气味) to get their point across.
“You’ve got this.”
Fasha got her foot caught in a trap. She managed to get away but was unable to keep up with her group. But Icyororo, the gorilla wasn’t leaving her friend behind. Arms linked, they made their way from rock to rock, crossing a river together. When they reached the other side, Icyororo gave Fasha a hug.
“What’s in it for me?”
Nia was excited when she discovered a new “toy”—a plastic cup in her habitat. When zookeepers came to replace the cup with another toy, Nia wouldn’t give it up. So they offered her a treat as a prize. Nia gave up the cup—and realized that things she found in her habitat could be valuable. The next time Nia found a cup in her space, she broke it into several pieces and only gave the keepers one piece at a time ... in exchange for a treat after every piece.
Other gorillas at the zoo caught on to Nia’s treat. “They hold out an object they think we might want, but not all the way,” zookeeper Carpenter says. “If we try to get it, they’ll pull it back like,” Not so fast! Their actions are telling us that they’ll give us what we want—but only when we offer something they want.
Sadly, gorillas are losing their homes because people cut down forests to mine (开采) minerals (矿物). Most cell phones have a mineral called coltan, which often comes from African forests where gorillas live. “The more technology we create, the more harm we cause to gorillas,” says a zoo expert. “Recycling means we can mine less.” Though it’s exciting to get the latest technology when it comes out, keeping our old ones longer means less coltan needs to be mined from gorillas’ land. A small action can make a big difference.
33. Which can show gorillas “get their point across”?
① Mac makes a similar sound as if to say “Good night.”
② Fasha got her foot caught in a trap.
③ Icyororo wasn’t leaving her friend behind.
④ Icyororo gave Fasha a hug.
A. ①② B. ②③ C. ③④ D. ①④
34. When Fasha got caught in a trap, she may make ______.
A. HOO, HOO B. HUUUUUH C. UH-HUM D. NA-OOM
35. What does Nia’s story mainly show about gorillas?
A. They enjoy collecting human toys.
B. They learn to trade for what they want.
C. They dislike zookeepers’ taking their things.
D. They can protect the objects from breaking.
36. How can we protect gorillas according to the text?
A. Visit zoos to learn more about gorillas.
B. Use your phones as long as possible.
C. Help collect coltan from gorilla forests.
D. Don’t buy the latest technology when it comes out.
D
“That’s strange,” thought Mom, peering into the cookie jar. “It’s empty.”
She turned it upside down, just to make sure.
“I’m sure that I filled it up yesterday,” she thought. “Dad and Harry can’t have eaten them all!”
Mom looked around the kitchen. Everything else seemed to be in the right place. She looked in all the cabinets. She searched on all the shelves. She looked in the refrigerator. She looked in the dog’s bowl. But she couldn’t find the missing cookies anywhere.
When Harry got home from school, Mom was waiting with the cookie jar.
“Anything to tell me?” she asked, pointing to the empty jar.
“Maybe you left them somewhere, Mom,” said Harry. “I mean, you do, um, lose things sometimes.”
Mom tried again when Dad got home.
“They are probably in the dog,” said Dad. “He always looks hungry.”
Suddenly, Harry rushed up to his room. When he came back, he was holding a magnifying glass and a large notebook.
“Don’t worry, Mom,” he said. “Detective Harry—and his dog—are here to solve the mystery of the missing cookies.”
“Humph,” said Dad. “I bet that means you’ll want a reward.”
Harry began searching for clues. He didn’t have to look very hard. He found cookie crumbs on the hall carpet and on the kitchen floor. There were even cookie crumbs on the dog.
“I wonder what that’s doing there?” said Harry, picking up a half-eaten cookie from Dad’s bedside table.
Next, Harry decided to interview the chief suspects.
“Mom,” he said. “How many cookies have you had today?”
“Um, none,” said Mom. “That’s the problem.”
“Dad,” said Harry. “Can you explain what this cookie was doing in your bedroom?”
“I have no idea,” said Dad. “It is because of that dog. Ask him.”
That night, after Mom and Dad had gone to bed, Harry quietly went downstairs and set up a clever trap for the cookie thief. He put new cookies in the jar and left it on the kitchen table. Then he tied a long piece of string around the jar. He tied the other end around his finger. Finally, Harry went into the family room next door, settled down on the sofa, and fell fast asleep.
A few hours later, Harry felt a tug on his finger. He secretly went into the kitchen. A dark figure was munching a cookie. The cookie thief was…
“Got you!” said Harry. But Dad didn’t seem to hear him. He was still fast asleep.
“I had a funny dream last night,” said Dad, the next morning. Mom and Harry said nothing. They just looked at each other and smiled.

b. Harry interviewed the main suspects.
c. Harry laid a trap to catch the thief.

A. d-e-b-a-c B. a-d-b-e-c C. d-a-e-b-c D. a-d-e-c-b
38. Why was the dog one of the suspects?
A. The dog had crumbs on its fur.

B. Dad thought the dog was wrong but that wasn’t the case.

One night, after another frustrating attempt to sleep, Andy decided to call home. He dialed his mom’s number, and soon he heard her comforting voice. “Hi, honey! Can I join you guys?” he asked. “Sure!” one of the boys said. “We’re just talking about the soccer team. Do you play?” “I do! I used to play at my old school,” Andy replied, feeling a bit more hopeful. “Great! We have practice after school today. You should come,” another boy suggested.
Andy agreed, and after school, he headed to the soccer field. He was nervous at first, but soon he was running, kicking and laughing with his new teammates. For the first time since he arrived at the dorm (宿舍), he felt like he belonged.

29 Some people seem to be dreaming all night because ______.
A. each dream lasts about 90 minutes
B. their bodies need more time to repair
C. rapid eye movement causes tiredness
D. REM sleep time increases during the night
30. Tom’s mother is gently leading her son back to his own bed. He might go to sleep again and not remember anything the next morning. Now Tom is in ______.

【答案】33. D 34. A 35. B 36. B

It might help you feel more at home.” Andy wasn’t sure how making friends would help him sleep, but he followed his mom’s advice. The next day, he decided to give it a try.
During lunch, he noticed a group of kids talking about soccer. Andy loved soccer, so he gathered his courage and walked over. “Hi, I’m Andy.
