His mother just nodded silently, knowing no member of their family had ever owned a business. Years passed, but Wilson’s dream did not. After high school, Wilson joined the army, where his goal of one day owning a family restaurant began to take shape. He signed up for the food service school there and he became such an excellent cook that he was promoted to the officers’ dining hall. After he left the army at 28, he worked as a police officer for the following fifteen years. When he felt he was in need of the business skills for his business, he took business classes at night in his off-hours. “I also saved every cent I earned as a police officer,” he recalled. “For ten years, I didn’t spend one cent — there were no movies, no vacations, and no trips.” By 2013, with enough savings, Wilson decided to make his dream a reality. To protect your account, repost this warning #KeepMyAccountSafe#.” Every few months, it happens again — a dozen of such annoying posts from my kids and their friends suddenly start to appear on my Instagram. According to a new study by Stanford University, most kids don’t know what news is fake (假的). Researchers asked more than 7,800 middle school and high school students to complete 56 tasks, like telling the difference between an advertisement and a real news story on a website and determining which blog in a series was most reliable. Surprisingly, they found that students judged the credibility (可信性) of blogs based not on the source of the material, but on how much detail they contained, or whether a large photo was attached. “Many people assume that because young people are fluent in social media, they can recognize fake news, but our work shows the opposite to be true,” wrote lead study author Sam Wineburg, a professor at Stanford’s Graduate School of Education. Both Google and Facebook are now taking steps to control misleading news from making its way on their platforms, but they won’t be able to eliminate it completely. That is why it’s now more important than ever to teach our kids to think critically when it comes to believing various information sources. “In the coming months, we look forward to sharing our assessments and working with educators to create materials that will guide young people in the sea of disinformation they encounter online,” said Wineburg. 8. How does the author introduce the topic of the passage? A. By stating an opinion. B. By conducting a study. C. By explaining a saying. D. By quoting a post. 9. What determines the credibility of online information according to researchers? A. The source of the material. B. The popularity of the website. C. The amount of detail. D. The size of relevant photos. 10. What does the underlined word “eliminate” in paragraph 4 mean? A. Download. B. Update. C. Rate. D. Remove. 11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. Stronger Together: The Internet Changes Our Life B. Be Careful: Kids Are Bad at Identifying Fake News C. Reliable News Has No Place on Social Media D. Educators Have a Long Way to Go to Guide the Young 【答案】8. D 9. A 10. D 11. 根据第一段““Instagram (a social networking app) will cut out many users’ accounts on December 20. To protect your account, repost this warning #KeepMyAccountSafe.” Every few months, it happens again-a dozen of annoying posts from my kids’ friends suddenly start to appear on my Instagram news feed.(“12月20日,社交网络应用Instagram将删除许多用户的账户。为了保护你的账户,请转发这个警告#KeepMyAccountSafe。”每隔几个月,这种情况就会再次发生——孩子们的朋友们发布的十几条烦人的帖子会突然出现在我的Instagram信息流中)”以及第二段中的“According to a new study by Stanford University, most kids don’t know what news is fake( 假的). 根据第二段中“According to a new study by Stanford University, most kids don’t know what news is false.(根据斯坦福大学的一项新研究,大多数孩子不知道什么新闻是假的)”和“They found that students judged the credibility of blogs based not on the source of the material, but on how much detail they contained, or whether a large photo was attached.(他们发现,学生们判断博客的可信度不是基于材料的来源,而是基于它们包含多少细节,或者是否附有一张大照片)”可知,研究人员认为,大多数孩子不知道什么新闻是假的,是因为他们判断博客的可信度不是基于材料的来源。 故选A。 根据画线词所在句子“Both Google and Facebook are now taking steps to control misleading news from making its way on their platforms, but they won’t be able to eliminate it completely.(谷歌和Facebook现在都在采取措施控制误导性新闻在他们的平台上传播,但他们不可能完全eliminate这些新闻)”可知,but表示转折,说明谷歌和Facebook不可能完全消除这些新闻。 B。 D In a remote part of Ecuador’s Amazon rainforest, river transport is far more common than road travel. Here, boats move along the Wichimi River, a wide channel that snakes through the thick plants, and powering the silent boats is the Ecuadorian sunshine. The boats have been provided by Kara Solar, a non-profit organization based in the region. The Achuar here are responsible for fixing, running and maintaining the boats — the solar boats are shaping daily life for the community by offering transport for education, health services and eco-tourism. For years, many Achuar have used gasoline-powered boats on the river, but the oil must be flown in by plane from Ecuador’ s capital, Quito, making it more expensive and adding to the carbon emissions (碳排放) connected with its use. “Gasoline motors use a lot of oil and pollute the river,” said Angel Wasump, Kara Solar’s director of operations and a member of the Achuar community. “Since the solar boats arrived, families have been giving up these motors completely,” he added. Formally launched in 2018, Kara Solar is staffed by members of the Achua r community. According to the organization, the boats operating in Ecuador have completed over 300 trips in total, carrying over 1,000 passengers and traveling over 450 kilometers per month. The most common uses are transporting local children to and from school and providing wildlife tours for eco-tourists. As well as reducing carbon emissions and pollution, the silent boats mean eco-tourists can get a closer view of wildlife without scaring it away. “The boat serves as a symbol of what eco-friendliness could look like,” said Wasump. “It’s like a return to what’s most important in Achuar culture. These boats have represented a way for us to reconnect with this vision of what development could look like.” 12. What can we learn about the Achuar from the first two paragraphs? A. They mostly earn their living by fishing. B. They depend much on boats in their lives. C. They are enthusiastic about voluntary work. D. They have little contact with the outside world. 13. What is a reason for the introduction of the solar boats? A. They travel faster. B. They are easy to operate. C. They are cost-effective. D. They carry more passengers. 14. What is paragraph 4 mainly about? A. The features of the solar boats. B. The applications of the solar boats. C. The effects of the solar boats on people’s lives. D. The advantages of the solar boats over traditional ones. 15. What does Wasump intend to stress in the last paragraph? A. Cultural difference. B. Community spirit. C. Environmental awareness. D. Technological development. 12. B 13. C 14. B 15. I was dying to buy an album by my favourite band. However, the pocket money my parents gave me was just enough to get by. I didn’t have any extra money to buy the album (音乐专辑), which made me disappointed. Luckily, I found that there were many opportunities for part-time work in my neighbourhood. There were so many old people who needed help. So, in order to buy the album I wanted, I decided to find a part-time job to earn money. I chose the oldest person I knew, Mrs. Hudson, who was over eighty years old, and could not tend her garden anymore. She had flowers, a grass lawn, and some tomato plants. I knocked on her door, trying to build up enough courage to ask her for work. Fortunately, she answered that she indeed needed help in her garden. That was a really hot summer day. My first job was to pull out weeds. I got down on my knees and began to pull them out one by one. The task was tiring and boring, and I soon became really tired. However, thinking of the album I wanted, I gathered all my energy and kept moving. “If only I had a portable electric fan (便携式电风扇)!” I said to myself, wiping the sweat from my face. After several hours of hard work, I was paid ten dollars. It was less than I thought, but it was enough for the album. After getting that ten dollars, I couldn’t wait to go to the supermarket to buy my favourite album. I believed it would be a memorable moment when I was able to buy what I liked through my efforts. On the way to the supermarket, I was singing a song excitedly when I happened to see my mother who was working on the opposite side of the road. Actually, I had never seen how she worked before; I just knew she was a saleswoman. Paragraph 1: My mother was handing out leaflets (传单) to passers-by. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: I continued making my way to the supermarket. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Paragraph 1: My mother was handing out leaflets to passers-by. Under the burning sun, her T-shirt was damp with sweat. She would give a leaflet to everyone that passed by, with an eager smile on her face. Some people just walked right past her while some others would refuse by waving their hands. There were also some people who would accept the leaflet politely but throw it into a garbage can right away. Seeing that scene, I couldn’t help but feel bad. I never considered my mother’s work to be so hard. Paragraph 2: I continued making my way to the supermarket. However, when I found the album I had been longing for, my mother’s sweaty face came to my mind and I hesitated. I gave up buying the album and bought a portable electric fan instead. Then I returned to the place where my mother worked. She was obviously surprised to see me standing in front of her. When I took out the fan, telling her that it was for her, she was moved to tears and then broke into a happy smile. It was when I saw a big smile on her face that I understood the true value of money. 词汇激活 行为类 ①经过:passed by/go by ②返回:returned/go back ③拒绝:refuse politely/shake his head/decline 情绪类 ①惊讶:surprised/shocked/amazed/astonished ②感动:moved/touched 【点睛】[高分句型1]. B When Wilson was 10 years old, he promised his mother that one day she would never again have to wash other people’s clothes for a living and he was going to start his own business and support her. He opened his first restaurant. However, the first few months were a failure. Wilson quickly change his business strategy and once a week he offered his employees (雇员) classes in customer service and management. He encouraged them to develop personal and professional goals. He always stressed that the faster and more efficiently the employees served the customers, the more profitable that way would be. Today, Wilson owns nine restaurants and employs over four hundred people. In the community, Wilson funded athletic teams and scholarships (奖学金) to get kids off the streets and into community centers and schools. Then his restaurants became profitable, earning much more than before. More importantly, Wilson paved the way for thousands of ordinary young people who are working to make their dreams a reality, helping their communities, and serving up hope. 4. Why did Wilson want to start his own business at first? A. To become a great cook. B. To help his mother economically. C. To cheer his mother up. D. To set an example for his family. 5. What did Wilson focus on besides his major work in his 30s? A. Plans for realizing his dream. B. Setting up business schools. C. Preparations for enjoying life. D. Working as a police officer. 6. How did Wilson improve his restaurant after it failed? A. By increasing the number of his employees. B. By cutting down the profits of his restaurant. C. By offering his workers professional training. D. By meeting customers’ needs as much as possible. 7. Which of the following can best describe Wilson? A. Easy-going and honest. B. Self-centered and curious. C. Warm-hearted and wise. D. Strong-willed and helpful. C “Instagram (a social networking app) will cut out many users’ accounts on December 20. 8 How does the author introduce the topic of the passage? Educators Have a Long Way to Go to Guide the Young D In a remote part of Ecuador’s Amazon rainforest, river transport is far more common than road travel. A. I was dying to buy an album by my favourite band. However, the pocket money my parents gave me was just enough to get by. I didn’t have any extra money to buy the album (音乐专辑), which made me disappointed. Luckily I found that there were many opportunities for part-time work in my neighbourhood.
