(24-25高一上·吉林白城·期中)This was my first trip to Cyprus with my husband John. I was 1 by the friendly Cypriot locals and the scenery that appeared at every corner of our turn. We chose to stop for 2 at a beachfront restaurant on Governor’s Beach.
Slowly, our 3 was filled with colorful collages (拼贴画) of fresh salads and seafood. Every time Nikog, the waiter, 4 us, I looked up and said “thank you”.
“Why do you English always say ‘thank you’?” Nikog 5 . “Too much ‘thank you’ and ‘please’”. He looked at me as if 6 an explanation.
I smiled, wanting to make a connection and share a sincere 7 exchange, “We think it’s polite to recognize the work you do. It’s a way to 8 appreciation.”
“But it’s my 9 ! Why do you keep saying ‘thank you’? Not necessary!” He shrugged (耸肩) his shoulders and threw up his hands.
John and I looked at each other and burst out laughing!

(22-23高一下·青海西宁·开学考试)I thought I knew a lot about Hamlet. I had been always full of 1 about it before I saw The Revenge of Prince Zidan-the Peking Opera version of Hamlet. 2 an orchestra playing traditional Chinese instruments, the opera brought a 3 new sound to my Western ears. At first, I thought what I 4 was a violin, 5 later I learnt that it was an instrument with two strings called jinghu. Then, I was 6 when the main characters came on 7 . The costumes and masks were amazing. Although the performers sang in Chinese, the music, exaggerated movements and mime helped get the 8 across to the audience. The voices sounded really 9 . So 10 were some of the female voices that I was sure they could break glass! And the stage was really 11 : a decorated whip represented a horse, and a screen with Chinese character, a study. Using such techniques, the opera had transformed a small stage into the whole universe. What I liked most was how the characters moved on stage. It was so dazzling and 12 that I wasn’t sure if the characters were performers or athletes! Everyone was 13 . Feeling the strong emotions of love, anger, fear and grief in the 14 , I could easily 15 the theme of Hamlet.

(23-24高一上·上海·期末)Pasta: Loved the World Over
What is the world’s favorite when it comes to food? According to a global survey by the U.K. based charity Oxfam, pasta is number one, ahead of meat, rice and pizza. 1 being popular in European countries, pasta is one of the favorites in countries such as the Philippines, Brazil and South Africa.

So how did the dish so closely 4 ltaly become a staple of so many tables around the globe?
It’s because it is cheap, versatile and convenient, says Jim Winship from the U.K.-based Pizza, Pasta and ltalian Food Association. A sauce to go with it can be made from simple 5 .
“You can create lots of 6 dishes with it. It tastes good and it’s filling. It also has a long shelf life, so you can keep it in the larder (食品储藏室) 7 you need to put a meal together.”
But that’s only part of its success. Pasta is also relatively easy to 8 and transport around the world, making it a popular product with 9 as well.
“It’s always been a(n) 10 product,” says John Dickie, professor in Italian Studies at University College London and author of Delizia! A History of the ltalians and Their Food. “It is 11 one of the things that have contributed to its success — it’s easy to transport and has a long shelf life. It has 12 genes.”
Tim Lang, professor of food policy at City University London, says technological advances in the 19 century 13 pasta to be produced on a big scale. But the Industrial Revolution did that for everything else, he adds, and the reason pasta had been 14 successful was because people liked it and the ltalian way of life.
“It’s a(n) 15 phenomenon, not an industrial phenomenon,” he says. “People like the ltalian way of life and their simple staple foods.”
