Long ago, horses were wild animals. People hunted them for food. Later, they started
catching and raising horses. This was the beginning of domestication(驯化).
As people domesticated and rode horses, they chose to keep those with better qualities
For example, they kept some of the horses for riding and strong ones for pulling heavy
things. These qualities are partly based on the horses' nature. When domesticated horses had
babies, these qualities were passed on. Each new generation of horses became more like what
people wanted.
Today, horses come in many shapes and sizes. The Shetland horse is very small, with
short, strong legs. It was raised to pull coal along narrow roads. The Clydesdale is a huge
horse. It was raised to pull heavy vehicles(车辆).
Domesticating horses changed human life a lot. Horses helped with farming and this
made farming work easier. Before horses, people had to walk everywhere. Riding horses let
them travel much farther and faster. This helped different groups of people meet and share
their cultures. Horses played a big role in shaping the world we live in today.

One time in Shanghai, we had lunch at the top of the Shanghai World Financial (金融)
Center. There was a revolving(旋转的) restaurant called "Skyline". The idea of eating in a
moving restaurant made me nervous but excited. We took a fast lift to the top. As the lift
went up, my heart raced. I felt very scared but I didn't want to show it.
"Are you OK?"Dad asked.
"Sure, I'll be fine,"I replied, trying to sound brave.
As the lift moved, the city below got smaller. It was like a huge map being opened up. I
closed my eyes, but curiosity got the better of me. I looked up at the wide blue sky. It was
amazing.
When the lift stopped, we sat by a window in the restaurant. The view was amazing,
too. The buildings turned slowly, and the view of the city changed little by little. I started to
relax and even enjoyed the movement. The sun shone brightly and covered the city with a
