My uncle George lives in a home with a few other people like him. He enjoys a simple life—no smartphones, no Internet—so communication is limited to in-person visits and old fashioned landline phone calls.
Uncle George and I have always shared a special bond. When I was around 5, I asked my parents what was wrong with him. They explained that nothing was “wrong” exactly, but that he was mentally disabled. Back then, George would often ask for my phone number, write it down, call me a few times, and then stop when he lost the paper. This continued for years until, about six years ago, he memorized my number. Since then, he calls me 10 times a day, every day, from 7 a. m. to 7 p. m. I answer about two calls a day.
Our calls always follow the same pattern, with George creating one of three imaginary scenes. In one, he’s my dad, scolding me for cursing (咒骂). In another, he’s Major Charles Winchester from the TV show MASH, and I’m Captain B. J. Hunnicutt. In the last, we’re courageous lifeguards planning to save a drowning person. We play our roles for about a minute, then laugh. Afterward, he says, “You know something, Tommy? I’m just calling to say you’re the best guy I know.” I reply, “So are you. The two of us!” He then asks about my dinner or if I’m watching a game, and promises to call back at a specific time (though he always calls earlier).
These calls have been a constant in my life for years. No matter what’s happening—breakups, work problems, or stress—I can always count on George’s calls to make me laugh and feel like a kid again. Because George doesn’t understand adult life, he can’t fully grasp my struggles, but he always brings the same love and energy. His unwavering support is a gift that saves me, just a little, every day.
4. What is the main way Uncle George communicates with the author?
A. Through text messages. B. By using a landline.
C. Through social media. D. By visiting frequently.
5. What can we infer from the second paragraph?
A. Nothing was wrong with George. B. The author rarely talks to George.
C. The author calls back George twice a day. D. George struggles with remembering things.
6. What do Uncle George and the author pretend to be?
A. Distant relatives. B. A major and a citizen.
C. Two fearless lifeguards. D. A captain and a soldier.
7. How does Uncle George’s support affect the author?
A. It saves the author’s life. B. It helps the author feel loved.
C. It makes the author feel like an adult. D. It makes the author reliable and energetic.
【答案】4. B 5. D 6. C 7. B

C
Freedom generally refers to the ability to act speak, think, or live without unreasonable limitation, yet its definition and ranges are often debated. The 20th-century philosopher Isaiah Berlin distinguished between “negative freedom” and “positive freedom”. Let’s take Steve for example, who is sitting with a glass of wine in front of him. No one is holding a gun to his head, telling him to drink. He is free to do as he pleases. But Steve is an alcoholic. He knows it’s bad for him, but he can’t help himself. He stretches out his trembling hand and lifts the glass to his lips. Two very different kinds of freedom are at play here.
We often think of freedom as the absence of external restriction: you are free so long as there is nothing preventing you from doing what you want. This is what Berlin calls “negative freedom”; it is negative in that it is defined by what is absent — any form of limit or outside disturbance. In this sense Steve, the drinker, is completely free. But Steve can’t help himself. He is forced to drink, even though he knows his interests would be better served by not doing so. He is not fully in control of himself and his fortune is not fully in his own hands. To the extent that he is driven to drink, he has no choice and is not free.
While negative freedom is freedom from external interference (干涉), positive freedom is usually described as freedom to achieve certain ends; as a form of empowerment that allows an individual to realize his or her potential, to achieve a particular vision of self-realization and to reach a state of self-mastery.
To return to Steve: the part of him that properly understands his best interests is assumed to be the higher, more reasonable self. If he is incapable himself of encouraging this part to succeed, perhaps he needs some outside help — from people who are wiser than he and better able to see how he should act.
8. Why does the author mention Steve’s story in paragraph 1?
A. To criticize alcoholics for lacking self-discipline.
B. To clarify Berlin’s understanding of personal interests.
C. To show coexistence of two different sorts of freedom.
D. To argue the necessity of external restrictions for freedom.
9. What does the underlined phrase “external restriction” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Interests of one’s own. B. Personal preference.
C. Limits from outside forces. D. A state of self-control.
10. What is “positive freedom” in Berlin’s philosophy?
A. Freedom without any limitations. B. Freedom to ignore personal interests.
C. Freedom to behave without thinking. D. Freedom to act in line with one’s reason.
11. How could Steve possibly achieve positive freedom according to the last paragraph?
A. By asking for outside guidance. B. By understanding his interests better.
C. By setting higher standards for himself. D. By getting more reason to control himself.
【答案】8. C 9. C 10. D 11. A

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了20世纪哲学家以赛亚・伯林区分的“消极自由”和“积极自由”,并通过史蒂夫的例子来阐述这两种自由的概念。
【8题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段最后一句“Two very different kinds of freedom are at play here. (两种截然不同的自由在这里起作用。)”以及后文对消极自由和积极自由的详细阐述可知,作者提到史蒂夫的故事是为了展示两种不同类型的自由的共存。故选C项。
【9题详解】
词义猜测题。根据划线词后面的“you are free so long as there is nothing preventing you from doing what you want. This is what Berlin calls “negative freedom”; it is negative in that it is defined by what is absent — any form of limit or outside disturbance. (只要没有什么能阻止你做你想做的事,你就是自由的。这就是伯林所说的“消极自由”;它是消极的,因为它是由不存在的东西定义的 —— 任何形式的限制或外部干扰。)”可知,“external restriction”指的是来自外部力量的限制。故选C项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“While negative freedom is freedom from external interference (干涉), positive freedom is usually described as freedom to achieve certain ends; as a form of empowerment that allows an individual to realize his or her potential, to achieve a particular vision of self-realization and to reach a state of self-mastery. (虽然消极自由是不受外部干涉的自由,但积极自由通常被描述为实现某些目标的自由;作为一种赋予个人权力的形式,使个人能够实现自己的潜力,实现自我实现的特定愿景,并达到自我掌控的状态。)”可知,在伯林的哲学中,“积极自由”是按照自己的理性行动的自由。故选D项。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“To return to Steve: the part of him that properly understands his best interests is assumed to be the higher, more reasonable self. If he is incapable himself of encouraging this part to succeed, perhaps he needs some outside help — from people who are wiser than he and better able to see how he should act. (回到史蒂夫的例子:他身上正确理解自己最大利益的那部分被认为是更高层次、更理性的自我。如果他自己无法促使这部分成功,也许他需要一些外部帮助 —— 来自比他更聪明、更能看清他应该如何行动的人。)”可知,史蒂夫可能通过寻求外部指导来实现积极自由。故选A项。

NASA’s Lunar Third Generation Partnership (3GPP) is researching how to bring wireless technologies to the Moon, but significant challenges remain. Extreme temperatures and radiation can damage commercial-grade electronics, and adapting complex 4G and 5G systems for the lunar surface is a major undertaking. “We still have much to learn about the lunar surface radio frequency propagation (传播) environment,” says Raymond Wagner, principal investigator of the Lunar 3GPP project. Once operational, these systems will allow astronauts to communicate reliably with rovers, instruments, and crew members, while efficiently transmitting data back to Earth through a single link.
To address these challenges, NASA is developing relay satellites as part of its Lunar Communications Relay and Navigation Systems project. The European Space Agency (ESA), a key Artemis mission partner, is also contributing through its Moonlight programme. ESA plans to create a network of three or four communications and data-relay satellites, similar to Earth’s GPS. The first step is the Lunar Pathfinder mission in 2025, which will test the necessary technology. ESA’s navigation payload will be onboard, and NASA will share instruments and access lunar relay services. By combining these efforts with radio ranging, the project will gather location data to explore how a Moonlight-like navigation system could be carried out, laying the groundwork for a future lunar project.
Wagner highlights the rapid advancements in mobile communications on Earth over the past two decades and expresses optimism about bringing similar technologies to the Moon. “If we reliably deploy (利用) those same conveniences to the Moon, we’ll be in great shape,” he says. “These efforts aim to create a strong communication network to support safer and more efficient lunar missions, paving the way for future exploration and potential settlements.”
In summary, NASA and ESA are developing relay satellites and testing new technologies to overcome lunar communication challenges. Projects like Lunar Pathfinder and Moonlight aim to establish a reliable network for astronauts and equipment, enabling efficient data transmission and navigation. As Wagner notes, advancements in Earth’s mobile communications serve as a model for lunar systems, bringing us closer to safer, more efficient, and better-connected lunar missions.
12. What challenges does the 3GPP project face?
A. Lack of electronics. B. Extreme lunar conditions.
C. Complexity of 5G systems. D. Unstable radio signals.
13. What is ESA’s plan in the lunar project?
A. Sharing devices with NASA. B. Developing Earth’s GPS systems.
C. Creating satellite networks. D. Achieving Artemis mission goals.
14. What is Wagner’s attitude toward lunar communication systems?
A. Optimistic. B. Negative. C. Doubtful. D. Indifferent.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Talking On The Moon. B. Starting Lunar Exploration.
C. Building Relay Satellites. D. Testing Communicative Tech.
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. A 15. A

McCall,64, spent the night in a hotel in the tiny town of Cleveland, Tennessee. The retired electrician was driving from Florida to Michigan to visit a sick relative. Her budget was tight, and her head was full of questions. In the previous two years, McCall had lost her husband to cancer, and their 21-year-old grandson to violence. And a workplace accident had left McCall partially disabled and unable to work.
“I’m still looking for a place in the world,” says McCall. “I was married for almost 43years. I’m not sure where I’m supposed to be.” But even as everything changed around her, the future held one certainty: She’d have her two cats, Tucker and a 20-pound cat that she calls Fat Cat. The companionship and the routine of having to care for the animals were a lifeline when all else was turned upside down. “Honestly, after all the deaths, I was ready to give up,” says McCall. “If it hadn’t been for those two cats, I don’t think I would’ve made it.”
McCall planned to spend the night in Cleveland and drive on. But Tucker had other ideas. When McCall returned from breakfast the next morning, ready to pack up and hit the road again, the big black and white cat was gone from her hotel room. Panicked, she searched along the busy road for hours, hoping Tucker hadn’t been hit by a car. But he was nowhere to be found. As night fell, McCall realized she had to go. She could not afford to stay another night. Heartbroken, she got in her car and got back on the road.
“I’ d just been through all this tragedy. And now I’d lost Tucker,” she recalled. “We drove off with Fat Cat, crying all the way. Where’s my dear Tucker? I thought he was gone forever.”
The next day, Lillard, 27, went to wash the back windows of her shop, just down the road from the hotel where McCall had stayed.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Suddenly, Lillard noticed some noises coming from the dustbin. Curious, she approached it and peered inside. To her surprise, there was a big black and white cat, looking scared and weak. It was Tucker! He had apparently been trapped in the dustbin all night. Lillard felt a pang of pity for the poor creature. She carefully reached in and gently lifted Tucker out. The cat, though a bit shaken, seemed to recognize that he was being rescued. Lillard decided she had to find its owner. She checked Tucker’s collar and found a tag with a phone number on it. Without hesitation, she called the number.
On hearing Tucker’s voice on the phone, McCall couldn’t contain her excitement. Her heart leaped with joy. “Is that really you, Tucker?” she cried out, tears streaming down her face. She had been in such despair after losing him, thinking she’d never see her beloved cat again. Lillard explained how she had found Tucker and assured McCall that he was safe. McCall was over the moon. She thanked Lillard over and over again, her voice filled with gratitude. “You don’t know what this means to me,” she said. “Tucker is like family to me. I can’t thank you enough.” She quickly made arrangements to turn back and pick up Tucker. When she finally held Tucker in her arms again, it was as if a huge weight had been lifted off her shoulders.

Everyone loves a good party, but King’s Day in Amsterdam is the biggest of them all! So, what’s happening in the Dutch capital on April 27?
What is King’s Day?
King’s Day celebrates the current ruling monarch’s (君主) birthday. In this case, the entire Netherlands throws a huge birthday party for King Willem-Alexander, whose birthday is on April 27. There will be plenty of music and festivities through the night and into King’s Day. Amsterdam is well known for its open stages throughout all its neighbourhoods.
Travelling during King’s Day in Amsterdam
The local government closes most of Amsterdam’s city centre to traffic on April 27, but you’ll be able to walk or bike around the city as usual. Buses, metros, and trams will also be running throughout King’s Day in Amsterdam, some on different routes and timetables, which you can check on GVB. You can still access the city by car through a few open roads, and parking is free.
Flea markets on King’s Day in Amsterdam
The local government will allow flea markets across the city. Anyone can settle down anywhere in the city and sell all their unwanted goods from 6 a. m. to 8 p. m., except in Dam Square. You won’t be allowed to purchase more than one serving of wine at a time between 6 a. m. and 12 a. m. during King’s Day.

C
Freedom generally refers to the ability to act, speak, think, or live without unreasonable limitation, yet its definition and ranges are often debated.

A Lack of electronics. B. Extreme lunar conditions.
C. Complexity of 5G systems. D. Unstable radio signals.
13. What is ESA’s plan in the lunar project?
A. Sharing devices with NASA. B. Developing Earth’s GPS systems.
C. Creating satellite networks. D. Achieving Artemis mission goals.
14. What is Wagner’s attitude toward lunar communication systems?
A. Optimistic. B. Negative. C. Doubtful. D. Indifferent.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Talking On The Moon. B. Starting Lunar Exploration.
C. Building Relay Satellites. D. Testing Communicative Tech.

I keep a list of things that are underappreciated, and in the sports and games category, one stands above all others: Ping-Pong. Studies have shown that it requires rapid-fire decision-making that activates diverse regions of the brain and increases blood flow. It also helps develop new neural (神经的) pathways that can relieve depression and slow down dementia. ___16___
For one thing, the game is decidedly an equal-opportunity activity. Age, sex and physical condition matter little. ___17___ Whether you’re young or old, tall or short, slim or not-so-slim, everyone has a shot at glory. For example, Marty Reisman, a legendary American player, was winning medals at national championships in his second decade, as well as his seventh.
___18___ If you can’t find a Ping-Pong bat in your storage room, an acceptably good one can be bought for about $20, or a set of four, with net and balls thrown in, for less than $50. The game can be played on any table of reasonable size. ___19___ Chuang Chiafu, one of China’s first great players, sharpened his skills on the front door of his family’s home, which he would take off the door every morning and replace at the end of the day.
Ping-Pong is an open and easy-to-start activity that benefits players both physically and mentally. With simple equipment and rules, this sport is a hidden diamond for personal and community well-being. ___20___
A. In a difficult situation, you don’t even need a table.
B. In conclusion, we can enjoy great benefits from playing it.
C. But what truly sets Ping-Pong apart is its openness to all people.
D. Ping-Pong is not just a hobby but a good way to experience life.
E. For another thing, perhaps no sport has lower cost to participate in.
F. Why not give it a go and discover the potential in table tennis for yourself?
G. Instead, individuals of different fitness levels can compete equally in this activity.
