It collects beautiful photos of cats. C. It offers a great many cat videos. D. It enables people to adopt various pets. B I come from a broken family. After we grew up, my sister and I could go years without speaking. And that is where this story begins. My sister Jeanne and I were born only 14 months apart, but by the time we were teenagers we had lost touch. By age 19, I had moved away from our home in Wisconsin to live on my father’ s horse farm in Virginia. Jeanne got married at 18, moved to Chicago. We lived separate lives, and our connection somehow ended. Fast-forward about five years. I was 24 and on a trip with my fiancé to New York City, a place I had never been. During a day of sightseeing, we were crossing a very busy street loaded with people. Everyone was in a hurry. I had laughed at something my fiancé said, and I suddenly heard my name yelled from somewhere behind me, “Cheryl!” I froze in my steps in the middle of the road. Tears welled up in my eyes. I knew without a doubt that it was my sister Jeanne. I yelled back before even turning to look, “Jeanne?” It was her. I began pushing people out of my way to get to her. The crowd started to part—even by New York standards, we must have seemed crazy. And there we were, standing in the middle of a Manhattan street, facing each other and smiling. I couldn’t believe it. I later asked how she’ d known it was me—she never saw me! She said it was my laugh. I wouldn’t say my laugh is all that unusual, but I guess to a family member it’ s infectious. It hits your heart and goes deep in your mind. Since that time, my sister and I have never been separated. We both moved back to Wisconsin. We talk daily. Many years have passed, and we are now in our 50s. I truly believe God played a huge part in bringing us together. But our meeting by chance wasn’t just a sign. I see it as more of a lesson, a reminder not to lose touch with loved ones. It is too easy to remain lost. After our sister-to-sister miracle, I don’ t plan to let that happen again. 4. What can we learn about Cheryl in the first two paragraphs? A. She got on well with her sister. B. She came from a normal family. C. She moved to Chicago with Jeanne. D. She was brought up in Wisconsin. 5. In the author’s eyes, why could her sister recognize her laugh? A. Because the street was quiet enough. B. Because it had some particular features. C. Because it stayed in her sister’s memory. D. Because they were apart for only 14 months. 6. What does the underlined word “that” in the last paragraph refer to? A. Meeting B. Separation C. The trip D. The miracle 7. What can be the best title for the text? A. Life-long Journey B. Long-lost Sisters C. New-found Families D. Long-standing Friendship C What is the most powerful word in the English language? The. It's everywhere. We use it in English without always noticing or appreciating it. It's not much to look at. It isn't descriptive, emotive or inspiring. Technically, it's meaningless. And yet this dull and harmless-seeming word could be one of the most powerful words in the English language. “The” tops the lists of most frequently used words in English, accounting for 5% of every 100 words used. But why is this? The answer is two-fold. The principle of least effort plays a major part. So people use it a lot. At the same time, “the” lies at the heart of English grammar, having a function rather than a meaning. Words' are split into two categories: expressions with a semantic (语义的) meaning and functional words like “the”, “to”, “for”, with a job to do. Although “the” has no meaning in itself, “it seems to be able to do things in subtle and miraculous ways,” says Michael Rosen, poet and author. Consider the difference between “he scored a goal” and “he scored the goal”. The inclusion of “the” immediately signals something important about that goal. Perhaps it was the only one of the match? Or maybe it helped a team win the championship? Context very often determines sense. This simplest of words can be used for dramatic effect. At the start of Hamlet, a guard’s utterance of “Long live the King” is soon followed by the ghost: “Looks it not like the King?” Who, the audience may wonder, does “the” refer to? The living King or a dead King? This kind of confusion is the kind of “trick” that writers use to make us surprised and amused, a bit uneasy even. “‘The’ is doing a lot of work here,” says Rosen. 8. Which of the following describes the word “the” correctly? A. It is often overlooked. B. It is useless in practice. C. It is dull and descriptive. D. It is in every English sentence. 9. The word “the” is frequently used because it is _____. A. brief and functional B. popular and unique C. effective and emotive D. meaningful and expressive 10. What does the example in Paragraph 3 imply? A. “A” is not as important as “the”. B. It's impossible to understand a single sentence. C. Words should be understood in the context. D. Some words have a clearer meaning than others. 11. Why did the writer of the play stress “the” in “Looks it not like the King”? A. To show his confusion. B. To add drama to the scene. C. To repeat the guard's words. D. To help the audience understand. D Our suits have four layers: thermal underwear on the inside, followed by an electrically heated bodysuit, a thick wool coat, and a half-inch-thick layer of rubber outerwear. There're two layers of hoods, waterproof gloves and 35 pounds of weights. There are two batteries for the heated bodysuit, a backup gas container, and finally, my photography equipment. We look like astronauts minus the helmets. When we finally dive into the freezing water, we're wearing 200 pounds each. The cold quickly numbs the few square inches of exposed skin on our cheeks, and as the dive goes on, it spreads into our suits and gloves, biting even harder. It’ s almost unbearable. Toward the end, as we're pausing on our way up to let the pressure drop, we search for anything to distract us from the pain. When we finally drag ourselves out of the freezing ocean, I lie face down on the ice, my brain dulled, my skin hard and wrinkled, my lips, hands, and feet swollen and unconscious—then, as my body warms and the blood starts to flow (again), the intense pain is at its worst. What could possibly make this worthwhile? The sight! Only a few species of seals, penguins, and other birds live in East Antarctica, and no land mammals at all. Below, it’s a rich garden. Antarctic marine life has been largely isolated from the rest of the planet for millions of years, ever since the continent separated from the other continents and froze over. Since then the powerful Antarctic Circumpolar Current has surrounded Antarctica from west to east, creating a sharp change in temperature that prevents the spread of marine animals. The long isolation has allowed a surprising diversity of species, unique to the region, to evolve on the seafloor. The waters under Antarctic ice are like Mount Qomolangma: magical, but extremely unfriendly. Nothing short of full commitment gets you anywhere. The demand is too great. But that's what makes the images you see here so breathtaking, and the experience of having photographed them and of having seen this place so unforgettable. 12. What does the author intend to tell us in Paragraph 1? A. How fully prepared the divers are. B. How entertaining a diver appears to be. C. How advanced modern technologies are. D. How heavy the astronauts' equipment is. 13. The divers suffer the greatest pain when they ______. A dive into the water B. begin to resurface C. reach the deepest spot D. regain consciousness 14. What do we know about marine species in Antarctica? A. They can be found elsewhere on the planet. B. They have unimpressive biological diversity. C. They experience sharp changes in temperature. D. They live relatively independently geographically. 15. What makes the diving experience in Antarctica so worthwhile? A. The amazing scenery and pictures taken. B. The divers' devotion to the tough task. C. The long-standing reputation of Antarctica. D. The challenging circumstances of the diving. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Swimming, cycling, jogging, skiing, dancing, walking or any of dozens of other activities can help your heart. ___16___ Whether it is a structured exercise program or just part of your daily routine, all exercise adds up to having a healthier heart. A. Meeting B. Separation C The trip D. The miracle 7. What can be the best title for the text? A. Life-long Journey B. Long-lost Sisters C. New-found Families D. Long-standing Friendship 【答案】4. D 5. C 6. B 7. B 【解析】 【分析】这是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了年幼分离的姐妹重聚的故事。 【4题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第二段“By age 19, I had moved away from our home in Wisconsin to live on my father’ s horse farm in Virginia.( 19岁时,我从威斯康辛州的家搬到了我父亲在弗吉尼亚州的马场。)”可知,Cheryl在威斯康星州长大。故选D。 【5题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章倒数第二段“I later asked how she’ d known it was me—she never saw me! She said it was my laugh. I wouldn’t say my laugh is all that unusual, but I guess to a family member it’ s infectious. A brief and functional B. popular and unique C. effective and emotive D. meaningful and expressive 10. 【答案】8. A 9. A 10. C 11. B 【解析】 【分析】本文属于说明文。文章讲述了英语中不可或缺的“the” 的作用以及使用效果。 【8题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段“We use it in English without always noticing or appreciating it.”可知,我们在不经意间经常使用the这个词,也没有好好欣赏这个词。由此可知,这个词经常被人们忽视,没有重视这个词,故选A。 【9题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段“The principle of least effort plays a major part. So people use it a lot. At the same time, “the” lies at the heart of English grammar, having a function rather than a meaning.”可知,最少努力的原则起了重要作用。所以人们经常使用它。与此同时,“the”是英语语法的核心,它具有功能而不是意义。由此可知,the这个词有着自己功能性作用。故选A。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“Consider the difference between “he scored a goal” and “he scored the goal”.(想想“他进了一个球”和“他进了这个球”之间的区别)”及最后一句“Context very often determines sense.(语境常常决定单词的含义)”可推知,通过例举the的例子来说明,单词的含义由语境决定。故选C。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“This kind of confusion is the kind of “trick” that writers use to make us surprised and amused, a bit uneasy even. “‘The’ is doing a lot of work here,” says Rosen.(这种困惑是作家用来让我们感到惊讶和有趣,甚至有点不安的“伎俩”。“‘The’在这里做了很多工作,”罗森说)”可推知,剧本的作者在《看起来不像国王》中强调“the”以增加戏剧效果。故选B。 D Our suits have four layers: thermal underwear on the inside, followed by an electrically heated bodysuit, a thick wool coat, and a half-inch-thick layer of rubber outerwear. A. dive into the water B. begin to resurface C. reach the deepest spot D. regain consciousness 14. 【答案】12. A 13. D 14. D 15.
