-Starting out
Who is mentioned in the video? What decisions did he make?
Why did he change his decision?
此处已嵌入课本视频: Unit 1 Starting Out Lu Xun’s Decision.
1.What decisions did he make?
When Lu Xun was 15, traditional Chinese medicine failed to cure his father’s illness, so he made a decision to study Western medicine and became a doctor. But later, he made a decision to abandon his medical studies and take up writing.
2.Why did he change his decision?
Because he realized that people in China were more in need of treatment for their minds than their bodies. The most important thing, in his mind, was to change people’s spirit, and the best way to achieve this was through literature.
Lu Xun (1881-1936) was the pen name of Zhou Shuren, an influential Chinese writer, essayist, and translator who is commonly considered the ‘father of modern Chinese literature.’ Known for his satirical observations of early 20th-century Chinese society, he is celebrated as a pioneer of modern vernacular Chinese literature现代白话文学 and was one of the most important thinkers of his time.
Silence, silence! Unless we burst out, we shall perish in this silence!
Hope cannot be said to exist, nor can it be said not to exist. It is just like roads across the earth. For actually the earth had no roads to begin with, but when many men pass one way, a road is made.
Eyebrows raised, coldly confronting.Accusing fingers of a thousand bullies.
Yet with my head bowed,I’ll be an ox for children.

The Pulitzer Prize is a highly-coveted literary award given to authors for their achievements in music, literature, online journalism, magazine journalism, and newspaper journalism. There are 22 prize categories. The award is named after Joseph Pulitzer, a publishing giant who passed away in 1917 and left instructions for the prize in his will. Today, the awards are given to winners by Columbia University. The Pulitzer Prize Board determines who will win the prizes each year. For many writers, winning a Pulitzer Prize is the ultimate accomplishment in writing and journalism.
