Some people live and love more in twelve years than others do in 100. Jessie Joy Rees was one of those people.
Jessie was an energetic, athletic girl who always had a smile on her face until she was diagnosed (诊断) with a shocking disease. Doctors estimated that she had just 1% chance of survival and less than a year to live. With no other treatment options, her family entered Jessie for a clinical trial (临床试验). For weeks she underwent 30 rounds of radiotherapy (放射治疗). Amazingly, the pain and uncertainty never lessened her shine, and Jessie always remained positive throughout it all.
One day, she learned that many of the sick children in the hospital couldn’t go home, and decided to find a way to help reduce their stress. The next morning, Jessie’s dad, Erik Rees, found his daughter filling paper bags with stickers, toys, artwork, and other fun small things at home. Then he asked the hospital if Jessie could hand them out around the children’s cancer wards (病房). They said yes, as long as they replaced the paper bags with plastic jars (罐). That’s how Jessie’s JoyJars were born!
“JoyJars are plastic jars stuffed with new games, toys, and activities for kids fighting cancer,” said Erik. The jars were named for Jessie, whose middle name was Joy. Sadly, Jessie lost her fight with cancer less than one year after her diagnosis, but she managed to make over 3,000 jars while fighting cancer.
Although Jessie’s gone, her family has continued her work, starting a non-profit organization called NEGU, short for Jessie’s personal motto (座右铭): “Never ever give up.” So far, more than400,000 JoyJars have been delivered to children with cancer. It’s the Rees family’s way to honor their daughter’s kindness.
In 2023, NASCAR team Spire Motorsports announced they were going to provide economic support for NEGU for the year. Spire Motorsports driver Corey LaJoie, as part of Team NEGU, hopes the partnership will raise awareness and help children battling cancer to never ever give up.

Mosquitoes (蚊子) are actually some of the most dangerous creatures on the planet. According to the World Health Organization, mosquitoes cause over 700,000 deaths every year. But there is new hope in the battle between humans and mosquitoes. Scientists at Auburn University may have found the secret to stopping mosquitoes from spreading diseases. “We have created a type of fabric (织物) that could prevent mosquito bites,” says John Beckmann, who led the study.
Beckmann remembered a camping trip during which he had almost been eaten alive by mosquitoes despite wearing a long-sleeved shirt. “People often say, ‘Wear long sleeves,’” said Beckmann. “But long sleeves don’t block mosquitoes.”
While some companies are producing clothes that they say are bite-proof (防叮咬的), the clothes contain some harmful chemicals or are made of thick fabrics that are too hot to wear and are too easy for mosquitoes to overcome. That’s because there are holes in the makeup of their fabrics that mosquitoes and other biting insects can get through.
The key was to discover a fabric that removed these gaps and was still cool enough to wear in hot weather. “That is the reason why this project is not as easy as people think,” Beckmann said.
The team experimented by using a computer numerical control knitting (编织) machine that could be programmed with different patterns until they found a bite-proof one. But the researchers are still not satisfied and will be spending the next year perfecting the comfort aspect of the material and eventually creating a clothing line.
The hope is that finally any type of fabric can be knitted into the lab’s pattern so that all kinds of clothing companies from baby clothing producers to dress designers could create bite-proof clothing.
8. What happened to Beckmann during his camping trip?
A. He was badly bitten by mosquitoes.
B. He discovered a new kind of mosquito.
C. He felt unbearably hot in long-sleeved clothes.
D. He mastered some skills in dealing with mosquitoes.
9. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The popularity of bite-proof clothing.
B. Disadvantages of existing bite-proof clothing.
C. Advancement in bite-proof clothing technology.
D. Comparisons between different types of bite-proof clothes.
10. What do the researchers plan to do next?
A. Work with different clothing companies.
B. Improve the material’s comfort.
C. Sell their fabric worldwide.
D. Produce baby clothes.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Mosquitoes: the silent killers
B. The battle against mosquitoes
C. A step towards a bite-free future
D. Proven ways to prevent mosquito bites
【答案】8. A 9. B 10. B 11. C

The global food waste conundrum continues to grow, but smart tech developed in Australia could solve it significantly, one farm at a time. A new healthy vegetable snack draws on innovation from Australia’s national science agency CSIRO together with start-up Nutri V.
The new Nutri V Goodies snacks contain vegetables, which can’t be sold and would otherwise have gone to waste, often as landfill (填埋的垃圾) or animal feed. Raquel Said, CEO of Nutri V, explained that the company was born from a farming business with enthusiasm for innovation and sustainability (可持续性)。
“Part of growing vegetables can involve ending up with tonnes that don’t meet standards or there’s an oversupply, yet they’re all still perfectly nutritious,” Ms Said explained, “We wanted to create a business to upcycle that waste into a sustainable yet delicious solution, which is what we’ve done with Nutri V Goodies,” she said. “We think they will help Australians increase their vegetable consumption (摄入、消耗) while supporting farmers in reducing waste.”
Nutri V Goodies, which are a convenient option for people to stay on top of their vegetable intake (摄入量), have two servings of vegetables in every pack and have a higher vegetable content and health star rating than other snack foods.
CSIRO’s director of Agriculture and Food Dr Michael Robertson said, vegetable-rich food innovation such as Nutri V Goodies helps farmers add real value to their businesses, while supporting sustainability in the agrifood section. “With CSIRO’s expert knowledge and our world-class food research facilities, we can support the creation of healthy concept products and in the case of Nutri V, developing an innovative process can take it to market,” Dr Robertson said. “CSIRO working together with Nutri V at the forefront of agricultural production is a good example of how research can work with industry.”

第二节 七选五(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
Puppies (小狗) are a lot of fun, but they also take a lot of work. There are many things your puppy needs to grow up well. ____16____ Here are some tips to help you train a puppy so your new pet can be a happy family member.
Socializing
____17____ Puppies that are well-socialized usually become well-adjusted (适应性好的) adults. Many behavior concerns in dogs can come from a lack of proper early socialization, like fear and aggression (攻击). It’s important to get your puppy used to a variety of people, animals, places, and sights so he will not react poorly to them as an adult.
House training
This is one of the first things you will work on with your new puppy. ____18____ Feed him at similar times each day. Take him outside to the potty (便盆) every time he eats, drinks, or wakes up from sleep.
Prevent behavior problems
Start off on the right foot by providing your puppy with lots of interesting toys, exercise, and training. A puppy left to find his own source of entertainment is more likely to behave inappropriately (不恰当地). You can also use basic obedience commands (服从命令) to prevent common dog behavior problems. ____19____ By teaching your puppy appropriate behavior, you can prevent many common behavior problems.
Positive reinforcement (强化)
During training, puppies respond better to positive reinforcement than punishment (惩罚). Punishment may stop unwanted behavior, but it does not tell the puppy what you want him to actually do. It may even lead to behavior issues like fear or aggression. Positive reinforcement makes your puppy want to do more of the things you want him to do. Ignore or redirect your puppy when he misbehaves and reward good behavior. ____20____
A. Soon, your puppy will be offering good behavior.
B. Proper training is one of the most important of these.
C. Your training will be more effective if you’re all having fun.
D. There are dog training classes designed specifically for puppies.

12. What does the underlined word “conundrum” in paragraph I probably mean?
A. Recovery. B. Problem. C. Reduction. D. Collection.

E. Take your puppy out to experience new people, places and situations.
F. Get your puppy off to a good start by putting him on a regular schedule.
G. For example, ask your puppy to sit and not jump up when you walk in the door.
