Instead, I could only take part in the sports by 17 as the statistician, a role that allowed me to stay close to the sport I loved. My job was to examine various statistics connected with baseball and to provide 18 to the coach. Though I wasn’t on the field, I found joy in studying the numbers behind the game.

Convinced that a change in the line-up (阵容) would be 21 , I approached the coach to suggest 22 line-ups. Initially, my ideas were met with skepticism. The coach, like many, preferred to 23 his experience over the numbers.
However, following our team’s seventh 24 , he finally agreed to let me try my hand at 25 the line-up. I re-examined the statistics from a fresh perspective and proposed a few minor but crucial 26 . To everyone’s surprise, the team showed 27 almost immediately. The new line-up made the team play to its 28 , and all of the players felt more inspired. Over the next few games, we continued to refine the line-up, and the 29 behind these changes kept everyone engaged and focused. 30 , we were leading with a score of 4-2 and, against all odds, won the championship. This victory was sweet, not just because of the trophy, but because it 31 the power of statistics in sports.
Looking back, I realise that even though I couldn’t play on the field, my efforts as a statistician were just as valuable. My basic 32 of statistics played an important role in our success, which earned me a school award and further 33 my love for the subject. It was a turning point that led me to 34 a major in statistics in college. This experience taught me that even from the sidelines (场外), one can make a meaningful impact with the right knowledge and a bit of courage to 35 the way things have always been done. It was then that I discovered the power of data and the impact of creative problem-solving — a lesson that has shaped my journey ever since.

押题猜想六 记叙文阅读(情感故事/成长励志)
限时:8min
I heard time and again that creative expression and science were contradictory. When my college roommate concluded with a personality test that I was the “creative” type, the rest of my friends said that couldn’t be right, because “I was a scientist and therefore was not creative.” When I tell people I'm in a chemistry Ph. D.program, they often respond with something along the lines of, “I could never do that because I am more of the creative type.”
At times I have internalized this misconception. I worried my way of thinking would’t fit in with “proper” scientists. In the end though, my desire to pursue a scientific career won out. I figured I would continue to find a way to balance my research with my creative pursuits.
I started during my first year of grad school, when I served as a teacher's assistant for an analytical chemistry lab course. Todd, the professor leading the class, spotted me watching him fix glassware and offered to give me a lesson. I learned how to repair equipment as well as artistic glass blowing techniques. I felt like myself, enjoying my scientific studies while also satisfying my artistic side. But once I finished my teaching assistant duties, finding time for glass blowing became difficult and my research began to suffer. I had a hard time brainstorming innovative solutions. I needed a creative outlet to keep myself going; it just had to fit within my schedule.
This was when I found pottery (陶艺), which I could pursue one evenings and weekends. After my first class, I was addicted. I keep a note book filled with doodles (乱涂) of cup designs inspired by my experiments. Through the challenge of distilling (提炼) my paper into its core concepts in such a way, I gained a better understanding of my project. Pottery has now turned into a way for me to train my brain to be creative.
41.What does the underlined part “this misconception” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Creativity and science conflict
B.Personality tests are unscientific.
C.Scientists are lacking in artistic talent.
D.Pursuing a Ph. D.in chemistry is unwise.
42.How did the author feel during Todd’s class?
A.Worried. B.Content. C.Confused. D.Shocked.
43.What happened after the author finished her teaching assistant duties?
A.She found it hard to work with Todd.
B.She rescheduled the glass blowing course.
C.She noticed a decline in her blowing skills.
D.She had a temporary setback in her research.
44.The author took up pottery in order to ________.
A.meet new friends B.find peace of mind
C.move ahead in her research D.pursue a career in it
45.What effect did pottery have on the author?
A.It reminded her of the golden days at university.
B.It motivated her to be a part-time designer.
C.It enabled her to do experiments at night.
D.It helped her think outside the box.

Passage 1
The afternoon air was thick and warm, and by the time my dad and I reached the bay, which we called a swimming palace, my clothes were damp and itchy on my skin. Dad dived into a splash, heading out toward the edge of our narrow bay. Overwhelmed, suddenly, with envy, I did what I hadn’t done in years: I held my breath and pulled my own head underwater.
There, suspended beneath the glimmering (闪着微光) surface, I remembered it all — my love of diving, swimming, rivers and lakes. I knew what it was like again: to be free and fully present in my own skin.
Though I’ve always loved the water, I had spent seven years prior to that day staying away from moments like this one. I was afraid. Struggling for a long time with unhelpful treatments, and the pressures of teenage girls’ appearance, I had become entirely reliant on my makeup. I needed total control over how I looked, and going swimming meant washing this control away. My bare face and natural appearance were not something I identified with. I hated it, deeply, though I wished more than anything that I didn’t.
But those 10 minutes of contentment I floated within were fuel for the next chapter of my life. Suddenly, it didn’t matter how I did it. Whether through medication or mental attitude, I would find a way to have the kind of life that allowed me to div e into the water.
That day was the beginning of a slow but determined journey back to my own body — a slow unlearning of my deep self-consciousness. Life didn’t change in a heartbeat: I returned to the shore with all the same fears, but I clothed myself in a new determination to change things. I felt the tide turn.
Reflecting on this moment again today, it seems strange to think that going bare-faced on an empty beach was such a challenge. But this is exactly the perspective I had once dreamed of reaching. I do my best never to take for granted this freedom I have found. I will sink under the surface of the water, embracing that swell of fear and joy and liberation.
41.What can we learn from the first paragraph?

D.It was dangerous to swim in the bay.
42.The author avoided swimming for seven years because ______.

Passage 2
After some blood tests, Dr. Stubs stood before me, a tall man, but short on personality and sporting a cold expression. “You have systemic lupus.” he said matter-of-factly. “Lupus,” he continued, “is an auto-immune disease and...” I remember certain details but mostly I remember him talking about children. “Children are no harm. But childbirth would jumpstart additional symptoms that could be life threatening. You already have two kids anyway.”
As I got up to leave, shaken and drained, he said his parting words, “I would discourage any further research. There is no cure and nothing can prevent its progression.”
Still, I did research lupus and its symptoms — tiredness and joint pain — were both consistent with what I was experiencing. And eventually some major organs could be affected, causing shutdown and possibly death.
I studied and found out that echinacea (紫锥菊) had a record in making immune system stronger. I decided that along with the plant I would strengthen my mindset by immersing myself in my family with my one-year-old son and three-year-old daughter.
After another visit I decided never to go back to Dr. Stubs. How could one endure repeatedly hearing desperate words coming from an emotionless mouth even though they were truth? The years passed. When I would feel tired and achy I pulled support from my children and their laughter.
Finally, after eight years, I went to Dr. Kirstein who was recommended by a friend. She stood there holding my hand and looking into my eyes warmly.
“So, let’s talk a little.”
Instantly my defenses were down. Before I knew it, she had me running on and on about my children, my husband, my life and dreams. I told her about all the meaningful activities I was involved in, those things I might have never done without the disease.
After several follow-up tests, and greater research into my family history, Dr. Kirstein came to conclusive answer. I did not have systemic lupus. There must be something wrong with the initial tests eight years before.

Passage 3
Last Saturday. David was taking a walk in the park near his home when he noticed a woman with a boy of about eight years old. When David passed them, he heard the woman yell, “How stupid you are! You’re good at nothing.” The boy said nothing. He just stood there, looking upset, which reminded David of his middle school days.
After he entered middle school, David lacked self-confidence because he was often made fun of by others. He was often told that he was good at nothing, which David believed. But one day it all changed.
One day, in an English writing class, Mrs Brown asked them to read a novel. They were asked to write a new chapter for the novel after they finished reading the book. A few days later, David handed in his story. He didn’t give it much thought. But the next day, to his surprise, the comment “Well done” from Mrs Brown came into view the moment he turned to the page where the story was written.
Encouraged by Mrs. Brown’s feedback, David began writing short stories and seeking her advice. She always corrected his mistakes and provided valuable suggestions. Over time, David’s confidence grew, and he eventually joined the school newspaper as an editor.
After graduating from college, David continued writing and eventually published his first book. His success as a writer was largely due to Mrs. Brown’s encouragement. Without her support, he might have had a very different life.
Inspired by his own life story, David decided to do something for that boy. He approached the woman and her son, smiling warmly. He introduced himself and gently spoke to the boy, “You know, I used to feel the same way, but someone believed in me, and it changed everything. You have potential too, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.” The boy’s eyes lit up with a glimmer of hope, and David left knowing he had planted a seed of confidence that might one day grow into a mighty oak. The mother, upon hearing David’s story, felt ashamed of her behavior and realized the impact her words had on her son.
David’s encounter with the boy reminded him of the power of encouragement and the difference it can make in someone’s life. He vowed to continue spreading positivity and confidence wherever he went.

Passage 4
Larry was a truck driver, but his lifelong dream was to fly. When he graduated from high school, he joined the Air Force in hopes of becoming a pilot. Unfortunately, poor eyesight disqualified him. So, when he finally left the service, he had to satisfy himself with watching others fly the fighter jets that criss-crossed (纵横交错) the skies over his backyard. As he sat there in his lawn chair, he dreamed about the magic of flying.
Then one day, Larry Walters got an idea. He went down to the local store and bought a tank of helium (氦气) and forty-five weather balloons. Back in his yard, Larry used straps to attach the balloons to his lawn chair, the kind you might have in your own back yard. He anchored the chair to the bumper of his jeep and inflated (充气) the balloons with helium. Then he packed some sandwiches and drinks and loaded a BB gun, figuring he could pop a few of those balloons when it was time to return to earth. His preparations complete, Larry Walters sat in his chair and cut the anchoring cord. His plan was to lazily float up a ways, and then lazily back down to ground.
But, things didn’t quite work out that way. When Larry cut the cord, he didn’t float lazily up-he shot up as if fired from a cannon! Nor did he go up a couple hundred feet. He climbed and climbed, until he finally leveled off at eleven THOUSAND feet! At that height, he could hardly risk deflating any of the balloons, lest he unbalance the load and really experience flying! So, he stayed up there, sailing around for fourteen hours, totally at a loss as to how to get down. Eventually, Larry drifted into the approach corridor for Los Angeles International Airport. A Pan Am (泛美航空公司) pilot radioed the tower about passing a guy in a lawn chair at eleven thousand feet... with a gun in his lap!
At that point, the Navy sent a helicopter to rescue him. But, the rescue team had a hard time getting to him, because the draft from their propeller (螺旋桨) kept pushing his home-made machine farther and farther away. Eventually they were able to hover over him and drop a rescue line with which they gradually pulled him back to earth.
As soon as Larry hit the ground, he was arrested. But as he was being led away in handcuffs (手铐), a television reporter called out to ask, “Mr. Walters, why did you do it?” Larry stopped, eyed the man for a moment and replied casually, “A man can’t just sit around.”
41.What caused Larry to be kept away from his dream?
A.Strict Air Force rules.
B.His identity as a truck driver.
C.His lawn chair.
D.His poor eyesight.
42.What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A.Larry’s successful attempt to fly a fighter jet using helium balloons.
B.Larry’s successful flying with helium balloons and a lawn chair.
C.Larry’s invention of a new type of weather balloon for scientific research.
D.Larry’s preparations and plan to float using helium balloons.
43.How did the Pan Am pilot feel when he saw Larry?
A.Regretful. B.Surprised. C.Grateful. D.Thrilled.
44.Why didn’t he deflate any of the balloons?
A.Because he wanted to stay in the air longer to enjoy the view.
B.Because he was worried about unbalancing the load and causing an accident.
C.Because he forgot to fire his BB gun.
D.Because he was afraid the balloons would explode at high altitude.
45.By saying “A man can’t just sit around” in the last paragraph, the author means ______.
A.Larry wanted to avoid physical activity and preferred sitting in his lawn chair
B.Larry believed in taking action and pursuing his dreams rather than doing nothing
C.Larry was tired of flying and decided to give up on his dream
D.Larry was criticizing others for not sitting around like him
Passage 5
On her 53rd birthday, Debra Ferrell received the usual well-wishes on Facebook, but she also got some unusual messages. One was about a family in Minnesota who had just lost their four-year-old son to cancer. His older brother, autistic (自闭症) and nonverbal, was struggling with grief. They were reaching out to Ferrell, seeking any possible support. “Could you bring him some comfort?” they asked with deep sadness.
Ferrell’s heart ached when she read the message. She knew she had to do something. She sent them a wind chime (风铃) with the message “Listen to the wind and know that I am near.” written on the clapper. It now hangs in the four-year-old’s bedroom, where his brother can go to listen to it whenever he wants. Ferrell says, “I hope it brings him some comfort. Sometimes, a small gesture can mean the world to someone going through a tough time.”
This is not the first time that Ferrell decided to give gifts for her birthday. In fact, for her 47th birthday in 2014, she founded Love with Skin On, an organization devoted to doing good deeds near her home in Roanoke, Virginia, and beyond. Its motto is simple: Be Love, Do Stuff. “I believe that small acts of kindness can make a big difference,” Ferrell explains. “It’s amazing to see the joy on people’s faces when you do something unexpected for them.”
To celebrate her 53rd birthday, Ferrell decided to commit 53 random acts of kindness by the end of her birth month. She put out a call on her Facebook page, asking for information on people who could use a little help. Over the years, she has reached out and touched well over 100 strangers, some found through Facebook callouts, others with help from her grandkids. In another act of giving, she shares her favourite inexpensive and creative gift ideas on Pinterest for others to use. Her grandkids often join her on these missions, making it a family affair. “It’s amazing to see the joy on people’s faces,” she says. “And it’s even more rewarding when my grandkids are involved. They learn the value of kindness and compassion.”
Ferrell funds all these acts of kindness herself. She buys gift cards, makes pay-it-forward purchases at drive-throughs, sends care packages, and even covers the gas to deliver these surprises. Her family often gives her extra birthday cash, jokingly warning her not to spend it on others, but she always does. “I got a couple of Amazon gift cards for my birthday this year and was like ‘YESSS!’” she says with a laugh. “It’s my party, and I’ll give if I want to!”
41.What did Deba Ferrell receive on her 53rd birthday?
A.Messages requesting assistance. B.Invitations to speak at a community event.
C.Unusual birthday wishes with touching stories. D.Special birthday gifts from Love with Skin On.
42.Why did Deba Ferrell commit to performing 53 acts of kindness?
A.To continue a long-standing family tradition.
B.To fulfill a personal commitment for her birthday.
C.To raise awareness for her charitable organization.
D.To participate in a popular social media challenge.
43.What does Deba Ferrell do on Pinterest?
A.She shares innovative ideas. B.She gives away care packages.
C.She purchases gifts for strangers. D.She involves her grandkids in family activities.

Teen brains aged faster than normal from stress by at least three years, a study has found. The study, published in Biological Psychiatry: Global Open Science, was the first to compare examinations of the physical structures of teenagers’ brains from before and after the stress started, and to document significant differences.
Researchers knew teens had higher levels of depression, anxiety and fearfulness than before the stress. But we knew nothing about the effects on their brains. The researchers found growth in brain areas that control access to some memories and help control fear, stress and other emotions.
Premature (过早的) aging of kids’ brains isn’t a positive development. Their stressful childhood experiences not only make people easier to suffer from depression, anxiety and other mental illnesses, but they can raise the risk of cancer, heart disease and other long-term negative outcomes.
The scientists tried to make out how the stress itself may have impacted the physical structure of the children’s brains and their mental health. They matched pairs of children with the same age, gender and stress. “That allowed us to compare 16-year-olds before the stress with different 16-year-olds assessed after the stress,” said Ian Gotlib, a psychology professor at Stanford University.
To determine the brain age of their samples, the researchers fed their brain examinations into a machine-learning model for predicting brain age developed by the ENIGMA-Brain Age working group, a co-operation among scientists who share their brain image data sets. They also appraised mental health outcomes reported by the matched pairs. They found more severe symptoms of anxiety, depression and internalizing (内在化的) problems in the group that had experienced the stress.
Dan Siegel, clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine, noted that many individuals experience post-traumatic (创伤后的) growth after a stressful experience. “This is a useful initial study,” agreed David Fassler, clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Vermont. “I expect the results will inform the design of future research initiatives.”
46.What can we learn from the first two paragraphs?
A.Researchers had a good knowledge of aging.
B.Stress greatly influenced teenagers’ brains.
C.Brain growth improved teenagers’ happiness.
D.Bad memories resulted in negative emotions.
47.What is the main idea of paragraph 3?
A.The positive development of teenage brains.
B.The stressful childhood experience of teenagers.
C.The impact of premature aging of kids’ brains.
D.The mental illness that teenagers suffer.
48.Why was the machine-learning model developed?
A.To satisfy the need of the market.
B.To analyze the brain age of samples.
C.To predict mental health outcomes.
D.To solve internalizing problems.
49.What’s probably the meaning of the underlined word in paragraph 5?
A.behaved B.complained C.objected D.evaluated
50.What was David Fassler’s attitude to the study?
A.Favorable. B.Indifferent. C.Doubtful. D.Unclear.

Passage 1
More and more people are realizing that negative self-talk and negative energy can affect you in many ways and cause you additional stress. Because of this, developing more positive self-talk is an important way to reduce stress in your life. You can help yourself maintain a positive mind, which will help with positive self-talk by surrounding yourself with positive energy in your life. You can get that by adding some elements to your life.
Listening to music that not only has a pleasant melody, but an uplifting message, can be great for developing positive self-talk. Have you ever had a song “stuck in your head” for a few hours or days, the lyrics (歌词) repeating themselves in your mind? If those lyrics were positive and inspirational, that would be a good thing. It’s a much better mental soundtrack to have than a running stream of complaints, criticisms of self-limiting thoughts, or even songs that had more depressing or sad lyrics.
Books on strength, personal power, or self-help can be good resources to help you change your outlook and the things you say to yourself. Rather than bringing self-defeating thoughts, you can find yourself thinking of new can-do concepts when times get tough.
One of the most important ways you can get and keep positive energy in your life is to choose your friend wisely. Do your friends uplift you, or bring you down? Are they critical, or approving? Ideal friendships provide support when you’re down, fun when you’re up, wisdom when you’re lost. Good friends can inspire you to reach greater heights, and see your strengths even when you don’t always. Pay attention to how your friends make you feel, and if they’re less than supportive, start putting your energy and time toward people who are better suited to be your friends.
In addition, positive affirmations (肯定) can certainly change your self-talk from negative to positive. Now, why not begin working positive affirmations into your life in some creative ways?
51.What does the underlined word “that” refer to in the first paragraph?
A.Positive self-talk. B.Additional stress.
C.Positive energy. D.Negative energy.
52.How many ways does the author suggest to get positive energy in our life?
A.Three. B.Four. C.Five. D.Six.
53.If you have something “stuck in your head”, you’ll probably ______.
A.keep thinking of that thing all the time B.regard that thing as the most important
C.think about the bad effect of that thing D.try to get that thing out of your mind
54.According to the passage, your best friend should be those who ______.
A.uplift you or bring you down B.encourage you to do things better
C.provide fun when you’re depressed D.are supportive when you’ re wrong
55.What will probably be talked about in the following paragraph?
A.Some great ways of making great friends. B.Some creative ways of practicing affirmation.
C.How negative self-talk influences a person. D.How positive self-talk reduces stress in one’s life.
Passage 2
Peregrine falcons (游隼) migrate to the Arctic during the spring. They breed (繁殖) during the summer and fly south during the fall. Some falcons journey from as far as Indonesia! Others just travel from northwest Russia to Western Europe. How will climate change affect future populations of peregrines?
Each summer for 6 years, researchers visited a different site in the Eurasian Arctic, traveling by boat and camping. Researchers caught peregrine falcons in their nests and equipped them with backpack-style satellite transmitters. Researchers took blood and feather samples from 50 peregrines in total. This was to investigate differences in their genomes (基因组).
To figure out what might happen to their Arctic habitat in the future, researchers used a climate model (a computer program). The model assumed that greenhouse emissions (排放) will continue to rise throughout the 21st century, with a resulting increase in global temperature. Researchers used data from a previous study to work out where the tundra (苔原) would have been in the last ice age. They assumed that peregrines prefer the same habitats that they did thousands of years ago. They also assumed that they will still prefer the same habitats in the future.
Of the 56 peregrines researchers caught, they $$

1.—Is your uncle a teacher of chemistry in Tianjin University?
—No. But he ______ Chinese there for thirty-five years and he is retired.
A.has taught B.has been teaching
C.taught D.had taught
2.To return to the problem of water pollution, I’d like you to take a look at a study in China in 2023.
A.having conducted B.being conducted C.conducted D.to be conducted
3.________ to succeed in his studies, Peter set even higher goals and worked tirelessly to achieve them.
A.Motivating B.Motivated
C.To motivate D.Having motivated
4.Over the past decade, the number of visitors to the Forbidden City in Beijing, where numerous historical treasures are housed, _________ dramatically.
A.increases B.increase C.has increased D.have increased
【答案】C
【详解】考查时态和主谓一致。句意:在过去的十年里,参观北京紫禁城的游客数量急剧增加,那里收藏着许多历史珍品。由Over the past decade可知,句子时态用现在完成时,主语the number是单数,因此空格处是has increased。故选C。
5.My iPad start this morning. There must have been something wrong with it.
A.shouldn’t B.mustn’t C.needn’t D.wouldn’t
【答案】D
【详解】考查情态动词辨析。句意:我的iPad今天早上无法启动。一定是出了什么问题。A. shouldn’t不应该;B. mustn’t禁止;C. needn’t不需要;D. wouldn’t不会。此处would表示过去的习惯或反复性的动作,由于设备出现了故障导致无法正常启动,因此选用表示“不会”含义的wouldn’t最为恰当。故选D项。
6.The astronauts performed their tasks so excellent. They ______ hard for their duty.
A.should practice B.must have practiced
C.might practice D.could have practiced
【答案】B
【详解】考查情态动词用法辨析。句意:宇航员们出色地完成了他们的任务。他们一定为了他们的职责进行了刻苦训练。A. should practice应该练习;B. must have practiced一定进行了练习(对过去事情的肯定推测);C. might practice可能练习(表示可能性较小的推测);D. could have practiced本可以练习(表示过去有能力做某事却没做)。根据“The astronauts performed their tasks so excellent”可推知,宇航员们出色完成任务,背后肯定是经过了刻苦训练的,这是对过去发生事情的肯定推测。所以用“must have practiced”符合语境。故选B项。

1.She searched the entire house for her keys, only________them resting on the kitchen counter where she had left them.
A.finding B.to have found C.to find D.found
2.If you’re old enough to earn a wage and pay taxes, you should be allowed ________ a say on how the government spends them!
A.having had B.being had C.having D.to have
【答案】D
【详解】考查非谓语动词。句意:如果你年龄足够大,可以挣工资和纳税,你应该被允许对政府如何使用这些钱有发言权!表示“被允许做某事”短语为be allowed to do sth.,故空处应用不定式形式to have。故选D。
3.Since ______, the film, Ne Zha 2, has attracted countless audiences into theaters.
A.released B.to release C.releasing D.having released
