【原文】
M: Today, I’d like to talk about my new novel. Some of the plots take place in Paris, as well as in the French countryside. Although I was born in Brazil and I went to school in England, I feel very at home in France. The people who read my novels all like the character Andrew, the police officer, and they often ask me what makes me develop this character in that way? Well, the thought comes from a restaurant owner I know who is a deep thinker and has a habit of observation. Now I’m busy adapting my new novel for a film. I’ve had to make some changes from the original novel, so I hope my readers won’t be too upset. In the book, there are several passages where Andrew thinks things over to himself. It’s difficult to show one’s thoughts on screen, so I’ve introduced a new character, an editor who becomes Andrew’s friend. Andrew tells him about his plans to solve problems, and I think the changes I’ve made are necessary. The director asked me to add some special effects as well. I refused because I felt that special effects are not in keeping with the novel. I believe the film is going to be exciting enough without them.

It was a nervous time. World War II had started, and British ships were always watching for German submarines called U-boats. The ship Ben Lomond had left Cape Town, South Africa, with a crew of 55, including a young officer named Poon Lim.
On November 23, 1942, the worst fear came true. The Ben Lomond was attacked by a U-boat. Within minutes the boat was sinking. Poon Lim grabbed a life jacket and leaped over the side. He swam rapidly away from the ship in case it exploded. Sure enough, it let out a large boom and sank beneath the waves. For two hours Poon Lim struggled in the water. Once he almost got onto a life raft with five other sailors, but it got away from his grasp. Then he saw another life raft that was empty, swam to it, and climbed aboard. He found a few cans of biscuits, a water jug, some flares, and a flashlight, which could be enough supplies for about a month.
Day after day Poon Lim had his few biscuits and a couple of sips of water. He searched the horizon for ships. Twice he leaped up to shout and wave when he saw help coming. Once he saw a freight ship. It passed him. At a later time, he saw a United States Navy plane. It flew low over the raft but then disappeared. Still later a U-boat spotted him but for some reason left him alone.
Poon Lim knew he needed to stay strong. He couldn’t get much exercise on an eight-foot-square raft, but he could swim. A couple of times a day, he circled the raft, always watching for sharks. Soon his food and water ran low. He knew that drinking seawater would make him sick, so he tore off the canvas cover on his life jacket and set it out to catch rainwater. Then he took apart the flashlight and used a wire inside to make a fishhook. For months Poon Lim drifted, catching fish and sometimes birds. One time he even caught a shark. Finally, after 130 days, he noticed that the color of the water was changing. Two days later, on his 133rd day, he saw a boat. Three sailors in a small sailboat picked him up and took him to Belem, a city on the coast of Brazil. Poon Lim had crossed the Atlantic Ocean.
No one ever had survived longer on a raft at sea. Poon Lim received many honors, including Britain’s highest award. A booklet of his survival methods was put into every British life raft.
24. What happened just after Poon Lim’s ship was hit?
A. It immediately exploded. B. Poon Lim jumped over the side.
C. Poon Lim found a life raft. D. The U-boat picked up survivors.
25. How many chances of rescue did Poon Lim miss?
A. Four. B. Five.
C. Three. D. Two.
26. What did Poon Lim do just after his food and water ran low?
A. He jumped up and down and waved, hoping to attract help.
B. He went swimming, hoping to find some fish.
C. He made a rain catcher and some fishing equipment.
D. He spotted a United States Navy plane.
27. Which of these things happened last?

According to a recent study, consuming three largely comparable meals each day to meet our energy demands may be the most effective method to prevent cognitive (认知的) deterioration. The study finds a link between skipping breakfast and a gradual failure in cognitive health. The study also reveals that eating more calories at one meal than another is not linked to a quick failure in cognitive function, but it does not improve cognition as much as eating balanced three meals daily.
With previous study focusing on how the quality of the food we consume can affect our health, there hasn’t been much research on how our daily energy intake is distributed and how it can affect our cognitive health over the long term, as well as if it might affect our risk of dementia (痴呆).
A recent study, in which the data from the 1997 — 2006 China Health and Nutrition Survey were analyzed, examines the possible impact of various meal schedules on cognitive decline in order to better understand this.
The poll (民意调查) collected submissions from 3,342 persons in China during a ten-year period, and their responses were included in the statistics. The average age was 62. 2, and people were at least 55 years old. The study did not include those who had severe cognitive deterioration.
Each participant underwent a dietary evaluation as well as a phone-based cognitive exam at the beginning of the study period. This test evaluated each person’s ability to recall words quickly and slowly, count backward, and subtract (减) quickly from given numbers.
The findings demonstrate that in comparison to either less balanced ways of absorbing one’s total caloric intake or less equally distributed ways of ingesting one’s total energy intake, eating three balanced meals each day is related with superior cognitive function.
28. What does the underlined word “deterioration” mean in paragraph 1?
A. Increase. B. Decline.
C. Exchange. D. Spread.
29. What is the main difference between the recent study and the previous one?
A. The contents. B. The method.
C. The participants. D. The process.
30. How did the researchers do the recent study?
A. By doing experiments.
B. By analyzing previous data.
C. By interviewing senior people.
D. By examining people with cognitive disease.
31. Which of the following may contribute to best cognition?
A. Skipping breakfast every day.
B. Three balanced meals per day.
C. Hunger-determined food time and amount.
D. A big lunch with a small breakfast and dinner.
【答案】28. B 29. A 30. B 31. B
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。介绍了一项研究表明优秀的认知功能与三餐均衡饮食有关。
【28题详解】
词句猜测题。由后句“The study finds a link between skipping breakfast and a gradual failure in cognitive health.”(此研究发现了不吃早餐与认知健康问题之间存在关联)可知,该词与failure“失灵、失败”意义相似,decline“减少、衰退”符合语义。故选B项。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。由文第二段“With previous study focusing on how the quality of the food we consume can affect our health, there hasn’t been much research on how our daily energy intake is distributed and how it can affect our cognitive health over the long term, as well as if it might affect our risk of dementia (痴呆). ”(以前的研究专注于我们所摄入的食物的品质是如何影响我们的健康的,对于我们日常摄入的能量的分配、长期来说对于认知健康以及是否会影响患痴呆的风险的研究不多)可知,研究的区别主要在于研究的内容不同。故选A项。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。由文第三段“A recent study, in which the data from the 1997-2006 China Health and Nutrition Survey were analyzed, examines the possible impact of various meal schedules on cognitive decline in order to better understand this.”(通过分析从中国健康与营养调查获得的1997年至2006年的数据,为了更好地理解这种关系,最近的一项调查审视了各种饮食习惯对于认知衰退的可能的影响)可知,这项调查主要是通过分析数据进行。故选B项。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。由文最后一段“The findings demonstrate that, in comparison to either less balanced ways of absorbing one’s total caloric intake or less equally distributed ways of ingesting one’ s total energy intake, eating three balanced meals each day is related with superior cognitive function.”(研究表明,比起要么不那么均衡地吸收总体的卡路里摄入,要么不平等地分配总的能量摄入,优秀的认知功能与三餐均衡饮食有关)可推知,最好的认知功能是由三餐均衡饮食促成的。故选B项。

Running has long been considered one of the most efficient, convenient, and beneficial workouts. But some claim you get more out of the classic way of exercising with a new technique—or rather a 180-degree about-face.
A study led by Dr. Gardner published in 2016 in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning backs this up. Researchers found that running backwards benefited athletes by improving their running economy; by running backwards over time the athletes became better runners overall.
Unlike forward running, which generally uses the muscles in the front of the leg, running backwards primarily uses the muscles of the bottom chain, especially the calf(腓)muscles and glutes. Dr. Gardner adds, “Within just a minute or two of running backwards, you’ll start to feel the burning in your calves!”
Frankie Ruiz, a longtime cross-country running coach and chief running officer explains that aside from moving in reverse, running backwards differs from regular running because it requires an entirely different combination of things to do correctly.
Running backwards may be easier on the knees. “In a backwards movement, the set of muscles involved in absorbing the impact in the lower level are opposite. Your lower leg muscles are doing most of the absorbing, thereby placing less stress on the knees. Running backwards will recruit lesser utilized muscles resulting in muscle growth and toning,” says Ruiz.
In addition to using different muscles than running forwards, running backwards enhances balance and posture, “as it forces you to stay in a more upright position,” Gardner says.
As to claims that running backwards can burn more calories than forward running, Gardner says it’s not so black and white. Lots of factors (including heart rate, age, and others) affect how many calories you burn during any particular activity. “Different muscle pattern usage doesn’t necessarily burn more calories. It is the intensity(强度)that matters most,” she points out.
Because running backwards causes more muscle activity than running forwards, however, Gardner notes it makes sense that one might burn more calories, but there’s not conclusive data on exact calorie consumption differences.
32. What is the benefit of running backwards?
A. It combines various muscles.
B. It can better athletes’ performance.
C. It frees the front muscles of the leg.
D. It gets calf muscles and glutes burned.
33. Why is Ruiz’s opinion on running backwards mentioned?
A. To state more of its advantages.
B. To share his personal preference.
C. To show its promising development.
D. To introduce detailed guidance on it.
34. What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?
A. Calories consumption is difficult to measure.
B. Using different muscles can burn more calories.
C. The amount of calories burning depends on many aspects.
D. Running backwards burns more calories than running forwards.
35. Who would benefit most from this passage?
A. Nutritionists pursuing a balanced diet.
B. Patients hoping to cure their injured knees.
C. Coaches intending to better their training methods.
D. Runners seeking to improve their economical situation.
【答案】32. B 33. A 34. C 35. C

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了倒着跑步的好处并分析了形成这些好处的原因。
【32题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“Researchers found that running backwards benefited athletes by improving their running economy; by running backwards over time the athletes became better runners overall.(研究人员发现,向后跑步通过改善跑步经济使运动员受益;随着时间的推移,通过向后跑,运动员总体上变成了更好的跑步者)”可知,向后跑步的运动员整体上会成为更好的跑步运动员,也就是说,能使运动员的表现更好。故选B项
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中的“Running backwards may be easier on the knees. “In a backwards movement, the set of muscles involved in absorbing the impact in the lower level are opposite. Your lower leg muscles are doing most of the absorbing, thereby placing less stress on the knees. Running backwards will recruit lesser utilized muscles resulting in muscle growth and toning,” says Ruiz.(膝盖向后跑可能更容易。“在向后运动中,参与吸收较低水平冲击力的一组肌肉是相反的。您的小腿肌肉正在完成大部分吸收,从而减轻膝盖的压力。向后跑步会招募较少使用的肌肉,从而导致肌肉生长和调理,”Ruiz说)”可知,Ruiz认为倒着跑步对膝盖有保护作用,且也会导致肌肉的增长和塑形,结合本文主题为倒着跑步的好处,所以提到Ruiz的观点是为了陈述更多倒着跑步的好处。故选A项。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中的“Lots of factors (including heart rate, age, and others) affect how many calories you burn during any particular activity.(许多因素(包括心率、年龄等)会影响您在任何特定活动中燃烧多少热量)”以及尾段中的“Because running backwards causes more muscle activity than running forwards, however, Gardner notes it makes sense that one might burn more calories, but there’s not conclusive data on exact calorie consumption differences.(然而,因为向后跑步比向前跑步会导致更多的肌肉活动,加德纳指出,一个人可能会燃烧更多的卡路里是有道理的,但没有关于确切卡路里消耗差异的结论性数据)”可知,向后跑步比向前跑步肌肉活动会更多,但没有明确的结论证实热量燃烧的差异性,有很多因素决定了热量燃烧的多少,由此可推断,最后两段进述的是热量燃烧的量取决于很多因素。
Nicholas Epley, a behavioural scientist, and I conducted a series of studies and concluded that kind acts as simple as buying a cup of coffee for someone can promote a person’s happiness. Everyday life affords many opportunities for such actions, yet people do not always catch them. ____36____
We firstly studied acts of kindness done for familiar people such as friends, classmates or family. ____37____ For instance, in one experiment, people wrote notes to friends and family “just because”. In another, they gave cupcakes away to workmates. Across these experiments, we asked both the person performing a kind act and the one receiving it to fill out questionnaires (问卷).
Across our studies, several strong patterns appeared. For one, both performers and receivers of the acts of kindness were in more positive moods than normal after these kind acts. ____38____ The receivers felt significantly better than the kind actors expected. The receivers also reliably rated these acts as “bigger” than the people performing them did.
____39____In one experiment, participants at an ice-skating rink (溜冰场) in a public park gave away hot chocolate to people they didn’t know on a cold winter day. Again, the experience was more positive than the performers expected for the receivers. Although the people giving out the hot chocolate saw the act as relatively small, it really mattered to the receivers.
These findings suggest that what might seem small when we are deciding whether or not to do something nice for someone else could matter a great deal to the person we do it for. These warm acts can improve our own emotional health and brighten the day of another person. ____40____

上文“Nicholas Epley, a behavioural scientist, and I conducted a series of studies and concluded that kind acts as simple as buying a cup of coffee for someone can promote a person’s happiness. Everyday life affords many opportunities for such actions, yet people do not always catch them.
根据下文“For instance, in one experiment, people wrote notes to friends and family “just because”. In another, they gave cupcakes away to workmates.(例如,在一个实验中,人们给朋友和家人写便条“仅仅是因为”。在另一个实验中,他们把纸杯蛋糕送给同事。)”可知,实验过程中,不同的情况善行是不同的,C项“从一个情况到下一个情况,具体的善行不同。”符合,引起下文,故选C。
【38题详解】

For one, both performers and receivers of the acts of kindness were in more positive moods than normal after these kind acts.(在我们的研究中,出现了几种强烈的模式。 符合,For one和For another相呼应,故选B。
【39题详解】
下文“In one experiment, participants at an ice-skating rink (溜冰场) in a public park gave away hot chocolate to people they didn’t know on a cold winter day. Again, the experience was more positive than the performers expected for the receivers. Although the people giving out the hot chocolate saw the act as relatively small, it really mattered to the receivers.(在一个实验中,参与者在一个公园的溜冰场里,在一个寒冷的冬天给陌生人送热巧克力。再次,这种体验比执行者对接收者的期望更积极。虽然分发热巧克力的人认为这种行为相对较小,但是对于接受者来说却很重要。)”介绍实验发现参与者没有意识到他们对陌生人的积极影响,D项“我们发现参与者也没有意识到他们对陌生人的积极影响。”符合,故选D。
【40题详解】
上文“These findings suggest that what might seem small when we are deciding whether or not to do something nice for someone else could matter a great deal to the person we do it for, These warm acts can improve our own emotional health and brighten the day of another person. (这些发现表明,当我们决定是否为别人做一件好事时,那些看起来微不足道的事情对于我们为之做事的人来说可能意义重大。这些温暖的行为可以改善我们自己的情绪健康,并照亮别人的一天。)”对文章进行了总结,指出了善行的重要意义,A项“所以为什么不在可以的时候选择善良呢?”承接上文,呼应我们要善行,故选A。

Dear Robert,
I’m writing to share with you an unforgettable learning trip I had last Friday. Through the learning trip organized by our school, I was fortunate enough to visit Changsha.
We visited beautiful campuses of Hunan University and Central South University, two famous universities in Changsha, where we attended inspiring lectures given by their students and professors. Additionally, the tour to the Changsha Museum blew my mind, allowing me to glimpse the rich history and culture of the region.
The trip was incredibly educational. It not only enriched my knowledge about Chinese history and culture but also sparked my interest in higher education. I feel more motivated to achieve academic excellence and explore the world of learning further.
I hope you get a chance to visit my hometown.

As they drove beyond a town heat their destination, the sky grew darker and darker and suddenly the rain poured down. When they were approaching a bridge,a wave of fast- moving water washed over the top of it.
Within seconds, the rapids had lifted the little white car into the river. It happened so quickly that they were too shocked to scream. Finally, the car caught an object in the middle of the river.
Muddy flood water was pouring into the car and rising quickly. Jane knew they had to get out quickly before the water rose too high in the car. Forcing the door open, Charlie jumped into the flood from the back row. Meanwhile, Jane grabbed the front door handle and tried to open it but in vain."Try it again!" her husband shouted anxiously.
Hearing that, Jane took hold of the handle, using all her strength, and was able to pull the door open. She came out of the vehicle and finally reached Charlie, coughing and shaking. They leaned tightly against the back of the Car and screamed for help.
At the same time a truck driver called Joe was complaining about the bad weather in his truck parked in his yard near the river. He had planned a road trip.Suddenly, carrying over the roar of the water, he heard screams coming from the river and rushed out immediately, spotting a car in the river."I've got to do something,”he told himself. But how did he approach the car in such a complete darkness? Without thinking twice, Joe returned to his truck and drove to the river bank. Then he turned on the headlights and got a long rope from it.After that, he fastened the one end of the rope to the truck tight.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________【答案】范文
The water was still rising. By this time, the swelling water had reached the chest of Charlie and Jane, who shivered uncontrollably and could not tell whether they trembled because of cold or fright. Fortunately, they spotted the flashing headlights of Joe's truck and caught a glimpse of his stout figure shape approaching them with a long rope. A strong torrent, coupled with the showering rain, washed over Joe and nearly swallowed him. However, this determined man rose to the flood and forged ahead, painfully and laboriously.
Joe finally reached the couple. 'Catching the rope.' he yelled at the top of his lungs. Having received Joe's message, Charlie and Jane twisted their figures and clutched the rope tightly. Together, three of them swam against the torrent along the rope and finally made it to the bank. As Joe hauled the couple from the flood, the breathless Jane was too moved to utter a single word. Only Charlie held Joe's hands tightly and sputtered with a choking tone, "Thank... you..., you... kind stranger, without... your help, Jane and I would have been... drowned to death." Joe shrugged off and said anyone at his place would have done the same thing. Indeed, what a narrow escape they had and what a good Samaritan Joe is!

A. Poon Lim noticed that the water had changed color.
B. Poon Lim landed in a Brazilian city.
C. Some sailors picked up Poon Lim.
D. Poon Lim caught a shark with his fishhook.

D

A. So why not choose kindness when we can?
B. For another, it was clear that performers undervalued their impacts.
C. From one situation to the next, the specific acts of kindness differed.
D We found that participants didn’t realize their positive impacts on strangers as well.
E. Our research also revealed one reason why people may not realize their actions’ impacts.
F. We compared the performers’ expectation of the receivers’ moods with their actual experiences.
G. It is because people performing kind acts undervalue how much receivers value their behaviour.

At around 6 pm, Jane and her husband, Charlie were driving on the road. They were incredibly excited because they would attend the dream wedding of her daughter Iris the next day.

Yours,
Li Hua

Some of the plots take place in paris as well as in the french countryside. Although I was born in brazil and I went to school in england, I feel very at home in france, the people who read my novels all like the character Andrew, the police officer, and they often ask me, what makes me develop this character in that way? Well, the food comes from a restaurant turn right now, who is a deep thinker and has a habit of observation. Now i'm busy adapting my new novel for a film. I've had to make some changes from the original novel, so I hope my readers won't be too upset in the book. There are several passages where Andrew thinks things over to himself. It's difficult to show one thought on screen. So we've introduced a new character, an editor who becomes Andrews friend. Andrew tells him about his plans to solve problems, and I think the changes i've made unnecessary. The director asked me to add some special effects as well. I refused because I felt that special effects are not in keeping with the novel. I believe the film is going to be exciting enough without them. Today i'd like to talk about my new novel.
A. Poon Lim noticed that the water had changed color.
B. Poon Lim landed in a Brazilian city.
C. Some sailors picked up Poon Lim.
D. Poon Lim caught a shark with his fishhook.

D
