A beggar found a leather purse that someone had dropped in the market. Opening it, he discovered that it contained 100 pieces of gold. Then he heard a merchant shouting, “A reward! A reward to the one who finds my leather purse!”
Being an honest man, the beggar came forward and handed the purse to the merchant saying, “Here is your purse. May I have the reward now?”
“Have the reward?” scoffed the merchant, greedily counting his gold, “The purse I dropped had 200 pieces of gold. You’ve already stolen more than the reward! Go away or I’ll tell the police.”
“I’m an honest man,” the beggar said defiantly, “Let us take this matter to court.”
In court the judge patiently listened to both sides of the story and said, “I believe you both. Justice is possible! Merchant, you stated that the purse you lost contained 200 pieces of gold. But the purse this beggar found had only 100 pieces of gold. Therefore, it couldn’t be the one you lost.”
And, with that, the judge gave the purse and all the gold to the beggar.

18.What does the speaker do for a living?
A.Plan tours. B.Write guidebooks. C.Design theme parks.
19.Where should people head if they like adventure rides?
A.Cedar Point. B.Magic Kingdom. C.Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

【答案】18.B 19.A 20.A
M: I’m Andy Wells. People say I have got a dream job because I travel around the world to write guidebooks for the theme parks. People often ask me what the top theme park in the world is. Well. I’d say it has to be Magic Kingdom at Disney World in Florida, the most famous theme park. But the most popular park for people who like adventure rides is Cedar Point in Ohio. It has 17 roller coasters and 3 water rides.
There are also some theme parks which are very special for certain people. For instance, last year I went to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at the Islands of Adventure in Orlando, Florida, where there are those shops that sell magic sweets and things in the Harry Potter books. It is great for Harry Potter fans.
There is also a fantastic tour of Hogwarts’ school, where you can meet characters in the books. All in all, there are many interesting theme parks in the world, which are really worth visiting. I hope you can have chances to visit the ones that attract you.

根据Libby部分中的“Plus, it must be noted that this app is only operational in North America.(另外,必须指出的是,这个应用程序只在北美运行。)”
B
Unlike most Singaporean university students, I did not have a 6 months exchange abroad. Nor did I quit my job and travel the world like so many travel bloggers. Instead, here’s my story.
It began in 2014 with a trip to Bali. While soaring on the flying fish at Kuta Beach, I thought, “This is the best feeling ever!” Before that last minute trip, I’ve never given much thought to traveling. Until 2011, when I was called to serve the nation and my precious annual leave were saved for whatever activities were cool. But after Bali, I’ve jumped out of a plane in Brazil, ran off a cliff in Vietnam, scaled the highest volcano in Indonesia, and couch-surfed in Australia. I’ve gotten lost, gotten sick. I’ve cried and smiled. And yet I yearn for it more: The feeling of plunging into the unknown. The freedom that comes with exploration. I’ve caught the travel bug.
2016 was a year of laying low. I paused traveling. I made sacrifices in my studies and social life. While I stayed at home and in school, feeling sad inside, I slowly took my time. I started an internet business that gives me the freedom to work from anywhere in the world. I learnt self-defence to protect myself on my travels. I even took Spanish and Salsa classes. All for my dream of returning to South America one day.
The day I booked a one-way ticket to Brazil, I decided to fully immerse in the local culture and record this journey. As I type this on the plane ride, I want people to know travel is not limited to short, unfulfilled weekend trips. I want people to know that it is possible to live a life of your dreams. I want people to know that it is a matter of the choices you make daily. I’ve definitely learned a lot and my perspectives have changed. One thing hasn’t though: my passion for travel.
24.Which moment made the author place much focus on the idea of traveling?
A.Seeing many travel bloggers quit their jobs to travel.
B.Feeling the excitement during the flying fish ride in Bali.
C.Being told that he saved up enough annual leave for traveling.
D.Deciding to take a last-minute trip after not traveling for years.
25.What does the underlined phrase “the travel bug” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.A technical error or problem. B.An insect causing discomfort.
C.A sudden strong interest or passion. D.Relxation that comes from long travels.
26.How did the author handle his dilemma between personal life and traveling dream in 2016?
A.By preparing skills for future traveling. B.By taking short, scattered weekend trips.
C.By pausing his travels and writing blogs. D.By working full-time in the travel industry.
27.Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A.Chasing the Dream: Heading to Brazil. B.From the Familiar to the Unknown
C.Travel Paused, but the Dream Lives On. D.My Travel Story: How it All Began
【答案】24.B 25.C 26.A 27.D
根据第二段“It began in 2014 with a trip to Bali. While soaring on the flying fish at Kuta Beach, I thought, “This is the best feeling ever!” Before that last minute trip, I’ve never given much thought to traveling.(这一切始于2014年的一次巴厘岛之旅。当我在库塔海滩的飞鱼上翱翔时,我想,“这是有史以来最好的感觉!”在那次旅行之前,我从来没有过多地考虑过旅行)”可知,在巴厘岛乘坐飞鱼的兴奋让作者有了旅行的想法。故选B项。
25.词句猜测题。根据划线短语上文“But after Bali, I’ve jumped out of a plane in Brazil, ran off a cliff in Vietnam, scaled the highest volcano in Indonesia, and couch-surfed in Australia. I’ve gotten lost, gotten sick. I’ve cried and smiled. And yet I yearn for it more: The feeling of plunging into the unknown. The freedom that comes with exploration.(但在巴厘岛之后,我在巴西从飞机上跳下来,在越南从悬崖上跑下来,在印度尼西亚爬上最高的火山,在澳大利亚沙发冲浪。我迷路了,生病了。我哭过也笑过。然而,我更渴望那种坠入未知世界的感觉。探索带来的自由)”可知,在巴厘岛旅行之后,作者迷上了旅行并且很渴望旅行带来的感受。所以,划线短语the travel bug指的是作者对旅行的强烈兴趣。故选C项。
26.推理判断题。根据第三段“2016 was a year of laying low. All for my dream of returning to South America one day.(2016年是低调的一年。 故选A项。
通读全文,并结合第一段“Unlike most Singaporean university students, I did not have a 6 months exchange abroad. Nor did I quit my job and travel the world like so many travel bloggers. Instead, here’s my story.(与大多数新加坡大学生不同,我没有6个月的海外交流。我也没有辞去工作,像许多旅游博主一样环游世界。下面是我的故事)”和第二段中“It began in 2014 with a trip to Bali. (这一切始于2014年的一次巴厘岛之旅)”可知,本文主要讲述了作者是如何开始并迷上旅行的以及作者感受。所以用D项“我的旅行故事:一切是如何开始的”作为本文的题目,与文章的主题相符合。故选D项。
C
Recently, we had the opportunity to explore a new architect-designed center for rewilding, located just a few miles from Loch Ness, Scotland and along the A887 road leading to the Isle of Skye. The center, which is easily accessible, has several sustainable features such as solar panels and reclaimed wood furniture in the café area. It is part of a larger project that includes another building offering 40 accessible rooms for those seeking an extended rewilding experience.
Upon entering, we were greeted by a sculpture by local artist Helen Denerley, which depicted (刻画) a tree with various native animals made from reclaimed metal. This piece set a warm and inviting tone, reflecting the center’s focus on rewilding and community. We then explored other areas, including a classroom, event spaces, and lively information panels that provided insights into rewilding, forest ecosystems, and local wildlife.
From the building, visitors can venture out onto accessible tracks and more challenging hikes to explore the surrounding landscape. The project places a strong emphasis on community and rewilding, celebrating local Gaelic heritage, history and wildlife. All these made it popular among both locals and rewilding enthusiasts.
We had the chance to speak with two friendly employees in the café, who were among the 20locals now employed thanks to the project. Their enthusiasm for the center and their role in its launch was evident.
This center is the first of its kind globally, aiming to introduce the concept of rewilding to a broader audience. The center represents a place of hope, with the goal of revitalizing (复兴) the Highlands’ potential to support nature’s return, offering enriching experiences, and addressing social, economic, and environmental challenges.
For anyone traveling to Loch Ness or the Isle of Skye, a visit to this innovative rewilding center is highly recommended to learn more about the landscapes and the exciting changes they are experiencing.
28.Why is the furniture of the café area mentioned in paragraph 1?
A.To illustrate the layout of the café. B.To highlight the center’s sustainable feature.
C.To exhibit the uniqueness of the local culture. D.To emphasize the wonderful design of the area.
29.What was part of the author’s experiences in the center?
A.Visiting event spaces. B.Observing local wildlife.
C.Meeting rewilding enthusiasts. D.Communicating with a sculptor.
30.What can be inferred about the rewilding project?
A.It’s challenging to carry out. B.It has created job opportunities.
C.It’s the initiative of an architect. D.It has inspired others to follow suit.
31.How is the purpose of the project?
A.Comprehensive. B.Unachievable. C.Flexible. D.Conservative.
【答案】28.B 29.A 30.B 31.A
根据第一段“Recently, we had the opportunity to explore a new architect-designed center for rewilding, located just a few miles from Loch Ness, Scotland and along the A887 road leading to the Isle of Skye. The center, which is easily accessible, has several sustainable features such as solar panels and reclaimed wood furniture in the café area. It is part of a larger project that includes another building offering 40 accessible rooms for those seeking an extended rewilding experience.(最近,我们有机会探索一个新的建筑师设计的野生动物再放归中心,它位于苏格兰尼斯湖几英里外,沿着通往斯凯岛的A887公路。该中心很容易进入,有几个可持续的特点,如太阳能电池板和咖啡区的再生木家具。这是一个更大项目的一部分,该项目还包括另一座建筑,为那些寻求扩展的野外体验的人提供40个无障碍房间)”可推知,第一段提到了咖啡区的家具是为了突出中心的可持续发展特色。故选B。
29.细节理解题。根据第二段“We then explored other areas, including a classroom, event spaces, and lively information panels that provided insights into rewilding, forest ecosystems, and local wildlife.(然后我们探索了其他区域,包括教室、活动空间和生动的信息面板,这些信息面板提供了对野生动物、森林生态系统和当地野生动物的见解)”可知,作者在中心的部分经历是参观活动场地。故选A。
根据第四段“We had the chance to speak with two friendly employees in the café, who were among the 20locals now employed thanks to the project.(我们有机会与咖啡馆里的两名友好的员工交谈,他们是该项目现在雇用的20名当地人中的一员)”可推知,野化项目创造了就业机会。故选B。
根据倒数第二段“The center represents a place of hope, with the goal of revitalizing (复兴) the Highlands’ potential to support nature’s return, offering enriching experiences, and addressing social, economic, and environmental challenges.(该中心代表着一个充满希望的地方,其目标是振兴高地支持自然回归的潜力,提供丰富的体验,并应对社会、经济和环境挑战)”可推知,这个项目的目的是综合性的。故选A。

PEOPLE who have had a painful experience may wish they could wipe the memory from their minds. Researchers at Johns Hopkins University, US, say that this may someday be possible.
A drug remains far off, but researchers have laid a foundation with their discovery that proteins can be removed from the brain’s fear center to cut memories forever.
Previous research had already shown that a special behavior therapy (治疗) could cut painful memories. But relapse (复发) was possible because the memory hadn’t necessarily disappeared.
By looking at that process, Richard Huganir and Roger Clem, two researchers from Johns Hopkins University, discovered a “window of vulnerability (脆弱的窗口)” when proteins are created. The proteins help signals travel within the brain as painful memories are made. Because the proteins are unstable, they can be easily removed with drugs or behavior therapy to cut memories.
Researchers used mice to find the window, but think the process would be the same in humans. They used electric shocks to make the mice fear a certain sound. The sound triggered (触发) the creation of the proteins, called calcium-permeable (钙通透性) AMPARS, which formed for a day or two in the fear centers of the mice’s brains.
The researchers are working on ways to reopen the window by recalling (唤醒) the painful memory and using drugs to remove the protein. They published their report online last month in Science Express.
Their research has drawn interest and concern from experts in mental healthcare.
Kate Farinholt, a mental health expert with the National Alliance on Mental Illness, Maryland, US, said many people suffering from a painful event might benefit from erasing a memory. “Erasing a memory and then everything bad built on that is an amazing idea, and I can see all sorts of potential,” she said.
But there are a lot of unanswered questions, too.
“Completely deleting a memory is a little scary. How do you remove a memory without removing a part of someone’s life,” Farinholt said. “And is it best to do that, considering that people grow and learn from their experiences?”
32.What have researchers at Johns Hopkins University found recently?
A.A new drug to erase painful memories from human brains.
B.A special behavior therapy to erase painful memories.
C.Removing certain proteins from the brain can wipe painful memories.
D.Erasing memory damages a patient’s brain functions.

【答案】32.C 33.B 34.C 35.A
根据第二段“A drug remains far off, but researchers have laid a foundation with their discovery that proteins can be removed from the brain’s fear center to cut memories forever. (一种药物仍然遥遥无期,但研究人员已经奠定了基础,他们发现可以从大脑的恐惧中心移除蛋白质,从而永远消除记忆)”可知,约翰霍普金斯大学的研究人员最近发现,从大脑中移除某些蛋白质可以消除痛苦的记忆。故选C。
33.细节理解题。根据第四段中“Because the proteins are unstable, they can be easily removed with drugs or behavior therapy to cut memories. (因为这些蛋白质不稳定,所以它们很容易被药物或行为疗法去除,从而消除记忆)”可知,大脑中蛋白质的不稳定性使得消除痛苦记忆成为可能。故选B。
34.细节理解题。根据第五段中“They used electric shocks to make the mice fear a certain sound. The sound triggered (触发) the creation of the proteins, called calcium-permeable (钙通透性) AMPARS, which formed for a day or two in the fear centers of the mice’s brains. (他们用电击的方式让老鼠对某种声音产生恐惧。这种声音触发了一种名为钙通透性 α- 氨基 - 3 - 羟基 - 5 - 甲基 - 4 - 异恶唑丙酸受体(AMPARS)的蛋白质的产生,这些蛋白质在老鼠大脑的恐惧中枢中会持续形成一两天。)”以及第六段中“The researchers are working on ways to reopen the window by recalling (唤醒) the painful memory and using drugs to remove the protein. (研究人员正在研究通过回忆痛苦的记忆和使用药物去除蛋白质来重新打开这个窗口的方法。)”可知,对老鼠进行的实验过程为:先让老鼠害怕某种声音,然后老鼠大脑中产生恐惧蛋白,接着让老鼠回忆痛苦的记忆,最后去除恐惧蛋白。因此,正确的顺序是b-c-d-a。故选C。
35.推理判断题。根据最后一段““Completely deleting a memory is a little scary. How do you remove a memory without removing a part of someone’s life,” Farinholt said. “And is it best to do that, considering that people grow and learn from their experiences?” (“完全删除一段记忆有点可怕。你要如何在不抹去一个人生活的一部分的情况下消除一段记忆呢?”Farinholt说,“而且考虑到人们是从自身经历中成长和学习的,这样做真的是最好的选择吗?”)”可知,Kate Farinholt认为这样做人们可能会失去从糟糕的经历中吸取教训的机会。故选A。
How to stay fit while traveling rarely scores high on our priority list. Sometimes it is not that we’re not motivated to stay fit or have no time. I believe the issue is that we are out of our regular “home routine”. 36 Our brain simply can’t link the new environment to our usual habits and puts itself in “explorer’s” mode. How can we stay fit while traveling?
Have a strong vision. The best way to create motivation to stay fit is something you can visualize. If you have the visual, it is good. 37 If it helps, write it on a piece of paper and put it in your wallet. This will serve as a vision for you. Once you focus on the vision and consistently think about it, things get easier.
Prepare a “travel routine” ahead of time. Consistency is the most important part of the training process. 38 I found that having a “travel routine” helps to signal the brain that from the organizational perspective nothing has changed. It doesn’t have to be very detailed and can be as simple as a set of principles, like exercising in the morning or not eating too much after 6:00 p.m.
39 The easiest way to stay fit while traveling is to move and make active lifestyle a habit. Walk a couple of stops instead of taking the public transport. Use the stairs instead of an elevator. If there’s a nice viewpoint, look for a way to hike to it rather than drive to it. Sure, it will be tough at first, but our bodies are good at adapting to anything. 40
A.Go for a run.
B.Walk and explore more.
C.In this process, you can have great fun.
D.People, language, food—everything is different.
E.Picture it, feel it and, most importantly, focus on it.
F.Gradually, you’ll become stronger and start enjoying it.
G.Yet, traveling tends to break our regular pattern and change our focus.

37.根据上文“If you have the visual, it is good. Picture it, feel it and, most importantly, focus on it.(如果你有视觉目标,那很好。想象它,感受它,最重要的是专注于它)可知,选项承接上文说明建立视觉目标的重要性。故E选项“建立视觉目标并专注于它是关键”。故选E。
38.根据下文“I found that having a “travel routine” helps to signal the brain that from the organizational perspective nothing has changed.(我发现,养成“旅行习惯”有助于向大脑发出信号:从组织的角度来看,什么都没有改变)”推知,旅行会打破我们的常规生活。
39.根据下文“The easiest way to stay fit while traveling is to move and make active lifestyle a habit. Walk a couple of stops instead of taking the public transport. Use the stairs instead of an elevator.(在旅行中保持健康最简单的方法就是运动,让积极的生活方式成为一种习惯。步行几站,而不是乘坐公共交通工具。走楼梯而不是坐电梯)”可知。本段主要在讲要运动起来。故B选项“散步和探索更多”切题,为本段的标题。故选B。
40.根据上文“Sure, it will be tough at first, but our bodies are good at adapting to anything.(当然,一开始会很困难,但我们的身体擅长适应任何事情)”可知,逐选项承接上文说明接下来会发生什么,F项“逐渐地你会变得更强壮并开始享受它”切题。故选F。

As we live through life, we tend to get caught up in our individual world, our problems — our life. When we 41 our world to include others in a meaningful way, by making a positive difference in their life, we increase our experience at the same time.
Think back on a time when someone made a difference in your life.

It wasn’t 45 , but what that person did made a lasting impression on me. She was a beautiful, caring soul who was willing to help a stranger in a (an) 46 situation. That happened over forty years ago and I remember it as 47 as if it was yesterday.

I’ve often wondered if it was because I was smiling, which I 49 to do all the time, or because they were smiling to be 50 , which encouraged me to smile as well. It has probably been some of both. In 51 case, that simple gesture (a smile) makes a difference in my day.
There are 52 ways to make a significant difference in another’s life. The question is: Are we doing it? It does not 53 anything, but it does require some effort on our part. I have found that as I do this consistently, the returns go far beyond the energy required to do the deed. Looking for ways to brighten another person’s day raises our vibration (共鸣), and when we act on it, we assist the other person to raise their vibration as well — it is 54 to each other.

When I first came to this big city alone, I felt both excited and nervous. This city is famous for its busy life and opportunities, but everything here was new to me. I stood at the entrance of the subway station, looking at the busy crowd, feeling a bit lost.
I needed to go to an important meeting, but I knew nothing about the subway lines. I tried to find the right route in the station, but the complex signs made me more confused. I watched people hurrying around, each with a clear destination, while I felt like a lost child, not knowing where to go.
After hesitating for a long time, I finally gathered the courage to ask a friendly-looking lady for directions. However, my words were unclear, and she just frowned (皱眉) slightly and continued on her way. I felt a wave of disappointment, and my anxiety grew. Time was ticking away, and I was worried about missing the meeting.
Just when I was about to give up, I saw a sign that read “City Center Direction”. I thought this might be the way I needed to go, so I followed the sign. However, I soon found myself in a completely unfamiliar place, and everything around me made me feel even more lost. I began to doubt my decision, feeling helpless.
At that moment, a young volunteer noticed my trouble. He was wearing a red vest (背心) with the words “City Volunteer” on it and was standing not far away. He saw my hesitation and walked to me.
“Hi, you look a bit lost. Do you need help?” he asked with a smile.
I nodded, feeling warmth in my heart. After listening to my problem patiently, he explained the subway lines and how to get to my destination in detail. His voice was gentle and clear, making me feel at ease.

“Come with me, and I’ll take you to the right platform,” he said. Without hesitation, I trailed behind him, my anxiety melting away with every step. As we navigated through the bustling station, he pointed out important landmarks and shared handy tips for riding the subway. “This intersection can be tricky,” he noted, guiding me past a maze of signs. “Always follow the blue line for downtown.” Thanks to his clear instructions, we reached the platform just as the train arrived. Before boarding, I thanked him profusely. He simply smiled and replied, “Glad I could help. Good luck with your meeting!”
Watching him walking away, I felt warmth in my heart again. His unexpected kindness turned my desperate situation around, reminding me that kindness exists even in the most impersonal places. As the train pulled out of the station, I realized this encounter was more than just getting directions — it was a reassuring welcome to my new life in the city. His helpful spirit inspired me to pay it forward, and I resolved to approach challenges with newfound confidence.

33.What makes it possible to erase painful memories according to Paragraph 4?
A.The way the brain cells are created.
B.The unstable character of the proteins in the brain.
C.The strength of the signals the proteins send.
D.The drugs that can stop the formation of memories.
34.Which of the following shows the stages of the process done on mice?
a. removal of fear proteins
b. making mice fear a certain sound
c. fear proteins created in mice brains
d. making mice recall painful memories
A.a-b-c-d B.d-a-c-b C.b-c-d-a D.c-b-d-a
35.What is Kate Farinholt’s opinion of the research?
A.People may lose the chance to learn from their bad experiences.
B.The research will be a great breakthrough in treating painful memories.
C.People could suffer long-term memory loss.
D.People could forget happy memories as well.

“When we feel love and kindness toward others, it not only makes others feel loved and cared for, but it helps us also to develop inner happiness and peace.”
As we live through life, we tend to get caught up in our individual world, our problems — our life. When we 41 our world to include others in a meaningful way, by making a positive difference in their life, we increase our experience at the same time.

Other examples are the numerous times I have had people smile at me, which 48 my day.
Make a difference in someone’s life today, and 55 doing so every day. Today is a perfect time to start! If you are already doing so, bravo!

Four Top Audiobook (有声读物) Apps
Scribd
If you’re looking to combine your audiobook listening with e-books and news publications, Scribd might be the app for you. Its massive library includes a healthy balance of traditionally published books, bestsellers, and Scribd originals. Scribd also runs an associated program, which gives you one free month for every friend you invite, and gives your friend a two-month trial. If you're a writer, Scribd also has an open publishing platform to help you self-publish your audiobooks in minutes.
Kobo Books
Best known as an e-book retailer, Kobo Books also offers audiobooks on its platform. You get unlimited access to over 100,000 audiobooks in its library for only a few dollars. The app also does a good job organizing your purchased books, and its in-app statistics are brilliant for readers, knowing your reading habits in detail, while suggesting new recommended titles based on your history.
eStories
With over 120,000 different types of audiobooks to choose from, eStories starts off with a half-price offer for your first 3 months, and then switches to a higher-priced subscription. Members get discounted prices on additional audiobooks as well as other benefits such as extra credits and extended periods of use. As a member, you also get 30 days to return a book if you don’t like it. Additionally, the app provides unlimited storage for your own audio that you can upload.
Libby
Libby lets you borrow e-books and audiobooks from your local library. A library membership lets you access several thousand audiobooks on its app entirely free of cost.

A.It’s challenging to carry out. B.It has created job opportunities.
C.It’s the initiative of an architect. D.It has inspired others to follow suit.
31.How is the purpose of the project?
A.Comprehensive. B.Unachievable. C.Flexible. D.Conservative.

Think back on a time when someone made a difference in your life.

It wasn’t 45 , but what that person did made a lasting impression on me. She was a beautiful, caring soul who was willing to help a stranger in a (an) 46 situation. Other examples are the numerous times I have had people smile at me, which 48 my day.
Make a difference in someone’s life today, and 55 doing so every day. Today is a perfect time to start! If you are already doing so, bravo!
