Marie’s family had many troubles. Her mother was seriously ill. When Marie was 6, her father lost his job and their home. They moved to a small flat. It was noisy and crowded. But the noise did not stop her from studying. In 1883, Marie finished high school. She dreamed of becoming a scientist. But in Poland, girls were not allowed to go to college. And her family did not have enough money to send her to a university in another country. Reaching her dream seemed impossible. Marie and her sister Bronya decided to study in France. Marie would work to pay for Bronya’s schooling. Then, once Bronya left school, she would work and pay for Marie’s schooling. Finally, in 1891, Marie’s dream came true. She entered a university in Paris. In three years, she got advanced degrees in Physics and Maths. She also met a scientist named Pierre Curie and they married in 1895. Marie studied a metal element called uranium. She wanted to study uranium because scientists knew it gave off unseeable rays of energy. She wondered where the rays came from. Marie began testing rocks to find out if other elements gave off rays, too. Marie concluded two elements (元素) found in the rocks were radioactive. They were thorium and uranium. She called the energy “radioactivity”. Marie’s experiments were so exciting that she and Pierre soon began working together. One day, Marie began testing a black rock. Marie discovered a new element in the rock. She named it “polonium”. After Marie took away the polonium, the rock was still radioactive. She knew another radioactive element was inside the rock. She called it “radium”. In 1903, Marie and Pierre received the Nobel Prize in Physics. Marie was the first woman to receive a Nobel Prize. In 1911, Marie accepted the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. She was the first person to receive two Nobel Prizes. Yet the work made her sick. On July 4, 1934, Marie Curie died of a blood disease that may be caused by radiation. Marie’s discoveries helped save millions of lives and changed the scientific world. Radiation has been used to treat cancer. Her ideas about the atom helped lead to the discovery of nuclear energy. 27.What happened to Marie? A.She received the Noble Prizes in Physics and Maths. B.She was born in a rich family in Poland. This scene was filmed by drones in January at Atka Bay, Antarctica. These videos were shown as part of a documentary series called Secrets of the Penguins. This jump seems brave but could be dangerous to these young penguins. According to National Geographic, emperor penguins usually raise their babies on sea ice platforms (平台). When these fledglings (幼鸟) are 5 months old, they lose their baby feathers and grow adult feathers, which are waterproof. Not long after, the babies have to begin their first swim in the ocean to hunt for themselves. Normally they just need to jump from the sea ice, which is less than a meter high. However, the fast-melting ice in Antarctica changes the situation. In February 2023, the total area of sea ice reached a record low of 1.91 million square kilometers. “Emperor penguins need sea ice for their raising their young, it’s the stable platform they use to bring up their young,” Peter Fretwell from the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), UK’s national polar research institute, told the BBC. If the ice platform melts or breaks apart before penguin babies develop their waterproof (keep dry in water) feathers, they are more likely to drown or freeze to death. For this reason, emperor penguins are now choosing to raise their babies on the ice shelf, which is firmly connected to the land. As a result, babies must face the challenge of jumping off a high cliff. Michelle LaRue, a scientist at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, told National Geographic that when the baby penguins reach the cliff face, they seem to think, “This doesn’t look like a fun jump, but I guess I have to do it.” Alarmingly, according to Live Science, the decrease in the ice has caused thousands of emperor penguin babies to die in West Antarctica in 2022. That may force more emperors to make their nests on ice shelves, said Fretwell. “It’s heartbreaking to think that the whole species may be gone if climate change continues on the path at the moment,” he added. 30.Why do emperor penguin babies jump off cliffs? A.They want to travel across the ocean to the other side. B.They are trying to avoid being caught by other animals. C.They are celebrating getting their adult feathers which are waterproof. D.They have no other way to enter the water to find their own food. 31.What causes emperor penguins to raise their young on ice shelves? A.Rising sea levels. B.The rapid melting of sea ice. C.More available food for the babies. D.Bigger size of ice shelves. 32.What is the main worry that Fretwell had about emperor penguins? A.They takes less time to raise babies. B.Their skill in finding food on their own. C.The chance that they might disappear forever. D.Their growing need for frozen ocean water. 33.How does the author organize the information in the article? A.By comparing emperor penguins to other animals. B.By describing a problem and explaining its causes and effects. C.By listing the steps emperor penguins take to raise their young. D.By providing a timeline of events in Antarctica. 根据第三段“Not long after, the babies have to begin their first swim in the ocean to hunt for themselves. Normally they just need to jump from the sea ice, which is less than a meter high.”和第五段“For this reason, emperor penguins are now choosing to raise their babies on the ice shelf, which is firmly connected to the land. As a result, babies must face the challenge of jumping off a high cliff.” 根据第四段“the fast-melting ice in Antarctica changes the situation.”和第五段“Emperor penguins need sea ice for their raising their young…If the ice platform melts or breaks apart before penguin babies develop their waterproof feathers…For this reason, emperor penguins are now choosing to raise their babies on the ice shelf”可知,海冰的快速融化导致帝企鹅选择在冰架上养育幼崽。故选B。 32.细节理解题。根据文中“Peter Fretwell…told the BBC…‘It’s heartbreaking to think that the whole species may be gone if climate change continues on the path at the moment,’ he added.” 四、 阅读表达(共10分, 第1-3题每小题2分, 第4小题4分) At-home Farming in Cities Farming used to be an attraction in the countryside. But nowadays, farms can even be found high up on balconies (阳台) in cities. According to a recent report, sales of vegetable seeds, soil, and gardening tools have doubled compared with the same period last year. Among the people buying them, most were born after 1995. Zhang Chao, from Anhui province, is a young “city farmer” in his 20s. He took up the hobby of planting when he lived with his grandpa in the countryside. “Being a farmer his whole life, my grandpa likes to plant seasonal vegetables in our backyard garden,” Zhang said. “Inspired (启发) by his strong interest, I also learned to grow my own vegetables.” Though sometimes farming can be really tiring, Zhang said he had a sense of achievement when he saw seeds gradually grow into plants. Although Zhang has recently moved to a place without a yard, he continues his hobby with a balcony garden. “Growing fruits and vegetables not only brings me delicious and safe food, but also reminds me of the happy moments with my grandpa,” said Zhang. Unlike Zhang, Fang Min from Shenzhen considers planting a garden as a good way to relax and develop patience. To reduce much pressure from schoolwork, the 16-year-old girl started planting vegetables on her balcony in 2021. Most of the seeds were given by her friends. She just planted them and waited patiently. After half a year, her balcony became a “small garden”, covered by different flowers and herbs (香草). After long hours of homework, Fang likes to walk around her balcony garden. “Seeing the various colors and breathing fresh air, I feel closer to nature and refreshed,” Fang said. “The vegetables and herbs may not be the main food on our table, but they will surely add different tastes to our dishes and add excitement to our busy days.” Planting vegetables is now more than just a way to survive. C.She discovered the two new elements were radioactive. D.She went to university in France because she loved France. 28.What caused Marie to study uranium? A.The experiment was very exciting. B.The scientists knew nothing about uranium. C.She wanted to know where the rays came from. D.She wanted to work together with her husband. 29.What’s the purpose of the passage? A.To introduce Marie’s life. B.To introduce Marie’s dream. C.To introduce the Nobel Prize. D.To introduce polonium and radium. D Hundreds of baby emperor penguins (企鹅) jumped off a 15-meter cliff (悬崖), as high as a five-story building. 第二部分 本部分共5题, 共20分。根据题目要求, 完成相应任务。 四、 阅读表达(共10分, 第1-3题每小题2分, 第4小题4分) At-home Farming in Cities Farming used to be an attraction in the countryside. It also brings joy and purpose to young people’s lives. 34.Where can farms be found in cities nowadays? 35.When did Zhang Chao take up the hobby of planting? 36.How does Fang Min feel when she walks around her balcony garden? 37.What do you think of at-home farming in cities? C.She discovered the two new elements were radioactive. D.She went to university in France because she loved France. 28.What caused Marie to study uranium? A.The experiment was very exciting. D Hundreds of baby emperor penguins (企鹅) jumped off a 15-meter cliff (悬崖), as high as a five-story building. 第二部分 本部分共5题, 共20分。根据题目要求, 完成相应任务。 四、 阅读表达(共10分, 第1-3题每小题2分, 第4小题4分) At-home Farming in Cities Farming used to be an attraction in the countryside. It also brings joy and purpose to young people’s lives. 34.Where can farms be found in cities nowadays? 35.When did Zhang Chao take up the hobby of planting? 36.How does Fang Min feel when she walks around her balcony garden? 37.What do you think of at-home farming in cities?
