Scientists in China have developed a new method to produce water from lunar soil (月壤). This could help with future missions on the moon and make living there easier.
Researchers studied the soil brought back by China’s Chang’e-5. They found that lunar soil has minerals (矿物质) with hydrogen (氢) added by solar wind over millions of years. When lunar soil is heated to about 1,000℃, the hydrogen reacts (产生反应) with Fe2O3 in the minerals to produce water. Just 1g of lunar soil can produce up to 0.076g of water. This means that one ton of lunar soil could make over 100 bottles of water-enough for 50 people to drink in one day!
Earlier studies show that lunar soil has a small amount of water between 0.0001% and 0.02% of its weight. With the new method, the same amount of lunar soil could produce about 250 times more water.
The scientists suggested using mirrors to heat the lunar soil and then collecting the water vapor (水蒸气) to store it. The water can then be separated into O₂ to breathing and hydrogen for energy.
This discovery is an important step towards building a lunar research station. Water is needed for living, and this method could offer the necessary water to future Moon missions.
50. What does the underlined word “missions” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. 任务 B. 容量 C. 领土 D. 考古
51. What temperature is required to produce water from lunar soil?
A. 800℃. B. 1,000℃. C. 1,200℃. D. 1,500℃.
52. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The role of solar wind in adding hydrogen to lunar soil.
B. The importance of water for future Moon missions.
C. A new method to produce water from lunar soil.
D. The discovery of minerals in the lunar soil.

A training program was recently started in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan Province, to protect Asian elephants and help increase biodiversity (生物多样性) protection. The program, held in Mengla County, aimed to offer protectors skills in elephant protection and set up an early warning network. Over 50 people, including elephant monitors and forest protectors, attended the training program.
The program was a cooperation between Mengla County and IFAW, which included topics such as Asian elephant ecology (生态学), and safety methods. The program wants grassroots (基层人员) to know more about ecological knowledge and helps develop community cooperation to reduce problems between humans and elephants.
“Human-elephant problems are serious sometimes. Elephants are now not afraid of humans and visit farmers’ houses. It isn’t bad news—they are friendly and people like them. But sometimes the elephants eat crops in farmers’ fields. We should protect not only the cute animals but also farmers’ money,” one worker said.
Asian elephants monitor Luo Chen shared that the training gives valuable ideas on elephant protection, which he plans to use in his monitoring work.
In China, Asian elephants are mainly found in the southwestern area of Yunnan Province. Through years of efforts, their population has increased from about 150 in the 1990s to over 300 today in our country.

A. 任务 B. 容量 C. 领土 D. 考古

A. The role of solar wind in adding hydrogen to lunar soil.
B. The importance of water for future Moon missions.
C. A new method to produce water from lunar soil.

Once upon a time, a little ant named Andy lived at the foot of a huge mountain. Every day, Andy would look up at the mountain and dream of reaching the top. The other ants laughed at him, saying, “You’ re too small! The mountain is too big!”
But Andy didn’t listen. Every morning, he would start climbing with a strong will. Along the way, he met countless difficulties. Some days, heavy rain made the rocks even more slippery (滑) than usual, and he’d slide back down several inches (英寸) after just a few steps. Other days, the cold wind would almost blow him off the path. No matter how hard it was, Andy never gave up.
One day, after many months of trying, Andy finally reached the top. From there, he could see the whole world! The wide forest, the silver rivers, and the colorful grassland spread far away before him. The other ants were amazed when they heard the news.
