B It was not turning out to be the great fishing trip we had imagined. It certainly was not the one Father had promised. All day the rain beat against the roof of our cabin. Father sat at the window, looking out over the lake. My older brother Jeremy, who had recently turned sixteen years old, lay on the bed, looking up at the ceiling. I paced the room, occasionally glancing toward Father to see if there was any sign that the rain would let up. “I wish we’d never come out to this boring place,” Jeremy said. I stopped pacing and looked at Father. He gave no sign that he had heard, and I hoped he hadn’t. This trip meant a lot to him. He used to come out here with own father. I started pacing again. “I mean, if we’d stayed home, at least I could watch TV, go out with my friends or play my guitar,” Jeremy continued. Silence continued for some time. I kept pacing, imagining the trip I had dreamed of before the bad weather had set in. I saw us in the boat, anchor dropped in a calm bay casting our lines toward shore, the way Father had described it when he was trying to convince Jeremy to come along. Father stood up and turned to face us. He smiled at me. “Come on, get up, Jeremy,” he said. “Let’s go fishing, boys.” He picked up his fishing rod and the tool box, opened the door, and walked out into the rain. Jeremy and I watched Father walk down the pathway toward the dock (码头),the wind whipping (打) at his hair, the rain wetting his clothes. Jeremy shook his head. “He's crazy if he thinks I’m going with him,” he said. “Maybe I would have when I was a little kid, but not now,” he said. I waited for a while, unsure of what to do, looking out the open door at Father, who was walking onto the dock, facing against the storm. Jeremy couldn’t believe I picked up my rod and walked out into the storm after Father. I couldn’t quite hear what Jeremy said because of the wind in my ears, but I heard his footsteps behind me as he began to follow me out to the boat. 4. What does the underlined phrase “let up” in Paragraph 2 mean? A. Stop. B. Continue. C. Hit. D. Arrive. 5. Why was the fishing trip important for the author’s father? A. He had never fished in the rain. B. It’s his son Jeremy’s first fishing trip. C. He and his own father usually went fishing there. D. He wanted to have a better relationship with his sons. 6. What can we know about Jeremy? A. He doesn’t enjoy fishing. B. He dislikes outdoor activities. C. He is addicted to playing the guitar. D. He showed no interest in the fishing trip. 7. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text? A. To express the fondness for a particular day. B. To describe a fishing experience in the rain. C. To reflect on the old family tradition of fishing. D. To recall the generation gap between father and brother. C It’s a sweet moment, as a chimp reaches up to kiss his mother’s face. The touching photo was taken by the famous conservationist and activist Jane Goodall in 1993 in Gombe National Park in northwest Tanzania where she has studied chimpanzees for more than six decades. The image is part of Vital Impacts consisting of a group of 100 photographers. The women-led non-profit was founded by award-winning photographer Ami Vitale and visual journalist Eileen Mignoni. They are selling fine arts images, most of which focus on wildlife and nature, with earnings benefiting conservation organizations including Jane Goodall Institute’s Roots and Shoots program. “Our purpose is to use photography to create awareness and understanding; to help us see that the survival of the planet is closely connected with our own survival. As photographers, we have a huge opportunity to inform and influence change, but pressing the shutter (快门) is just the start,” Vitale said. “For an image to have significance, it needs to reach people. To this end, we are working to get the photographs of Vital Impacts photographers and our students into high-profile media and exhibitions around the world.” The organization gives special attention to photographers who are committed to the planet. Funds will be used to support global conservation and environmental initiatives and the group will offer two $20,000 environmental storytelling awards. Vital Impacts has raised more than $1.5 million from the sale of fine art prints since the organization was set up in late 2021. Some of its profits were donated to the organization Direct Relief, which shipped more than 1,400 tons of medical supplies worth $545 million to support 351 healthcare equipment in disaster zones. Other profits were able to provide fuel and vehicle assistance to support wildlife corridors (廊道), a monitoring program, and the restoration of the Snake River in the Pacific Northwest. 8. Why did the author mention the touching photo in paragraph one? A. To lead in Vital Impacts. B. To introduce Jane Goodall’s hobby. C. To share a sweet image. D. To introduce chimps’ touching behavior. 9. Which of the following statements about Vital Impacts is true? A. It aims to make profits by selling fine arts images. B. D They say procrastination (拖延) is the thief of time — actually deadlines are. New research has found that if you want someone to help you out with something, it is best not to set a deadline at all. But if you do set a deadline, make it short. Professor Stephen Knowles tested the effect of deadline length on task completion for their research.Participants were invited to complete an online survey concerning a charity donation. They were given either one week, one month, or no deadline to respond. Professor Knowles says although the topic of the survey is about charity, the results are true of any situation where someone asks another person for help. The study found responses to the survey were lowest for the one-month deadline and highest when no deadline was specified. No deadline and the one-week deadline led to many early responses, while a long deadline appeared to give people permission to procrastinate, and then forget. Professor Knowles wasn’t surprised to find that specifying a shorter deadline increased the chances of receiving a response compared to a longer deadline. However, he did find it interesting that they received the most responses when no deadline was specified. “We interpret this as evidence that specifying a longer deadline, as opposed to a short deadline or no deadline at all, removes the urgency to act,” he says. “People therefore put off undertaking the task, and since they are inattentive or forget, postponing it results in lower response rates.” He says of the research that it is possible that not specifying a deadline might still have led participants to assume that there is an unspoken deadline. Professor Knowles hopes his research can help reduce the amount of procrastinating people do. “Many people procrastinate. They have the best intentions of helping someone out, but just do not get around to doing it.” 12. Why did Professor Knowles do the research? A. To study the role a deadline plays in procrastination. B. To find out whether people are interested in charity. C. To attract public attention to the effects of procrastination. D. To test the effect of procrastination on task completion. 13. What most likely leads to procrastination? A. No deadlines. B. Short deadlines. C. Specific deadlines. D. Long deadlines. 14. What’ s the attitude of Professor Knowles to the findings of the study? A. Interested. B. Conservative. C. Confused. D. Unsurprised. 15. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A Procrastination — the Thief of Time B. Procrastination — the Urgent Problem to Solve C. Deadline — the Key to Reducing Procrastination D. Deadline — a Result of Procrastination Group discussions are a way of expressing your thoughts and opinions with other people. I had woken early that morning, and had not been able to sleep on the long ride from Riverside High, thinking about that day’s race, the Eye Opener. I had never raced in a state-wide race before. Over thirty high school teams ran, along with quite a few colleges. The rest of my team and I unloaded the bus, and we relaxed and waited for our race patiently. “Start warming up,” our coach told us, roughly forty-five minutes after we arrived. After finishing our stretches, we headed over to the starting line, eager for the race to begin. The starter walked to the middle of the field. “There will be two commands,” his voice boomed, ‘‘Runners set, then the gun. If you hear another shot, return to the starting line to start again. ” My heart raced as I got my legs ready to race. “Runners set!” the starter shouted Bam! The gun fired, and he rushed out of our way. Adrenaline (肾上腺素)rushed through my body as I raced through the mass of runners. As I rounded the first turn, my schoolmates greeted me with heartening shouts. Then, in what felt like only one minute, I arrived at the one mile mark. “6’10”, a man declared as I ran by. I tried to ignore him, but my legs began to burn as I realized I had run a mile and still had two to go. I slowed down my pace, for I knew the second mile was the worst of all three. Minutes later, I felt horrible. My legs ached, feeling like lead blocks. My vision was clouded as sweat dropped down into my eyes, and my arms felt as if they would fall off if I swung them one more time. Just as I almost reached my limit, a boy passed me. He also seemed to have lost strength but soon he was a little ahead of me. I gathered up my strength to speed up but suddenly fell to the ground. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ In the last mile, seeing the athletes passing us one by one, I asked the boy to run without me. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 成都石室阳安学校高2023级(高二)下学期英语半期考试试题 (卷面分值:150分 考试时间:120分钟) 注意事项: 1. How much is the shirt? All day the rain beat against the roof of our cabin. Father sat at the window, looking out over the lake. My older brother Jeremy, who had recently turned sixteen years old, lay on the bed, looking up at the ceiling. I paced the room, occasionally glancing toward Father to see if there was any sign that the rain would let up. “I wish we’d never come out to this boring place,” Jeremy said. I stopped pacing and looked at Father. He gave no sign that he had heard, and I hoped he hadn’t. This trip meant a lot to him. He used to come out here with own father. I started pacing again “I mean, if we’d stayed home, at least I could watch TV, go out with my friends or play my guitar,” Jeremy continued. 4. 8. A. Procrastination — the Thief of Time B. Procrastination — the Urgent Problem to Solve C. Deadline — the Key to Reducing Procrastination D. Deadline — a Result of Procrastination 【答案】12. A 13. D 14. D 15. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 I gathered up my strength to speed up but suddenly fell to the ground. My world was clouded by total darkness. How I wish the ground to crack and swallow me! I could feel everybody was staring at me, widening their mouths and not being able to utter a word. The sudden silence brought sharp pain in my knees and “failure” was the only word flashing in my mind. Then the silence was broken by a deep voice, “You won’t give up so easily, will you? ” The boy ahead of me turned back and pulled me up. “Let’s run to the finishing line together!” The second mile saw its end while we ran shoulder to shoulder. In the last mile, seeing the athletes passing us one by one, I asked the boy to rum without me. “You can win a place if you go by yourself.” I looked at him in the eyes with sweat blurring my sight. The boy breathing heavily, drops of sweat rolled down his face. He shook his head saying,“Winning a place is not that important, isn’t it? ”. Then we smiled at each other as if we had been the only runners. The last mile seemed shorter and we were relieved when we passed the finishing line together with thunderous applause. I knew they cheered for us not for winning a race but for something more important. 词汇激活 行为类 ①凝视:stare at/gaze at ②(使)变宽:widen/extend/enlarge ③赢得一席之地:win a place/earn a slot ④知道:know/realize/comprehend 情绪类 ①绝望:clouded by total darkness/hopeless/desperate ②如释重负:relieved./in relief 【点睛】[高分句型1]Then we smiled at each other as if we had been the only runners.(as if从句中使用虚拟语气) [高分句型2]The last mile seemed shorter and we were relieved when we passed the finishing line together with thunderous applause.(运用了when引导的时间状语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
