“Did you hear what happened to Adam Last Friday?” Lindsey whispers to Tori.
With her eyes shining. Tori brags, “You bet I did, Sean told me two days ago.”
Who are Lindsey and Tori talking about? It just happened to be yours truly. Adam Freedman. I can tell you that what they are saying is not nice and not even true. Still, Lindscy and Tori aren’t very different from most students here at Linton High School, including me. Many of our conversations are gossip(闲话). I have noticed three effects of gossip: it can hurt people, it can give gossipers a strange kind of satisfaction, and it can cause social pressures in a group.
An important negative effect of gossip is that it can hurt the person being talked about. Usually gossip spreads information about a topic— breakups, trouble at home, even dropping out — at a person would rather keep secret. The more embarrassing or shameful the secret is, the juicier the gossip it makes. Probably the worst type of gossip is the absolute lie. People often think of gossipers as harmless, but cruel lies can cause pain.
If we know that gossip can be harmful, then why do so many of us do it? The answer lies in another effect of gossip: the satisfaction it gives us. Sharing the latest rumor(传言) can make a person feel important because he or she knows something that others don’t. Similarly, hearing the latest rumor can make a person feel like part of the “in group.” In other words, gossip is satisfying because it gives people a sense of belonging or even superiority(优越).
Gossip also can have a third effect: it strengthens unwritten, unspoken rules about how people should act. Professor David Wilson explains that gossip is important in policing behaviors in a group. Translated into high school terms, this means that if everybody you hang around with is laughing at what John wore or what Jane said, then you can bet that wearing or saying something similar will get you the same kind of negative attention. The do’s and don’ts conveyed through gossip will never show up in any student handbook.
The effects of gossip vary depending on the situation. The next time you feel the urge to spread the latest news, think about why you want to gossip and what effects your “juicy story” might have.
4. The author uses a conversation at the beginning of the passage to ______.
A. clarify his writing purpose B. present an argument
C. describe the characters D. introduce a topic
5. An important negative effect of gossip is that it ______.
A. causes unpleasant experiences B. embarrasses the listener
C. spreads information around D. breaks up relationships
6. Professor David Wilson thinks that gossip can ______.
A. help people watch their own behaviors
B. provide students with written rules
C. force school to improve student handbooks
D. attract the police’s attention to group behaviors
7. What advice does the author give in the last paragraph?
A. Never become a gossiper. B. Think twice before you gossip.
C Don’t let gossip turn into lies. D. Stay away from gossipers.

Sports can help you keep fit and get in touch with nature. However, whether you are on the mountains, in the waves, or on the grassland, you should be aware that your sport of choice might have a great influence on the environment.
Some sports are resource-hungry. Golf, as you may know, eats up not only large areas of countryside, but also tons of water. Besides, all sorts of chemicals and huge amounts of energy are used to keep its courses(球场)in good condition. This causes major environmental effects. For example, in the dry regions of Portugal and Spain, golf is often held responsible for serious water shortages in some local areas.
There are many environmentally-friendly sports. Power walking is one of them that you could take up today. You don’t need any special equipment except a good pair of shoes; and you don’t have to worry about resources and your purse. Simple and free, power walking can also keep you fit. If you walk regularly, it will be good for your heart and bones. Experts say that 20 minutes of power walking daily can make you feel less anxious, sleep well and have better weight control.
Whatever sport you take up, you can make it greener by using environmentally-friendly equipment and buying products made from recycled materials. But the final goal should be “green gyms”. They are better replacements for traditional health clubs and modern sports centers. Members of green gyms play sports outdoors, in the countryside or open spaces. There is no special requirement for you to start your membership. And best of all, it’s free.
8. What do we know about golf from the passage?
A. It is popular in Portugal and Spain.
B. It needs water and electricity to keep its courses green.
C. It pollutes the earth with chemicals and wastes.
D. It causes water shortages around the world.
9. The author uses power walking as an example mainly because _____.
A. it uses fewer resources. B. it improves our health.
C. it is an outdoor sport. D. it is recommended by experts.
10. Which of the following is the author most probably in favor of?
A. Playing golf. B. Motor racing in the desert.
C. Cycling around a lake. D. Swimming in a sports center.
11 The author writes the passage to________.
A. show us the function of major sports.
B. introduce different types of environmentally-friendly sports.
C. discuss the major influence of popular sports.
D. encourage us to go in for green sports.
D
The most important skill I picked up at school was keeping a routine. Routines allow us to develop a rhythm to our lives, but they also have their downsides.
It can be easy to get so accustomed to your routine that you don’t realize you’re no longer conscious of your time. This can stop progress, which means you start living your life on autopilot. It’s important that you include time in your routine for self-reflection. Doing the same thing week after week can be dull. If you make time to try new things and explore new interests, you can adjust your routine to better fit your lifestyle as things change.
When I first came to college, I was told countless times that it’s important you develop a routine so you can focus on things important to you. But it’s easy to forget the bigger picture. I got so used to the same old things that I would often forget about all of the other fun and exciting opportunities college had to offer.
It wasn’t until my junior year that I really started setting time aside to explore things that were interesting to me. This was partly because COVID-19 and lockdown made my college life a lot more boring. It was this experience that made me realize I was stuck in a rut, a feeling I’m sure many came to terms with. I decided I was going to make a change. I needed to find a balance between keeping a structured schedule and finding time to be creative and try new things.
I started writing and doing research to apply the things I learned in class. I started learning new instruments, visiting new places around town and exploring new ways to get involved in the local community. All of these different experiences allowed me to look at the things I was doing from a new perspective. It made me reassess what I’m doing with my life and pursue new goals, which have added tremendous value to my life.
Routines are important, yes, but don’t forget: it’s not the routine that determines your life. It’s only you who can decide how you spend your time, so don’t forget to throw something new in there from time to time. Above all else, don’t live your life on autopilot.
12. What can happen if we “live our lives on autopilot” according to the author?
A. We make rapid progress.
B. We get bored by our dull lives.
C. We forget to practice self-reflection.
D. We become more sensitive to changes.
13. What did the author realize in his junior year of college?
A. It was vital to develop a routine.
B. A structured schedule helped beat boredom.
C. He should focus on important things.
D. He should lead a more balanced life.
14. In what way did the author make a change?
A. He changed his career path.
B. He changed his major in college.
C. He paid more attention to his books.
D. He enriched his social life.
15. What is the message the author tries to convey in the text?
A. We should balance our school work and interests.
B. It’s important to explore possibilities outside our routines.
C Our routines define our goals and who we are.
D. Colleges offer us numerous opportunities to try new things.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
In Stressful Times, Make Stress Work for You
These are stressful times. Fortunately, we can actually use that stress to improve our health and well-being. Over a decade of research suggests that it’s not the type or amount of stress that determines its impact. ____16____
Step 1: Acknowledge Your Stress
Labeling your stress consciously and deliberately moves neural activity from the amygdala — the center of emotion and fear — to the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for executive control and planning. In other words, when we take a moment to acknowledge our stress, it moves us from operating from a fearful, reactive place to a position where we can be thoughtful and deliberate. ____17____
Step 2: Own Your Stress
The next step is to welcome, or “own” your stress. We only stress about things that we care about. ____18____ Try completing this sentence about whatever was specifically stressing you out in step one: “I’m stressed about…because I deeply care about…”
Step 3: Use Your Stress
Connecting to the core values behind your stress sets you up for the third and most essential step: using or leveraging stress to achieve your goals and connect more deeply with the things that matter most.
Ask yourself: Are your typical responses in alignment with the values behind your stress? ____19____
There’s so much happening right now that we can’t control. ____20____ Some psychologists argue that true transformative change can occur only during stress or crises. The trick is to channel your coronavirus stress as energy to make the most of this time.
A. Think about how you might change your response to this stress to better facilitate your goals and your purpose.
B. You can release stress from the past and more with emotional focus techniques.
C. By owning our stress, we connect to the positive motivation or personal value behind our stress.
D. But — as many people are noticing — there are also unprecedented opportunities amid the fear.
E. Instead, it’s our mind-set about stress that matters most.
F. But later, we will be able to ask ourselves how we each responded to this crisis.
G. This step is also an opportunity to understand what’s at the heart of your personal stress or anxiety.

Carl moved to Arizona in December. He came from the round, green mountains of Vermont to the Sonoran Desert where the mountains were sharp, brown, and wrinkled. Carl was homesick.
Carl’s new home was the town of Silverbell. Silverbell sat near a river with the same name. But there was not a drop of water in this river.
Carl hadn’t made any real friends yet. He always walked home from school alone. One day, though, he heard a lonely melody (旋律) floating in the wind. It sounded wonderful-and fitted Carl’s mood just right. He followed the music to the schoolyard and found Tadio, the kid who always sat by himself in the lunchroom. He sat on the steps playing a wooden flute (长笛).
“That song is wonderful!” Carl said.
“Thank you,” Tadio said with a bright, sunny smile.
“I’m Carl. I play, too.” He took out bis own silver flute.
“Ah, my name is Tadio. Let’s play together.”
Carl joined Tadio. They played Ode to Joy, a piece that they both knew by heart. The two got along so well that Carl felt comfortable telling Tadio about his homesickness.
“It just doesn’t feel like winter around here,” Carl said. “I don’t think it ever will. It’s too hot.”
Tadio said, “It feels like winter to me, but I’ve lived in Silverbell my whole life.”
“So, why is it called Silverbell anyway?” asked Carl.
“Because of the canyon (峡谷). My grandfather said at special times, one could hear her ring like a silver bell…for example when the rain poured down,” Tadio said.
Then Carl complained about Principal Ramire’s request for his flute solo at tomorrow’s winter concert.
“Ah, you are shy, but you play very well. Let’s meet tomorrow before the concert to practice. Maybe that will help ease your fear. I know a spot beside the canyon where I often go to play. Sometimes, her echo (回音) sounds like she’s singing with me,” Tadio laughed.
The next day was sunny and warm. After school, the two boys spread out a blanket beside Silverbell Canyon and played, stopping only when they heard the sound of distant thunder. The rain followed.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

Usually, gossip spreads information about a topic— breakups, trouble at home, even dropping out — at a person would rather keep secret.

11. The author writes the passage to________.
A. show us the function of major sports.
B. introduce different types of environmentally-friendly sports.
C. discuss the major influence of popular sports.
D. encourage us to go in for green sports.

C. Our routines define our goals and who we are.
D. Colleges offer us numerous opportunities to try new things.
【答案】12. C 13. D 14. D 15. B

【答案】16. E 17. G 18. C 19. A 20. D

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡相应位置作答。
As the rain poured down, Carl started to understand what Tadio said earlier.

【答案】 As the rain poured down, Carl started to understand what Tadio said earlier. The sound of rain landed on the ground and the echo really sounded as if the canyon was singing with him. She was ringing like a silver bell, which made Carl lost in the song of the echo. Spreading before his eyes was the beautiful scene of the canyon and ringing around his ears was the silver bell. He felt as if he were floating in the canyon, in the air and even back to his hometown, seeing his family waving to him. “Carl, it’s time to go to the concert.” Tadio said.
He woke up from the amazing scene and joined the other students for the concert. In the splendid hall were crowds of teachers, students and even parents. Carl felt a little anxious. “Don’t worry, Carl. You can imagine you are in the canyon.” Hearing what Tadio said, Carl began to wandering himself in the center of the beautiful songs echoed in the canyon, feeling much better and relaxed. The concert turned out to be a great success and Carl began to love the place.
