Passage 2[2024 西安铁一中三模]
Its important to teach your children good manners. Teaching good
manners should begin long before they know how to walk or talk. In
life, you have to set a good example for them.
But how do we teach them good manners? There is a good book,
70
How to Behave and Why. It is written by Munro Leaf. I read it with my
first grade students and we love the book. It tells good manners that
every child should know. The words in the book are not difficult. There
are also pictures in it. They make the book easy to understand.
Also, you can teach your children in life. Before they go to school
or a friends house, tell them the importance of good manners. In your
family, you can make a list of family manners. This helps children learn
good manners anytime. And you can also have a manners competition.
It makes learning manners more interesting.
What are good manners for children? At school, they should
respect teachers and other classmates. They shouldnt be noisy in class.
And they should say “hello” or “goodbye” to teachers and classmates,
and “thank you” when they get help from others. When children are at
the table, good table manners are important, too. For example, teach
your children not to talk with their mouths full. Tell them that old
people should eat first. Teach your children not to be late for classes,
parties, meetings and so on.
In fact, good manners are very helpful in childrens self-growth. So
teach them to your children and learn with your children.

desert oasis
Shi Guangyin was born in Dingbian County,
Shaanxi Province in 1952. He is a hero of the
sand control.

killed by the strong sand. In order to avoid the sand, his family moved

Passage 1 中国的书法艺术 [2024 龙东地区改编]
Chinese calligraphy is an important part of traditional Chinese
culture. Calligraphy started in China and spread to other parts of Asia
with Chinese culture. It has a history of 4,000 to 5,000 years.
Calligraphy is the art of writing Chinese characters (汉字) and rules of
writing with a brush. When you practice calligraphy, it is important to
pay attention to the changes of the strokes (笔画) and the spaces
between characters.
There are many famous calligraphers in history, such as Wang
Xizhi and Yan Zhenqing. Different calligraphy works can show different
calligraphers feelings and personalities. Today, they can be seen on the
walls of offices, shops, hotels and many other places.
“If I live in China, I will become a calligrapher rather than a
painter for sure,” the world-famous master of art, Picasso said. He fell
in love with Chinese calligraphy as soon as he saw Zhang Daqians
works.
The tool for practicing calligraphy is calligraphy brushes. They are
usually made from the hair of different animals. Practicing calligraphy
takes a lot of time and many people take lessons to learn it. During the
lessons, they can learn how to write different strokes of Chinese
characters. If youre interested in it, you may start practicing with a
teacher right away.

Passage 2 越剧《新龙门客栈》[2024 榆林绥德县三模]
New Dragon Gate Inn, a new Yueju Opera production, has become
a hit among young people since its first performance in March, 2023.
According to reports, tickets for the performances of the opera in
December sold out within two minutes. On second-hand platforms(平
台), the price of tickets even rose to 6,666 yuan from the original price
of 399 yuan.
The opera is performed by Xiaobaihua, a Yueju Opera troupe (剧
团) from Zhejiang Province. It draws inspiration from the film New
Dragon Gate Inn in 1992. Why is the opera so popular? One reason is
the fascinating experience it offers. The audience(观众) sit very close
to the performers. They can communicate with the performers and even

take part in scenes as the story goes on. For example, they may be
asked to send a letter during the performance.
“The stage seems to disappear. Everyone is part of the performance,”
said Chen Lijun, who plays an important role in the opera.
Another reason is the use of short video platforms, which are
popular among young people. With their help, more young people get
interested in the opera.
And more importantly, the members of the troupe pay attention to
every detail to make the opera successful. Take Chen for example. She
has spent a lot of time improving her skills. Sometimes she may practice
until midnight. Thanks to their efforts, the beauty of traditional culture
shines through.

computers for people to use. You can even think of educational lectures
(讲座) and concerts that are often held in a library. But few people
would expect to have a farm in a library.
But why not? After all, with rising costs, food safety is a
community-wide issue(问题). The Cicero Public Library near Syracuse
in New York solved this problem by building a farm on its land. When
Meg Backus saw all the open space in the library across the street from
the building, he realized it could be used to benefit the community.
The farm was created in 2011 and in the beginning, 40 members of
the library brought seeds, water, and supplies (供应品) to see if they
could grow food on the land. It turned out that they could. To get the
needed supplies for a larger farm, the library began to work with the
organization Syracuse Grows Agency.
The community farm donates over 200 pounds of fresh produce to
local food banks every year. Half of the growing area is used as the Food
Educational Garden. The other half is used by growers themselves.
During the year, there are educational programs held at the library to
teach people how to garden. There are also a lot of gardening books that

Over the past few years, technology has played a very important
role in culture protection in China. One of the beneficiaries∗ of this
trend is the Xian City Wall, Chinas largest and best-preserved (保存
最完好的) ancient city wall.
Located at the heart of Xian, capital of Shaanxi Province, the city
wall was built as a military defense (军事防御) system over 600 years
ago. The wall is up to 14 meters wide at the top.
Bearing witness to history, the city wall is also the part of modern
city life. A lot of tourists go on top of it, while a large number of cars
and buses pass through the city gates daily.
However, the city wall has experienced some damage over the

a typhoon
A typhoon is a very big and powerful storm.
It forms in the Northwest Pacific Ocean. It has
strong winds that blow in a circle around a center
called the eye. It also has a lot of rain and
sometimes thunder and lightning.
Typhoons form over the warm ocean water of the tropics (热带).
When warm wet air over the water rises, cooler air takes the place of it.
The cooler air will then get warm and start to rise. This cycle causes
huge storm clouds to form. These storm clouds will begin to move
around a central point with the spin (旋转) of the earth. If there is
enough warm water, the cycle will continue and the storm clouds and
wind speeds will grow causing a typhoon to form.
Typhoons can be very dangerous because they can do great harm to
the land and the people who live near the coastline. They can make big
waves that cover the coastline with water. They can knock down trees,
houses and other buildings with their strong winds. They can also cause
