Thank you for your sharing and I am so proud of you. I
also have many wonderful moments during junior high.
Last month, I won the schools English speech contest.
I think it was my proudest moment of my junior high. To
prepare for the contest, I chose a topic I was interested in:
the importance of learning English. I spent hours organizing
my ideas. I also practiced my pronunciation to make sure I
could speak clearly and confidently. On the big day, I felt
nervous. When it was my turn to speak, I took a deep
breath and began. As I spoke, I noticed the audience
nodding and smiling, which encouraged me to keep going.
Finally, my hard work paid off and I felt excited when I got
first prize.
Yours,
Wang Jiayu

Since the astronauts stay in space for a longer and longer time,
carrying all food to space becomes more and more difficult. So, “space
planting” becomes very important. Chinese astronauts have successfully
grown wheat, rice, lettuce, cherry tomato and so on. These “ space
gardens” not only provide astronauts with food but also more oxygen and
water.
A new study by Chinese scientists has found that bacteria (细菌)
in soil from Earth could affect plants growing on the moon. Researchers
from China Agricultural University found out three kinds of bacteria from
Earth that were good for plant growth.
They then grew model plants in the lunar soil with the bacteria.
They found that the plants had longer stems (茎) and roots after six
days of growth compared with those grown without the bacteria. The
plants also had heavier and wider leaves after 24 days of growth.
Besides, levels of chlorophyll (叶绿素) in the model plants were about
double that of those grown without bacteria.
“The study results have an important influence for future long-term
stays on the moon,” the studys lead researcher, Sun Zhencai said. In
their following research, they hope to grow crops like rice, corn and
potatoes with real lunar soil samples. As for as Im concerned, earth
bacteria may help astronauts make better use of lunar resources, such as
creating lunar greenhouses.

I am a plastic bottle. A week ago, I was on a supermarket shelf. I
had a normal life, the same as all my brothers and sisters, other bottles
full of water. I felt really happy.
Then a tall woman picked me up and put me in her basket! The

made friends with the cans and bottles in it. However, only a few hours
later, she took me out of the fridge and drank the water inside me. Then
she threw me into a dustbin. I had never felt that empty and alone in my
life.
Early the next morning, a man took me out of the dustbin. He
threw me and the other rubbish into the back of a truck. There were so
many bad smells. Then I was pushed together with the rest of the
rubbish. Soon I was completely flat(扁平的). I could not believe how

Watch a TV show with the sound turned off. Are you able to tell
what the actors and actresses are saying or how they are feeling? Most of
us have tried something like this sometimes in our life. And weve
probably been able to figure out whats going on. This skill of “reading”
that people without using words is called nonverbal communication (非
言语交流). Here are some of them.
As a matter of fact, using facial expressions is a common way of
communication. In other words, people from all kinds of backgrounds
are able to know your feelings quite well through your facial
expressions. However, is it true for body language?
Take gestures (手势) as an example. Some of the same gestures
have very different meanings in different cultures. For example, the
“OK” gesture means “good” in most cultures. If you show this sign to a
man in Turkey, however, he will think you are treating him rudely. You
may get yourself in trouble.
Another important part of body language is touch. In some
cultures, people pat their friends on the back as a way to praise them,
but in other cultures, this behavior can be impolite. Besides, shaking
hands is a common way of greeting in Western cultures. In India,
however, it is impolite to shake hands with the elderly. Instead, the
best way to greet them is to touch their feet.
Generally speaking, our body language depends a lot on our
culture. So the next time you decide to travel to another country, a
quick search online can guide you how to behave properly.
