Good morning, everyone. In today’s lesson, I’d like to talk about ways to save energy. We use energy every day. It is important not to waste the energy we have. How can we save energy? Do you stand in front of the fridge with the door open, trying to decide what you want for a snack? Doing this makes the air in the fridge warm up and then the fridge uses extra energy to make it cold again. We can save energy by opening and closing the door quickly. Another way to save energy is to turn off lights when they are not needed and use natural light during the day. Driving cars also uses a lot of energy. It’s a good idea to use public transportation, ride a bike, or walk instead of always using your car. Doing these things helps save energy and is better for the environment. Can you think of some other ways to save energy? I’ll give you a few minutes to discuss them in groups. And then we’ll watch a video. OK, let’s get started.

Betty Reid Soskin retired (退休) at the age of 100 as the oldest active National Park Service(NPS) ranger (护林员). She spent her last day on the job at the WWII Home Front National Historical Park in Richmond, California.
As an NPS employee, Soskin tirelessly promoted the stories of African American people and women of color who contributed to the home front effort during World War II. She briefly worked for the United States Air Force in 1942 but quit after learning that she’ d only been hired because her employers mistakenly believed that she was white.
After leaving the Air Force, Soskin worked as a file clerk at Boilermaker’s A-36, an all-Black union hall in the San Francisco Bay Area. A talented musician, she and her husband, Mel Reid, founded one of the first Black-owned music stores in the region in 1945. Soskin also spent decades working as a staff member for officials in Berkley City Council and the California State Assembly.
The newly retired ranger has been involved with the Richmond national park since its establishment in2000. In these early planning years, Soskin was often the only person of color in the meeting room.
At 84, Soskin first joined the NPS in a short-term role, working to share the understudied stories of Black Americans on the WWII home front. She was hired (雇用) as a permanent NPS employee in 2011.
“I felt such pride in the uniform,” Soskin said. “When I’m in a public place, I’m introducing silently to every child of color a career path that they might not ever be aware of, because they’ve never seen a person of color like me in a National Park uniform.”
“Giving shape to a new national park has been exciting and worthwhile,” she added. “It has proven to bring meaning to my final years.”
24. What can be inferred about Betty Reid Soskin from the text?
A. She retired as an NPS employee at 84.
B. She left the Air Force due to a racial misunderstanding.
C. She opened the first Black-owned music store in her region.
D. She was the only person of color in Richmond’s national park.
25. Which can replace the underlined word “permanent” in Paragraph 5?
A. Full-time. B. On-call.
C. Local. D. Seasonal.
26. What did Soskin think of her job as a ranger?
A. Well-paid. B. Inspiring.
C. Demanding. D. Team-based.

Long daily commutes (通勤) can leave little time around busy work days for commuters, who will be less active in sports, overweight and sleep poorly as a result. Sitting in traffic can also raise your blood pressure, a study found — not due to annoyance, but due to the air pollution drivers breathe in.
Nowhere are those health effects felt more strongly, perhaps, than in South Korea, a country thought to have some of the longest average commuting times and highest rates of depression. A new study of more than23,000 people has found that South Koreans who commute longer than an hour are 16 percent more likely to experience depression than those with shorter commutes of under 30 minutes.
Dong-Wook Lee, who led the research team, was a public health researcher in Korea. Their team conducted a national survey in 2017. Survey subjects answered questions based on the five-point World Health Organization well-being index (指标), from which the researchers rated their emotional health. The average daily commute time was 47 minutes. That adds up to almost 4 hours of commuting per week if people work 5days. One-quarter of the 23,415 people reported experiencing depression, judged by their index scores — a far cry from a doctor’s judgment of any kind.
Although the study does not show cause and effect, the connection between hour-plus commutes and poorer emotional health among men was strongest for those who were unmarried, worked more than 52 hours per week and had no children. Among females, long commuting times were most strongly connected with depression among low-paid workers, shift workers (轮班工作者), and those with children.
Reducing travel time and distance through improved transportation may provide a better commuting environment for people and improve their health the researchers conclude.
28. What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A. The importance of reducing travel time. B. The health impacts of lengthy commutes.
C. The serious threat of air pollution in traffic. D. The great pressure of a heavy workload.
29. What can we learn from the research in South Korea?
A. South Koreans have good public health.
B. Commutes are related to workers’ performance.
C. Hour-long commutes increase depression risk.
D. Most South Koreans have a brief journey to work.
30. How did the researchers collect data for the study?
A. By asking questions. B. By making comparisons.
C. By referring to previous records. D. By conducting street interviews.
31. Who is more likely to suffer from depression on hour-plus commutes?
A. A single man with low pay. B. A married man with children.
C. A female shift worker with children. D. A female worker with a heavy workload.
B 29. C 30. A 31. C

根据第一段“Long daily commutes (通勤) can leave little time around busy work days for commuters, who will be less active in sports, overweight and sleep poorly as a result. Sitting in traffic can also raise your blood pressure, a study found — not due to annoyance, but due to the air pollution drivers breathe in.(每天长时间的通勤会让通勤者在繁忙的工作日中没有多少时间,因此他们会减少运动,体重超重,睡眠质量也很差。一项研究发现,交通堵塞也会使你的血压升高——不是因为烦恼,而是因为司机吸入的空气污染)”可知,第一段的主要内容是长时间通勤对健康的影响。故选B。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“A new study of more than23,000 people has found that South Koreans who commute longer than an hour are 16 percent more likely to experience depression than those with shorter commutes of under 30 minutes.(一项针对2.3万多人的新研究发现,通勤时间超过一小时的韩国人患抑郁症的可能性比通勤时间较短、不到30分钟的人高16%)”可知,长时间通勤增加了患抑郁症的风险,故选C。

The Benjamin Franklin effect is an idea in psychology (心理学) which suggests that if Alice does a favour (帮助) for Bob, then Alice will be more likely to do more things for Bob in the future. The usual explanation for this effect is that it works by changing the giver’s self-view. Once you do someone a favour, you naturally think of yourself as the person’s friend, and you’ll be more likely to do friendly things for them going forward.
While I’ve observed a real effect like this, it’s different from the usual story in small but important ways. Here’s what I think is actually going on: Requesting a favour from a stranger or someone you know little has two important parts. There’s a request for charity, and a friendly attitude to partnership. People often want to provide limited charity out of kindness, responsibility or some such, but are willing to put a lot of effort into working well with their partners. As the Franklin effect depends on the friendly attitude to partnership, the charity part contributes to the early steps of the process but is not important in turning one-off favours into continuing relationships.
When you request a favour, many people will see if you are a good partner subconsciously (潜意识地) and everyone will notice whether you act like a good one later. This includes showing proper appreciation, as well as doing favours in return.
I sometimes see my friends try to use the self-view model of the Franklin effect to get support from influential customers. They’ll try to get a favour, not because the favour is useful in itself, but because it represents a step forward in the continuing project of catching their attention. But it doesn’t often turn into anything lasting in the way my friend wants. Because they don’t have the basic things that would allow them to become a good friend or partner, my friend can only ask for charity, which by itself is not a necessity for a continuing relationship. All this is to say that the Franklin effect doesn’t cheat people into helping you. Rather, it’s a test that gives you a chance to show your worth.
32. What is the main idea behind the Benjamin Franklin effect?
A. Generosity builds up social trust.
B. Charity leads to lasting friendships.
C. Giving raises receivers’ self-respect.
D. Doing favours promote relationships.
33. What role does the act of charity play in building lasting relationships?
A. It develops trust. B. It ensures partnership.
C. It starts connections. D. It strengthens responsibility.
34. What do people typically do when asked to do a favour?
A. Test the requesters’ skills.
B. Express subconscious thoughts.
C. Appreciate others’ favours in return.
D. Consider the potential for partnerships.
35. What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A. It’s easy to be fooled by the Franklin effect.
B. Personal value is key to long-term partnerships.
C. The Franklin effect may increase one’s influence.
D. The self-view model may turn into lasting attention.
D 33. C 34. D 35. B

根据第一段“The Benjamin Franklin effect is an idea in psychology (心理学) which suggests that if Alice does a favour (帮助) for Bob, then Alice will be more likely to do more things for Bob in the future. The usual explanation for this effect is that it works by changing the giver’s self-view. 33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“As the Franklin effect depends on the friendly attitude to partnership, the charity part contributes to the early steps of the process but is not important in turning one-off favours into continuing relationships.(由于富兰克林效应依赖于对合作关系的友好态度,慈善部分有助于这个过程的早期阶段,但在将一次性的帮助转化为持续的关系方面并不重要)”可知,慈善行为在建立持久关系中起到开启联系的作用。
根据第三段“When you request a favour, many people will see if you are a good partner subconsciously (潜意识地) and everyone will notice whether you act like a good one later.(当你请求帮助时,许多人会潜意识地观察你是否是一个好的合作伙伴,之后每个人都会留意你的表现是否像一个好的合作伙伴)”可知,当人们被要求帮忙时,他们通常会考虑合作的可能性。
根据最后一段“They’ll try to get a favour, not because the favour is useful in itself, but because it represents a step forward in the continuing project of catching their attention. Rather, it’s a test that gives you a chance to show your worth.(他们会试着得到别人的帮助,不是因为这个帮助本身是有用的,而是因为这代表着在吸引他们注意力的持续项目中向前迈进了一步。但它通常不会像我朋友想要的那样变成持久的东西。因为他们不具备成为好朋友或好搭档的基本条件,我的朋友只能要求施舍,这本身并不是维持一段持续关系的必要条件。所有这些都表明,富兰克林效应并不是欺骗人们来帮助你。相反,它是一个给你展示自身价值的机会的测试)”可推知,个人价值是建立长期合作关系的关键。故选B。

Listen more. Are you actually listening? Is your body posture(姿态) open and welcoming or closed off? ____36____ Being a good listener not only ensures that you have a better understanding of what is being said, but it also helps you avoid assumptions by paying attention to what is really happening rather than your own story about it. ____37____
Think before you speak. Take a moment to really think about what you’ re trying to say before you say it. ____38____ Getting in the habit of checking in with why you are speaking can help keep your communication clear and effective.
Allow silence. A lot is communicated in the silence between words-good communication allows for this silence rather than trying to cover it up with words. ____39____ Don’t be afraid of the silence, and use your natural awareness to feel the moment and only speak when you have a clear reason to.
Lead with compassion (同情). Compassion leads to a stronger eagerness for harmony, which can help prevent anger and stop us from saying things we might not truly mean. ____40____
A. Are you actually trying to make a certain impression?
B. Asking questions can reflect what you’ve heard and show interest.
C. Are you fully focused or is something else drawing your attention?

Are you actually listening? Is your body posture(姿态) open and welcoming or closed off?(多听。你真的在听吗?你的身体姿势是开放和欢迎的还是封闭的?)”可知,本句与上文的问句并列,针对专注倾听进行设问。故C选项“你是否完全集中了注意力,还是有其他事情吸引了你的注意力?”符合语境,故选C。
【37题详解】
根据上文“Being a good listener not only ensures that you have a better understanding of what is being said, but it also helps you avoid assumptions by paying attention to what is really happening rather than your own story about it.(做一个好的倾听者不仅可以确保你更好地理解所说的内容,还可以帮助你通过关注真实发生的事情而不是你自己的故事来避免假设)”可知,前文提到倾听的两个好处,本句进一步补充倾听的好处,与上文形成递进关系。
根据上文“Think before you speak. Take a moment to really think about what you’ re trying to say before you say it.(三思而后言。在你开口之前,花点时间好好想想你要说什么)”可知,本段主题是“三思而后言”,本句需要紧扣检查说话动机的核心,与后文“Getting in the habit of checking in with why you are speaking can help keep your communication clear and effective.(养成检查你说话原因的习惯可以帮助你保持清晰有效的沟通)”检查为什么要说话呼应。
A lot is communicated in the silence between words-good communication allows for this silence rather than trying to cover it up with words.(允许沉默。语言之间的沉默传达了很多信息——良好的沟通允许这种沉默,而不是试图用语言来掩盖它)”可知,本段主题是“沉默的力量”,本句需要贴合沉默传递非语言信号的语境,D选项中“unspoken messages”与“silence一致。故D选项“优秀的沟通者能捕捉到未说出来的信息并做出反应”符合语境,故选D。
【40题详解】
根据上文“Lead with compassion (同情). Compassion leads to a stronger eagerness for harmony, which can help prevent anger and stop us from saying things we might not truly mean.(用同情心来领导。同情会导致对和谐的更强烈渴望,这有助于防止愤怒,阻止我们说一些可能不是真正想说的话)”可知,本段主题是“以同情心引导”,本句是同情心的具体表现,直接点明理解他人意图的方法。故G选项“设身处地为别人着想,我们就能更好地理解他们想要传达的信息”符合语境,故选G。

It was the end of the first semester of senior high school. The final exams had been really tough. Everyone had studied hard day and night. Now that they were finally over, everyone felt so relieved. They were all looking forward to the winter vacation. People were thinking about lazy mornings, staying in bed late, and having lots of fun. Jane and Alice were two very good friends. They were always together. For weeks, they had been planning to go to the movies on the first day of the vacation. They picked a movie that they both really wanted to see.
On the morning of that special day Jane woke up early. She was super excited. She put on her favorite skirt. Then she sat in the living room, waiting for Alice. Time passed very slowly. Every minute felt like an hour. Alice didn’t show up. Jane called Alice many times, but no one answered. After an hour, Jane started to get worried. She also got a little angry. She thought Alice had forgotten about their plan.
Two hours later, Jane decided to go to Alice’s house. When she got there, Alice’s mom opened the door. She looked sad. She told Jane that Alice had suddenly fallen ill that morning. She had a high fever and was feeling very bad. Jane’s anger went away right away. She just wanted to see her friend.
When Jane went into Alice’s room, she saw Alice lying in bed, looking very pale. Alice opened her eyes slowly and said weakly, “Jane, I’m so sorry. I really wanted to go to the movies with you. I set my alarm last night, but this stupid fever messed everything up.”

Jane walked up to Alice’s bed and sat down beside her. At first, a touch of disappointment still lingered in Jane’s heart because she had been looking forward to their movie date for so long. However, after seeing Alice’s sickly state, her disappointment quickly melted away, replaced by deep concern. “Don’t worry, Alice,” Jane comforted. “Your health is the priority. We can watch the movie later.” She dipped a cloth in cool water, gently squeezed it, and placed it on Alice’s forehead to reduce the fever. Alice’s mom, watching with gratitude, thanked Jane sincerely for her kindness and care. Jane smiled back, saying, “Auntie, that’s what friends are supposed to do.” With time ticking away, Alice made slow but steady progress towards better health.
When Alice fully recovered, they decided to have a celebration at Jane’s house. When Alice arrived, she was greeted with a huge smile and a tight hug from Jane. Eager to create a memorable celebration, they both got busy in the kitchen. They put on aprons and started making their favorite pizza together. As evening fell, they settled themselves on the couch, with food in front, ready to watch the long-awaited movie. The moment the movie started, their excitement was evident in every gesture. During the funny scenes, their laughter echoed through the room. For these two girls, this celebration wasn’t just about Alice’s recovery but also a testament to their unbreakable friendship that had only grown stronger through this experience.

At 84 Soskin first joined the NPS in a short-term role, working to share the understudied stories of Black Americans on the WWII home front.
A. Well-paid. B. Inspiring.
C. Demanding. D. Team-based.
27. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To describe Betty’s job changes in her life.
B. To show Betty’s pride as an African American.
C. To introduce Betty’s contributions as an NPS ranger.
D. To present Betty’s struggle for her identity of colored race.

Reducing travel time and distance through improved transportation may provide a better commuting environment for people and improve their health, the researchers conclude.
D
A It’s easy to be fooled by the Franklin effect.
B. Personal value is key to long-term partnerships.
C. The Franklin effect may increase one’s influence.
D. The self-view model may turn into lasting attention.

On the morning of that special day, Jane woke up early.
