My family has a history of diabetes (糖尿病), and I was, too, at risk of suffering from these diseases. When my doctor told me I had to do something about my weight because I was in danger of falling ill, I knew I had to take action.
I did not want to become like my relatives who had to constantly worry about their health and suffer the consequences of ill health. In fact, I wanted to be healthy and I wanted to stay healthy. Consequently, I began this journey of losing weight and becoming fit.
It took me years to get my weight back within healthy limits, and I faced many challenges along the way. Right now, I am not saying that the journey is over since it is not. But what I can say is that, along the way, I managed to create some really good, healthy habits for myself that allow me to keep myself in good shape.
I cannot describe to you the great feeling of finally being in control of my own body. For years, I thought it was impossible to lose weight and that I was doomed (注定的) to share my family’s medical problems. When the doctor told me I should lose weight, I was not very positive about getting results. However, once they started to appear, my attitude changed.
What I noticed, while I was on this road of losing weight, was that the little changes I could make counted the most. It was not a crazy strict diet or exercising for hours that helped me lose weight and keep it that way. The little habits, the small things - they were the ones that offered me the best way to lose the extra pounds I was carrying around. These are the tips that I followed: always warm up before exercising, drink enough water and always eat breakfast. That is how I managed to lose the weight I wanted. I followed the three simple tips above, which also.-gave me some good habits!
4. How did the author react after hearing the doctor’s advice?
A. She took it seriously. B. She turned a deaf ear to it.
C. She was a bit doubtful about it. D. She became worried about her disease.
5. Which of the following can best describe the author’s weight-changing journey?
A. Costly and traditional. B. Easy and rclaxing.
C. Risky and hurtful. D. Difficult and long.
6. What did the author mean by saying “my attitude changed” in paragraph 4?
A. She began to believe in her doctor.
B. She realized she should really lose weight.
C. She thought she would have medical problems.
D. She became hopeful about getting down to a healthy weight.
7. What did the author do to achieve her goal?
A. She started small. B. She pushed her body to the limit.
C. She adopted a very strict diet. D. She exercised hard for hours daily.
【答案】4. A 5. D 6. D 7. A
【解析】
【导语】本文是夹叙夹议文。作者有糖尿病家族史,为了远离这些家族疾病,作者决定听取医生的建议——通过减肥来保持健康。
【详解】1.细节理解题。根据第一段中“When my doctor told me I had to do something about my weight because I was in danger of falling ill, I knew I had to take action.(当我的医生告诉我,因为我有生病的危险,我必须对我的体重做些什么时,我知道我必须采取行动。)”可知,在听取了医生的建议后,作者决定采取行动,这说明作者开始认真对待这件事,故选A。
2.推理判断题。根据第三段中“It took me years to get my weight back within healthy limits, and I faced many challenges along the way.(我花了几年时间才把体重恢复到健康的范围内,在这个过程中我面临着许多挑战。)”可推知,作者的减肥之旅漫长而艰辛,故选D。
3.推理判断题。根据第四段中“When the doctor told me I should lose weight, I was not very positive about getting results. However, once they started to appear, my attitude changed.(当医生告诉我应该减肥时,我并不是很乐观。然而,一旦它们开始出现,我的态度就改变了)”可知,开始作者并不认为自己能够减肥成功,但是在看到自己的体重确实在下降时,她的态度开始转变,由此可推知,此时她看到了希望,认为自己有能力让体重达到健康标准,故选D。
4.细节理解题。根据最后一段中“What I noticed, while I was on this road of losing weight, was that the little changes I could make counted the most.(当我在减肥的道路上时,我注意到的是,我能做出的微小改变是最有价值的。)”和“The little habits, the small things - they were the ones that offered me the best way to lose the extra pounds I was carrying around. A handshake seems to be a normal gesture. In fact, in the 9th century BC, an ancient site during the ruling of Shalmaneser III clearly shows two figures holding hands. The Iliad, usually dated to the 8th century BC, mentions that two characters “taking each other’s hands and expressing their loyalty.” Centuries later, Shakespeare once wrote of two characters who shook hands and swore to be brothers in the book As You Like It. Shaking hands seems to be an ancient custom whose roots have disappeared in the sands of time.
Historians who have studied ancient etiquette (礼仪) books note that the modern handshake did not appear until the middle of the 19th century, when it was considered a slightly inappropriate gesture that could only be used between friends. But what if Shakespeare had written about handshaking hundreds of years earlier?
According to author Torbjdm Lundmark in his Tales of Hi and Bye: Greeting and Parting Rituals Around the World. the problem comes in differing definitions of the handshake. The early handshakes mentioned above were part of making deals or peace; King Shalmaneser III referred to a rebellion in which he signed a treaty with the King of Babylon. In the Iliad, Diomedes and Glaucus shook hands when they realized they were guest-friends, and Diomedes declared: 66Lefs not try to kill each other. Shakespeare was similarly referencing settlement of a conflict.
The modern handshake as a form of greeting is harder to trace. As a Dutch sociologist Herman Roodenburg — the chief authority for the history of handshaking ——wrote in a chapter of an anthology called A Cultural History of Gesture, “More than in any other field, that of the study of gesture is one in which the historian has to make the most of only a few clues”.
One of the earliest clues he cites is a 16th-century German translation of the French writer Rabelais’s Gargantua and Pantagruel. When one character meets Gargantua, Rabelais writes, ”He was greeted by countless hugs and countless good days.” But according to Roodenburg, the 16th-century German translation added references to shaking hands.
A popular saying suggests that Cleland’s statements against bowing were actually a wish to go back to a potentially traditional method of greeting in Europe. As the centuries progressed, handshaking was replaced by more hierarchical (等级的)ways of greeting - like bowing. According to Roodenburg, handshaking survived in a few remote places, like in Dutch towns where some would use the gesture to make peace after disagreements. Around the same time, those who valued equality also made use of handshaking. Then, as the Continent’s hierarchy was weakened, handshaking became a common practice among people of the same rank, as it is today.
8. Why does the author mention Shakespeare in the first two paragraphs?
A. To prove that the history of handshaking is hard to find.
B. To illustrate that handshaking is a very old custom.
C. To show readers that handshaking is common in fiction.
D. To explain the value of handshaking in communication.
9. What can we learn about handshaking from the passage?
A. The origin of handshaking as a form of greeting is easy to trace.
B Citizens usually shake hands to show friendliness in Holland.
C. It was used only between friends and to reach an agreement.
D. It is a common practice between people of different social positions.
10. Which of the following is similar in meaning to “anthology” in Para. 4?
A. the science of mental ability
B. a collection of selected literary passages
C. a daily written record of experiences
D. all the living things of a particular region
11. What can be inferred from the last paragraph of the passage?
A. The handshake has disappeared in some remote parts of the Netherlands.
B. Handshaking has different meanings in different European countries.
C. Handshakes are now common between people of different positions.
D. Most Europeans prefer to shake hands owing to the weakening effect of rank.
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. B 11. D
根据第一段中“Centuries later, Shakespeare once wrote of two characters who shook hands and swore to be brothers in the book As You Like It. Shaking hands seems to be an ancient custom whose roots have disappeared in the sands of time.(几个世纪后,莎士比亚曾在《皆大欢喜》中描写两个人物握手并发誓要成为兄弟。握手似乎是一种古老的习俗,其根源已消失在时间的长河中。)”以及第二段中“But what if Shakespeare had written about handshaking hundreds of years earlier?(但是,如果莎士比亚早在几百年前就写过握手呢?)”
根据第二段中“Historians who have studied ancient etiquette (礼仪) books note that the modem handshake did not appear until the middle of the 19th century, when it was considered a slightly inappropriate gesture that could only be used between friends.(研究古代礼仪书籍的历史学家指出,现代握手直到19世纪中叶才出现,当时它被认为是一种稍微不合适的手势,只能在朋友之间使用。)”可知,对于握手这个习俗直到19世纪中叶才出现,当时它被认为是一种稍微不合适的手势,只能在朋友之间使用。同时根据第四段中“The early handshakes mentioned above were part of making deals or peace(上面提到的早期握手是达成协议或和平的一部分)”以及“Shakespeare was similarly referencing settlement of a conflict.(莎士比亚也同样提到了冲突的解决。)”可知,握手曾经只在朋友之间使用,并且用来达成协议。故选C。
【10题详解】
词义猜测题。根据划线词后面的内容“A Cultural History of Gesture(手势的文化史)”以及“More than in any other field, that of the study of gesture is one in which the historian has to make the most of only a few clues(在手势研究领域,历史学家只需要充分利用少数线索,这一点在其他任何领域都不常见)”可知,荷兰社会学家赫尔曼·卢登堡所撰写的著作即《手势的文化史》中的一个章节指出在手势研究领域,历史学家只需要充分利用少数线索,这一点在其他任何领域都不常见的事实。故划线词表示荷兰社会学家赫尔曼·卢登堡所撰写文章的精选的文学段落,其与B为同义词。故选B。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Around the same time, those who valued equality also made use of handshaking. Then, as the Continent’s hierarchy was weakened, handshaking became a common practice among people of the same rank, as it is today.(大约在同一时期,那些重视平等的人也会使用握手。然后,随着欧洲大陆的等级制度被削弱,握手成为同一等级的人之间的一种普遍做法,就像今天一样。)”可知,大多数欧洲人更喜欢握手,因为等级的影响越来越弱。故选D。
D
Recently, online high schools in America have caused a debate about whether or not taxpayers’ money should be used to support online education. Online schools receive the same amount of funding as all other public schools, even though they don’t have to pay for rent or school equipment. States should use their educational funds to improve education at real schools, not to support online programs.
Some students only use online classes to supplement(补充)their school work. They benefit from the social experience of a traditional high school, while still taking online courses.
However, about 90 thousand students in America receive their education only from online schools. 50 thousand of these students take courses at Florida Virtual School, the largest online school in the country. While this method of schooling helps students who live in remote regions, most school systems are upset that they are losing more students each year to these online programs.
Although online learning allows children to work at their own pace, these online schools have only one teacher per several hundred students. Often, teachers can’t give struggling students the help they need as they are unable to talk face-to-face with them, to find exactly what they’re having difficulty with.
Additionally, even though online schooling accommodates(顾及)students who live in more remote states, students in online programs may suffer in social situations because they will not learn valuable communication skills from their schooling. Similar to students who are home schooled, those who take only online classes won’t learn social etiquette(礼节), and will be treated differently by their peers.
Online schooling might be useful for places where there are not enough students for a real school such as agricultural regions, but states should only spend taxpayers’ money on online schools in extreme cases.
12. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Whether students should study at online schools.
B. Whether online schools should be allowed to exist.
C. Whether taxpayers should pay for online schools.
D. Whether traditional schools should be replaced.
13. According to the passage, online schooling _____.
A. is helpful to students living in remote regions
B. allows students to work together
C. makes it possible for students to get immediate help
D. develops students’ critical thinking
14. According to Paragraph 5, the author worries that students at online schools _____.
A. might lose interest in learning
B. would play online games
C. could not receive teachers’ help
D. could not become fully developed
15. What is the author’s attitude?
A. Taxpayers should not pay for online schools at all.
B. Taxpayers should pay more for online schools than real schools.
C. Taxpayers’ money should be spent on online schools conditionally.
D. Taxpayers should support online schools in different ways.
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. D 15. C
【解析】

【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“students in online programs may suffer in social situations because they will not learn valuable communication skills from their schooling.”(参加网络课程的学生可能会在社交场合遇到困难,因为他们无法从学校学到有价值的沟通技巧。)可知,作者担心他们不能得到全面发展,故选D。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后“……but states should only spend taxpayers’ money on online schools in extreme cases.”(作者认为只有在极端情况下,各州才能把纳税人的钱花在在线学校上)可知,纳税人的钱应该有条件地花在网上学校上。故选C。

Our planet is always changing and its systems are constantly working together to keep a kind of balance.____16____.
All living things are connected to each other in ecosystems by food chains and food webs.____17____. Herbivores (species that don’t eat meat) get energy by eating plants. Carnivores (species that eat meat) get energy by eating herbivores. This is how energy flows through all ecosystems — starting from the sun.
____18____, the survival of the entire system, along with every living thing that depends on it for survival, hangs in the balance. For example, if someone decides to spray a poisonous pesticide on plants to keep bugs from eating them, then lizards may accidentally take in that poison when they eat the plants and cats may be poisoned, too, when they catch and eat the lizards.____19____. Rats carry diseases that are even more dangerous for humans.
____20____.If the eruption is very big, it could do a lot of damage besides killing thousands of people. A volcanic eruption spreads huge amounts of ash and gases into the atmosphere and around the globe, which could cause temperatures worldwide to fall. And when temperatures change dramatically like this, it affects crop patterns and could lead to massive food shortages.
A. Plants get energy from the sun
B. Another example is when a volcano erupts
C. When any one part of an ecosystem chain breaks
D. If we don’t take measures to protect our environment
E. With no cats around, the rat population could explode

Every Chinese-language textbook starts out with the standard phrases for greeting people. But as an American, I always found myself unable to speak freely when it came to ____21____ guests at the door. Just a goodbye would not do, yet that was all I had ever ____22____ the books. So I would smile and nod, bowing like a Japanese and searching ____23____ for words that would smooth over the visitors’ leaving and make them feel they would be ____24____ to come again. The parting for the Chinese includes a lot of necessary habitual practice. Although as a ____25____ I’m not expected to observe or even know all the rules, I’ve had to learn the expressions of politeness and ____26____ at a leave-taking.
The Chinese feel they are ____27____ to see a guest off to the farthest possible point-down the flight of stairs to the street below or perhaps all the way to the nearest bus stop. I’ve sometimes waited half an hour or more for my husband to ____28____ from seeing a guest off, ____29____ he’s gone to the bus stop and waited for the next bus to arrive.

My hostess or host, or both, insist on seeing me down the stairs and well on my way, with my repeating the “Don’t trouble to see me off” at every landing. If I try to go fast to discourage them from following, they are simply out to the discomfort of having to run after me. Better to ____31____ the inevitable.
Besides, that’s going against Chinese ____32____, because haste (doing things quickly) is to be avoided. What do you say when you ___33___ someone? People often say “Go slowly” ____34____ “Farewell”. To the Chinese it means “Take care” or “Watch your ____35____ ”, or some such caution, but translated literally it means “Go slowly”.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Undoubtedly, Mother Nature is always attractive to kids. In our childhood, how often did we turn a deaf ear to our parents’ advice? Very often! Thus, we landed ourselves in a situation where we greatly regretted our act of not having listened to the advice of the wise.
Such an unforgettable experience I had at the age of 7 gave me an invaluable lesson, after which I deeply understood why my gentle mother was repeating the boring suggestions and I would try to take her suggestions seriously.
In my childhood, I was so crazy about nature that even playing among the colorful flowers in our garden could make my day. Our house was next to the woods which had always stirred up(激起) great curiosity in me in wanting to find out what was within. Every time I saw fascinating butterflies dancing from the woods, my curiosity grew.
But my mother didn’t like me wandering off on my own and always ensured that I was within her sight. Even if she allowed me to explore the surrounding area on my own, it was only to be somewhere near the house. Being as curious as the cat, I always desired to explore the woods. It seemed as if my mother had understood my desire, so she had warmed me on lots of occasions never to enter the woods alone.
“Mom, can I go out and play in the garden?” I asked.
“Sure,” she would reply each time. “Kate, you can play in the garden but you must promise me one thing—only when I’m with you can you go into the woods. There are no cases of animal attacks on humans, but it’s still dangerous for a little kid like you. It’s too easy to get lost in the woods.”
“Sure, you’ve said that many times!” I answered without patience at her repeated reminders.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
However, curiosity got the better of me one morning.

【答案】参考范文 1
However, curiosity got the better of me one morning. Ignoring my mother’s reminder, I slid into the forbidden world. How fascinating! Among various colorful flowers danced butterflies. With excitement, I chased after the graceful creatures, running deeper into the woods. Suddenly they flew over trees and disappeared. What’s worse, I got lost! I rushed around, crying for help, frightened and helpless, but in vain. I repeated the useless efforts until sunset. “If only I followed Mom’s reminder!” I curled up under a tree, in bitter regret and cried again.
“Kate?” Behind the trees covered by the rays of the setting sun came my mother’s voice. “Mom! I’m here!” Wild with joy, I rushed towards where the voice came from. Behind a tree appeared my mother. She dashed up, hugged me tight and checked whether I got hurt. “I’m so sorry! I should have appreciated your suggestion!” I burst into tears. Wiping tears from my muddy face, she repeated the reminders, which weren’t boring any more, but wise and affectionate, and were implanted in my life forever.
参考范文 2
However, curiosity got the better of me one morning. I summoned up my courage and decided to take a chance. Hardly had I entered the woods when I was totally attracted by the sight. The wandering clouds, the blooming flowers and the vigorous trees all kept me spellbound. At the sight of a beautiful butterfly, I tiptoed along the path, bent over, cupped my hands gently and danced with it down the track. Time flew and before I knew it, I was deep in the woods, unable to find the way out. With a feeling of horror totally holding me in its power, I squatted down under a tree, tears rolling down my cheeks.
“Kate?” Behind the trees covered by the rays of the setting sun came my mother’s voice. Hearing my mom’s voice, I yelled in a quivering tone, rushed towards her direction and threw my arms around her. Noticing my misty eyes, she patted me on the shoulders and checked whether I got hurt. Choked with emotion, I whispered, “I am OK, Mom. I will never go into the woods without your company and permission.” Shooting me an approving look, she added, “Next time you want to come, keep me informed!” In the setting sun, we headed back and this time, I held my mom’s hand tightly.

Online schooling might be useful for places where there are not enough students for a real school, such as agricultural regions, but states should only spend taxpayers’ money on online schools in extreme cases.

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
However, curiosity got the better of me one morning.
