He never expected anyone to care much about his craft. But McFarland, 59, now has more than 1 million followers on social media platform. He posts videos of his work as a cobbler — from replacing thin soles to fixing zippers, reviving (恢复) rubber heels to adding customized touches to timeworn pieces. McFarland breathes new life into seemingly unwearable shoes from his shop in Lakeland, Florida. Viewers are fascinated by McFarland’s careful cobbling. While he often uses a sanding machine, he does most of the work by hand and with basic tools. In one video, which has been viewed nearly 60 million times, McFarland revives and personalizes a pair of limited-edition boots, painting the soles a deep blue shade. The video shows every step of the painstaking process. According to McFarland, becoming a cobbler isn’t simple. “It takes three to five years to learn the trade,” said McFarland, who comes from a long line of cobblers. “This is my family heritage, my history. We’ve been at it for a long time.” As a teen, McFarland wasn’t keen on becoming a cobbler. When he was 20, though, his father got sick, and McFarland dropped out of college to help him run the family business. He ultimately took over. “I have no regrets. I really love being here.” McFarland said. McFarland is an advocate for buying high-quality shoes and mending them as needed, rather than purchasing inexpensive and trendy shoes that tend to not weather well. He said he frequently fixes shoes that are more than 40 years old. When he’s finished with them, “they’ll be good for probably another 30 to 50 years if you take care of them,” he said. McFarland’s mentality goes in line with the mending movement, which promotes repairing rather than replacing broken things. Unlike fast fashion, which has disastrous consequences for the environment, the mending movement seeks to reduce consumption and waste. “Good material can always be revived,” McFarland said. “It can last a lifetime.” 14. McFarland’s videos are so popular because he ______. A. designs and creates new styles of shoes B. tells interesting stories about mending shoes C. promotes old professions with modern machines D. shows the detailed process of repairing shoes by hand 15. McFarland’s career as a shoemaker began when ______. A. he graduated from college B. his family needed his help C. his video gained popularity D. he found his childhood interest 16. Which of the following words can best describe McFarland? A. Skillful and devoted. B. Open-minded and creative. C. Friendly and considerate. D. Hard-working and ambitious. 17. What can we learn from the passage? A. High quality makes fast fashion. B. Social media challenges tradition. C. Creativity holds the key to success. D. Mending contributes to eco-fashion. 14. LED bulbs are popping up everywhere now, on planes, car headlights, in your phone. And engineers are exploring more ways to use LEDs—everything from wireless data streaming to secure communication systems and in-flight networking. Engineer Harald Haas, co-founder of pureLiFi, explains how LEDs can be used to transmit information, “LEDs have the property that we can change the light that comes out of an LED very, very quickly. That change in the brightness is what we exploit in order to encode data extremely fast, so that a receiver will then see these changes in the light intensity in a way a human eye would not be able to detect. Then we have algorithms (算法) to recover these changes and get back the data stream.” There are many advantages to using LEDs to transmit information. For one thing, LEDs can communicate much faster than WiFi. What’s more, the visible light spectrum (频谱) is about ten thousand times larger than the radio spectrum. This would allow communication systems to not only use a spectrum that’s already been set up, but vast amount of free spectrum, which is in cars, in our LED lights at home, in streetlights and so on. “It’s ubiquitous. It’s already there,” Haas says. LiFi would also be more secure than WiFi. Because light can’t go through walls, people would not be able to log on to LiFi networks in the same way that they’re able to log on to and eavesdrop on (窃听) ongoing WiFi communications. Haas argues that LiFi would also be available in places where communication is typically difficult when we can’t use radio. One interesting application could be to use car headlights to communicate with other drivers on the road. “We can use these LEDs to transmit data from car to car. Normally you see the car in front of you, but if you were able to relay high-definition video from, say, three cars in front of you, you could see earlier what’s happening. This is a way we can enhance safety on our roads,” Haas says. Haas and his coworkers foresee the LED light industry changing rapidly in the near future to include additional features. “That is where LiFi plays a key role. From home sensing of interior, you’d find out if people have fallen down and the way you would navigate (导航) indoors. So many, many more applications would be possible with light,” Haas says. 18. What is essential to enable LEDs to send signals? A. The research work by pureLiFi. B. Quickly changing light of LEDs. C. Common use of LEDs in daily life. D. Accurate analysis of light intensity. 19. What does the sentence “It’s ubiquitous.” in Paragraph 3 probably mean? A. LiFi’s speed is superfast. B. LED lights are free to use. C. LEDs are stable in quality. D. Available spectrum is everywhere. 20. Haas mentions the examples in the last two paragraphs mainly to indicate LiFi’s ________. A. advantage in security B. mature application C. promising prospect D. rapid upgrades 【答案】18. D 19. D 20. 根据第二段中“That change in the brightness is what we exploit in order to encode data extremely fast, so that a receiver will then see these changes in the light intensity in a way a human eye would not be able to detect. Then we have algorithms (算法) to recover these changes and get back the data stream.(亮度的变化是我们利用的,以便极快地编码数据,以便接收器能够以人眼无法检测到的方式看到光强度的这些变化。然后我们有算法(算法)来恢复这些更改并取回数据流。)”可知,LED传输信号是以人眼看不到的亮度变化来传递的,光强度的变化通过再通过特殊的算法恢复其中的信息。能否准确传递信息的关键就是可否能够准确分析光强度。故选D。 【19题详解】 句意猜测题。根据第三段中“What’s more, the visible light spectrum (频谱) is about ten thousand times larger than the radio spectrum. This would allow communication systems to not only use a spectrum that’s already been set up, but vast amount of free spectrum, which is in cars, in our LED lights at home, in streetlights and so on. (更重要的是,可见光谱(频谱)比无线电光谱大一万倍左右。这将使通信系统不仅可以使用已经建立的频谱,还可以使用大量的自由频谱,这些频谱存在于汽车,我们家中的LED灯,路灯等中。)”可知,LED通信频谱覆盖面广,应用也非常广泛,由此可推测It’s ubiquitous的含义为可用频谱无处不在,故选D。 【20题详解】 细节理解题。根据第五段中“One interesting application could be to use car headlights to communicate with other drivers on the road.(一个有趣的应用可能是使用汽车前灯与道路上的其他司机进行交流。)”及第六段中“That is where LiFi plays a key role. From home sensing of interior, you’d find out if people have fallen down and the way you would navigate (导航) indoors. So many, many more applications would be possible with light(这就是LiFi发挥关键作用的地方。从家庭内部感应,你会发现人们是否摔倒了,以及你在室内导航(导航)的方式。光可以带来如此多的应用)”可知,LiFi可以应用的场景很多,前景广阔。故选C。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Stare at a blank wall in any room, and you are unlikely to learn much more than the paint color. But a new technology can inconspicuously scan the same surface for shadows and reflections. ____21____ But they can be got by one tool and analyzed to determine details including how many people are in the room—and what they are doing. This tool could gather information from a partial view of a space. It can spy on activity from around a corner. ____22____ As people move around a room, their bodies block a portion of any available light to create delicate and indistinct “soft shadows” on walls. ____23____ But these faint (微弱的) signals are usually drowned out by the main source of environment light. “If we neglect whatever we are observing, you would just be left with camera noise—and signal,” says Prafull Sharma, a graduate student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Sharma and other researchers did the experiment by filming a wall in a room as its occupants moved around and averaging the frames over time. ____24____ Then the team fed the videos into a machine-learning model to teach it which soft shadow patterns indicated which behavior. The resulting system can automatically analyze footage of a blank wall in any room in real time, determining the number of people and their actions. ____25____ It can register only group sizes and activities for which it has been trained, and it requires a high-resolution camera; a standard digital camera creates too much background noise, and smartphone camera results are even worse. A. The technology is thought advanced. B. These can’t be caught by the human eye. C. They recorded various activities of the people in the room. D. Brightly colored clothing can even cast a light reflected glow. E. It also can monitor someone who avoids a camera’s line of sight. F. The system is considered a unique and wonderful discovery by camera specialists. G. Although this system can function in any room, it performs poorly in dim lighting. B 22. E 23. D 24. C 25. 【21题详解】 上文“But a new technology can inconspicuously scan the same surface for shadows and reflections.( 但是一项新技术可以在不明显情况下扫描同一表面上的阴影和反射。)”提到了一项可以扫描阴影和发射的新技术,下文“But they can be got by one tool and analyzed to determine details including how many people are in the room—and what they are doing.( 但它们可以通过一种工具获得并分析,以断定包括房间里有多少人以及他们正在做什么在内的细节。)” 【22题详解】 上文“This tool could gather information from a partial view of a space. It can spy on activity from around a corner.( 这个工具可以从一个空间的局部视图收集信息。它可以在角落里监视活动。)”阐述了这个工具的功能,可以在角落里监视,收集信息,E项中的“monitor”与“spy”意思相近,因此推断E项“它还可以监控那些避开摄像头视线的人。”符合语境,与上文是并列关系,also是关键词。故选E。 【23题详解】 上文“As people move around a room, their bodies block a portion of any available light to create delicate and indistinct “soft shadows” on walls.(当人们在房间里走动时,他们的身体会挡住任何可用的光线,在墙壁上创造出微妙而模糊的“柔软的阴影”。)” 【24题详解】 上文“Sharma and other researchers did the experiment by filming a wall in a room as its occupants moved around and averaging the frames over time.( Sharma和其他研究人员做了这个实验,他们拍摄房间里的一堵墙,让墙里的人四处走动,随着时间的推移,平均这些帧数。)”讲述实验人员拍摄下人们走动的情况下的墙面,讲述实验过程,下文“Then the team fed the videos into a machine-learning model to teach it which soft shadow patterns indicated which behavior.( 然后,该团队将这些视频输入机器学习模型,教它哪种柔软的阴影模式表示哪种行为。)” 【25题详解】 下文“It can register only group sizes and activities for which it has been trained, and it requires a high-resolution camera; a standard digital camera creates too much background noise, and smartphone camera results are even worse.( 它只能记录它为之受训过的团体规模和活动,而且它需要一个高分辨率的相机;标准的数码相机会产生太多的背景噪音,而智能手机的拍摄效果更差。)” enable typical significant assume dress up perform reflect decorate in relief fall in love with 26. People make themselves into winners by their own efforts. I learned this lesson from an experience many years ago. I took the head coaching job at a school in Baxley, Georgia. It was a small school with a weak football program. It was a tradition for the school’s old team to play against the new team at the end of spring practice. The old team had no coach, and they didn’t even practice to prepare for the game. Being the coach of the new team, I was excited because I knew we were going to win, but to my disappointment we were defeated. I couldn’t believe I had got into such a situation. Thinking hard about it, I came to realize that my team might not be the number one team in Georgia, but they were depending on me. I had to change my attitude about their ability and potential. I started doing anything I could to help them build a little pride. Most importantly, I began to treat them like winners. That summer, when the other teams enjoyed their vacations, we met every day and practiced passing and kicking the football. Six months after suffering our defeat on the spring practice field, we won our first game and our second, and continued to improve. Finally, we faced the number one team in the state. I felt that it would be a victory for us even if we lost the game. But that wasn’t what happened. My boys beat the best team in Georgia, giving me one of the greatest thrills of my life! From the experience I learnt a lot about how the attitude of the leader can affect the members of a team. Instead of seeing my boys as losers, I pushed and encouraged them. I helped them to see themselves differently, and they built themselves into winners. Winners are made, but born. 44. What did the coach realize after the new team was defeated at the end of spring practice? ____________________________________________________________________________________. 45. In what ways did the coach do to help the boys in the team? ____________________________________________________________________________________. 46. According to the passage, please complete the following sentence. The coach didn’t see the boys as losers. Instead, he pushed and encouraged them and ____________________________________________________________________________________. 47. Please briefly write about one of your experiences in which you achieved your goal through your own efforts. (about 40 words) ____________________________________________________________________________________. 44. B As a shoe cobbler, Jim McFarland has spent his career with his eyes trained downward on his work. McFarland is an advocate for buying high-quality shoes and mending them as needed rather than purchasing inexpensive and trendy shoes that tend to not weather well. A he graduated from college B. his family needed his help C. his video gained popularity D. he found his childhood interest 16. Which of the following words can best describe McFarland? A. Skillful and devoted. B. Open-minded and creative. C. Friendly and considerate. D. Hard-working and ambitious. 17. What can we learn from the passage? A. High quality makes fast fashion. B. Social media challenges tradition. C. Creativity holds the key to success. D. Mending contributes to eco-fashion. C Lighting has come a long way since Tom Edison lit his first incandescent bulb (白炽灯泡) in the 1880s. A. advantage in security B. mature application C. promising prospect D. rapid upgrades Stare at a blank wall in any room, and you are unlikely to learn much more than the paint color. B These can’t be caught by the human eye. C. They recorded various activities of the people in the room. D. Brightly colored clothing can even cast a light reflected glow. E. It also can monitor someone who avoids a camera’s line of sight. F. 44.
