A New Zealand man, Nigel Richards, recently won an international Spanish Scrabble competition although he does not speak Spanish. In the competition, he lost one game out of 24. Scrabble is a board game in which players form words from letters to gain points.
Nothing like the New Zealander’s win had ever happened in Spanish Scrabble, said Alejandro Terenzani, an organizer of the competition. “It was impossible to react negatively — you can only be amazed,” Terenzani said. “We certainly expected that he would perform well, but it is perhaps true that he was beyond our expectations.”
Many people are wondering how Richards could win without speaking Spanish. Liz Fagerlund is a New Zealand Scrabble official and a friend of Richards. She recently said that Richards had started memorizing the Spanish language Scrabble word list one year before. She said, “He can’t understand why other people can’t just do the same thing. He can look at a block of words together, and once they go into his brain as a picture, he can just remember that very easily.”
However, the recent Scrabble competition is not the first that Richards has won in a language that he does not speak. Richards is a professional Scrabble player. He holds five English-language world championships in the board game. In 2015, he became the French language Scrabble world champion although he does not speak French. He studied the French language word list for nine weeks. He won the French championship again in 2018.
Richards is known in the world of international Scrabble as the greatest player of all time. He has been playing in competitions for about 30 years. But other players have said his Spanish language victory was notable even by his standards.
Richards now lives in Malaysia. He never speaks to reporters. “I get lots of requests from journalists wanting to interview him, but he’s not interested,” Fagerlund said.
24.What makes Richards’ victory in the Spanish Scrabble competition different?
A.He won 24 games easily.
B.He achieved victory without speaking Spanish.
C.He became professional in Spanish within one year.
D.He befriended an organizer of the competition.
25.What do Fagerlund’s words about Richards show?
A.Richards has a unique and powerful memory.
B.Other players should learn from Richards.
C.Richards has a special way of writing Spanish.
D.Memorizing word lists is the key to winning Scrabble.
26.What does paragraph 4 focus on?
A.The competition Richards faced in similar matches.
B.Richards’ achievements in Scrabble competitions.
C.The efforts Richards made to win the Spanish Scrabble.
D.Richards’ journey to becoming a professional Scrabble player.
27.Which words can best describe Richards?
A.Creative and cool-headed. B.Popular and ambitious.
C.Responsible and easy-going. D.Talented and mysterious.

The robots are coming! In science fiction that is usually a terrible warning. Even if we know robots are not literally the murderous machines of films in which the inventor loses control of his creation, they can inspire fear. In the real world, they are able to kill off well-pa id jobs in factories and warehouses. However, the latest advances in robotics will bring real and basic benefits.
New “multimodal” AI models combine understanding of language and vision with data. This makes it possible to deal with robots using ordinary words. You can ask a robot what it is able to see or tell it to “pick up the yellow fruit”. Such models in effect allow robots a degree of common sense — in this case, knowing that a nearby banana is a kind of yellow fruit. You can tell a robot to adjust its behaviour simply by changing an instruction, something that would previously have required complex reprogramming.
The new models enable robots to explain the reasoning behind their actions. That is useful when they behave in unexpected or unwelcome ways. So long as robots’ brains are not confusing black boxes, programming and debugging them is fairly straightforward, carefully examining its code and inner systems to check any mistakes. The new models are also less likely to make things up, as the way they perceive things is rooted in observations of the world, and they aim to ensure that cognitive and physical reality match.
Labour markets across the rich world are tight and getting tighter as societies age. Advanced economies will need more automation (自动化) if they are to maintain their standards of living as they are aging rapidly. Without robots to help out, more people may have to work longer and retire later. In the coming years, attitudes could well change from fearing the arrival of robots to wishing that they would get here sooner.
28.In the real world, robots can cause people’s fear mainly because ________.
A.they are often described as murderous machines in films
B.they can take away well-paid jobs in some places
C.they may lose control of their inventors
D.they have a degree of common sense which is unexpected
29.The word “debugging” in paragraph 3 most closely means ________.
A.locating and identifying errors B.controlling a robot’s movements
C.creating new instructions for robots D.predicting future robot behaviors
30.What does the author’s attitude towards robots in an aging society??
A.Pessimistic. B.Indifferent. C.Doubtful. D.Approving.
31.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.“Robotic Threats: From Fiction to Reality”.
B.“Multimodal AI: Bridging Language and Robotics”.
C.“Aging Populations and the Automation Imperative”.
D.“Shifting Perspectives: Robots as Solutions, Not Threats”.
D
Have you ever seen a live spade-toothed whale It is the world’s rarest kind of whale. Do you know how many of them exist, what they eat, or even where they live in the southern Pacific Ocean? Scientists in New Zealand may finally get to learn more about them.
The country’s conservation agency said that it believed a dead spade-toothed whale had been washed up on a South Island beach earlier this month. Scientists identified the whale by its color patterns and the shape of its organs-its head, mouth and teeth. Hannah Hendriks is a sea life expert for the Department of Conservation. She said, “This is going to lead to some amazing science and world-first information.”
In the past, only a few other dead spade-toothed whales appeared on New Zealand’s beaches. Most notably, scientists didn’t have a chance to closely examine them, but now, they will be able to. They have moved the whale to a cold place for their investigation.
“Spade tooth whales live deep in the ocean. They come to the surface so rarely that scientists only know their general location in the southern Pacific Ocean. It is home to some of the world’s deepest ocean areas. It’s very hard to do research on marine mammals (海洋哺乳动物) if you don’t see them at sea,” Hendriks said. “You don’t know where to look.”
Kirsten Young is a senior lecturer at the UK’s University of Exeter. She studies spade-toothed whales. She wrote in an email that it took many years and a lot of efforts by researchers and local people to identify the whales. “This new discovery makes me wonder how many there are in the deep ocean and how they live,” Young said.
In fact, researchers studying the mammal couldn’t confirm if the species died out or went extinct, until in 2010, two spade toothed whales, both dead, appeared on a New Zealand beach. Samples of their cells later showed they were spade-toothed whales.
32.How does the author begin the text?
A.By raising questions. B.By giving examples.
C.By listing numbers. D.By making comparisons.
33.Why is the discovery of the spade-toothed whale important?
A.It shows a new kind of whale exists.
B.It identifies the whale by its place of death.
C.It confirms the whale’s population is on the rise.
D.It allows scientists to study the whale up close.
34.What did Hendriks stress about the spade-toothed whale research in paragraph 4?
A.Its reasons. B.Its benefits. C.Its challenge. D.Its process.
35.What is Young’s attitude to the new discovery?
A.Worried. B.Curious. C.Doubtful. D.Indifferent.

Before diving into a study, have you ever spent some time checking the length of the text or the number of pages you need to read? The feeling of relief if it’s short or the complaint if it’s quite long is all too familiar, 36 It can really improve your study experience and help you manage time better.
But did you know that another similar but better method exists? It’s called the THIEVES method, and it comes with a lot of new benefits. 37 This promotes your understanding of the material and improves your ability to recall it later.
This method is recommended widely to children, especially when it comes to teaching reading. 38 The THIEVES study method has been shown to be effective for students of all ages and levels of reading ability. I gets is name from the acronym (首字母缩略词) standing for its steps: Title, Heading, Introduction, Every first sentence, Visual, End of the text, and Summary.
39 The title gives you a clue about the text, enabling you to predict what it will cover. Headings tell you the main point of each part. The introduction offers an outline of the text. The first sentence of each paragraph usually summarizes its central idea. Reading them helps you rapidly master what each paragraph is about. Visuals such as photos and drawings aid in visualizing the information presented in the text. The last paragraph often points out the most important information. 40
A.Practice the steps in order.
B.This simple act is called previewing.
C.Many people are unwilling to use this method.
D.But don’t think that it can’t be used by older learners.
E.Each step plays an important role in understanding a text.
F.Finally, the summary will give you the whole picture of the text.
G.When practicing this approach, you “steal” information from specific parts of the text.

On our way back, we decided to walk along the beach instead of taking the taxi back home. We did not tell our aunt about all this, as she might refuse.
So off we ran to the beach, where we played happily on the sand, making little sand castles and collecting sea shells. We wrote our names on the sand only to be erased by the coming waves. We splashed (泼) water on each other’s faces, running and laughing. We had so much fun. Time passes so quickly when one is happy. Our games continued. The tide (潮水) was coming in but we were just unaware of anything.
It was beginning to get dark and we decided to move on. At one point we were shocked to see that we could not go any further as the waters had covered the place ahead. With fear we turned back. But to our surprise, the waters behind us had also touched the shore. Now we were left on a small dry patch (片) of land surrounded by water on all sides. We could not move forward, nor go back. Our only hope was a tall wall with huge rocks nearby. Climbing over it, we could get onto the road and take a taxi home.
Despite the fear, we didn’t give up, though. I decided to get Jack across the wall first. I picked him up and tried my best to get him across the wall, but we slipped (打滑) and fell from the rock into the water. He cried in pain and fear. I realized that on our own, we could never cross that big wall. Now only help from outside could save us. The ever rising water was making us frightened more and more.

Right now, you all have short-term ID. Those will only last until the end of the week, when classes start. After that, you’ll need your long-term Bryce College ID — to get onto campus, to use the library, and a lot of other things. And to get your long-term ID, you’ll need to go to the student administration office, which is on the ground floor of the main building — don’t worry, I’ll show you where that is. Now, you have short-term ID until the end of the week, but I wouldn’t wait until then if I were you. To get your long-term ID, you need to show your acceptance letter from the college plus one other form of ID documents, like a driver’s license, or a passport.

【答案】28.B 29.A 30.D 31.D
根据第一段“In the real world, they are able to kill off well-pa id jobs in factories and warehouses.(在现实世界中,他们能够消灭工厂和仓库里高薪的工作)”可知,在现实世界中,机器人之所以会引起人们的恐惧,主要是因为它们会在一些地方夺走高薪的工作。故选B。
故选A。
根据最后一段“Labour markets across the rich world are tight and getting tighter as societies age. Advanced economies will need more automation (自动化) if they are to maintain their standards of living as they are aging rapidly. Without robots to help out, more people may have to work longer and retire later. In the coming years, attitudes could well change from fearing the arrival of robots to wishing that they would get here sooner.(随着社会老龄化,整个发达国家的劳动力市场都很紧张,而且越来越紧张。发达经济体在迅速老龄化的同时,如果要维持生活水平,就需要更多的自动化。如果没有机器人的帮助,更多的人可能不得不延长工作时间,推迟退休。在未来的几年里,人们的态度很可能会从害怕机器人的到来转变为希望它们能早点到来)”可知,作者对老龄化社会中的机器人持赞成态度。故选D。
31.主旨大意题。根据第二段“New “multimodal” AI models combine understanding of language and vision with data. This makes it possible to deal with robots using ordinary words.(新的“多模态”人工智能模型将语言和视觉的理解与数据结合起来。这使得使用普通词汇与机器人打交道成为可能)”结合文章讲述了在科幻小说中,机器人来了通常是一个可怕的警告。然而,在现实生活中,机器人虽然可能使工厂和仓库中的高薪工作消失,但机器人技术的最新进展将给社会带来真实而重大的益处。可知,D选项“转变观点:机器人是解决方案,而不是威胁”最符合文章标题。故选D。

【答案】32.A 33.D 34.C 35.B
根据文章第一段“Have you ever seen a live spade-toothed whale (铲齿中喙鲸)? It is the world’s rarest kind of whale. Do you know how many of them exist, what they eat, or even where they live in the southern Pacific Ocean? (你见过活着的铲齿中喙鲸吗?它是世界上最稀有的鲸鱼种类。你知道它们存在的数量有多少、吃什么,甚至它们在南太平洋的生活地点吗?)”可知,作者开篇提出了几个关于铲齿中喙鲸的问题,所以作者是通过提出问题的方式开始这篇文章的。故选A。
根据文章第三段“In the past, only a few other dead spade-toothed whales appeared on New Zealand’s beaches. Most notably, scientists didn’t have a chance to closely examine them, but now, they will be able to. They have moved the whale to a cold place for their investigation.

It is home to some of the world’s deepest ocean areas. 35. 根据文章第五段“Kirsten Young is a senior lecturer at the UK’s University of Exeter. She studies spade-toothed whales. She wrote in an email that it took many years and a lot of efforts by researchers and local people to identify the whales. “This new discovery makes me wonder how many there are in the deep ocean and how they live,” Young said.

My brother Jack and I went to visit my Aunt, who lived very near the beach. I was just 15 then and Jack 5. We loved going to the beach but normally always went with mom or dad.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
In despair, we shouted for help, and miracle (奇迹) happened.

After saying thanks again and again to the two men, we returned home.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
In despair, we shouted for help, and miracle happened. Two kind men who were passing by heard our cries. They quickly came to our rescue, assessing the situation with calmness. One of them, a tall man with a reassuring voice, said, “Don’t worry, boys. We’ll get you out of here safely.” They found a long branch nearby and used it as a bridge to reach us. The other man, who had a strong build, carefully lifted Jack first and then helped me climb over the wall. Their determination and bravery gave us hope when we thought all was lost.
After saying thanks again and again to the two men, we returned home. To our surprise, we found that our aunt was actually in our house, waiting anxiously. When she saw us safe, she hugged us tightly, tears of relief in her eyes. We told her what had happened and how those two strangers had saved us. She scolded us gently for not telling her our plan but also praised the men’s kindness. It was a lesson I would never forget — the power of kindness and the importance of staying calm in danger.
