Lena's heart sank when she saw the photo on the poster. It was Shadow—or rather, Lucky. The woman explained that she had been searching for her dog for weeks. Tears welled up in Lena's eyes as she realized she would have to say goodbye to the dog who had helped her find confidence and friendship. The woman, noticing Lena's sadness, smiled softly and said, “Thank you for taking such good care of him. I can see how much he means to you.” Before leaving, she invited Lena to visit Lucky anytime. Lena and Emily began visiting Lucky every now and then. These visits became a cherished routine, and Lucky's excitement whenever he saw them was contagious. Slowly, Lena's fear of social interactions faded. She realized that making mistakes wasn't something to be afraid of—it was part of being human. Just like Lucky's wagging tail, her own imperfections could be lovable rather than embarrassing. With Emily's support and the lessons she learned from Lucky, Lena grew more confident. She even started participating more in class, no longer afraid of being judged. Through her journey with Lucky, Lena discovered that sometimes, helping someone — or something — else can lead to the greatest growth in yourself. 听力材料 Text 1 M: Do you have any requirements when deciding on a job offer? Whether you hope to summit a volcano, hike through the jungle or explore ancient ruins, Guatemala will not disappoint. Tikal National Park Tikal National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most famous places in Guatemala. Tikal covers an estimated 46 miles (around 74 km) and is one of the most extraordinary archaeological sites in Central America. It is here, centuries ago, that the ancient Mayan civilization boomed. Chichicastenango “Chichi,” as it’s known by the local Kiche population, hosts the largest market in Central America. The town comes alive on Thursdays and Sundays when vendors (小贩) come from surrounding areas to display their goods. The market bursts with varied colours and a lively atmosphere, stocking everything from vividly-colored cloth to traditional carved wooden masks. Guatemala City Brightly graffitied (涂鸦) walls line the busy streets in Guatemala City where you’ll find trendy stores, relaxing bars, and diverse art galleries. Make sure to check out La Esquina, an indoor food market with some of the best food stalls in the city. The Museo Popol Vuh is a leading museum in the world of Mayan art. Here you will be able to spend a couple of hours appreciating the incredible and comprehensive collection of Mayan as well as colonial art. Acatenango Volcano Volcano Acatenango towers almost 4,000 metres above the surrounding landscape just outside Antigua. The hike to the summit of this volcano is one of the toughest, yet most popular, in Guatemala. Not only will you get to appreciate the breathtaking views, but you will also have a bird’s-eye view of the nearby (and extremely active) Volcan Fuego. 21. What’s the best choice for someone interested in Mayan history? A. Tikal National Park. B. Chichicastenango. C. Guatemala City. D. Acatenango Volcano. 22. What do we know about Guatemala City? A. It hosts the largest market in Central America. B. It is a perfect destination for art lovers. C. You can buy vivid cloth and masks there. D. Museo Popol Vuh is a great food market. 23. What is special about Acatenango Volcano? A. A bird view of Guatemala City. B. The highest tower in Guatemala. C. The hike to the volcano summit. D. It is an extremely active volcano. B A bird called hermit warbler breeds(繁殖)along the U.S.West Coast. They all kind of look the same and they have a cute little yellow head and a gray body. Typically, birds sing the same one song within one region because the song attracts mates. And different regions can have slightly different dialects of the song. But recently biologists noticed that there are some places that are exceptions to this rule—in some places, there is more than one song in the same place. “So we were curious why that would be the case.” Brett Furnas, a bio-statistician at the California Department of Fish and Wildlife said. To investigate, Furnas and his team recorded lots of hermit warbler’s songs. In 10 years, they went to 100 different locations throughout the state and all the different potential habitats of the species. The researchers analyzed all the hermit warbler songs they collected and discovered that the hermit warbler doesn’t just break the usual one-song-per-region rule—they positively demolish it, for the researchers found, actually, an amazing 35 different dialects across the state. But why would the bird repeatedly “alter its song” when any changes could affect its ability to attract a mate? Basically, hermit warblers are very sensitive to fire in the short term, so they will abandon an area temporarily, even if it’s just a low-severity fire that doesn’t destroy the whole stand. And then other hermit warblers singing different dialects move into this area. And then they end up, maybe a few years later, with two or more different dialects in the same place. Furnas says that such musical diversity might actually work in the hermit warblers’ favor. “They may have greater resiliency(恢复力)to things like climate change. So understanding that helps us to make better conservation decisions to protect biodiversity. But it’s also what makes the outdoors interesting and a beautiful place to be, because even though you might not know it’s a hermit warbler, your experience outdoors is enriched by that diversity.” 24.What is the purpose of Furnas’ research on hermit warbler? A. To figure out how the bird breeds. B. To study the one-song-per-region rule. C. To find why its songs differ within one region. D. To investigate different habitats of the bird. 25.Why does hermit warbler frequently have its song “changed”? A. Because of the food shortage. B. Because of the less-severe wildfire. C. Because of the need to attract a mate. D. Because of the competition for habitats. 26.What does the last paragraph talk about? A. The effect climate change has on birds. B. The importance of biodiversity protection. C. The ways to enrich your outdoor experience. D. The significance of the musical diversity of hermit warbler. C In a new blog post for the International Monetary Fund, four researchers presented their findings from a working paper that examines the current relationship between finance and tech as well as its potential future. Gazing into their crystal ball, the researchers see the possibility of using the data from your browsing, search, and purchase history to create a more accurate mechanism for determining the credit rating of an individual or business. They believe that this approach could result in greater lending to borrowers who would potentially be denied by traditional financial institutions. At its heart, the paper is trying to wrestle with the dawning notion(观念)that the institutional banking system is facing a serious threat from tech companies like Google, Facebook, and Apple. The researchers identify two key areas in which this is true: Tech companies have greater access to soft-information, and messaging platforms can take the place of the physical locations that banks rely on for meeting with customers. The concept of using your web history to inform credit ratings is framed around the notion that lenders rely on hard-data that might hide the worthiness of a borrower or paint an unnecessarily bad picture during hard times. Citing soft-data points like “the type of browser and hardware used to access the internet, the history of online searches and purchases” that could be included in evaluating a borrower, the researchers believe that when a lender has a closer relationship with the potential client’s history, they might be more willing to cut them some slack. “Banks tend to cushion(缓冲)credit terms for their long-term customers during downturns,” the paper’s authors write. This is because they have a history and relationship with the customer. The researchers acknowledge that there will be privacy and policy concerns related to including this kind of soft-data in credit analysis. Many people graduate from school or college not knowing what to do with their lives, and get a job without really thinking about it. For some, things work out fine. ____31____Your working life lasts an average of forty years, so it’s important to find a job you like and feel enthusiastic about. Luckily, there are many ways you can get help to do this. The Australian website, www.careeronline.com, compares choosing a career with going to the movies. Before you see a movie, you find out what films are showing. ____32____—find out what jobs are available and what your options are. Next, decide which movie you like best; if you’re not a romantic person, you won’t want to see a love story. In other words, with your career, you should decide which job will suit your personality. ____33____ Meanwhile, you should find out where the theater is before you go. With your career, you need to find information about where you can work, how much you will earn, and how to get a job in that profession. So, how do you start? Begin by asking yourself some questions. ____34____ Have you travel overseas? Do you have any extra certificates besides your degree, such as a first aid license, for example? Your physical state and build can also affect which jobs you can do. A person, for example, who is allergic to cats would probably never become a veterinarian. Flight attendants, firefighters, and police officers have to be over a certain height, and be physically fit. ____35____ Are you outgoing and extroverted, or shy and introverted? If you like working alone, a job that requires lots of teamwork might not suit you. A. Your personality matters, too. B. Finally, decide how to get movie tickets. C. The site suggests you do the same with your career. D. Choosing a career can take time and a lot of thought. E. Some jobs require you to have certain life experiences. F. But others often find themselves stuck in a job they hate. G. At school, whenever someone tried to talk to her, her mind would race with worries: “What if I say something wrong? What if they think I’m strange?” These thoughts always made her stumble over her words or give awkward replies. Once, after she accidentally gave a wrong answer in class, she heard some classmates giggling (咯咯地笑). Since then, she had become even more afraid to speak up. One rainy afternoon, while walking home from school, she noticed a small dog huddled (蜷缩) under a bush. The dog looked lost and scared, just like how she felt whenever she tried to join in a conversation. It was shivering, wet, and alone. Lena crouched down and gently approached it. The dog wagged (摇摆) its tail slightly and came closer. Lena noticed a blue collar hidden under its wet fur. Something about its trusting eyes made her heart ache. She decided to take it home. Her parents agreed to keep it temporarily while searching for its owner. Lena named the dog “Shadow” because it followed her everywhere, just like her own shadows of selfdoubt. As days passed, Lena noticed how naturally Shadow interacted with everyone. At the park, he would approach others with complete confidence and make friends effortlessly. Even when he made mistakes, like accidentally knocking over someone’s water bottle, his friendly tail wag would make everyone laugh with him, not at him. Taking Shadow for walks gave Lena unexpected friendships. Emily, a girl from her class, often came to the park with her own dog. They started talking about their pets, and soon Emily became Lena’s first real friend. Through Emily, Lena met other kids and gradually found herself part of a group that would meet at the park to play with their dogs. For the first time, she felt like she belonged. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。 One day, a woman carrying a “Lost Dog: Lucky” poster walked into the park. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Lena and Emily began visiting Lucky every now and then. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第 1 页 共 1 页(高二英语) 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
