试题满分:150分 考试时间:120分钟
一、阅读理解(每小题3分,共15小题)
A
Six annoying “facts” people have to finally stop believing in
1. Walt Disney did not create Mickey Mouse.
His close friend and collaborator Ub Iwerks did, though he was “denied credit” for creating this major piece of pop culture history. Iwerks came up with the character in 1928.
2. Albert Einstein never flunked a math class as a child.
When the adult Einstein was shown a newspaper article claiming he had, he replied, “Before I was 15, I had mastered differential and integral calculus (微积分).” While Einstein achieved high grades throughout his childhood education, he “hated the strict protocols followed by teachers and rote learning demanded of students” at the schools he attended.
3. Napoleon Bonaparte was not short.
Despite the fact that his name has become synonymous with “angry short man,” Napoleon Bonaparte was actually of average height for the time period in which he lived. His contemporaries described him as being 5'2", but the French measured height differently back in the day, so he was actually around 5'5". That made him just “an inch or so below the period’s average adult male height.”
4. Isaac Newton didn't discover gravity because an apple struck him on the head.
Rather, he witnessed an apple falling and wondered why objects always fall down instead of up or sideways, a thought that inspired his Law of Universal Gravitation.
5. Bats are not blind.
No, bats are not blind. Bats have small eyes with very sensitive vision, which helps them see in conditions we might consider pitch black. They don't have the sharp and colorful vision humans have, but they don't need that.
6. Black holes.
Not really “holes” but rather hugely dense objects with massive gravitational pull.
1. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?
A. Unable to achieve high grades at school Einstein hated the rigid rules.
B. Bats have small eyes but with the same sharp and colorful vision as humans.
C. Newton discovered gravity out of curiosity but by accident.
D. Black holes are huge objects with massive gravitational push.
2. The text is written here in order to________.
A. present some common beliefs B. clarify some popular myths
C. relate some interesting stories D. list some historical facts
3. Which section of a magazine may this text be found in?
A. Entertainment. B. History. C. Education. D. Popular science.

Esperanto (世界语) was created in the late 1800s by Ludwik Lejzer Zamenhof, a Polish medical doctor. He alone built the basis for the language and helped introduce it into the world.
Though Zamenhof’s profession was a physician, he was no amateur (外行) in languages. Zamenhol said Russian was his mother tongue — the area of Poland he lived in was then part of the Russian Federation — but he generally spoke Polish everyday. Evidence also shows that he learned Yiddish from his mother and that he studied German, English, Spanlsh, Lithuanian, Italian and French. In addition, Zamenhof learned the classical languages Hebrew, Latin and Aramaic in school. Esperanto was not the first constructed language he’d dealt with. First, he learned a bit of Volapuk (沃拉普克语), which was invented in Germany a decade before Esperanto. Having command of so many languages had a great impact on his creation of Esperanto, which was Zamenhof’s 14th language.
During his life, Zamenhof became extremely interested in the idea of creating a tolerant world, free from the horrors (恐怖) of war. He dreamed of a day when people could come together. To make this world a reality, he decided the best thing he could do was make an international language. It would not be anyone’s mother tongue, but people can quickly learn it as a second language to make conversation easily with people from anywhere in the world.
Why would Zamenhof create Esperanto when English basically already was used as an international language? The problem is that using English gives a huge advantage to people and places that already speak English. Esperanto tries to bypass political and cultural problems by being a neutral (中性的) language. Yet Esperanto is not without flaw. It was strongly influenced by European language, which can put people who speak Asian languages at a distinct disadvantage in learning and speaking Esperanto. Esperanto’s simple rules might make it easier to learn than other languages for an Asian speaker, but it still loses some of its “neutrality”.
4. Which language was Zamenhof’s mother tongue?
A. Russian. B. German. C. Spanish. D. Italian.
5. Zamenhof was able to create Esperanto because ________.
A. he had mastered Volapuk B. he had been to many countries
C. he was an amateur in learning languages D. he was influenced by the 13 languages he had learnt
6. What gave Zamenhof the idea of creating Esperanto?
A. His family background. B. His desire for a peaceful world.
C. His interest in classical languages. D. His experience as an international student.
7. What does the underlined word “flaw” mean in the last paragraph?
A. Significance. B. Difficulty. C. Weakness. D. Contribution.
C

Somalia, Kenya, and now Ethiopia are warning of a serious drought that affects millions of people in Eastern Africa. In Ethiopia’s Somali area, people have seen the failures of what should have been three straight rainy seasons. Droughts do come and go over the years. However, the lack of rainfall has led to the driest conditions in 40 years in parts of Somalia and Ethiopia.
UNICEF is the United Nations’ children’s agency. Local Zaynab Wali told a visiting team with UNICEF that she and her seven children had never seen a drought like this. She said the government gave out food for animals during the last drought five years ago. “This time, we even don’t have enough food for our family.”
Children walk among the bodies of dead animals, which died from lack of food and energy. Somalia Consortium works to improve international aid for Somalia. It said in a separate statement that in Somalia, more than 7 million people need emergency help. It is asking international organizations to give much more to the country.
“We are just one month into the long dry season, and I have already lost 25 goats and sheep,” Hafsa Bedel in Ethiopia’s Somali area told UNICEF. She also lost four camels, a large desert animal, as well. She said there was nowhere for her animals to eat. She added that there was not enough food for her own family, including her six children.
UNICEF thinks that more than 150,000 children in such areas of Ethiopia have dropped out of school. They are needed to help find the limited amount of water and help their families with other work.
One young boy was seen supporting an animal, a donkey. The donkey was once important for carrying goods. But now, it had become too weak to walk on its own.
12. Why did Zaynab Wali mention the last drought?
A. To show the need to protect animals. B. To express her disappointment this time.
C. To prove the high frequency (频率) of drought. D. To praise the government for its timely help.
13. What is Somalia Consortium trying to do now?
A. Get more foreign help. B. Warn people of the risk of drought.
C. Offer more education to the children there. D. Make clear the number of people in need.
14. What does the last paragraph mainly want to tell us?
A. The seriousness of the drought.
B. The functions of animals in farming.
C. The sweet picture of the boy and the animal.
D. The importance of taking care of the weak animal.
15. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Drought in Eastern Africa Leaves Animals in Danger
B. UN Officials Care for Children Affected by Drought
C. Millions Face Risk as Drought Affects Eastern Africa
D. Drought Makes People of Eastern Africa Leave Their Home

She worked hard to provide for her children, doing a few part-time jobs to make ends meet. In spite of the challenges, Mary managed to give them a happy and stable childhood.
One Saturday morning, Mary was at home with her children, preparing breakfast for them. Jack was beside her while James was playing alone in the bedroom next to the kitchen. It was a typical weekend, filled with laughter and warmth. Little did they know something unexpected was just around the corner.
As Mary was busy with the food, a fire broke out in the kitchen. Panicked, Mary took hold of Jack and rushed towards the front door. They made it to safety only to find James remained stuck inside. Mary put Jack down and turned back to get James out, but in such a hurry and panic, she missed a step and fell on the ground. Her right ankle got sprained so seriously that she couldn`t stand up. Mary sat on the ground helplessly, her tears mixed with screams, “My kid is still in the house. Somebody, help me!”
At that very moment, Simon, 52, a former army soldier in the same community as Mary, happened to pass her house and saw the terrible scene. He immediately ran across the yard to ask the crying mother where her kid exactly was.

三、七选五(每小题3分,共5小题)
Four Most Important Eye Expressions
The language of our eyes is one of the most powerful and useful tools of non-verbal (非语言的) communication. ___31___. The following are four most important eye expressions that we see every day.
1. ___32___
Researchers have long noticed that a sincere smile starts with our eyes. When we are sincerely happy, the skin around the corners of our eyes wrinkles (起皱纹). But a social, polite smile touches only our lips (嘴唇). The smile you are given is not in the eyes. For example, when a shop assistant smiles at you, offering help , you will immediately get the feeling that they are just trying to sell you something.
2. Shy eyes
People who avoid eye contact during a conversation are often considered as insincere. What does little or no eye contact mean then? ___33___
3. Friendly eyes
When you are carrying on a conversation, looking the speaker straight in the eyes sends a clear message to him: ___34___. This is why so many public speaking experts advise keeping eye contact with the speaker.
4. “Shut” eyes
Covering the eyes for a long period of time sends a message that you are trying to block out something that you do not want to hear. For example, a man who is asked to work on the weekend may cover his eyes with his fingers as he answers, “No problem.” ___35___.
A. Empty eyes
B. Smiling eyes
C. Such behavior is seen with liars
D. You are listening to him carefully
E. Anything from shyness to nervousness
F. What his gestures are showing is that he is not happy about it at all
G. So it is important to learn how to read the body language of the eyes
【答案】31. G 32. B 33. E 34. D 35. F
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了四种常见的眼睛的语言。
【31题详解】
上文“The language of our eyes is one of the most powerful and useful tools of non-verbal (非语言的) communication.(我们眼睛的语言是非语言交流中最强大、最有用的工具之一)”提到了眼睛的语言的作用,G选项“所以学习如何解读眼睛的肢体语言是很重要的”与上文构成因果关系,符合语境。故选G项。
【32题详解】
下文“Researchers have long noticed that a sincere smile starts with our eyes.(研究人员早就注意到,真诚的微笑始于我们的眼睛)”提到了微笑,B选项“微笑的眼睛”能概括下文内容。故选B项。
【33题详解】
上文“People who avoid eye contact during a conversation are often considered as insincere. What does little or no eye contact mean then?(在谈话中避免目光接触的人通常被认为是不真诚的。那么,很少或没有目光接触意味着什么呢?)”提到了避免目光接触,且本段小标题“Shy eyes(害羞的眼睛)”提到了害羞的问题,E选项中shyness是关键词与本段小标题呼应,所以E选项“从害羞到紧张”符合语境。故选E项。
【34题详解】
上文“When you are carrying on a conversation, looking the speaker straight in the eyes sends a clear message to him(当你在进行谈话时,直视说话人的眼睛会向他传达一个明确的信息)”提到了谈话和传递信息,所以D选项“你在认真听他说话”应该是是谈话时传递的信息内容。故选D项。
【35题详解】
上文“For example, a man who is asked to work on the weekend may cover his eyes with his fingers as he answers, “No problem.” (例如,一个被要求在周末工作的人可能会在回答“没问题”时用手指遮住眼睛)”提到了用手遮住眼睛这一手势,选项F中gestures是关键词与上文呼应,构成顺承关系,所以F选项“他的手势表明他对此一点也不高兴”符合语境。故选F项。

【答案】One possible version:
The Importance of Oral English Learning
In my opinion, oral English learning is of great significance for high school students. Firstly, oral English skills are essential for effective communication. Without good oral English skills, we may find it difficult to express ourselves clearly and understand others in class discussions or social interactions. Secondly, oral English learning can enhance our confidence. We will feel more confident when facing English-speaking situations, such as job interviews or international exchanges.
To improve our oral English skills, I suggest the following methods. Firstly, we can participate in English corners or language exchange activities to have conversations with native speakers or other English learners, which will help us become more comfortable and fluent in speaking English. Secondly, we can improve our pronunciation, vocabulary, and listening skills by immersing ourselves in English language and culture.

36-year-old Mary was a single mother living in a small town in Cleveland, Ohio with her 3-year-old twin sons, Jack and James.
In a shaking voice, Mary responded, “In the bedroom next to the kitchen.” The fire spread quickly and the house was filled with thick smoke. Simon looked around and saw a blanket hanging beside a pool full of water in the middle of the yard.

【答案】范文
Without hesitation, Simon took action. Dipping the blanket in the water pool and covering his head with it for necessary protection, he rushed into the house. Unable to see things clearly through the smoke and fire, Simon lowered himself to the ground, stretched his hands and felt his way forward until he reached the bedroom. Just then, a faint voice of a child caught his attention. Following the sound, he finally found James lying in a corner, frightened and helpless. He grabbed James, wrapped him in the blanket and made his way back towards the open door.
Simon rushed out of the burning house with James in his arms. Seeing James carried to safety, Mary breathed a sigh of relief. At that moment, firefighters arrived at the scene and put out the fire. Then Simon, Mary and her children were all sent to a nearby hospital, where they received timely medical care. Simon’s heroic act saved James’ life. Mary couldn’t thank him enough for his selflessness and bravery. But Simon said smilingly, “It was no big deal. I just did what I was supposed to do.” This experience brought the community closer, and Simon`s courageous act inspired others to consider what they would do in similar situations.
