Are you an optimist or a pessimist? Optimists are always hopeful and positive. Pessimists always expect the worst and see the negative side of things. The optimist says, “The glass is half-full.” The pessimist says, “The glass is half-empty.”
Dr. Seligman is a psychologist whose studies show that optimists are healthier than pessimists. Pessimists suffer from depression more often than optimists do. Dr. Seligman studied a group of men who were heart attack victims (受害者). After eight years, most of the optimistic men were still alive, while most of the pessimistic men had died from another heart attack.
Dr. Seligman also says that optimists are more successful. People who have optimistic views of the world are likely to succeed.
Here’s the good news: Everyone can learn to be more optimistic. The main way is to change the way you talk to yourself. When something bad happens to pessimists, they believe it will affect their whole lives. When something bad happens to optimists, they see it as just one event. They also believe that they can tackle the problem, so it won’t happen again. Here’s an example:
An optimist and a pessimist take a math test. They are both good students, but both of them fail this test. The pessimist thinks, “I’m probably going to fail every test. I’m never going to learn math. It’s too difficult for me.” The optimist thinks, “It was only one test. I’m a smart student. I know I can do much better next time.”
Be kinder to yourself. Be more hopeful. Always see the glass as half-full!
13. What happened to the heart attack victims who were pessimistic after 8 years?
A. Most of them died.
B. Half of them were healthy.
C. More people were successful.
D. Some people change the way they think.
14. What should people do to become more optimistic?
A. Be hopeful about others.
B See the glass as half-empty.
C. Learn to give up doing something.
D. Say encouraging things to yourself.
15. What does the underlined word “tackle” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. Find. B. Solve. C. Choose. D. Design.
16. What can be the best title for the text?
A. The Power of Positive Thinking B. The Benefits of Keeping Healthy
C. The Secrets of Being Successful. D. The Influence of Improving Oneself

One morning, the three fish were taken to shallow (浅的) water by a big wave. A small boat was taken there, too. It was hard for the fish to go back to the sea because the boat was right in front of them. The largest fish realized that they were in danger, and said they had to find a way to leave there as fast as possible. The second largest fish agreed with his elder brother, but the youngest one did not. He said that there was much water for their activities, so he would not worry at all and still swam around happily.
At last, the largest fish returned to the sea by jumping over the lowest part of the boat. The second largest fish also succeeded in joining his elder brother in the other side of water. But the youngest one didn’t follow them and still swam joyfully.
Two hours later, when the Sun rose up, the water in the small shallow corner dried up. The fish who did not try to return to the sea died of lack of water. He couldn’t swim happily with his two older brothers anymore.

B. See the glass as half-empty.
C. Learn to give up doing something.
D Say encouraging things to yourself.
