Feeling bored can also be a goodchance for us to learn new things
These days many people spend hours looking at their phones. Why? A possible answer is that they just feel bored. Why don’t we like feeling bored?
What is boredom?
Boredom is a feeling. There are two kinds of boredom: meaningless and attentional (注意力相关的). The first type happens when we don’t find meaning in our actions. The second type comes when people find it too difficult to focus on something. For example, students might say that “math is boring”. That is because it’s too difficult for them.
Is boredom bad?
Boredom is neither good nor (既不……也不……) bad. What matters is our attitude. For example, we may find a math problem boring. If we can’t deal with (处理) our feelings well, we might just give up and feel bad. But things change when we can control (控制) our feelings and try to solve (解决) the problem. Boredom can then become a good chance (机会) to learn new things.
Are we more bored now?
No, boredom is not a new thing. Over 2,000 years ago, people already felt bored. However, it’s now much easier to get away from boredom because of things like phones. But because we’re always using them, we might be worse at dealing with boredom.
57. What are the two kinds of boredom?
A. Good and bad. B. Short and long.
C Meaningful and common. D. Meaningless and attentional.
58. Why might students find math boring according to Paragraph 2?
A. They find it too difficult for them.
B. They think there is too much work to do.
C. They might not like their teacher.
D. They might not see why they need it.
59. What does the word “attitude” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. A goal. B. A feeling. C. A way of thinking. D. A piece of advice.
60. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. People are getting more bored now than before.
B. Boredom can help us to learn new things.
C. Mobile phones can make us less bored if we use it correctly.
D. We should stop using mobile phones to deal with boredom.

①Do you have trouble trying to create the next big idea? Why not try sitting back, relaxing and letting your mind wander? Yes, you heard that correctly. If you are in need of a new idea, try daydreaming.
②Daydreams allow your mind to run freely and even increase productivity in some situations. Daydreaming develops creativity which is why you have an ah-ha moment. Daydreaming allows you to come up with thoughts and ideas you did not realize you even had.
③Researchers from the University of California found relation between daydreaming and creative problem-solving. Their study includes making participants (参与者) first do an “unusual-use task”. It makes them try to think of as many different ways to use an object as they could.
④Then, the participants chose to do one of the following four things before doing the “unusual-use task” again: finish a difficult task, finish an easy task, take a 12-minute break, or skip (跳过) a 12-minute break and move right on to the task exercise again.
⑤Surprisingly, the group that performed best was the one that finished the easy task. Many participants reported that they were daydreaming while performing the easy task. So the researchers believed that this daydreaming might have helped unlock their creativity.
⑥But how could daydreaming help the brain come up with creative ways? The answer is your “unconscious thought”. Even when you are not actively working to solve a problem, it is still in the back of your mind. Your brain is still thinking about the problem, but in a much more subtle (不易察觉的) way.
⑦When you daydream, your mind is allowed to think in ways it normally would not. Because it is free of control (控制), it can create completely new and out-of-the-box ideas. Great ideas never come easily, but that does not mean you always have to work hard to get them. Feel free to do what you want and let your mind wander.

Did you know that some people in Britain live in boats instead of houses? It’s too expensive to buy a house. So people choose the “floating (漂浮的) houses”. There were over 35,000 boats on rivers in England and Wales in 2022. Many are people’s main homes.
One month, I’d be in the heart of the city; the next, I parked next to cows in the countryside,” he said. Liam Quinn, a 37-year-old musician, lived happily on a narrow boat (运河船) for five years in London. “I loved waking up to the water and swans.”
A small boat costs (花费) between 50,000 pounds (英镑) (about 456,000 yuan) and 100,000 pounds. That’s cheaper than buying an apartment (公寓) in London. In the richest places, the price of an apartment averages (平均) around 600,000 pounds.
But boat life isn’t all fun. Quinn had to move his boat every two weeks and clean the toilet every day. Yuck!
Still, Quinn loved his watery home. “You learn to fix things and make friends with others. Everyone is friendly and helpful!” he said.

No. 324 Wednesday, September 11th, 2024
September 10th, 2024 is the 40th Chinese Teachers’ Day. Many schools held activities to celebrate Teachers’Day. Students in Luohu Foreign Languages Experimental School thanked their teachers by making videos, writing letters and drawing pictures.
Teachers’Day is a festival celebrating the 2300-year tradition of respecting teachers and education in China. Its history dates back to the Han Dynasty. So how was the day celebrated in ancient China?
During the Han and Jin Dynasties, on August 27th each year, the birthday of Confucius (孔子), the emperor would go to the Temple of Confucius and show respect for him. And on this day, teachers around the country enjoyed a day off and were given dried meat as gifts. Excellent teachers would be chosen from schools across the country and given money as awards. In the Qing Dynasty, teachers were paid more for their work in schools. The excellent teachers would also be given official titles(官衔)or higher positions.
Besides the birthday of Confucius, teachers could also get gifts on other certain festivals or at the beginning and the end of each term. The festival on which teachers got gifts were different in different places. The most important ones were the Dragon Boat Festival, the Mid-Autumn Festival and Spring Festival as well as Confucius’s birthday and the teacher’s birthday.
The tradition of thanking our teachers has always been an important part of Chinese culture. Remember to say thank you to your teachers for their hard work.

57 What are the two kinds of boredom?
A. Good and bad. B. Short and long.
C. Meaningful and common.

61. The writer starts the passage by ______.
A. telling a story B. giving examples
C. asking questions D. comparing differences
62. According to the passage, the “unusual-use task” makes participants ______.
A. find different uses for an object B. finish a very hard task
C. do a very simple task D. have a rest every 12 minutes

Did you know that some people in Britain live in boats instead of houses? It’s too expensive to buy a house. So people choose the “floating (漂浮的) houses”. There were over 35,000 boats on rivers in England and Wales in 2022. Many are people’s main homes.
One month I’d be in the heart of the city; the next, I parked next to cows in the countryside,” he said.
