C. any; interesting something D. any; something interesting

第一空,根据“Would you like ... books to read?”
2. — Is the boat ________ to carry 8 people over the river?
— Yes, it is. But there aren’t ________ for all 8 people.

D. enough big; enough life jackets

The number of……的数量;a number of许多,修饰可数名词复数;an amount of许多,后接不可数名词。根据“45”可知,第一空表达数量,选填“The number of”;根据“...them are interested in English”可知,此处表示“许多”学生,且“them”指代可数名词“students”,所以选填“a number of”。故选A。

either...or...连接主语时,谓语动词遵循“就近原则”,离谓语最近的主语是Tom,为单数,故第一空填is going to,排除B、D选项;challenge sb. to sth.

A. the fourth; are made from B. four; are made from
C. the four; are made of D. the fourth; are made of

be made of由……制成(可以看出原材料);be made from由…… 表示楼层要用序数词,序数词前加the,用the fourth;桌椅是木头做的,肉眼能看出原材料,用be made of,故选D。

Jiang Chunfang (1912-1987) was one of China’s most influential scholars (学者) in the 20th century. His greatest achievement was creating China’s first modern encyclopaedia, but his journey to this achievement was filled with challenges.
Born in Jiangsu Province, Jiang showed an early love for learning. After university, he translated a great deal of Russian literature into Chinese, introducing many important foreign ideas to China. However, Jiang dreamed of doing something bigger for his country.
In 1978, Jiang proposed (提议) an idea — China needed its own modern encyclopaedia, similar to those in Western countries. At that time, China lacked modern reference books (工具书), and students often couldn’t find answers to their questions.
The project faced many difficulties, including little money, few experts and no related experience. However, Jiang worked tirelessly, travelling across China to convince the best scholars to join him.
The first volume of the encyclopaedia was published in 1980. Over the next 13 years, Jiang’s team completed 73 more volumes covering every major subject from ancient Chinese history to modern technology. The encyclopaedia became famous for its correct information and special focus on Chinese culture and achievements.
Sadly, Jiang didn’t live to see the final volume published. He passed away in 1987, but his work continued. In 1993, the encyclopaedia was finally completed.

①International E-Waste Day takes place every year on October 14. It aims to highlight the problems of electronic waste. In 2023, it focused on “invisible” e-waste — things most people don’t think of as electronics.
②Electronic waste, or e-waste, is the name given to old electronic devices that were thrown away. These can include old computers, phones, TVs, as well as all kinds of other electronic devices. E-waste is a big problem. While electronics can make life easier and more entertaining, the devices aren’t good for the environment.
③As newer and more advanced devices come out, lots of electronic devices are thrown away, instead of being recycled. These things often end up in landfills, where the chemicals inside them may be a danger to the environment. Electronics can have dangerous materials like lead (铅) or mercury (水银). If these materials get into the ground or water, the pollution can cause serious problems.
④A group known as WEEE asked researchers from the United Nations to study a kind of e-waste that’s often not noticed. The WEEE calls this type “invisible” e-waste. The UN study shows that of all the 61 million tons of e-waste in a year, about 1/6 is “invisible”, and that the value of the unseen waste is worth about $9.5 billion a year.
⑤The surprising type leading the invisible e-waste group is toys. Worldwide, about 7.3 billion electronic toys are thrown away each year. These include toys like car racing sets, electric trains, musical toys and drones. In all, toys make up about 35% of the invisible e-waste.
⑥But the problem is far larger than just toys. The UN report shows that other everyday things like home alarms, smoke alarms, power tools and computer cables are also big sources of invisible e-waste. The report says that 36% of the world’s invisible e-waste comes from these types.
⑦Nowadays, more and more people and governments know about the harm of e-waste, and they will make a greater effort to make sure electronics get reused or recycled.
38. Why is e-waste a big problem?
A. Because it’s difficult to collect e-waste.
B. Because e-waste costs people too much money.
C. Because e-waste takes up too much space.
D. Because e-waste pollutes the environment.
39. How much invisible e-waste is there in a year?
A. About 60 million tons. B. About 6 million tons.
C. About 8 million tons. D. About 10 million tons.
40. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Few people will pay attention to invisible e-waste.
B. More landfills will be built to hold invisible e-waste.
C. More invisible e-waste will be thrown away everywhere.

Task 2:
We waited quietly on the station platform in the late afternoon. There he was, my 80-year-old grandfather with grey hair. And there I was, a teenage girl in jeans and a T-shirt. His eyes were still bright and blue, watching everything around. I was thinking how I could get through the next two days. “Why did I agree to take this train trip with my strange grandpa from our city to another?” I asked myself.
No one else wanted to travel with him, because Grandpa refused to take a plane. Unlike him, I loved to fly and hoped to arrive as quickly as possible.
Many people told Grandpa that flying was comfortable and safe. But he still didn’t want to book a flight. He said, “It is not only about arriving. The fun is the adventure of getting there.”
When I stepped onto the train, I found the trip was different from what I thought. The train was modern and it was filled with friendly travellers. We smiled and nodded to greet each other.
Grandpa and I sat in the dining car and watched beautiful views pass. We could enjoy food and drinks. Instead of listening to my music, I became a willing listener and I learned family history that I had never known before. I felt I understood him for the first time. I was thankful for our time together on the train.
The world changes fast, and we often miss great moments. It is necessary for us to slow down and listen to old people who can tell us their history and life experiences.
Life isn’t just about the final place. It’s about the journey.
53. Where did the writer and her grandpa wait for the train?

54. Why didn’t other people want to travel with Grandpa?

结合“Fan Shi made a...to visit Zhang Shao’s family in two years”和首字母提示可知,此处应是承诺做某事,make a promise“许诺”符合语境。

Today, Jiang is remembered as “The father of China’s encyclopaedia.” The encyclopaedia he created continues to help millions of Chinese people learn about their country.

D. More action will be taken to reduce the harm of e-waste.
41. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
A. ①②③ / ④⑤ / ⑥ / ⑦
B. ① / ②③ / ④⑤⑥ / ⑦
C. ① / ②③④ / ⑤⑥ / ⑦
D. ①② / ③④ / ⑤⑥ / ⑦
42. What is the purpose of writing the passage?
A. To tell the purpose of International E-Waste Day
B. To ask people to use fewer electronic devices
C. To make people notice invisible e-waste
D. To explain the meaning of invisible e-waste
