The pleasant smell of freshly baked bread filled the air as I opened my lunch box to see what my mom had prepared for me. On any other day, I would have eagerly dug into my mom’s homemade bread—a family recipe that I often enjoyed at home. But not today, the day a kind classmate had invited me, the new student, to join her friends for lunch.
As I prepared to walk over to the table, memories of previous school lunches came flooding back. I remembered feeling embarrassed as my friends would make faces when I brought homemade bread. I had once insisted that my mom pack “regular” lunches like store-bought sandwiches, and she had unwillingly agreed. From then on, my lunches were filled with typical school fare(饭菜). However, that day, she had packed a loaf of freshly baked bread from the night before.
As soon as I reached the new lunch table, I tried to hide my lunch box under my seat. I sat quietly, hoping not to draw attention to myself when Emily, a new friend, asked where my food was. “I’m not really hungry,” I replied in a hesitant voice. But Emily had already seen me with my lunch, so she said, “Then, I’ll try it!”
I didn’t want to be rude, so I reluctantly pulled out my lunch box. I prepared myself for their reactions, expecting them to turn up their noses(不屑一顾). But to my surprise, Emily took a small piece of bread and took a bite. My new friends were amazed at how delicious it was. They hadn’t expected homemade bread to taste so good. I felt a wave of pride and gratitude wash over me.
When I got home that afternoon, my mom noticed the empty bread container. She hesitated before asking, “How was the food?” I paused for a moment, then replied, “It was perfect, Mom. If possible, can I still have your homemade bread for lunch tomorrow?”
24. How did the author feel about her lunch that day according to paragraph 2?

A. She shared it out of politeness.
B. She tried to control her temper.
C. She refused to pull out her lunch box.

27. What can we infer from the passage?
A. The author expected Emily to dislike the homemade bread.
B. Emily was trying to embarrass the author by asking about her food.
C. The author will continue to enjoy her mom’s homemade bread for lunch.
D. It was the first time that the author had brought homemade bread to school.

“Is there a wife in a wife cake?” asked He Lixi, a local Cantonese.
“There is no actual wife in a wife cake, as it is just a traditional Hong Kong pastry(酥皮糕点),” answered Sensechat, a ChatGPT-like product, in fluent Cantonese.
He was impressed. Sensechat was the first artificial intelligence tool he had met that had a deep understanding of Cantonese language and culture. Many large language models(LLMs) from the mainland can’t recognize Cantonese accurately. Some Western-developed AI software can listen to Cantonese, but cannot speak it well.
Created by a Hong Kong company, Sensechat is the world’s first Cantonese LLM. Cantonese pronunciation uses lots of modal particles(语气助词), which are usually not conspicuous for most AI tools, but Sensechat handles them effectively. Sensechat also handles written forms of Cantonese.
Training an LLM takes efforts, said Cao Jianrong, the chair professor at the Department of Computing at Hong Kong Polytechnic University. It involves pre-training using extensive data, followed by fine-tuning(微调) with high-quality data. Later, more focused human input is needed to adjust the output of the LLM with local culture, ethics, morals, laws and other rules.
However, Cantonese web resources are limited in both quantity and quality. Most texts come from online forums and social media, and often contain low-quality language. Collecting clear speech data is also difficult, as many videos have background noise.
Despite the challenges, there’s a growing need for Cantonese-speaking AI. Nearly 120 million people worldwide speak the language, and 85.2 million are native Cantonese speakers. Without Cantonese AI tools, this population might face challenges using new technology in the future.
That’s why local tech companies are stepping up to create these tools. The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government is also working with local universities to create Cantonese LLMs.
28. What can we know about Sensechat?
A. It’s a ChatGPT-like product focusing only on spoken Cantonese.
B. It’s a Hong Kong company that develops large language models.
C. It’s an AI tool with an excellent understanding of Cantonese culture.
D. It’s a Western-developed LLM capable of speaking fluent Cantonese.
29. What do the underlined word “conspicuous” probably mean in paragraph 4?
A. noticeable. B. official. C. significant. D. simple.
30. What challenge is the training of LLM faced with?
A. Limited human input.
B. Unclear training rules.
C. A lot of web resources.
D. Low-quality language data.
31. What is the purpose of developing Cantonese-speaking AI?
A. To explore the future of LLMs.
B. To promote the Cantonese culture.
C. To meet the need of the Cantonese.
D. To expand the Cantonese AI market.

From Beijing, more than 400 kilometers away, all the way up north, the temperature gradually drops. With the emergence(出现) of fire prevention warnings, Saihanba(塞罕坝), known as a “miracle on earth”, begins to come into view. In October, the cold wind blowing from Siberia has dyed(染色) Saihanba golden.
In Mongolian, Saihanba means beautiful high mountains. However, Saihanba was a desert of “yellow sand covering the sky and flying birds without inhabiting trees” 62 years ago. Whenever the north wind blows, the windy sand located in Inner Mongolia will drive southward, reaching Beijing and Tianjin.
After more than half a century of forest plantation, people who have come to Saihanba can hardly imagine the arid(干旱) scene. Sometimes, a gust of wind passes by, and they would just sigh and shout how strong the wind is, but they would not feel sandblasted(喷砂).
On Oct 9, watchmen Liu Jun and Wang Juan were observing the surrounding forest area on a watchtower in Saihanba Forest Farm in Hebei province. Liu is in charge of the observation and Wang keeps recording.
“Spring and autumn are the critical fire prevention periods for our forest farm. We need to stay here for three months, have three meals a day, work and live in the building,” says Liu Jun, who has been devoted to observation for 13 years. Although it looks simple, the job is quite the burden on their shoulders. Only by enjoying loneliness can they keep this forest in good condition.
Saihanba today is not only a “green Great Wall” for windbreak(防风林) and sand fixation(固化), but also a timber(林木) source. Many people would doubt why the trees that have grown up here are to be cut down in a planned way. Liu explains that most of the trees here are planted forest, and the forest species are relatively single, unlike natural forests that can adapt on their own and survive the fittest. The selective cutting of plantation forests is more like thinning when farmers plant crops. Only in this way can the nutrient area be expanded and diseased plants also be removed to ensure the healthy development of the forest areas.
32. How does the author show the great change of Saihanba?
A. By giving examples.
B. By analyzing causes.
C. By making comparisons.
D. By quoting experts’ words.
33. Which of the following can best describe the watchmen’s job?
①Boring ②Time-consuming ③Complex ④Lonely ⑤Meaningful
A. ①②③ B. ①③④
C. ②③⑤ D. ②④⑤
34. Which of the following is NOT TRUE about the selective cutting of plantation forests?
A. It helps remove diseased plants from healthy ones.
B. It benefits the healthy development of the forest areas.
C. It means cutting down the trees casually and randomly.
D. It aims to make the trees planted here less thick or dense.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Timber Farm
B. The Green Guardian
C. The Golden Miracle
D. The Sand Wasteland

W: Oh no, I’m supposed to be on that flight.
M: Don’t worry. There are other flights that can take you to Shanghai.
W: Do I have to buy another ticket?
M: No, I’ll help you reschedule your flight. Hmm … It means a couple of transfers. Would you like a window seat or an aisle seat?
W: Window seat please. How long does the journey take?
M: The whole trip takes about 25.5 hours with stops in Toronto and Taipei. You are going to touch down in Shanghai at 12:05 p.m. on Monday.
W: Good. In that case, I won’t miss the conference on Tuesday morning. Do I have to have my luggage checked at the other two airports?
M: No, you needn’t. You can wait for your luggage in Shanghai.
W: Thank you. You really saved my life.
M: It’s my pleasure. Here is your ticket. Enjoy your trip.

M: Hello. What can I do for you?
W: Hi there. I’m calling to ask if there are any doctors who are seeing new patients now.
M: Yeah, we have Mrs. Anderson, the only doctor available during this period. It will take you a bit long to wait for her. We accept bookings for late August and early September, if that’s okay with you.
W: Yes.
M: Just give me one moment. Do you prefer morning or afternoon?
W: Afternoon please.
M: Okay, so August 30th sounds okay. Would you like to come over at 3:00, 4:20 or 5:40?
W: Let me have a check on my schedule. So you said August 20th, oh, 30th. Sorry. I think 5:40 would work the best for me.
M: What’s your name please?
W: Michelle Wright.
M: Perfect. It’s done. If there are any cancellations, please let us know in advance.
W: Thank you very much.

Good afternoon! My name is Michal Wójcik. I live in Poland and Polish is my native language. I am a mathematician and an enthusiast of English. Now I want to share my experience. I had my first contact with English when I was six. My dad inspired me to listen to The Beatles. I listened to them every day for the next seven years. In the beginning, I could understand nothing of what they were singing. But soon I started to understand individual words. When I was 13 years old, I started reading science fiction books. All of them were American books. But I read in Polish, because I did not know English so well. Two years later, somehow I felt that the books in English would be even more interesting. So I decided to read books in English. Soon I finished reading my first book in English. Currently, I study mathematics. Most of the books I use in my math institute’s library are in English. Without English, I would be limited to the few books which are in Polish, and there are really few of them. My knowledge of English is very important for my learning mathematics. Over a year ago I started to use only English in mathematical notes. Like most professional mathematicians, I can read math materials and publish my own materials now, with no language barriers. I feel free!
