One day a crow (乌鸦) came and flew on the stick of the lovely tree where a bluebird lived. The crow had been sitting on the stick for a while when the bluebird asked him to fly away. “This nice tree near the garden is my home,” the bluebird said.
“Oh, sorry,” replied the crow. “But I’d like to live in this tree because it’s easy for me to eat food here. From here I can see when Mrs Brown plants her seeds (种子) in the garden. Then I can fly down and eat them.”
“Let’s ask if any of our friends have an idea about who should live in this tree,” said the bluebird. “Then we will decide whose home it will be.”

The crow thought for a moment. Then he said, “I am sorry for what I did before, and this is what I will do. I will move to another tree down the path. I won’t eat seeds in Mrs. Brown’s garden. While the children were in the secret garden, Mr. Archibald Craven was travelling. He went to many countries and saw many beautiful places. But he was still sad.
One day in Austria after a long walk, he sat down to rest by a stream (小溪). When he looked around him, he saw some blue forget-me-nots (勿忘我草). He thought they were lovely. He looked at them for a long time and he began to feel very calm. That night he slept well. The next day he left Austria and went to Italy. He stayed next to a beautiful lake. One evening, while he was sitting and looking at it, he fell asleep and had a dream. He heard a voice in his dream.
“Archie!” it said, and then again, “Archie!” It was the voice of his wife, Colin’s mother.
“Lilias!” he answered, “Lilias! Where are you?”
“In the garden,” was the answer. “In the garden!”
And then the dream ended and he woke up. At breakfast the next day he made a decision.
“I’m going to go back to Misselthwaite.”
When Mr. Craven arrived home, he asked Mrs. Medlock to come to the library. He wanted to speak to her.
“How is Master Colin, Medlock?” he asked.
“Well, sir,” Mrs. Medlock answered. “He suddenly wanted to go out in the garden every day with Mary. Now Dickon pushes his wheelchair (轮椅) and he stays there all day long.”
Mr. Craven looked shocked.
“In the garden!” he said.
When Mrs. Medlock left, he got up and went out of the house. He walked across the lawn to the long path near the walled gardens. He knew where the door of the secret garden was, but he didn’t know where the key was. Then he heard some sounds. They were coming from inside the garden. They were the sounds of children running and laughing.
But how? The door was locked and the key was lost.
Suddenly the door in the wall opened and a boy ran out. He almost ran into him. Mr. Craven stared at him in surprise. He was a tall, good-looking boy with grey eyes.
“Who-? What-? Who-?” Mr Craven stammered (结结巴巴地说).
“Father,” the boy said. “It’s me, Colin.”
He put his hand on his father’s arm.
“Father I’m not going to die. I’m going to live forever and ever!”
Mr. Craven put his hands on Colin’s shoulders.
“Take me into the garden, my boy,” he said. “And tell me all about it.”
The children took him through the door. It was autumn now and the garden was full of gold and brown and red. Mr. Craven couldn’t believe his eyes.
“I thought it was dead,” he said. “We did, too,” said Colin. “But it came alive.”
Then they sat down under a tree and Colin told his father about Mary, Dickon, the garden and the magic.

CRISPR is a gene-editing (基因编辑) technology that greatly influences the world. Gene-editing means replacing (代替) a part of the DNA with a specially designed CRISPR molecule (分子).
Application (应用) of CRISPR
CRISPR is already widely used for research. In fact, some people might have the chance to try CRISPR food as early as 2026. Genius, a UK company, has edited the genes of hundreds of pigs to make the pigs safe from a virus (病毒). After their genes are edited, young pigs will grow stronger and faster, and it will be less possible for them to get diseases like pneumonia (肺炎). Besides, researchers at North Carolina State University, US, found that CRISPR-edited trees can greatly reduce the use of energy and water in the process (过程) of paper making.
Advantages and opportunities (机会)
CRISPR is cheap and easy compared to other ways to edit genomes (基因组). There were similar ways before the technology, but they often took years and cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. In the future, CRISPR technology might change the medicine industry and prevent many diseases for human beings. The world’s first CRISPR treatment for sickle cell disease (镰状细胞病) is just the start, soon this gene editing tool could be used to treat a lot of diseases such as cancer, reported New Scientist.
Disadvantages and problems
CRISPR technology can cause safety problems. For example, if CRISPR targets (把……当着目标) a wrong part within the DNA, edits could cause disease. Many countries are now considering how to control these technologies to keep them safe for use. There are also voices of ethical (伦理的) problems when it comes to the editing of human DNA. For example, the US Government Accountability Office raised the following questions: to what extent (程度) should this technology affect future generations (一代代)? Should research on human embryos (胚胎) be allowed?
40. How does the writer tell us CRISPR greatly influences the world?
A. By showing clues. B. By listing numbers.
C. By telling stories. D. By giving examples.
41. What fact does the passage lead you to believe?
A. Now scientists have found ways to control these technologies to keep them safe for use.
B. CRISPR is better than other ways because it spends less time and less money.
C. CRISPR-edited pigs are too strong to get diseases.
D. The writer thinks research on human embryos shouldn’t be allowed.
42. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The development of technology B. CRISPR in use
C. Editing genes for the future D. Two sides of CRISPR

“Father, I’m not going to die.
