B In 1979, Debra Dolan was 21 and on her first solo trip to Vancouver. She was immediately blown away by the city’s beauty. Dolan wanted to keep the joy she felt but she didn’t have time to write in her journal and she had no camera, so she sent her first postcard to herself after she went there. Some 10 days later, Dolan returned home to a pile of postcards from herself. Receiving them, recalls Dolan, was a great joy. She already sensed the postcards would serve as time capsules of a place and a moment. The trip to Vancouver awakened Dolan’s love of travel. She decided exploring the world was her first priority (优先) and went traveling for almost three years. On these adventures in the early 1980s, Dolan kept travel journals, but she also continued her habit of sending postcards to herself. Over 40 years later, Dolan is still a greedy traveler and keen postcard writer. Over the decades, she’s sent hundreds of postcards to herself from trips across the world. Amazingly, they’ve all arrived though sometimes over a year delayed. Dolan’s always enjoyed the process of choosing the postcards as much as she enjoys writing and receiving them. She explains she’s deliberate and considered with her postcard picks. Dolan’s noticed that postcards have a tendency to draw an imagined ideal (理想) of a destination, rather than its reality. That’s one of the reasons why Dolan sometimes chooses introduction cards. Sometimes Dolan will have a predetermined idea of what she wants her chosen postcard to look like, and will hunt around the destination until she finds the perfect realization of her vision. Other times, Dolan comes across the postcards when she least expects it. Today, Dolan is 64 and lives in Vancouver, the city which first awakened her love of travel. She spent her career working in administration, always saving up for her next adventure. 4. What can we learn about Dolan’s postcards? A. The first postcard was sent from Vancouver. B. Dolan has sent herself just a few postcards. C. Many of Dolan’s postcards were lost in the mail. D. Dolan’s postcards took the place of travel journals. 5. What might Dolan think of when she goes through the postcards? A. Fond memories of her travels. B. The meaning of traveling alone. C. Known content for her eyes only. D. The pressure to explore the world. 6. What is Dolan’s attitude to travel? A. Abnormal. B. Conservative. C. Enthusiastic. D. Dissatisfactory. 7. What is the best title for the text? A The Beauty on Postcards B. A Great Collection of Postcards C. A Hobby of Collecting Postcards D. A Traveler Sending Herself Postcards C Parents researching K-12 schools for their children may come across the term “progressive education”. While schools may vary in how they define this approach, progressive schools aim to engage students “as active participants in their learning and in society”. Whether public or private, these schools generally offer a project-based course with an emphasis on students’ agency in their learning. Progressive education is rooted in the ideas of early 20th-century education reformers like John Dewey. He called for an approach where children were placed at the center of their own learning, and believed education should be active and hands-on; that students should be thinking, doing and experimenting instead of sitting quietly and memorizing. Now known as “the father of progressive education”, Dewey’s vision continues to influence schools across the country today. With students empowered to take so much responsibility for their learning, a progressive classroom is likely to look different from a traditional one. Children solving problems together may create a louder environment than a room where they are listening to a teacher lecture. Projects are often immersive, cooperative and multidisciplinary. For example, kindergarten students do an annual project on maple syrup (枫糖) that combines science by looking at weather patterns and trees, social studies and history by learning about the local traditions of sugaring, and literacy (读写) as students read about the process and stories behind it. Each year, the approach to teaching the unit is also shaped by the interests of a particular class. Experts say that progressive schools can work well for almost any child since the model is so focused on the development of each individual student and even shy children can also succeed. Social-emotional learning is as important as academics in a progressive classroom. However, it requires teachers to have a lot of skills, as they should know each student as a “whole person” — including their cultures, their families and their strengths — to engage them in learning. 8. What do progressive schools have in common? A. Their form of ownership. B. Their education objective. C. Their course-based teaching. D. Their definition of progressive education. 9. What are students supposed to do in progressive classrooms? A. They should take the teacher as the center in class. B. They should strictly observe the classroom disciplines. C They should play the main role in their learning processes. D. They should remember as much of the textbook as possible. 10. What does the underlined word “multidisciplinary” in Paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Including two or more fields of study. B. Combining media of communication. C. Relating to or including several cultures. D. Using or knowing more than one language. 11. What does progressive education require from teachers? A. Giving a lot of direct instruction to students. B. Having a thorough awareness of each student. C. Meeting the different requirements of each student. D. Explaining the knowledge as detailedly as possible. D A study finds that creative people are more likely to productively use idle (空闲的) time by letting one idea lead to another. The study participants who were more creative felt less bored when they sat alone in a room. History is filled with stories of famous scientists, artists and philosophers who enjoyed being alone with their thoughts, and those people often came up with some of their best ideas during idle time. In psychology and medicine, most studies on human thoughts either prompt (提示) participants to think in a certain way or ask them to report on thoughts they experienced, but less is known about how thoughts naturally arise and unfold over time in unprompted contexts. This is where the study came in. The researchers divided the study into two parts. For the first experiment, the researchers asked each participant to sit alone in a room for 10 minutes without any access to digital devices. In the absence of any particular prompt, the participants were asked to voice their thoughts aloud in real time. The recorded files from 81 participants were then transcribed and analyzed Researchers found that while many participants tended to jump between seemingly unrelated thoughts, creative individuals showed signs of thinking more associatively and they were more engaged in their thoughts when they were left alone without distractions, such as cell phones and Internet. To complement (补充) their initial findings, the researchers extended their study in the context of a much larger time, the COVID-19 pandemic, when many people were alone with their thoughts more often. For the second experiment, over 2,600 adults answered questions through a smartphone app. Participants who self-identified as being creative reported being less bored during the pandemic. “As we become more overworked, over-planned and addicted to our digital devices, I think we need to do a better job in our homes, our workplaces and our schools to spare time to simply relax with our thoughts,” Andrews Hanna, a researcher, said. “Understanding why different people think the way they do may lead to promising intervention (干预) to improve health and well-being.” 12. What did the study focus on? A. How thoughts naturally come into being. B. What people mainly think of in spare time. C Whether people can control their thoughts. D. When people offer their thoughts to the public. 13. What advantage do creative people have in thinking? A. They feel more bored when they stay alone. B. They tend to share their thoughts with others. C. They think more associatively and focusedly. D. They always jump between unrelated thoughts. 14. What does Andrews Hanna advise us to do with our life? A. Change a job closer to our homes and families. B. Become far more overworked and over-planned. C. Relax ourselves by thinking when overtired. D. Be used to our digital devices and smartphone apps. 15. What does the text mainly talk about? A. A study about the ways people think are controlled. B. A study on how people’s thoughts are fully reported. C. A study about why people should voice their thoughts. D. A study on why creative people can best use idle time. World Oceans Day World Oceans Day on 8 June every year is a special day for learning about oceans, why they’re in danger and how important it is to protect them. My mother, father and two younger sisters, along with my sixty-seven-year-old Grandma Betty and myself, finally arrived at the holy grail (圣杯) of all amusement parks, and we girls were beside ourselves with expectation. To be honest, I thought my grandma was, too. She hadn’t traveled much in her life and certainly had never been anywhere as exciting as Disney World! After the second ride, we all got off and got ready to change to the next one when one of us looked around and noticed that Grandma Betty wasn’t with us. This was alarming for many reasons, the most important being that Grandma Betty had limited vision and couldn’t read signs well. She had also started to show some signs of confusion. She could easily find herself lost in her own hometown, not to mention “The Most Magical Place on Earth”! We looked everywhere for her but couldn’t see her, and obviously she could not see or hear us. Cellphones didn’t exist at that time, so there was no help there. Anyone who has been to Disney knows how crowded and busy the park is. It’s pretty easy for a child to get lost in there, but we didn’t think it would be that easy to misplace a grandma! My mother told us stay in that spot while she went to the “Missing Children” station to report her lost mother. We impatiently waited until she came back and said that she had given them a description, so we might as well move to the next destination. As the day came to an end, we struggled to Disney’s town square, hoping we might find her there while watching the Electrical Parade (游行), the beautiful parade of lights, music and Disney characters. I was sitting on the ground and watching the moving parade. Along came Mickey Mouse! And then Minnie Mouse! And then Daffy Duck and Cinderella! And then along came Grandma Betty! _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ We asked her why she was in the parade. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 绝密★启用前 湘豫名校联考 2023—2024学年高二(上)10月阶段性考试 英 语 考生注意: 1. 1. First of all, it carries forward the excellent Chinese culture and strengthens our cultural confidence. Secondly, it can bring us a lot of life inspiration and philosophy. For example, facing difficulties, we will think of Lu You’s “After endless mountains and rivers that leave doubt whether there is a path out, suddenly one encounters the shade of a willow, bright flowers and a lovely village.” Finally, the accumulation of poetry will give others a good impression. All things considered, Chinese classical poetry is still worth learning. And then along came Grandma Betty! There she was in the middle of the Disney parade, literally marching in all her glory, keeping beat with the band. She was nodding and waving at the crowd, looking pleased with herself! I called out to my mom and pointed toward Grandma. My mom rushed into the middle of the parade group and caught my grandma’s arm. Grandma looked over, somewhat surprised to see a familiar face, and walked out of the line of Disney characters. We asked her why she was in the parade. “A parade?” she was surprised. She didn’t know that she was in a parade! When she saw the crowd of people all headed in one direction, she figured that if she walked with them, she could possibly find all of us! Everyone was waving at her, so she waved back, thinking people here were certainly friendly! She didn’t know she was one of the rare few who got to participate in that world-famous Disney parade, perhaps having the most magical time of us all!
