Very few people will challenge you if you say that the world seems to be changing faster and faster. Of course, some people will. They will mention how change has occurred throughout history. We may be on an up cycle right now, but things will slow down again, as they have over and over for thousands of years. But I don’t think most people — even those who agree that change is coming faster — really appreciate the consequences of the high speed of that change.
The speed of everything is going up and up. And this is now demanding that we run organizations in a different way. However, the number of public or private firms who are trying to adopt new ways is very small. Why should this be so? I think the answer lies in the fact we believe. For the most part, it is highly influenced by our own personal experiences. And when it comes to change, the world we see today and the world we saw two or three or four months ago are rarely very different. Indeed our experiences can be literally 99.5% the same. We get up, get ready for work, and get on the subway, not paying attention to the depth of the seawall (海堤), because it doesn’t affect us today.
So even if we know that things are changing and changing faster, what we see and feel is very different. And our experiences, and the feelings that we get from them, are very influential in determining our behavior. So if we don’t feel things are changing that much, we won’t actively and aggressively (有冲劲地) look for new ways to adapt to that change. It’s really that simple. And increasingly, it’s really that dangerous.
The way we absorb information, and the way we act on it, are not going to change because the structure of our brains or bodies will not suddenly change. The latter only happens over very long periods of time. What can help? Big ideas that produce big light bulbs over our heads can help. A constant focus on change — opportunities and risks — can help. A sense of urgency (紧迫) to find and use new opportunities might help.
4. What is most people’s attitude towards the changing world in the author’s opinion?
A. Negative. B. Objective. C. Indifferent. D. Appreciative.
5. Why do only a few firms try to operate new ways?
A. Most firms are cautious about choosing a right way.
B. Most firms consider the world always the same.
C. Most firms feel very few changes in daily life.
D. Most firms prefer more efficient old ways.
6. Which order can show the CORRECT relationship among experiences, feelings and actions?
A. Feelings→actions→experiences. B. Actions→feelings→experiences.
C. Experiences→actions→feelings. D. Experiences→feelings→actions.
7. What’s the purpose of the text?
A. To remind people of the dangers of the changes.
B. To urge people to adapt to the changing world.
C. To inform people of the world’s new changes.
D. To praise the great changes in the world.
A 5. C 6. D 7. B
根据第一段最后一句“But I don’t think most people — even those who agree that change is coming faster — really appreciate the consequences of the high speed of that change.(但是,我认为大多数人——即使那些同意变化正在加速发生的人——也未必真正理解这种高速变化所带来的后果)”可推知,作者认为大多数人对世界不断发展变化带来的后果持消极态度。故选A。
根据第二段中“I think the answer lies in the fact we believe. For the most part, it is highly influenced by our own personal experiences. And when it comes to change, the world we see today and the world we saw two or three or four months ago are rarely very different. Indeed our experiences can be literally 99.5% the same. We get up, get ready for work, and get on the subway, not paying attention to the depth of the seawall (海堤), because it doesn’t affect us today.(我认为答案在于我们所相信的事物。在很大程度上,它受到我们个人经历的影响。而谈到变化,我们今天看到的世界与两三个月前看到的世界很少有显著的不同。实际上,我们的经历可能有99.5%是相同的。我们起床、准备上班、乘坐地铁,不会注意到海堤的深度,因为它对我们今天没有影响)”可推知,很少有企业采用新的运营方式,是因为在日常生活中多数企业很少能切实感受到世界正在发生变化。故选C。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“So even if we know that things are changing and changing faster, what we see and feel is very different. And our experiences, and the feelings that we get from them, are very influential in determining our behavior.(因此,即使我们知道事情正在发生变化,并且变化的速度在加快,但我们所见所感却截然不同。我们的经历以及从中获得的感受在决定我们的行为方面起着非常重要的作用)”可知,我们的经历影响我们的感受,而这些感受又决定了我们的行为。因此,正确的顺序是:Experiences→Feelings→Actions。故选D。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据全文内容及最后一段“The way we absorb information, and the way we act on it, are not going to change because the structure of our brains or bodies will not suddenly change. The latter only happens over very long periods of time. What can help? Big ideas that produce big light bulbs over our heads can help. A constant focus on change — opportunities and risks — can help. A sense of urgency (紧迫) to find and use new opportunities might help.(我们吸收信息的方式以及我们据此采取行动的方式不会因为我们的大脑或身体结构突然改变而改变。后者的变化需要非常长的时间。那么什么能帮助我们呢?能够让我们灵光一闪的大想法可以有所帮助。持续关注变化——包括机会和风险——也可以有所帮助。对于寻找和利用新机会的紧迫感或许也能有所帮助)”可知,文章最后提出了如何适应变化的方法,因此文章的目的是敦促人们适应不断变化的世界。故选B。
C
The over 48,000 orange trees in Seville, Spain, not only fill the city’s air with the pleasant smell of orange blossoms in spring, but they also produce over 16,500 tons of fruit every winter. Though that makes the capital of southern Spain’s Andalusia region Europe’s top orange-producing city, the fruit is too sour to be consumed fresh. While some of the produce is used to make orange jam and an alcoholic drink, most of it ends up in Seville’s landfills (填埋场). However, that may change soon thanks to a clever idea to use the oranges to produce clean energy.
The trial programme is being launched by the city’s council and park department in cooperation with Emasesa, Seville’s water supply and sanitation (卫生) division. Juice from 38.6 tons of oranges will be left to ferment (发酵) in a specialised facility. The methane (甲烷) released from the fermented liquid will be captured and used to drive a generator to produce clean power. The officials estimate the test run will produce about 1,500 kWh of energy – enough to run one of Emasesa’s water purification plants. To ensure there is no waste, the orange skins, peels, and flesh will be used as fertiliser.
“It’s not just about saving money. The oranges are a problem for the city, and we’re producing added value from waste,” said Benigno Lopez, head of Emasesa’s environmental department.
If successful, by 2023, the city hopes to recycle all the oranges and add the electricity produced back into its power transmission network. In trial runs, one ton of oranges produced 50 kWh of clean energy – enough to cover the daily electricity needs of five homes. The project team estimates that if all the fruit is recycled, it will produce enough energy to power as many as 73,000 residences.
“This project will help us to reach our targets for reducing emissions, energy self-sufficiency, and the circular economy,” Juan Espadas Cejas, mayor of Seville, said in the press conference announcing the trial scheme.
8. What do we know about oranges in Seville?
A. They are usually picked in spring.
B. They are not recommended to be eaten fresh.
C. They are mostly used to make jams and juice.
D. They make Seville the world’s top orange-producing city.
9. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A. Different uses of Seville oranges.
B. Ways to produce power from juice.
C. An introduction to the trial programme.
D. Reasons for launching the trial programme.
10. What can we infer from the passage?
A. The energy produced will be used to purify water.
B. Seville hasn’t carried out the trial programme yet.
C. The electricity produced will go to Seville’s power plants.
D. 14,600 tons of recycled oranges are needed to power 73,000 homes.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Seville Is Developing New Energy B. Seville Is Turning Waste into Wealth
C. Seville Is Seeking Market for Oranges D. Seville Is Contributing to Energy Saving
B 9. C 10. D 11. B
根据第一段“Though that makes the capital of southern Spain’s Andalusia region Europe’s top orange-producing city, the fruit is too sour to be consumed fresh.(虽然这使得西班牙南部安达卢西亚地区的首府成为欧洲最大的柑橘生产城市,但这种水果太酸了,不能新鲜食用。)”
根据第二段“Juice from 38.6 tons of oranges will be left to ferment (发酵) in a specialised facility. The methane (甲烷) released from the fermented liquid will be captured and used to drive a generator to produce clean power. The officials estimate the test run will produce about 1,500 kWh of energy – enough to run one of Emasesa’s water purification plants. To ensure there is no waste, the orange skins, peels, and flesh will be used as fertiliser.(来自38.6吨橘子中的果汁将留在专门的设施中发酵。从发酵液中释放出来的甲烷将被捕获并用于驱动发电机产生清洁能源。官员们估计,试运行将产生约1500千瓦时的能量,足以运行Emasesa的一家净水工厂。为了确保没有浪费,橘子皮、果皮和果肉将用作肥料。)” 可知,本段简要介绍了这一试验方案。故选C项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“In trial runs, one ton of oranges produced 50 kWh of clean energy – enough to cover the daily electricity needs of five homes. The project team estimates that if all the fruit is recycled, it will produce enough energy to power as many as 73,000 residences.(在试运行中,一吨橘子产生50千瓦时的清洁能源,足以满足五户家庭的日常用电需求。该项目团队估计,如果所有水果都被回收利用,它将产生足够的能量为多达73000户居民供电。)” 可知,一吨橘子产生的清洁能源足够为五户家庭提供电能,那么73,000户家庭则需要14,600吨橘子。故选D项。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“However, that may change soon thanks to a clever idea to use the oranges to produce clean energy.(然而,这可能很快就会改变,这要归功于一个聪明的想法,即利用橘子生产清洁能源。)”
D
Gwen Ifill was a famous African-American journalist who fought for social justice through her news stories. After she died in 2016, a student award was set up in her honor.
Ana Rodriguez, a 16-year-old student at Archie Williams High School, won the 2021 Gwen Ifill High School Student of the Year Award. She won due to her real passion for fighting fake news about COVID-19 vaccines, medical studies and other social media dramas.
Rodriguez said that fake news these days is often masked as real news, meaning teenagers and adults need to cultivate a certain type of skepticism before they either react to the news or spread it. “You need to double-check the sources and get a second opinion,” she said, “If you read about vaccines having some kind of aftermath, go and check another website.”
Archie Williams High School English teacher Matthew Leffel nominated (提名) Rodriguez for the award because of her enthusiasm and “purposefulness”. “Ana went very deep with her research,” Leffel said. “She was able to demonstrate the kind of media literacy (媒介素养) skills that we had intended to build.”
The project used a free public fact-checking website called Checkology. Students were required to write an argument on their chosen topic. Then they had to produce a podcast on “The Truth About …”. In Rodriguez’s case, for example, it was “The Truth About Scientific Racism”. Rodriguez also worked on several different topics, including the fake information of COVID-19 vaccines.
She and other students also made their arguments into booklets to hand out. They hoped to educate more people. Some of their other topics included 5G towers, climate change and surveillance (监控) technology.
“Ana was purposeful,” Leffel said. “It was clear she was not just doing it as a class assignment, but as something that had an important meaning for her life.”
12. What does the underlined word “skepticism” probably mean?
A. Doubt. B. Interest. C. Curiosity. D. Concern.
13. Ana Rodriguez was awarded the 2021 Gwen Ifill High School Student of the Year Award because of ________.
A. her contribution to medical studies.
B. a campaign she started to fight disinformation
C. her excellent performance in her research project.
D. a free public fact-taking website she established.
14. What does Rodriguez think we should do before we spread a news item?
A. Consult our friends or parents about it. B. Check other sources to see if it’s real.
C. Rewrite it based on our own interpretation. D. Leave some comments on it.
15. Which of the following best describes Rodriguez ?
A. Honest and open-minded. B. Harding and modest.
C. Friendly and helpful. D. Devoted and socially responsible.
A 13. C 14. B 15. D
根据划线词上文“Rodriguez said that fake news these days is often masked as real news(罗德里格斯说,如今的假新闻往往被伪装成真实的新闻)”及下文“You need to double-check the sources and get a second opinion(你需要再检查一遍资料来源,再征求别人的意见)”以及“If you read about vaccines having some kind of aftermath, go and check another website(如果你读到疫苗有某种后果,去另一个网站看看)”可知,对于资料内容,需要检查来源并与其他结果进行对比,以确定新闻的真实性。 故选A。
根据第三段““Ana went very deep with her research,” Leffel said. “She was able to demonstrate the kind of media literacy (媒介素养) skills that we had intended to build.”(“安娜对她的研究非常深入,”莱菲尔说。“她能够展示出我们想要培养的那种媒体素养。”)”可知,由于她在研究项目中的出色表现,安娜·罗德里格斯被授予2021年格温·伊菲尔高中年度学生奖。故选C。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Rodriguez said that fake news these days is often masked as real news, meaning teenagers and adults need to cultivate a certain type of skepticism before they either react to the news or spread it. “You need to double-check the sources and get a second opinion,” she said, “If you read about vaccines having some kind of aftermath, go and check another website.”(罗德里格斯说,现在假新闻经常被伪装成真实的新闻,这意味着青少年和成年人在对新闻做出反应或传播新闻之前需要培养某种类型的怀疑态度。她说:“你需要仔细检查消息来源,并获得第二种意见。如果你读到有关疫苗有某种后果的报道,那就去另一个网站看看。”)”可知,罗德里格斯认为我们在传播新闻之前应该查看其他消息来源,看看是不是真的。故选B。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“She won due to her real passion for fighting fake news about COVID-19 vaccines, medical studies and other social media dramas.(她获胜是因为她对打击关于COVID-19疫苗、医学研究和其他社交媒体戏剧的假新闻的真正热情)”以及倒数第二段“She and other students also made their arguments into booklets to hand out. They hoped to educate more people. Some of their other topics included 5G towers, climate change and surveillance (监控) technology.(她和其他学生还将他们的观点制作成小册子分发。他们希望教育更多的人。他们的其他一些话题包括5G发射塔、气候变化和监测技术)”可知,罗德里格斯有奉献精神和社会责任感。故选D。

Tips to Create Great Readers
Are great readers born or are they made? Obviously, children don’t enter the world knowing how to understand a text or make a prediction.____16____Here are some tips for making children great readers by habit.
____17____The most critical moment in reading instruction is when children get something wrong. If the child continues practising the skill incorrectly, he or she will build weaker habits. Intervene (干预) with a targeted question, such as “How does this part of the text help you understand this character?” Doing so can prevent poor habits from taking root and build great ones in their place.
Build habits at the moment of writing. Just like adults, children use writing to gather their thoughts about a text and communicate their ideas to others.____18____For example, children can first have a discussion about what they’re reading by answering a focus question in writing: “What is the author trying to teach us in this story?”____19____By doing this, you can get a better understanding of what guidance the children will need during the discussion.
Build habits at the moment of reading. Independent reading time is important for any reading programme. It’s a chance for children to put together everything they’ve learnt in reading lessons and fly using their own wings.____20____So providing a rich class library and letting children know that they are expected to read for the entire period will ensure their success as lifelong independent readers.
A. Build habits at the moment of error.
B. Make sure children fall in love with reading.
C. Then, you can review their written responses.
D. They grow into great readers by learning great habits.
E. But it only works if they really do spend that time reading.
F. Specific lines or phrases from the text help to reveal that information.
G. Therefore, you can develop their writing and reading skills at the same time.
D 17. A 18. G 19. C 20. E
根据上文“Are great readers born or are they made? Obviously, children don’t enter the world knowing how to understand a text or make a prediction. (伟大的阅读者是天生的还是培养出来的?显然,孩子们进入这个世界时并不知道如何理解文本或做出推断)”和下文“Here are some tips for making children great readers by habit. (这里有一些建议,可以让孩子们养成良好的习惯)”可知,伟大的阅读者不是天生的,而是通过习惯培养而成的。D项“They grow into great readers by learning great habits.(他们通过学习伟大的习惯而成长为伟大的读者)”切题,they指代上文提到的children。
再根据下文“The most critical moment in reading instruction is when children get something wrong. If the child continues practising the skill incorrectly, he or she will build weaker habits. Intervene (干预) with a targeted question, such as “How does this part of the text help you understand this character?” Doing so can prevent poor habits from taking root and build great ones in their place. (阅读教学中最关键的时刻是孩子们做错了什么。如果孩子继续错误地练习技能,他或她会养成更弱的习惯。用一个有针对性的问题进行干预,比如“文本的这一部分如何帮助你理解这个角色?”这样做可以防止不良习惯扎根,并在它们的位置上建立良好的习惯)可知,要在孩子出错时引导他/她养成正确的习惯。A项“Build habits at the moment of error. (在出差错的时候养成习惯)”切题,该项中的the moment of error与下文中的something wrong相吻合,故选A。
根据上文“Just like adults, children use writing to gather their thoughts about a text and communicate their ideas to others (就像成年人一样,学生们用写作来收集他们对文本的想法,并将他们的想法传达给其他人)”可知,学生用写作表达自己对文本的理解,并将想法传达给别人。 G项“Therefore, you can develop their writing and reading skills at the same time. (因此,你可以同时发展他们的写作和阅读技巧)”切题,由Therefore可知前后是一种因果关系,故选G。
【19题详解】
根据上文“For example, children can first have a discussion about what they’re reading by answering a focus question in writing:“What is the author trying to teach us in this story?” (例如,孩子们可以首先通过书面回答一个焦点问题来讨论他们正在阅读的内容:“作者在这个故事中试图教我们什么?”)”中的first推知,空处应陈述接下来该怎么做。C项“Then, you can review their written responses. (然后,你可以回顾他们的书面回复)”切题,then呼应上文的first。故选C。
【20题详解】
根据上文“Independent reading time is important for any reading programme. It’s a chance for children to put together everything they’ve learnt in reading lessons and fly using their own wings. (独立阅读时间对任何阅读计划都很重要。这是一个机会,让孩子们把他们在阅读课上学到的一切汇集在一起,用自己的翅膀飞翔)”可知,只有当孩子花时间独立阅读时,才会真正地形成阅读习惯。E项“But it only works if they really do spend that time reading. (但只有当他们真的花时间阅读时才会起作用)”切题。故选E。

Tips to Create Great Readers
Are great readers born or are they made? Obviously children don’t enter the world knowing how to understand a text or make a prediction.____16____Here are some tips for making children great readers by habit.
