B When her quadriplegic (四肢瘫痪的) son decided to get his MBA, Judy O’Connor attended every class with him to help him write and take part in classroom activities, so when her son, Marty O’Connor, graduated, he planned a surprise to thank her. On graduation day at Chapman University, little did Judy know she’d soon be the center of attention. When Marty’s name was called, his mom helped wheel him to the front, took a picture with Marty as he received his diploma and then over the loudspeaker, a voice made an announcement (宣布): The university was giving Judy an honorary MBA. “I cannot believe it. I’m proud of my son and touched to be honored,” said Judy with happy tears. To Marty, there was no doubt his mom, a retired elementary school teacher with a business degree, deserved (应得) to get her honorary MBA. Every day, Judy would sit by Marty in class, taking notes, raising her hand so he could answer questions, and silently filling in his answers on test days. Perhaps just as important, Judy gave Marty courage. At first, Marty wasn’t sure how the classroom would go for him. “But after a little while we found that by working together we could achieve a great deal,” Marty says. Over the past two years, the mother and the son had joked that Judy was putting in enough work to get her own degree. So during a meeting with the university president, Marty asked if his mother could get an honorary MBA. The president was totally on board and the school members even kept their plan very dark to make it a surprise. Marty encourages anyone in a similar situation to his to keep up hope.“Just keep an open mind, and you can start to see your difficulties as a chance to grow in your life,” he says. 24. It is ridiculous but it happens. 26-year-old Anna Cherdantseva, from the city of Ufa, is a full-time sofa tester, spending up to 10 hours every day trying out new sofas for comfort and safety. Last month, Russian furniture giant MZ5 Group announced that it was taking application for a new position—full time sofa tester. Although all new products are tested in a specialized laboratory, management decided that in order to better meet the needs of consumers it needed some feedback on real-life use of its sofas. In just a few days, MZ5 received over 5,000 job applications from people eager to spend most of their time sitting and lying on sofas. “We were selecting candidates in several stages,” MZ5 Group spokesperson Anastasia Russkih said, “Initially we checked their resumes (简历), and then we let them tell us why they wanted the job.” Eventually, the furniture company shortlisted just 7 candidates, among whom Anna Cherdantseva, a 26-year-old marketing expert, proved to be the most suitable for the job. “I felt extreme competition, and it was a real fight for my dream job,” Anna said after getting selected. “I have a lot of ideas for improving the sofas, but I would prefer not to talk about them for now. I believe it will all work out between me and the sofas.” Despite describing herself as an active person, Cherdantseva says that spending about 10 hours a day sitting on sofas doesn’t sound bad at all. “Of course I will spend a lot of time on new sofas. The more time I spend on them, the better it will be for my work,” she told reporters. Anna Cherdantseva is currently on a three month probation (试用期) at MZ5, but the company claims that as long as she proves to be up to the task, they plan to offer her a permanent (长期的) position as a sofa tester. The young woman will receive a monthly salary of 56, 000 rubles ($1,000) for the first three months. It’s not so bad about the job. 28. Why did MZ5 Group want a sofa tester? A. Because it wants to satisfy its consumers better. B. Because it wants to save money by doing that. C. Because Anna Cherdantseva applied for the job. D. Because its products need to be tested. 29. What does the underlined word “feedback” in Paragraph 2 mean? A. Products. B. Consumers. C. Praise. D. Response. 30. What does Anna Cherdantseva think of getting the job? A. It was very easy. B. It was challenging. C. It was equal. D. It was interesting. 31. What can be inferred from the text? A. The company found it difficult to find suitable employees. B. Anna Cherdantseva has the chance to work steadily for MZ5. C. The company doesn’t give Anna Cherdantseva a good salary now. D. Anna Cherdantseva got the job because of her similar work experience. D People are less likely to yawn (打哈欠) when others do as they get older, a study has found. Contagious (传染的) yawning is related more closely to a person’s age than tiredness and energy levels, US-based scientists said. Researchers are now looking at whether to catch yawns from other people is a born ability, with the hope of helping treat some mental health disorders. People with some mental illnesses are reportedly less able to catch yawns researchers said, so understanding the genes that are connected with contagious yawning could open new paths for treatment. In the study, published in the journal Plos One, 328 participants were shown a three-minute video showing other people yawning. Each participant had to click a button every time they yawned. Overall, 68 percent of the participants yawned. Of those, 82 percent of people aged under 25 yawned, compared with 60 percent of people aged between 25 and 49, and 41 percent of people aged over 50. Dr Elizabeth Cirulli, assistant professor of medicine at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, led the study. She said, “This is the first study to look at a large number of factors. It is the largest study, when it comes to the number of people participating, till now.” She said she did not know why contagious yawning reduced with age. Dr Cirulli added that although age was the most important predictor(预测器) of contagious yawning, only 8% of the change in whether or not a participant yawned was explained by their age.“Most of change in the contagious yawning reaction was just not explained,” said Dr Cirulli. Robert R Provine, professor of psychology at the University of Maryland in Baltimore County, said the study was “special” as it was the first time a link between ageing and contagious yawning had been shown. Prof Provine said the findings could help to understand why laughing and coughing were so contagious. He added, “Contagious acts such as yawning and laughing remind us that we are often mindless to control our behaviour.” 32. Why do the researchers carry out studies on yawning? A. To stop yawning from spreading. B. To find out yawning is a born activity. C. To deal with some mental illnesses. D. To help prevent people from yawning. 33. What can we learn from the study on yawning? A. The study lasted for 3 minutes. B. Age has the most important influence on contagious yawning. C. People with mental disease are more likely to yawn when others do. D. A 15-year-old boy is more likely to yawn than a 50-year-old man. 34. Which of the following is Professor Provine’s opinion? A. The study is so far the largest one as for the number of people participating. B. Aging and contagious yawning are closely related. C. People are often influenced by contagious acts without knowing it. D. Factors besides age also have an effect on contagious yawning. 35. What is the best title of the passage? A. New paths for treatment of mental disorders. B. Ageing and contagious yawning. C. Influences of contagious yawning on people. D. So, what are you waiting for? When do you plan to tell her? M: Well, she is at work at the moment. She doesn’t finish until 5. I’ll have to wait until tonight now, I suppose. W: Well, I was posted there before, back in 2008. It’s OK—a bit like England really. At least the weather is similar, and the people aren’t much different. The only thing I didn’t like is the food, especially the sausages. What do you intend to do about the family? Are you going to take them with you? M: Well, I’d like to, but I don’t know much about the situation at the moment… you know, about schools and all that. But I hope to move the family out there in a couple of months’ time. I don’t think I want to spend a year and a half out there on my own… I mean, without Rachel and the kids. I mean, I don’t see that much of them now as it is. W: Yeah. Well, that’s the way it is normally in our company, I suppose. M: Yeah. Well, we’ll see. Let me pay for the coffee. W: No, no. I’ll pay. 17. Over the past two years, the mother and the son had joked that Judy was putting in enough work to get her own degree. So during a meeting with the university president, Marty asked if his mother could get an honorary MBA. The president was totally on board and the school members even kept their plan very dark to make it a surprise. It is ridiculous, but it happens. A 29. D 30. B 31. 根据第二段“Although all new products are tested in a specialized laboratory, management decided that in order to better meet the needs of consumers it needed some  feedback   on real-life use of its sofas. (尽管所有新产品都在专门的实验室进行测试,但管理层决定,为了更好地满足消费者的需求,它需要一些关于沙发实际使用情况的反馈)”可知,MZ5集团想要进行沙发测试,是为了更好地满足消费者的需求。故选A。 根据倒数第二段“I felt extreme competition, and it was a real fight for my dream job(我感受到了激烈的竞争,这是一场为我梦想的工作而进行的真正的战斗)”可知,在她看来,得到这份工作是有挑战性的。 根据最后一段“Anna Cherdantseva is currently on a three month probation (试用期) at MZ5, but the company claims that as long as she proves to be up to the task, they plan to offer her a permanent (长期的) position as a sofa tester.(安娜·切尔丹瑟娃目前在MZ5公司有三个月的试用期,但该公司声称,只要她能胜任这项任务,他们就计划给她提供一个沙发测试员的永久职位)”可知,她有机会进入该公司工作。故选B。 D People are less likely to yawn (打哈欠) when others do as they get older, a study has found. Contagious (传染的) yawning is related more closely to a person’s age than tiredness and energy levels, US-based scientists said. Researchers are now looking at whether to catch yawns from other people is a born ability, with the hope of helping treat some mental health disorders. People with some mental illnesses are reportedly less able to catch yawns, researchers said, so understanding the genes that are connected with contagious yawning could open new paths for treatment. D. Opinions of professors on contagious yawning. C 33. D 34. Contagious (传染的) yawning is related more closely to a person’s age than tiredness and energy levels, US-based scientists said.(一项研究发现,随着年龄的增长,人们打哈欠的可能性会降低。 Does failure really exist? A. discussing讨论;B. shouting叫喊;C. talking交谈;D. pointing指着。根据“How many roses can I get for six dollars?” A. boring无聊的;B. beautiful美丽的;C. important重要的;D. expensive昂贵的。 It was worth the extra 35 dollars just to see that大意是:那是另外额外支付的35美元买的这些花让这个男孩高兴。 A. save节省;B. waste浪费;C. spend花费;D. give给予。根据much time with her可知,表示花费时间陪某人。 A. cheap便宜的;B. special特别的;C. new新的;D. interesting有趣的。 A. favorite最爱;B. dream梦想;C. life生活;D. belief信仰。 故选A。 A. worried着急的;B. touched感动的;C. surprised惊讶的;D. frightened惊恐的。 A. silently沉默地;B. loudly大声地;C. excitedly兴奋地;D. repeatedly重复地。 故选A。 A. sat down坐下;B. turned back转身;C. ran out跑出去;D. gave up放弃。 A. disappointment失望;B. embarrassment尴尬;C. excitement兴奋,快乐;D. amazement惊奇。 A. rule规则;B. word词语;C. story故事;D. note便条。根据telling his mother he loved her. A. follow跟随;B. miss错失,想念;C. remember记住,记得;D. find发现。 He left the shop, and later saw the boy enter a cemetery. 故选A。 A. passed经过;B. stopped停止;C. jumped跳跃;D. rushed冲向。 A. listened to听;B. waited for等候;C. worried about担心;D. saw to确保。 故选A。 A. smiled微笑;B. turned转动;C. cried哭泣;D. continued继续。 A. street街道;B. shop商店;C. home家;D. car小汽车。 He wanted to tell his mother one more time just how much he loved her. “他想再一次告诉妈妈说他有多么爱她。”所以能够表达个人的,自己地只有C选项personally切合。故选C。 第 II 卷 注意事项:用0. 5毫米黑色笔迹的签字笔将答案写在答题卡上。写在本试卷上无效。 第二节 语法填空(共10小题; 每小题1. 5分, 满分15分) 阅读下面材料, 在空白处填入适当的内容 (只需1个单词) 或括号内单词的正确形式。 Hand gestures are an important part of communication, ____61____ (particular) if we are speaking in a foreign language.
