Smith, a Hollywood leading man who admits that he’s far from enjoying outdoor activities, has put himself in danger while filming Welcome to Earth, a Disney original series from National Geographic. He was afraid at that time, but he says “It’s really difficult to enjoy things if you’re scared. I think the ability to see how beautiful things are is directly connected to your openness to them and fear closes you down.” Smith says he was once scared of everything and hated water, but he learns to read the rapids (急流) while whitewater kayaking, rescues turtles near the Great Barrier Reef and goes 3,000 feet below the sea in a deep-water submarine. Dr. Albert Lin, an engineer and explorer who has uncovered lost cities previously for National Geographic, was astonished to find that Smith was able to control his fears even in the face of real danger. While diving in the underground lake in Namibia, Smith got into trouble and Lin watched him “dropping at a rate that felt like maybe we wouldn’t see him again. “But Smith was able to control his mind and deal with the situation. “I respected Will Smith, the actor, before, but now I definitely have grown to truly respect Will Smith, the human being,” says Lin. Produced by famous filmmaker Darren Aronofsky, the series carries on the tradition of National Geographic pushing the exploring envelope (极限) and employing the latest technology to help us understand our world. “I hope this can help people out there get a sense of how absolutely incredible our planet is,” says Lin. The experts Smith has paired with teach him about speed, smell and sound and the colors out there he might miss. “You can’t really want to protect something that you don’t understand. And you can’t want to protect something that you can’t recognize as beautiful,” Smith says. 24. What enables you to enjoy beautiful things according to Smith? A. Respect for nature. B. Spirit of adventure. C. Openness to change. D. Ability to find beauty. 25. What happened to Smith in Namibia? A. He found a lost city. B. He nearly lost his life in a lake. C. He entered a diving competition. D. He went deep under the sea in a submarine. 26. What can be learned about “Welcome to Earth” from paragraph 5? A. It applied advanced technology. B. It targets potential explorers. C. It explains the origin of our planet. D. It won important film awards. 27. Where is the text probably from? A. A diary. B. A guidebook. C. A movie magazine. D. A book review. C Along with a rising number of space missions by government agencies and private industries, comes a fresh set of problems for Earth: potentially dangerous space junk. A recent study published in the scientific journal Nature Astronomy concluded “that current practices have a 10 percent chance of one or more deaths over a decade”. In other words, according to researchers from the University of Victoria and the University of British Columbia, there’s roughly a one-in-ten chance that the next decade will witness falling space junk kill someone. The space junk orbiting the earth is an unfortunate by-product of our desire to explore and document space. According to 2021 figures from NASA and the Department of Defense’s Space Surveillance Data, the agencies were actively tracking more than 27,000 pieces of space junk, most of which are larger than a softball and that casually orbit the planet. While the floating space junk is certainly a problem, not all the objects that went up must come down, and, in fact, a number of pieces simply burn up in the atmosphere. But sometimes those objects, particularly large ones like used rocket attachments, give in to gravity and fall back down to Earth to be dealt with once again by their human makers. Typically, people don’t die or even get injured by this phenomenon — many of the falling pieces crash into the ocean. They also have to deal with the unsettling feeling of knowing that large rocket pieces can just fall from the sky and that it might affect people in certain parts of the world more than others. This poses an obvious safety risk to people on the ground. “When some large parts of space junk return to Earth, the parts of their mass survive the heat of atmosphere. Many of the surviving pieces are potentially dangerous, giving serious risks on land, at sea, and to people in airplanes,” the study explains. 28. What is the conclusion of the study published in Nature Astronomy? A. People will see space junk easily in the future. B. Government agencies and private industries will develop fast. C. Some people may be hit to death by objects from the space. D. There will be a 10 percent chance for human to die in 10 years. 29. What can be inferred from the third paragraph? A. Normally we should not worry about space junk. B. The large space junk will pollute the ocean. C. The floating space junk will come down finally. D. The space junk will get burnt in the sky. 30. What might be discussed in the following part of the text? A. How to find space junk. B. How to deal with space junk. C. How to inform people of the danger. D. How to avoid the danger of space junk. 31. Which is the most suitable title for the text? A. Space Junk Causes Pollution B. How to Take Back Space Junk C. Exploring Space Takes in Unfortunate Results D. Space Junk Puts People at Risk D Today’s amazing newspaper headline! First family of four to walk to the South Pole wearing Mickey Mouse ears and clown’s shoes. No, not really. It isn’t true. I invented it. But I wouldn’t be surprised to see it one day soon. It seems that every week someone becomes ”the first” or “the youngest” or “the oldest” or even “the first married couple” to do something that doesn’t seem to be very useful to the rest of humanity. This year I’ve seen headlines saying “The youngest person to sail the Atlantic alone”, “The youngest Briton to climb Mount Everest”, and “The first people to fly around the world in a hot air balloon”. Why do they do it? Don’t they have better things to do with their time and money? And why should I be interested anyway? Human beings have already climbed the highest mountains, sailed across the oceans and flown around the world. People have already reached the most remote parts of our planet. Many of these things were done a long, long time ago. There just isn’t anything left to explore nowadays. I suppose there’s still a lot of the universe left, and the bottom of the oceans is still a bit of a mystery, but you need a lot of technology to explore areas like that. So, those people who feel the need for adventure can only do things that have been done before. So they have to try and do it in a new way, or be “the fastest” or “the youngest” or “the oldest” to do something that isn’t really new at all. What is so great about climbing Mount Everest these days anyway? It’s become a popular tourist trip. People pay thousands of dollars to be taken up the mountain by the local Sherpas, who lead the way and carry the bags. At any one time there are about a thousand people either climbing up or on their way back down. As a result, Everest is covered with rubbish and the Sherpas have to make special trips up the mountain to pick it up. The climbers are often inexperienced and when they get into trouble other people have to risk their lives to bring them down to safety. Helicopter crews have been killed trying to reach people who were stuck on the mountain. In January 2003 a helicopter carrying two British men crashed into the sea near Antarctica. I’m not quite sure what they were trying to be “the first” or “the youngest” to do. The Chilean navy picked them up after a nine-hour rescue mission that cost tens of thousands of pounds, all paid for by the Chilean and British taxpayers. Talking of taxpayers, many Australians are getting a bit fed up with record breakers. A lot of people trying to break sailing or rowing records get into trouble in the seas around Australia, so the Australian navy has to send ships to save them. There have been a lot of difficult, time-consuming rescue missions in recent years costing the Australian government millions of dollars. I suppose we can’t just leave them to drown, but personally, I think we should give the bill to the people who are rescued. Perhaps they would think twice about doing it if they had to pay for expensive insurance premiums (保费). Then I wouldn’t have to read about them in the newspapers either. 32. The writer invents the newspaper headline in paragraphs 1 & 2 to ________. A. persuade readers of a new trend B. entertain readers with his humor C. get readers interested in the topic D. remind readers of an important event 33. By saying “It’s become a popular tourist trip”, the writer means ________. A. Mount Everest is now covered with a lot of rubbish B. climbing Mount Everest has already lost its true meaning C. it’s impossible to climb up Mountain Everest without help D. people without experience may get in trouble or even danger 34. Which is the reason why many Australians dislike the record breakers? A. They have to pay for the costs of rescuing the record breakers. B. The Australian navy was not something intended for rescue work. C. The record breakers should pay for their insurance premiums themselves. D. A great number of people try to break records in the seas around Australia. 35. Which of the following is the best title of the passage? A. It’s All Been Done Before B. Never Do Something New C. You Are the Next Record Breaker D. Be Responsible for Your Adventures Career coach Angela Copeland encourages job seekers to think beyond the normal barriers or unspoken rules. “It’s always been my philosophy that you have to think outside the box. ____36____ because then no one is going to know who you are,” says Copeland, author of Breaking The Rules & Getting The Job. Room 114 was home to Katherine’s, a woman in her seventies who had stopped talking a few months earlier and had been living in a catatonic (木僵的) state in her wheelchair for the past month. I was told her family had stopped calling or visiting, and she had no friends. When Beau and I walked into her room, she was sitting in her wheelchair, her back toward us, facing the viewless window. Beau was pulling ahead of me with his leash (牵绳). Before I could get around to kneeling down in front of her, he was at her left side, with his head in her lap. I pulled a chair up in front of her and sat down, saying hello. No response. In the fifteen minutes that Beau and I sat with Katherine, she never said a word and never moved. Surprising as that may be, more surprising was that Beau never moved either. If you knew Beau, you’d know that even ten seconds was long enough to wait for a petting. He would wiggle (摇) his body against anyone who was closest to his nose until they were forced to pet him, or he’d lose interest and find someone else. I became so uncomfortable with the lack of life in this woman that, much as I wished I felt differently, when the clock struck 2: 30 PM. , I rushed to say goodbye, stood up and pulled the reluctant (不情愿的) Beau out. Every Monday thereafter, Beau and I made a visit to room 114. Each visit I attempted to ask Katherine questions about her life and tell her about mine and Beau’s. No response. I grew more and more frustrated. I figured we didn’t really make a difference, so why did we bother to stop by? On our fourth visit, I was ready to bypass Katherine’s room, but Beau had other plans. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ And then the most unbelievable thing happened. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 兴文县二中2023年秋期高二开学考试 英语试题 本试卷共8页,满分120分。 What is the final holiday plan of the woman’s family? But he wasn’t making an action movie. It was personal. B. They also have to deal with the unsettling feeling of knowing that large rocket pieces can just fall from the sky and that it might affect people in certain parts of the world more than others This poses an obvious safety risk to people on the ground. A How to find space junk. Space Junk Puts People at Risk 【答案】28. C 29. A 30. B 31. D 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。这篇文章主要讲述了随着政府机构和私营企业进行越来越多的太空任务,地球面临着一个新的问题:潜在的危险太空碎片。一项最近发表在科学期刊《自然天文学》上的研究得出结论,目前的做法在未来十年内有10%的几率造成一人或多人死亡。 【28题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中“In other words, according to researchers from the University of Victoria and the University of British Columbia, there’s roughly a one-in-ten chance that the next decade will witness falling space junk kill someone. (换句话说,根据维多利亚大学和英属哥伦比亚大学的研究人员的研究,在未来十年里,大约有十分之一的机会看到太空垃圾坠落致死。)”可知,有些人可能会被来自太空的物体砸死。故选C。 【29题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段中“While the floating space junk is certainly a problem, not all the objects that went up must come down, and, in fact, a number of pieces simply burn up in the atmosphere. (虽然漂浮的太空垃圾确实是个问题,但并非所有上升的物体都必须下降,事实上,一些碎片只是在大气中燃烧。)”以及“Typically, people don’t die or even get injured by this phenomenon — many of the falling pieces crash into the ocean. (通常情况下,人们不会死于这种现象,甚至不会受伤——许多坠落的碎片会坠入海洋。)”可知,虽然太空漂浮垃圾是个问题,但是很多碎片在大气中燃烧了,或者在通常情况,即使有许多太空垃圾碎片坠落,但都坠入了海洋。故选A。 【30题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段中““When some large parts of space junk return to Earth, the parts of their mass survive the heat of atmosphere. Many of the surviving pieces are potentially dangerous, giving serious risks on land, at sea, and to people in airplanes,” the study explains. 根据文章第一段“Along with a rising number of space missions by government agencies and private industries, comes a fresh set of problems for Earth: potentially dangerous space junk. D。 D Today’s amazing newspaper headline! Be Responsible for Your Adventures 【答案】32. C 33. B 34. A 35. 根据第一段“First family of four to walk to the South Pole wearing Mickey Mouse ears and clown’s shoes. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 On our fourth visit, I was ready to bypass Katherine’s room, but Beau had other plans. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ And then the most unbelievable thing happened. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】范文 On our fourth visit, I was ready to bypass Katherine’s room, but Beau had other plans. He pulled me into Katherine’s room and took his familiar pose on her left side, head in her lap. I didn’t say a word, but since I had a business meeting later in the afternoon with which I was preoccupied, I decided to cut short our usual fifteen minutes with Katherine to five. Instead of talking, I remained quiet, focusing inwardly on my upcoming meeting. Surely, she’d never notice or care. As I stood up to walk out and began to pull Beau away, he wouldn’t move. And then the most unbelievable thing happened. Katherine’s hand went up to the top of Beau’s head and rested there. No other movement, just her hand Beau continued to stand like a statue never moving from his spot. I sat back down in silent shock. Love has many ways of showing its face. Each time I am ready to walk away from a person on whom I’ve given up, I am reminded of the power of Beau’s loving persistence with Katherine and with me. If Beau can give an extra ten minutes, surely, I can too. 词汇激活 行为类 ①全神贯注:be preoccupied with/concentrate on ②注意到:notice/take notice of ③缩短:cut short/shorten 情绪类 ①震惊:in shock/in astonishment ②平静的:quiet/calm 【点睛】【高分句型1】 I didn’t say a word, but since I had a business meeting later in the afternoon with which I was preoccupied, I decided to cut short our usual fifteen minutes with Katherine to five.
