B
Fresh out of college, I had a job as a receptionist at an eyeglasses store, where I encountered both nice and unpleasant customers. Mr. Petrucci and his wife, a lovely elderly couple, would often come in. The woman was extremely sweet, often had questions, and liked to chat. Occasionally, I was so busy that taking the extra time with her was challenging, so I greeted her warmly and asked her to walk around the store at her own pace. In truth, I really liked the couple and imagined how fantastic it would be to have them as neighbors.
One day, Mr. Petrucci came in and walked up to my desk. It was unusual for him to come alone, but that didn’t register with me at first. I greeted him and asked what he needed. He told me that he just came in to see me. When he hesitantly told me that his wife had passed away, I was discouraged. My heart ached for him losing a woman he loved for all his life. Then he handed me a package and said it was a gift for me, a person who deserved it.
Thinking about that moment still brings tears to my eyes. I opened the box, and it contained wonderful, old-fashioned set of Irish-style hankies. I told him how touched I was by his thoughtful gesture. I’ve never seen him since then.
Although it happened forty years ago, I still can picture him standing there telling me something now. I still have one of those meaningful hankies. It always serves as a reminder of how important the smallest of gestures can be to someone. Just as I had no idea that I was making a difference to them, he could never imagine how much his gift meant to me. We touch each other’s lives in ways we often never know about — for good or for ill. The smallest amount of kindness has lasting repercussion. I try to remember that touching moment every day.
24.Why did the elderly man give hankies to the author?
A.To show his generosity and wealth. B.To remind the author of his wife’s kindness.
C.To show his mercy on the author. D.To show his appreciation for the author.
25.Why are those hankies meaningful to the author?
A.They are old-fashioned and Irish-style. B.They are the beginning of good friendship.
C.They tell the author’s unforgettable experience. D.They link the author to a rich couple.
26.What does the underlined word “repercussion” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Effect. B.Result. C.Conflict. D.Challenge.
27.Which of the following can best describe the author?
A.A friend in need is a friend indeed. B.God helps those who help themselves.
C.Great minds think alike. D.Good is rewarded with good.
【答案】24.D 25.C 26.A 27.D
【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。作者在文章中讲述了彼德鲁奇先生赠给她手帕的故事。
24.细节理解题。根据第一段“Mr. Petrucci and his wife, a lovely elderly couple, would often come in. The woman was extremely sweet, often had questions, and liked to chat. Occasionally, I was so busy that taking the extra time with her was challenging, so I greeted her warmly and asked her to walk around the store at her own pace. In truth, I really liked the couple and imagined how fantastic it would be to have them as neighbors.(彼得鲁奇和他的妻子是一对可爱的老夫妇,他们经常进来。
根据第四段“It always serves as a reminder of how important the smallest of gestures can be to someone. Just as I had no idea that I was making a difference to them, he could never imagine how much his gift meant to me.(它总是提醒我们,一个最小的手势对一个人来说是多么重要。就像我不知道我对他们的影响一样,他也无法想象他的礼物对我有多么重要)”可推知,这些手帕让作者回想起难忘的经历,因此对他来说是非常有意义的。故选C项。
26.词句猜测题。根据上文的“It always serves as a reminder of how important the smallest of gestures can be to someone. Just as I had no idea that I was making a difference to them, he could never imagine how much his gift meant to me. We touch each other’s lives in ways we often never know about — for good or for ill(它总是提醒我们,一个最小的手势对一个人来说是多么重要。就像我不知道我对他们的影响一样,他也无法想象他的礼物对我有多么重要。我们以一种我们常常不知道的方式影响着彼此的生活——不管是好是坏)”和下文的“I try to remember that touching moment every day.(我每天都努力回忆那个感人的时刻)”可知,小小善举对彼此都能产生持久的影响,因此,该词意为“(间接的)影响”,与A项同义。故选A项。
27.推理判断题。根据第一段“Mr. Petrucci and his wife, a lovely elderly couple, would often come in. The woman was extremely sweet, often had questions, and liked to chat. Occasionally, I was so busy that taking the extra time with her was challenging, so I greeted her warmly and asked her to walk around the store at her own pace. In truth, I really liked the couple and imagined how fantastic it would be to have them as neighbors.(彼得鲁奇和他的妻子是一对可爱的老夫妇,他们经常进来。这个女人非常可爱,经常有问题,喜欢聊天。有时候,我太忙了,很难抽出额外的时间陪她,所以我热情地跟她打招呼,让她按照自己的节奏在店里走走。事实上,我真的很喜欢这对夫妇,想象着能和他们做邻居该有多好)”以及第二段“Then he handed me a package and said it was a gift for me, a person who deserved it.(然后他递给我一个包裹,说这是给我的礼物,一个值得拥有它的人)”可知,作者平时的善举得到了彼德鲁奇夫妇的认可和感激,因此D项“善有善报”可以概括。故选D项。
C
Many people encourage competition and focus on success. “Giving up” is frowned upon. We are overjoyed at stories of people who persevered and succeeded. Friends and colleagues always encourage you to keep trying. “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” “Follow your dream! Winners never quit!”
Perseverance is indeed important, to a limit. However, never take it too far. For one thing, goals and dreams might be beyond reach. Stories of achieving childhood dreams through perseverance might be uplifting, but they suffer from “selection bias”. Put simply, they are not informative, because nobody tells stories about the many people who persevered but failed after wasting a good part of their lives. It is indeed frustrating if you follow an unrealistic dream. For another, every road taken means another road is not taken. An unrealistic goal means missing out on other opportunities. What if everybody with the childhood dream of becoming an astronaut persistently kept trying forever? Winners always wisely choose what to quit and what to pursue.
Recent studies have shown that being able to give up some goals and dreams and redirect your energy toward more reasonable ones is important for mental well-being and leads to higher quality of life in the long term. The psychological term is “goal disengagement”. If you are currently devoting too much time and effort to an unattainable goal, here are some hints that might help.
First, do not tie a goal to your identity. Nobody can be defined by a single goal or interest. Besides, disengage from a goal but keep some of the effort. It’s called “turning it into a hobby”. Few stamp and coin collectors desire to become professionals, yet many enjoy collecting. Last and most important, do not think of giving up as a failure, but as a choice. Your time is limited. Try new activities, rediscover previous interests, and revise your ambitions. Be honest with yourself about your chances, and choose the goals that best suit you. And remember that, when you give up a goal, you do not fail. You make a choice to free up your time for other possibilities.
28.What result may “selection bias” bring to people?
A.Setting self-limit. B.Giving up more easily.
C.Misjudging the situation. D.Ignoring successful stories.
29.How can people benefit from “goal disengagement”?
A.By motivating their desire for success. B.By gaining a sense of self-satisfaction.
C.By telling easy goals from difficult goals. D.By saving energy to focus on practical goals.
30.Which of the following may the author agree with?
A.Accepting failure with ease does make sense.
B.One can make a hobby out of an unattainable goal.
C.Turn to professionals when realizing personal goals.
D.Choosing a goal is more challenging than realizing it.
31.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.Identity Crisis: Be True to Yourself. B.Goals or Hobbies: Make Your Choice.
C.Never Say Never: The Key to Success. D.Winners Do Quit: Be Wise About Your Goals.
【答案】28.C 29.D 30.B 31.D
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了成功者会通过设定目标来实现难以实现的追求,解释了背后的心理现象以及建议。
28.细节理解题。根据第二段“Stories of achieving childhood dreams through perseverance might be uplifting, but they suffer from “selection bias”. Put simply, they are not informative, because nobody tells stories about the many people who persevered but failed after wasting a good part of their lives.(通过坚持不懈实现童年梦想的故事可能令人振奋,但它们受到“选择偏见”的影响。简而言之,它们不能提供信息,因为没有人讲述许多人在浪费了生命的大部分时间后坚持不懈但失败了的故事)”可知,“选择偏差”会给人们带来判断错误。故选C。
29.细节理解题。根据第三段“Recent studies have shown that being able to give up some goals and dreams and redirect your energy toward more reasonable ones is important for mental well-being and leads to higher quality of life in the long term. The psychological term is “goal disengagement”. If you are currently devoting too much time and effort to an unattainable goal, here are some hints that might help.(最近的研究表明,能够放弃一些目标和梦想,把你的精力转向更合理的目标,对心理健康很重要,从长远来看,这能带来更高的生活质量。心理学术语是“目标脱离”。如果你目前在一个无法实现的目标上投入了太多的时间和精力,这里有一些提示可能会有所帮助)”可知,人们通过节省精力专注于实际的目标从“目标脱离”中获益。故选D。
30.细节理解题。根据最后一段“Besides, disengage from a goal but keep some of the effort. It’s called “turning it into a hobby”.(此外,从目标中解脱出来,但要保持一些努力。这叫做“把它变成一种爱好”。)”可知,一个人可以把不可能实现的目标变成爱好。故选B。
31.主旨大意题。根据最后一段“Many people encourage competition and focus on success. “Giving up” is frowned upon. We are overjoyed at stories of people who persevered and succeeded. Friends and colleagues always encourage you to keep trying. “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” “Follow your dream!
D
In Hungary, every few months, a group of volunteers gather for the Plastic Cup, a competition where teams go up against each other to collect as much rubbish as possible. “The name comes from the American Cup, a famous boat race,” said the Plastic Cup’s project manager, Gergely Hankó, adding, “We have many volunteers, including companies and decision-makers. Everybody is forming the team.”
The most recent Plastic Cup meeting was held on Hungary’s Lake Tisza and the Tisza River, the Danube’s longest tributary (支流). Besides huge amounts of plastic like bottles, volunteers often fish out metal cans, tyres, batteries and so on. Around 150 volunteers joined this cleanup, with one participant noting, “It’s always good fun and we’re making friends and having fun while doing good.”
Nearly half of Earth’s surface waters are in river basins shared by at least two countries. These support around 40% of the world’s population. “Unluckily, there’s much pollution in every river globally. The Danube transfers 1,500 tons of plastic, the Tisza around 250 tons, and we can stop 100 tons per year,” Gergely said when stressing the broader impact of the Plastic Cup project.
This year’s cleanup on the Tisza River also falls on Danube Day, a yearly event held across several European countries to mark the signing of the Danube River Protection Convention. “What we can do is to collect and remove plastic rubbish from the Tisza River and its tributaries, and we also have a monitoring system to keep the pollution under observation,” said Örs Antal from Hungary’s General Directorate of Water Management. “The situation has improved a lot, which is good news, but a step towards a permanent measure would be whether we could strengthen international cooperation.”
Agreeing with the opinion, Gergely said more cooperation would be needed between countries that share surface waters. “We need everybody to clean up the Tisza basin and the Danube basin,” he said. “Every country has to develop its Extended Producer Responsibility system and its Deposit Return system. Then you have to deal with the producers, work on eco-design, reduce the packaging, and reduce the generated rubbish.”
32.How can the participants benefit from the competition?
A.Have a larger social circle. B.Obtain more survival skills.
C.Be better at making decisions. D.Learn a rich knowledge of teamwork.
33.Why are the numbers mentioned in paragraph 3?
A.To draw more attention to the Tisza.
B.To indicate the necessity for the project.
C.To show the popularity of the competition.
D.To stress the shortage of the water resource.
34.What does the Hungarian government probably do in order to protect the Danube river?
A.Organize daily cleanup activities. B.Establish their own Danube Day.
C.Force companies to pick up rubbish. D.Watch the pollution through a device.
35.What is necessary for a lasting solution to river pollution according to Gergely?
A.Increasing the number of volunteers. B.Setting up more environmental events.
C.Strengthening international partnerships. D.Reducing the cost of cleanup operations.

I'm writing to express my concern over your recent decision to switch to full English instruction in English class. While it may benefit fluent English speakers, some students might struggle to comprehend and keep pace with the lessons.
Therefore, I suggest we initially adopt a mixed-language approach and we will gradually turn to full English instruction. It would also be helpful to provide additional resources and support during this transition, ensuring every student can benefit from this new teaching method.

A couple looking for the perfect wedding venue (场地) decided to take a chance on a beautiful home in their neighborhood.
Christina Butkus and her fiance got engaged last summer and always looked for a venue, with the hope of getting married this fall. They wanted to find a beautiful venue but they didn’t want to spend too much on the venue because they were also in the process of trying to move out of state and purchase a home. So the venue search was a challenge for the couple.
“We’re trying to move to Savannah, Georgia, to buy a house there. Obviously, we’d like to put more of our money into our house than a wedding venue, so we’re looking around but nothing is set in stone. If we have to, we’ll push the wedding back, but that’s our goal,” Christina tells PEOPLE.
In discussing their venue options, the couple often joked about a beautiful home in their area, despite not knowing who lives there.
“Every time we go on our morning walk, we pass this mansion that’s close to where we live. We always said how perfect it would be if we could get married there,” Christina shares.
What started off as a joke led to further discussions. “We were like, ‘Let’s knock on their door and ask if we can get married there.’ So one night, after a few glasses of wine, we wrote down a letter. We gave them a little bit of background about ourselves, how we’re hard-working members of the community and really are young adults trying to save money on a wedding.”
That night, Dec. 6, Christina and her fiance went on a walk and put the letter in the home’s mailbox. She also shared video of the adventure on the Internet. The video showed the two driving by the house during the day, then returning at night to drop off the letter.

And slowly hope turned into despair and gradually they forgot that letter. Then, on Dec. 20, they received a call. Seeing it was a strange number, they hung it off, thinking it might come from a cheat. Then the same phone number called again. Christina picked up the receiver. It was the homeowner who just came back home from abroad. He had read their letter and was touched by their story.
To their astonishment, the homeowner agreed to let them use the house for their wedding! Overjoyed, Christina and her fiance immediately began planning. They met with the homeowner to discuss the details, and the kind-hearted person even offered some helpful suggestions. With the perfect venue secured, their dream of a fall wedding in a beautiful place was finally coming true. They were grateful not only for the amazing opportunity but also for the unexpected kindness that turned their wild idea into a reality.

As the sun rose, 68-year-old George Hamilton put on his well-worn running shoes, ready for the annual 10K race. Surrounded by fit teenagers and energetic adults, George 41 out with his silver hair. As the starting gun 44 , George settled into his steady pace, watching the other runners 45 around the first bend. At mile three, he spotted a young boy named Tommy 46 at the side of the road. Approaching him, George offered 47 , “The race isn’t about being the fastest. It’s about not giving up.” Sharing stories of his past 48 , George inspired Tommy, who soon began to jog alongside him. Mile five brought another surprise. People by the roadside, 49 gone by this time, erupted into cheers as they came close, adding a 50 to their steps. Rounding the final corner, George was amazed to see a crowd gathered, their shouts growing louder. Among them were 51 faces — neighbors and even the young runner from the start.
