During my undergraduate years in Kerala, India, a severe flood changed my life. One morning, I was urgently awakened by a friend informing me that heavy rain had caused flooding in our area. Outside, the scene was chaotic: families trapped on rooftops, children crying for help, and hospital patients being evacuated (疏散). My friends and I immediately joined the rescue efforts, distributing food to those affected. This experience had a profound impact on me, leading me to a new career path.
I had initially pursued civil engineering, inspired by my dream of designing buildings. However, as my studies progressed, I became more interested in research. The flood clarified my direction. After volunteering in affected communities that summer, I decided to focus on natural disasters. I applied for a master’s program in development studies, a multidisciplinary (多学科的) course covering sustainable development, geography, and economics, with hands-on community projects. This decision greatly surprised my friends and family, who questioned why I was leaving engineering for social sciences. They worried about my job prospects, but I was determined to follow my passion.
The program exposed me to projects helping communities plan for climate change, strengthening my belief in this path. I then applied for a Ph. D., despite financial uncertainty and the challenge of switching fields. Many universities preferred candidates with consistent academic backgrounds, and I faced rejections and skepticism during interviews. However, one program accepted me, allowing me to study how better water resource management and policy can help vulnerable populations adapt to climate change uncertainties.
Starting the Ph. D.was exciting but challenging. Now, three years into my program, I am confident in my decision. The challenges are worth it, as I can dive into an issue I care deeply about and potentially help people. My journey has taught me that following your heart, even on an unconventional path, is the right choice.
24.What does the writer want to show by mentioning the flood experience?
A.The urgency of rescue efforts.
B.The necessity of distributing food.
C.Its significant effect on his career path.
D.Its disastrous consequences for the residents.
25.How did the writer’s friends and family feel about his career decision?
A.They felt happy and proud. B.They felt angry and confused.
C.They felt doubtful and dismissive. D.They felt shocked and concerned.
26.Which of the following best describes the writer's application process for a Ph. D.?
A.Eventful. B.Unbearable. C.Delightful. D.Effortless.
27.What can we learn from the text?
A.Challenges are unavoidable.
B.We should think before we act.
C.We should pursue our dreams despite conventions.
D.Following others’ advice helps make right decisions.
【答案】24.C 25.D 26.A 27.C
根据第一段最后一句“This experience had a profound impact on me, leading me to a new career path. (这次经历对我产生了深远的影响,引领我走上了一条新的职业道路。)”可知,作者提及洪水经历是为了表明它对自己的职业道路产生了重大影响。故选C项。
25.细节理解题。根据第二段“This decision greatly surprised my friends and family, who questioned why I was leaving engineering for social sciences. They worried about my job prospects, but I was determined to follow my passion. (这一决定让我的朋友和家人大为惊讶,他们质疑我为什么要离开工程学转向社会科学。他们担心我的就业前景,但我决心追随自己的热情。)”可知,作者的朋友和家人对他的职业决定感到惊讶,并且质疑他为什么放弃工程学转向社会科学,还担心他的就业前景,即他们感到震惊和担忧。故选D项。
26.推理判断题。根据第三段中的“I then applied for a Ph. 故选A项。
根据最后一段最后一句“My journey has taught me that following your heart, even on an unconventional path, is the right choice. (我的旅程告诉我,跟随自己的内心,即使走在一条非传统的道路上,也是正确的选择。)”可知,作者的经历让他明白,即使选择一条非传统的道路,也要追随自己的内心,即我们应该不顾常规去追求梦想。故选C项。

If you think history is old hat, try getting a seat at the Royal Albert Hall on October 18th. The big draw is a pair of chatty historians.
Tom Holland and Dominic Sandbrook have each written several books. Fame enough to fill the Royal Albert Hall comes from something else, though. Since its launch in 2020, their podcast (播客), “The Rest is History”, has become the most subscribed to podcast in Britain. The pair originally considered their podcast as an added thing to book-writing. Now they have little time for anything else.
Professionals in the industry may assume that making use of the past for stories is easy, or that listeners just hope to sound clever without reading books. But the speed with which history podcasts have grown suggests other reasons are in play. Some people realize in their 30s that their formal education has left big gaps. Unlike, say, science, history does not require specialized knowledge. The shows also create a sense of community, and use ancient traditions of storytelling, for all these reasons history podcasts are enjoying a golden age.
Relatively speaking, that is. History will never be top of the pops, admits Mike Duncan, an American podcaster. Downloads for sports and entertainment shows, or jokey current-events shows such as “The Joe Rogan Experience”, remain far more popular. But history shows tend to sport a longer tail than competing shows. Not many listeners will want to dig up old news shows’ quick takes. But Mr. Duncan’s podcast on Rome, which ended in 2012, still gets thousands of weekly downloads.
Many podcasters find their own capacity as storytellers keeps improving. All that is good for an audience that increasingly looks for a sense of companionship in podcasts because they spend ever more time in lonely pursuits, such as exercise, than in social forums (论坛). “Our audience weren’t necessarily interested in history,” says Mr. Holland. “But I think lots of them like companionship.” The rest may be history, but history, at least, seems to be getting better.
28.What can we say about “The Rest is History”?
A.It is aimed at improving writing skills. B.It was launched to promote a book.
C.It is sharply criticized by scholars. D.It has fully occupied its creators.
29.What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about history podcasts?
A.Their long-held traditions. B.Their educational significance.
C.Factors contributing to their success. D.Special knowledge required to make them.
30.What do the underlined words “sport a longer tail” mean in paragraph 4?
A.Sustain a lasting effect. B.Dig up more quick takes.
C.Change previous functions. D.Cover more content.
31.What does Mr. Holland think history podcasts can do?
A.Grow into his life-long pursuit. B.Bring listeners a sense of community.
C.Improve listeners’ storytelling styles. D.Encourage more listeners to study history.
【答案】28.D 29.C 30.A 31.B
根据第二段中的“The pair originally considered their podcast as an added thing to book-writing. Now they have little time for anything else.(这两个人最初认为他们的播客是写书的附加内容。现在他们几乎没有时间做其他事情了)”可知,主创人员本来将播客看作他们写作的附属品,但是现在他俩几乎没有时间忙别的事情了,即播客The Rest is History完全占据了主创者(的时间)。故选D。
29.主旨大意题。根据第三段中的“But the speed with which history podcasts have grown suggests other reasons are in play.(但历史播客的增长速度表明,还有其他原因在起作用)”和“for all these reasons history podcasts are enjoying a golden age(由于所有这些原因,历史播客正在享受一个黄金时代)”可知,本段主要探讨了促成历史题材类播客成功的因素。故选C。
根据画线部分sport a longer tail 所在的句子“But history shows tend to sport a longer tail than competing shows. Not many listeners will want to dig up old news shows’ quick takes.(但历史节目往往比竞争节目sport a longer tail。没有多少听众愿意翻出旧新闻节目的速成片段)”及后面所举的两个对比的例子可知,这里的 sport 意为“拥有,展示”,longer tail指的是历史类节目比竞争节目拥有更长的“尾巴”。在市场营销中,“长尾效应”指某些产品或服务能够持续吸引小众需求,保持较长时间的流行。因此,这句话的意思是历史类节目能够持续吸引听众,保持较长时间的受欢迎程度。因此选项 A “Sustain a lasting effect”最符合语境。故选A。
根据第三段中的“The shows also create a sense of community(这些节目还创造了一种社区意识)”和最后一段中的“‘Our audience weren’t necessarily interested in history,’ says Mr. Holland. ‘But I think lots of them like companionship. ’(‘我们的观众不一定对历史感兴趣,’Holland先生说。‘但我认为他们中的许多人喜欢陪伴。’)”可知,Mr. Holland认为历史题材类播客能够带给听众一种社区归属感。故选B。
D
When you’re feeling unhappy, do you reach for something to eat to lift your mood? You’re not alone; emotional eating is all too common. It’s estimated that 75 percent of overeating is triggered by emotions.
If you’re looking for food for comfort, which foods do you choose? Instead of celery (芹菜) or cucumber, sweet treats like ice cream or salty snacks like chips always do the trick. A new study suggests that, however, the foods we eat to feel better may have the opposite effect.
Researchers at Harvard and Women’s Hospital in Boston were interested in the effects on mood of ultra-processed (超加工的) foods such as sweet and spicy snacks as well as processed meats, drinks, and other energy-dense items.
The researchers gave a recognized food frequency questionnaire every four years to 31,000 women aged 42 to 62. The women who reported high ultra-processed food consumption had a greater BMI, higher rates of drinking, and more diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure. The researchers also noted an increased risk of depression associated with ultra-processed food consumption. Over the 14 years of the study, they found 4,840 cases of depression.
A causal link between depression and the consumption of ultra-processed food isn’t known, but researchers hazard a speculation that artificial sweeteners affect the communication between cells in the brain and nervous system, which may be involved with depression. However, it’s still under debate.
What are the practical implications of using ultra-processed foods to lift your mood? You could switch to healthier snacks (e. g., nuts, carrots). The sounds of chewing the snack might replace the sweet taste of the ultra-processed food. Or, instead of eating, you could find an enjoyable activity to improve your frame of mind. For instance, you could listen to upbeat music or watch a comedy video. But the best alternative is to get active. Walking, jogging, yoga, or strength training is an effective treatment for depression. It’s easier to reach for an ultra-processed snack when you’re feeling down, but that might leave you feeling worse. Instead, get up and do something physical; you’ll feel much better!
32.What type of food do people usually eat for comfort?
A.Celery and cucumber. B.Ice cream and chips. C.Nuts and carrots. D.Whole grains.
33.What do the underlined words “hazard a speculation” mean in Paragraph 5?
A.Rule out a possibility.B.Confirm an opinion.C.Make an assumption.D.Object to an idea.
34.How many alternatives to emotional eating are suggested in the passage?
A.Two. B.Three. C.Four. D.Five.
35.What is the passage mainly about?
A.The link between food and mood. B.The harm of ultra-processed food.
C.The importance of physical exercise. D.The advice on improving your mood.

根据文章第二段“If you’re looking for food for comfort, which foods do you choose? Instead of celery (芹菜) or cucumber, sweet treats like ice cream or salty snacks like chips always do the trick.(如果你在寻找能带来安慰的食物,你会选择哪些呢?你不会选芹菜或黄瓜,而是像冰淇淋这样的甜食,或者像薯片这样的咸味零食,这些往往很管用。)”可知,当人们为了寻求安慰而选择食物时,通常不会选择芹菜或黄瓜,而是会选择像冰淇淋这样的甜食或像薯片这样的咸味零食。故选B。
33.词句猜测题。根据划线单词所在上下文“A causal link between depression and the consumption of ultra-processed food isn’t known, but researchers hazard a speculation that artificial sweeteners affect the communication between cells in the brain and nervous system, which may be involved with depression.
根据文章最后一段“What are the practical implications of using ultra-processed foods to lift your mood? You could switch to healthier snacks (e. g., nuts, carrots). The sounds of chewing the snack might replace the sweet taste of the ultra-processed food. Or, instead of eating, you could find an enjoyable activity to improve your frame of mind. For instance, you could listen to upbeat music or watch a comedy video. But the best alternative is to get active. Walking, jogging, yoga, or strength training is an effective treatment for depression.(用超加工食品来改善心情会有哪些实际影响呢?
A“The link between food and mood.(食物与情绪之间的联系)”准确地概括了文章的核心内容,文章从情绪化进食、超加工食品对情绪的影响以及改善情绪的食物选择等方面阐述了食物和情绪的关系。故选A。

A Few Tips for Starting an Art Habit
Art is good for your mind and body. It can reduce stress and anxiety and improve your mood. 36 Here are some things you need to know.
•Figure out your mode of creative expression. You can start with what you enjoy, but keep an open mind. Anything that engages your creative mind is good for you: finger painting, cooking, baking, oil painting, weaving, writing screenplays—the sky’s the limit. 37 Mix them up—do whatever you’re in the mood for.
•Focus on the making, and let go of expectations. Once you have your art materials, here comes the fun part. Mess around! It’s the physical act of making art that causes those feelings of stress relief—not what you make or how you make it. You don’t even need to like what you’re making. 38 When you don’t like what you are making, it frees you up to explore new ideas.
•Carve out time and space for art. Try to find a special time in your week to devote to your practice. You don’t need a few hours. 39 In addition, try to set aside a corner table for your art supplies. If space is an issue, put them all in a basket or a plastic container that’s easily accessible.
• 40 Some days, you won’t feel like making art. That’s OK. Try to understand what’s going on. What’s stopping you from making art? Are you anxious? If you’re too anxious to make art, address the anxiety. Stand up from the couch and go to take a walk or a run.
A.Get yourself in the mood.
B.Get familiar with the basis of art.
C.In fact, that can be a positive thing.
D.When is the best age to start an art habit?
E.But how can you start your creative art habit?
F.And don’t feel like you have to stick to one thing.
G.Going just 10 minutes of art each day can do wonders.

Stand up from the couch and go to take a walk or a run.”(有时候,你会不想做艺术。 故选A。

Eaten away by time and covered in dust, Chinese ancient books describe the history of Chinese civilization. Now China has promised to make full use 56 them, rather than leaving them sleeping in archives (档案). On Friday, under an initiative 57 (lead) by the National Library of China in Beijing, key 58 (library) around the country released digital versions of 7,085 ancient books online for free public use.
This was the 9th 59 (expand) of the national online network known as the Chinese Ancient Book Resources Database. The number of digitized copies on the platform stands at 105,000, with the National Library 60 (contribute) 1,024 books, including 274 listed as rare editions. A print edition of the Shiji (Records of the Grand Historian), which 61 (publish) in 1171, is one such example. Written in the 1st century BC by Sima Qian, it’s a foundation text of Chinese history.
56. of 57.led 58.libraries 59.expansion 60.contributing 61.was published 62.which 63.to survive 64.definitely 65.What
故填of。
A print edition of the Shiji,与publish之间是被动关系。 故填was published。
A precious Northern Song period (960—1127) edition of the Houhanshu,指物,在从句中作主语,所以用关系代词which引导。故填which。
分析句子可知,这里考查be lucky enough to do sth. 故填to survive。
故填What。

The school’s short video competition, “The Hero in My Heart”, was coming to an end, and David was feeling the pressure. His father, an ordinary factory worker, and his mother, an average cleaner in their neighborhood, didn’t seem like the kind of heroes you see in stories. As the final day got closer, David thought hard, but he couldn’t think of any ideas.
All of David’s classmates were excited, talking about the parts of their videos, but David didn’t say anything. One night, in the school library, his friend Mike came over to him. “Hey, David, how’s your video going?” Mike asked. David said, “I’m not doing well. I can’t think of anyone to make a video about.” Mike told David, “You’ll come up with something. You always do.” He gave David a supportive tap on the shoulder, making David want even more to find his hero.
One night, when David was sitting at the kitchen table, his mom came back from work. Her hands were worn and her clothes were dirty from working all day. Even though she was tired, she smiled at David and asked him about his day. David felt bad; he had been so worried about his own problems that he hadn’t really noticed how hard his mom worked.
That night, while they were enjoying their dinner, David’s mom told stories about her day. She spoke about assisting an elderly couple who had lost their way and guiding them back home, as well as comforting a kid who was upset after dropping his ice cream. As she told these stories, David started to see things differently. His mom’s job wasn’t just about cleaning; she was also helping people and being kind.
This gave David an idea. He decided to make a video about his mom’s everyday heroism. The next day, he followed her with a camera, filming her as she cleaned the halls, helped neighbors, and took care of the shared spaces. Seeing how the people in their community respected and thanked his mom, he realized that she was a hero in her own way.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
David worked late into the night, working on the video.

David worked late into the night, working on the video. He carefully picked the parts that showed his mother’s gentle smile, her tireless work, and the small acts of kindness she performed without seeking praise. David’s eyes welled up with tears as he watched the video, realizing how much he had failed to notice his mother’s heroism. He titled the video “The Unsung Hero” and turned it in just before midnight, feeling a mix of exhaustion and pride. The following days were filled with eager waiting. David kept his project secret, not even sharing it with his mother.
When the day of the competition results arrived, he sat in the audience, his heart racing. He watched as other students received their awards, his anxiety growing. Then, the teacher announced, “And the winner of the special judges’ choice award, for focusing on everyday heroism, is ... David for ‘The Unsung Hero’. ” The room burst into cheers as David stood up. His eyes filled with tears. As he walked to the stage, he knew he had found his hero, not in the glory of celebrated individuals, but in the everyday sacrifices of his mother.

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
David worked late into the night, working on the video.

C
