To his 600,000-plus followers on Instagram and 700,000 on TikTok, Threets is an ordinary man with extraordinary powers. Anything about him is quite welcome, from his first-rate reading recommendations to his passion for advocating libraries. Indeed, he has a long list of his favourite books.
So how did Threets go from being a home-schooled kid to helping a generation of children rediscover the pleasures of the library? “I’ve been in love with libraries since I was three,” he says. If you’re mentally ill, if you’ re unhoused, if you’ re a teen, if you’re a grown-up, you have a spot in the library.
Threets says he didn’t grow up with books written by or about people like him. “Kids want to feel seen in books,” he says. “They want to see their friends and their family.” A love of books has been reignited (再次点燃) in lots of grown-ups via his posts. Tariffs: Protection or Hindrance (妨碍)?
In the complex world of international trade, tariffs play a significant role. A tariff, simply put, is a tax imposed by a government on goods imported into a country. But are tariffs really beneficial? Let’s explore.
For many countries, tariffs have been a tool for protecting domestic industries. For instance, a country might impose high tariffs on imported steel. By doing so, the price of imported steel in the local market increases. This makes domestic steel more competitive, as it becomes relatively cheaper compared to the now-pricier imported steel. This can help local steel producers sell more, keep their workers employed, and even invest in expanding their operations.
However, tariffs also have their downsides. When a country imposes tariffs on imports, it can lead to retaliation (报复) from other countries. Consider a situation where Country A puts high tariffs on the cars imported from Country B.In response, Country B may impose its own tariffs on the agricultural products imported from Country A.As a result, farmers in Country A may find it difficult to sell their products in Country B, leading to financial losses for them.
Moreover, tariffs can increase the cost of living for consumers. When imported goods become more expensive due to tariffs, consumers may have to pay more for everyday items. For example, if a country puts tariffs on imported clothing, the price of clothes in local stores will likely go up, squeezing consumers’ wallets.
Another drawback is that tariffs can disrupt the global supply chain. Many products today are made with components from different countries. When tariffs are imposed, it becomes more expensive to move these components across borders. This can slow down production and increase costs for businesses.
In conclusion, while tariffs can offer some protection to domestic industries in the short-term, they also bring about a host of negative consequences. As the world becomes more interconnected through trade, finding a balance between protecting domestic interests and maintaining a healthy global trading environment is crucial.
28.What is the main definition of a tariff?
A.A tax on exported goods B.A tax on imported goods
C.A subsidy for domestic industries D.A fee for using international shipping routes
29.Why do some countries impose tariffs on imported steel?
A.To increase the price of domestic steel B.To make imported steel more competitive
C.To protect domestic steel producers D.To encourage more imports of steel
30.What is one of the negative effects of tariffs on consumers?
A.They can reduce the quality of products.
B.They can lead to a decrease in product variety.
C.They can cause job losses in domestic industries.
D.They can increase the cost of living.
31.What does the author think about the long-term impact of tariffs?
A.They are always beneficial for domestic industries.
B.They have both positive and negative aspects, and a balance is needed.
C.They are mainly harmful and should be abolished.
D.They are the best way to protect a country’s economic interests.
【答案】28.B 29.C 30.D 31.B
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了关税在国际贸易中的作用及其利弊。
28.细节理解题。根据第一段中“A tariff, simply put, is a tax imposed by a government on goods imported into a country. (简而言之,关税是政府对进口商品征收的一种税。)”可知,关税是对进口商品征收的税。故选B。
29.细节理解题。根据第二段“For many countries, tariffs have been a tool for protecting domestic industries.
根据第四段中“Moreover, tariffs can increase the cost of living for consumers. (此外,关税会增加消费者的生活成本。)”可知,关税对消费者的负面影响之一是会增加生活成本。故选D。
31.推理判断题。根据最后一段“In conclusion, while tariffs can offer some protection to domestic industries in the short-term, they also bring about a host of negative consequences. As the world becomes more interconnected through trade, finding a balance between protecting domestic interests and maintaining a healthy global trading environment is crucial. (总之,虽然关税在短期内可以为本国产业提供一定的保护,但它也会带来一系列负面后果。随着世界通过贸易变得越来越紧密相连,在保护本国利益和维护健康的全球贸易环境之间找到平衡至关重要。)”可知,作者认为关税既有积极的一面,也有消极的一面,需要找到平衡。故选B。

At a crop breeding (培育) center in Shanghai, researchers have successfully harvested rice that was grown from seeds initially bred on China’s space station, Tiangong. The rice plants have completed a full growth cycle on Earth, maturing after more than 100 days since planting.
This space-to-ground experiment began with 6 rice seeds sent into orbit in 2022 on the Wentian spacecraft. Taikonauts onboard Tiangong bred these seeds into 59, which they returned to Earth. Researchers then selected high-quality seeds, growing them under controlled climate conditions and producing around 10,000 new seeds.
Zheng Huiqiong, a lead researcher at the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Center, shared that the team’s findings suggest space-bred seeds can reproduce effectively on Earth, suggesting potential for future space agriculture. Zheng highlighted that the space-bred rice possesses unique traits, such as a higher sugar content, with sugar levels estimated to be five to six times higher than standard rice. The space-bred rice also showed a slight increase in protein content. “That means space-bred rice tastes sweeter and has more energy,” she added.
Space breeding, the method used in this experiment, exposes seeds to space radiation and microgravity, generating gene mutations (基因突变). These mutations are carefully assessed upon the seeds’ return to Earth, sometimes resulting in advantageous traits like shorter growth times, improved disease resistance, and higher output. Zhao Hui, an expert in China Academy of Space Technology, emphasized the safety of space-bred food, explaining that unlike genetically modified crops, space-bred seeds naturally mutate without introducing foreign genes. However, the space-bred rice has fewer leaves, which complicates close planting. Researchers are planning further studies to understand these leaf traits and explore possible genetic changes.
The Tiangong rice experiment marked a milestone for crop science, as it was the first time that rice had completed a full life cycle — from seed germination (发芽) to reproduction — in orbit.
32.What can we know about the space-to-ground experiment?
A.Seeds grown in orbit promise higher crop quality.
B.Seeds bred in space were further grown successfully on Earth.
C.New species of seeds grown in space have achieved great success.
D.Climate conditions were controlled when seeds were sent into orbit.
33.What does the underlined words “traits” mean in paragraph 3?
A.Materials. B.Arrangements. C.Disadvantages. D.Characteristics.
34.What does Zhao Hui stress about the space-bred rice?
A.Its security. B.Its artificial process.
C.Its nutrition. D.Its major shortcoming.
35.Which of the following is the best title?
A.Organic Farming: High-quality Planting in Space
B.Space Exploration: A Journey to the Space and Beyond
C.New Planting Approach: Replacing the Traditional Farming
D.Space-to-ground Cycle: Promising Future Space Agriculture

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My father and I were taking a well-deserved vacation to Disneyland. I had never been there before and was eagerly anticipating the magical experience it promised.
There was another reason why this trip was special. My father was a person who worked long hours. I longed to spend time with him. I wanted to sit down with my father, whom I loved more than life, and just talk. It always seemed like there was never time.
The day finally arrived when I was allowed to pack. I chose only my favourite clothes and my Disney autograph (签名) book. I set my suitcase down on my bed and smiled. I was ready.
I did not get any sleep that night. I lay in my bed and stared out the window. I knew that my father’s work was going to be left at home, finally.
After an early breakfast, we hit the open road. For the first two hours, it was all smooth sailing, until I unexpectedly felt a sharp jerk (震动). We pulled over to the side of the road, and my father said something about the engine being shot. He decided that the easiest thing to do would be to flag someone down and get a ride to town.
An hour later, my father was still waving his hands at each and every passing car but it was not doing any good. Not a single soul would stop to assist my helpless family. Finally, my father gave up and wanted to walk into town. I was certain it was a very long distance. He just said that he would not let anything ruin this trip for me. I begged him to stay and try again. After thinking it over, he decided to stay by our car and keep waving for help.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
After what felt like forever, a truck finally pulled over. The driver, a middle-aged man with a warm smile, offered to help us fix the car. This man did not even know us, and he did not expect anything in return. What I felt at that moment was indescribable. As we waited, for the first time in years, my father didn’t check his phone. Instead, he asked me about school, my friends, and even my little autograph book. By noon, the car had been fixed, and we continued our journey, finally arriving at Disneyland, where we spent the rest of the day filled with laughter and unforgettable memories.
On our way home, while stopping for gas, I saw a familiar figure. It was the man who had rescued us this morning. My father, usually reserved, walked over and shook his hand firmly. “Thank you for saving our trip,” he said. The man simply nodded, “Glad to help.” As we drove off, I glanced at my father. His eyes were softer, and his shoulders were relaxed. The vacation hadn’t gone as planned, but it gave me something even better. None of this would have been possible without that man’s act of kindness.

D

At a time when public libraries are threatened by funding cuts, librarian Mychal Threets sings their praises with infectious enthusiasm. By day, the 33-year-old is a supervising librarian at the Fairfield Civic Center Library. But under the gaze of the smartphone lens (镜头), Threets becomes a superhero.
After all, as he reads, “Having fun isn’t hard when you have a library card.”

D
